I played DAOC for many years. There is no doubt that Shrouded Isles and Darkness Falls was the best time in the game. They had a balance that was more melee oriented and as a healing class that was much more fun. I played up through the expansion past New Frontiers and even went over to the servers that they made to be more like Old Frontiers. I loved 8 v 8 but even now they have to mess with the game. They are I think testing WAR concepts with Origins to see how they will work out with a larger audience. I know many players are coming back for Origins but I just can't. I have wonderful memories of daoc but have a feeling a trip down a messed up memory lane will ruin them. I am currently playing AOC praying Funcom can clean the game up so it can realize its potential. I also bought the collector addition of war so I will be in the open beta and the release. I will then decide which one I want to play. I hope that everyone who comes back for origins has a great time but be leery of expecting to much because we remember the good things not the bad.
Well to respond to what I quoted as well as the post in general...
I was still playing / having fun on Nimue right up till it was clustered. Then that server went to crap for *me*.
So I quit.. and when Gareth opened I went there. Had a fun time etc right up until the clustered Gareth.
With the realm hoppers, blatant use of speed hacks/radar (very obvious in battle grounds) and almost no Eula/RoC enforcement is pretty much what killed DAoC for me.
I mean they did some big ban waves.. timed perfectly to hit between the release of EQ2/WoW (forget no enforcement for the previous 4 years).
It was things like that which killed DAoC.
Origins server sounded like a good idea (we'll do it like we'd make the game if we could go back in time). Then I read the FAQ and realize they still don't get *it*. With what they want to do with Origins *I* wouldn't have been in DAoC past my 30 days that was *free* with purchase.
I'm already in WAR beta and have been for a long time.
Its not even the fact its under NDA to say more.. its the fact I think *you* should make up your own mind.
I already canceled AoC (didn't go past my *free* time) and have no plans to buy WAR.
/end ramble
Oh and last thing I'll say...
Ever notice how every game that offers a classic server.. has the highest population on their classic server.
But their lead developer will continue to tell us that we have "rose colored glasses" and its not that we dont' really like their current bright idea.
How can people so cluseless be paid to lose subscribers... I mean honestly (and that goes for every MMO out there).
Im fine with that totally. BG s to me take away from the end game RVR IMO. Toomany people playing those instead of the real game
Problem with that is.. those people are paying a subscription to play the part of the game they are willing to pay for.
Keeping the current pos archery system... no theurg for albs.. valks for mids... low levels in the frontier to exploit the anti griefing code (if you played daoc much you know someone will find a way).
Just a string of bad decisions.
The goal should have been to get old customers back that left due to most of this idiot decisions. Instead they will just move around their current population and get some (not as many as they could have) people back.
If enough people leave the other servers and the "battle ground players" don't have the action they were willing to pay for.. then those just lost those subs.
Just saying from a business stand point.. I think Origins was a great idea.. right up until they released the FAQ.
I guess we'll see.. and my personal opinion is that WAR won't appeal to the "hard core" daoc fan. Of course I'm just saying this from my person viewpoint and I have been in WAR beta for quite a while. It certainly doesn't appeal to me in any way...
So with the current crapfest of MMO's.. I would have actually resubbed to Origins long term.. if it had indeed been Origins.. and not all the crap that drove me away pasted in the Old Frontier.. no battle grounds just adds to that same stupid decision chain. I never lived in BG's but I played them when my group or friends weren't on etc blah blah
Perhaps that's just it.. the server isn't going to be what *I* thought it would be when I saw the name.. so I am just disgruntled.
I m not sure i agree with this at all. I was there when DAOC launched. Some of this stuff you say they added onto OF is a string of bad decisions, to me are good additions. I loved DAOC at first and honestly haven t found anything i like as much (WAR beta is the exception). On that note WAR will appeal to the hardcore DAOC fan more then i think you realize
Anyways on topic. No BGs really won t effect me either way. If they re there i ll play them from time to time. If they re not i ll get my crafting up faster:) I understand BG s are important to alot of people but it really does distract from the purpose of the game in general. The main focus is end game RVR.
Actually, I'll have to agree with Antarious. I think many vets and fans of DAoC who are waiting on another amazing PvP MMO will have to wait even longer for one. Or in other words, WAR isn't that great to be honest.
DAoC was and still is a pretty fun game. However, you must admit it is a bit outdated given all the good content now available in MMORPGs. I think WAR will be the perfect opportunity for those who loved DAoC to come play the updated version of DAoC.

The hilarious thing is, is that it's not outdated at all. I could even go further to say that DAoC is ahead of most MMO's being released today (which is extremely sad). List things that are outdated in DAoC.
You can say it's outdated, but if I have more fun on DAoC than say, AoC, WoW, Vang., EQ2, or others, then it doesn't look very outdated.
Well, some will say that the graphics, controls, and UI are outdated. The thing is though, no one has been able to reproduce the RvR. You'd think that it would be easy enough to just copy DAOCs RvR system, add some features, and add the ability to bust into the enemies realm, but I don't know...
I've tried to get interested in WAR (at least a few times) but it just looks to restricted, linear, and instanced to me. Seems much more inline with new MMOs. Of course, Im not in beta and I could be wrong.

I'll go ahead and warn you that your predictions of WAR's gameplay are correct. And I also have been baffled by the fact that nobody has replicated DAoC's RvR. Honestly, the graphics controls and UI aren't very outdated at all. Plus, even if they were a little bit, that doesn't affect the gameplay much at all.
The game isn't outdated at all. And if you wanted to say it was, then it would only be a little bit. Ironically, the PvP is still WAY ahead of every MMO coming out. Sad...
I think DAoC will survive. The one thing I find the biggest difference from WAR is that WAR is 2 sides, where as DAoC is 3 sides to fight in RvR. I know there are 3 different fronts in WAR, but you really only have 1 enemy to fight against, not a second enemy that can attack either side like with DAoC.
When I first heard that about WAR, I was really disappointed because a lot of the fun comes from that chaos of 3 different sides. 1 side vs anotther side has been done a lot, just not really with the RvR centered basis, but RvRvR, now that is fun!
I'll still try WAR, and hopefully have fun for a while, but it is possible I may end up in another game or playing some DAoC again.
After some thought I think I'll be back to play some Origins this year. I miss the old game, and I don't think WAR will really be a replacement for the gameplay style it brought.
Will be fun to play again on a crowded server again..even if its only for a short time.

I don't feel like it's outdated, just pointing out that much of the "WOW generation" would probably complain about the UI and controls. Personally, I don't care about graphics. I'll always be willing to sacrifice graphics in favor of game play and features.
And yea, I do think that DAOC still has the best PvP system. I wish there was a new PvP MMO with either:
A) a cloned version of the DAOC RvR system with more depth and features.
a faction vs faction PvP system, along the lines of what Darkfall was trying to do (maybe with out the FFA part though).
I'm an old timer, played since launch. Had multiple characters, and at one time had multiple accounts. Loved the game, left the game after Isles. Bounced around from game to game, and for the past 6 months have been playing ddo. A week or so ago, I decided to come back. Was very surprised to see that two of my characters survived. Heck I even remember and started humming the cheesy music (what a feeling) I felt like a fish out of water, but couldn't believe that in all those years almost nothing had changed.
This game was, and still is, the best PvP game out there. But it is outdated, the graphics do need an overall as well as the interface. Sorry to say, but the eye candy does appeal to gamers. Heck, ddo has better graphics, but I can't bear to do the level grind anymore. I don't have the time.
It's sad that what killed this game in my opinion was Mythic not listening to their players and still not being proactive. As an example, you come up with the great idea of creating this origin server which I think is awesome. You would bring back so many people, yet no one knows when the launch is. And to make matters worse, the launch could be after the summer. Hello, summer...kids off from school, people have 4 day weeks, what a great time to launch. Not after the summer, when you go back to work and school, etc.
I am on the verge of just giving up on MMO's in general with so many disappointments. War will probably be my last one ever. I just hope when this new server gets launched, things go smoothly and I am not disappointed again, but somehow I think I will. So until then I will live by the axiom, man who expects nothing is never disappointed.
Sorry I am coming into this thread so late... unlike DAoC Anyway, I think the Origins server (which I bashed to death when the FAQ came out) will not only save DAoC, it will bring some new players as well. Anyone who played before clustering (which hurt the game as much as ToA IMO) can remember the "realm hate" and desire to kill those other realms. It was more than just pride at times, it was a good old fashion fight just because you really didn't like the other realms. That is one thing you will NEVER come close to with any other game. Sure, there are moments in all PvP games where you get that
"rush", but honestly, don't you old time DAoC vets agree that the whole RvR set-up made you want to fight for your realm? I 100% agree with the posters who stated that they hate the new archery system and the "changes" that they are adding with the Origins server, it is a misleading name for sure... however, I've had a change of heart and will be giving it a shot and will be bringing 6 people with me. Am I interested in the server and the cool additions/system? Hell no. I just know that having a populated server and playing with people who are *fighting* the other realms is going to be a blast!!!
Also, I don't know if anyone has noticed, but the subscription system has changed. It used to be handled on the log-in "pop-up", it's now web based with links to all the EA/Mythic games right on the same page. I'm not saying it is proof or anything... but it sure appears that they are getting ready for a multi-game subscription system. So WAR might help DAoC like so many people have stated.
To stay slightly on topic, I'd have to say that ToA, in its original implementation, was what "killed" DAOC. However, there were a lot of factors that contributed: buff bots, clustering, expansion classes, etc. All that said, I feel that what is currently killing DAOC is, specifically, cross-realming. Honorable mention for me is the opposing realm duelers and RP farming.
Over to the outdated comments. The reality is that daoc is outdated, however it has matched the competition well considering its age. Graphically, the game is behind the power curve but fortunately not so much that it is completely unappealing. The UI used to be very outdated, heck it felt outdated when it came out, but now, you get BoB's UI or something, and you can have an excellent UI, with just as much functionality as a modern UI. Note that I feel WoW's UI is pretty clumsy unless modded also, heck just about every game's UI I mod, so take that as you may. The only UI I never modded extensively was EQ2's, but that's me. The controls themselves are customizable enough to make the game play the same as any other mmo out there, so I can't see how you could list that as outdated.
Oh, and about the new archery system. Yeah, I don't personally like it, but the reality is that archers needed it. They needed to be archers, and it seems that the current way is the only way to have it work out at least somewhat "right." I did prefer the old style better, with actually using arrows and quivers, but hey, we never got a group back then either...
I think this game will get a healthy population boost with the release of the origins server. I know 2 guilds are coming from Age of Conan to this game for that purpose.
It's funny, with every failed MMO, new life is breathed back into the ones that have proven they're worth a damn.
Well said . DAoC for me will always be about PvP, a great, authentic medieval world, cool spell effects, a variety of classics, outdated graphics (but still great spell effects!) and a simple but entertaining game. I didn't play it for too long, but now seeing some of the other games I left it to try, I wish I'd stayed longer. (I came in after ToA, so I don't know first-hand the havoc it wreaked, but it apparently was severe!)
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
I'm not sure I really understand why the graphics are "outdated"? Is it the style, detail level, backgrounds, avatars, animations, brightness/colorful...?? I guess I just don't see the lack of eye-candy perhaps. I know it is a matter of personal taste, but I think the DAoC graphics are so much better than WAR (from what I have seen and I understand it's not a released game yet), WoW, or any of the "beautiful" korean MMOs. It is more gritty and "real" and fits the gameplay so well. The armor details are amazing IMO. I guess my only graphic knock would be the icons (loot icons as well as style/spell). I'm not picking a fight or anything, I would like to know what I'm overlooking.

I'm gonna have to agree with you here. Went back to DAoC after not playing for a few years and it doesn't look "bad". Granted it's not the prettiest thing on the market, but it's still not as offensive to the eye as most people say it is. Plus, there's the fact that giving a game with a primary feature of RvR really high-end graphics would slow the game down a bit.
Anyways, back to the whole "Death of DAoC" thing. As I said, I just returned to DAoC after a long period away from the game and I'm actually enjoying it more than most other MMOs on the market. Granted, the I'm not expecting the game to be resurrected, especially when WAR launches, but it's still enjoyable for a game that's lingering on.
If you ask me, the character models and terrain are not what are available in other games. Yes, DAoC has decent graphics, but even turned to max they are pleasing but not spectacular. Games like Vanguard and AoC are just a step ahead of DAOC in all graphic areas IMO. I'm not saying VG and AoC are the only 2 examples or even perfect examples, but I was stunned at some of the graphics I could get on my system on those games. DAoC is merely pleasing to the eyes to me. Spell and action graphics of DAoC are on line with most other games IMO if not better than most. I've always thought they had the best graphics for much of their spell graphics of any game though.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven.
