You have to remember too, that when FC force you to sign up, you are now one of the "1,000,000 accounts created11!!1" slogan they will release before the quarterly report coming up. Which will be repeated ad nosium by the fanboys as "1,000,000 SUBSCRIPTIONS!"
I think some are a bit confused with their "free" month. Yes when you buy the game and you want your month you'll have to fill in your details and have a CC or any other payment plan. But most popular mmo's have a free trial without a CC NEEDED, they may ask your details but that's it. There are however or were trials like this before (Battleground Europe for instance).
Think it's Funcom's right to choose how they want to set up their trials, but limiting people... well it talks for it's own, you limit possible subscribers.
Wonder if the Op will change the title when he realises.
He doesnt need to, his assumption as far as the billing goes is wrong, many mmos do this, but the thread title is completely acurate, dont see why he should change it.
Final fantasy 11 required my credit card info but gave one month free. I think its a common theme for the newer mmorpgs out there (excluding AoC) not to require credit card info to trial the game because it scares away too many potential customers away. I know before i started playing Everquest 2, i wouldn't dare pay a subscription to a game. 15 dollars a month AND i need to buy a copy of it in the stores for 50?!?omgz That was before i really knew what mmorpgs were. Now, if the game is free to play and claims to be an mmorpg, i will most likely not bother with it. -Guildwars was the exception
I just attempted to try the trial, and it turns out you need to select a subscription for when the trial is over, such as a one month recurring subscription, you don't have the option to pay if you do like the game or not. Does Funcom expect everyone to like the game? Ha! That's a good one Funcom. I thought the trial was going to be like any other trial for any other game, such as WoW (10 days, if you like it you can subscribe), or Tabula Rasa (3 days, same option). But apparently Funcom has added a new definition to trial. Funcom Dictionary. Trial - Another lie, you have to join the game after the trial is finished. If you don't want to, then you don't get to play. Haha. I'm getting sick and tired of Funcom... They need to get it together. /discuss (Sorry if it's been posted already)
Honestly are you really surprised? I won't be surprise if they actually charge you $75 for the first month after the trial is over. Thats the retail box price + one month sub, since you used up the first month free (or 10 days, is Funcom so you never know lol)

Yes.
In fact, at least as far as EVE goes, you don't *ever* have to give them billing info. You start a trial account with an email address and you can play the game forever with gametime codes purchased from third parties (or from other players for in-game money, done through the EVE website).
I'd never give someone credit card info to start a trial (nor would I ever pay a single penny to download a trial), especially if it involved a "negative-option" style like it appears Funcom is using. You should not be subscribed by default and then have to cancel. The MMO market is too competitive to get away with cheap billing tactics anymore, just as it is too competitive to get away with releasing a badly unfinished/broken game.
DAoC was the only MMO I can remember that required ANY charging/billing info before I was able to play. And account cancellation was so simple if you don't want to play after the trial that it wasn't a hassle. Just make sure you do it before the 14 days are up. Hopefully with WAR's eventual trial they'll follow more recent MMOs and won't require billing information. This doesn't say anything about Mythic though, they just have their trial set up the old way. Don't forget how old DAoC is.
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Hmm was going to give it another shot as soon as it loked playable usign free trial but seeing that they try to trick players so they end up paying even though they are not wanting to play after the trial; I will probably never try this game again. Not a big deal imo.

Hmm, If you are unable to comprehend the easy method to workaround the problem and avoid being charged when you don't want to be, then AOC might not be the game for you.
Same goes for the OP. There's lots to complain about with regards to AOC (I should know, I'm still paying/playing) but this petty crap isn't one of them.

Vanguard, requires you to enter your CC for your trail. Ive cancel and re-sub again later and just need to enter the last 3 digit of yur CC number to activate.....
The OP is saying that Funcom gives their game client away for 15€ if you start the trial. Which I find very amazing! No, I don't want to call anyone stupid or so...but. Retailer - 30€ with 30 days. Buddy key - 15€ with 40 days. Hmm.

You need to pay for trial???
Obviously some are...
Think here for once.
If the OP are correct when he says, or inclining, that Funcom will take a month subscription with the trial. That would mean that they first give you 10 days to test the game, and after that they take the subscription fee for one month. That would mean they sell you the game for 15€ if you take a trial while it still cost c:a 30€ in stores.
Many companies take your CC information to validate who you are and get some information. This is to prevent abuse more then anything. They use it to verify your name and address info since you can automate a transaction to validate that with the credit card services. They can also use it to ban you or ban the person that owns the card. Course some people steal cards and register with them but then that is criminal and you can track it by IP and law enforcement over the years is getting better at tracking that stuff too.

Does that sound likely to happen?
I mean what do you believe?
Except when your trial ends you will be required to purchase the game at full price to get your retail key before you can continue playing. My main concern would be if they start billing you immediately after the trial ends whether you've gotten the retail key or not. However, like several have stated already, it's pretty simple to cancel the subscription before the trial ends.
Too bad there are people like me though, who are either lazy or protective of their CC info and will not want to deal with the extra hassle or needlessly hand out their CC info.

Yeah, your concern about being careful about the CC. There is nothing wrong with that.
But even if I exegerated the point. If they would continue charging for the subscription after the trial it would mean they actually give the game away you just need to subscribe to it. Which seems like a pretty nice deal in the end. And concidering (as what I believe) they offer the retail for download for full price it would mean they loose money on doing that.
So with that in mind would one believe that one enters the CC with the intent of continuing to subscribe after the trial.
If it is anything like other trials I've used, they will not be giving the game away. One of the requirements to be able to log into the game is enterring in your retail key which comes with the box, or is emailed to you if you purchase it digitally. You will not receive this key from a buddy pass, and the buddy pass will expire after the trial length is completed. Even if they do begin charging you immediately for the game, they will not be "giving" it away, that retail key is a MUST to continue playing.
Any costs incurred to trial the game would be in addition to the cost of purchasing a retail copy.

Just remember how poorly EVE was at launch, and look how well it's doing now.
Just remember how poorly Everquest 2 was at launch, it's really done a 180 degree turn.
Just because most of the MMORPGs (Yes, even World of Warcraft had its share of issues) don't have a flawless, smooth as glass launch, doesn't mean the company or game will fail.
Have I played AoC? No... why? I have played my fair share of betas that I had to pay for... I am giving this game what it needs... time. If they can't correct their mistakes and get themselves out of the hole they've dug, I won't look back.
Funcom knows there will be a percentage of people who will forget to cancel. They will reap profits from these people. That's their plan.
Aye this is nothing new. SOE has done it with all their games. I cancel immediately - worse thing that can happen is one day you cant log in and have to spend 5 seconds resubbing.

Apparently they think you will be hooked enough and forget your trial time is over and that you're paying them money from now.
