Why should I come back to SWG if it's being Replaced in the near future? Why should I make the investment of time, money, and energy only to see the game get shutdown? What's the point?
Comments
Why would you want to come back anyways?
I'm surprised they haven't shut down what servers are left and called it quits.
I think once KOTOR 3 comes out they probably will.
Define "near future." So far we have NOT received 100% official confirmation (i.e. an LA/Bioware press release), and any speculation on a release date is exactly that -- speculation. Plus, we don't know what SOE is going to do with the SWG servers whenever this game goes beta or live.
Frankly, we don't KNOW if it's being "replaced."
EDIT: That's like saying "why should I buy a goldfish when I know, in an indeterminate amount of time, I'm going to have to flush it down the toilet?"
you do know that the near future you refer to is 12 if not 18 months away at least?
hmm why should i play fifa2009 if they are going to make fifa 2010 next year ?
the real question is why would you want to invest time, money, and energy into a game that has twice changed its core game mechanics ?
Regardless if SWG is shut down (it will be), twice before SOE threw out the players work without a second thought.
Because FIFA is not a MMO.
I miss Galaxies. I am sure the PVE is stil fine, even though they blow up PVP every two months, and I mean, EVERY two months.
Why should you go back? No reason. Unless you want screens of your dead guild city, or screens of the amazing sites the game launched with, there really is no reason.
Go outside developers. Hopefully I won't have to pay for those screens. it was a beautiful galaxy once, wasn't it?
I would be more concerned with the horrible gameplay, the dead servers, the large list of bugs and glitches, the lack of collision detection, the fact that SWG will never see another expansion, the amateur development team, and the aweful customer service before I worried about when the game is going to be put out of its misery.
Whether the game is about to be replaced or not (IMO, I'm not yet sold on this current "news"), if you're paying monthly and you're having fun, does it matter?

Because I'm paying - yes it matters greatly.

But if you're having fun for each month that you pay for, then wouldn't you be getting your money's worth?

Absolutely!
But for me it's more then that. In an MMO the community is the game. If I'm looking at a dwindling community then I'm looking at a withering game.
So, my "money's worth" comes from playing a game at it's peak and not it's demise.

Absolutly!
It takes almost a year to "trick" out a toon, in SWG, just to get to the "end-game" content. With the situation now, a new player would just "get there" and hit the "swan song" if the new MMO goes as planned.
I think as it gets closer, we'll all probably see this type of mind-set get more prevelant. This is probably the entire reasoning for not announcing the new MMO in the 1st place.
If you have to ask this question then you shouldn't be playing SWG anyways. Even if SWG doesn't close the game is volatile enough that any progress you make is subject to being reset. The devs have proven many times over they don't respect the players investment into the game. As suggested if you can accept that your only paying for the now and like the game, then fine. However, SWG has always been a game that hasn't been very accepting of those who value continuity.
SW:TOR will probly be out within 3 years so figure Q1 2011 as being a good shoot for release date. I would guess that by the time you want to play biowares game you won't be playing SWG anyways.
Whos to say SWG is going to be replaced? We have a semi, sorta, confirmation that there is a KotoR MMO in the works from a 3rd party company (EA confirmed it, while BioWares is developing it and Lucas Arts is the primary publisher), set for release sometime next year. So the game is 18 months away and the developers and main publisher won't even confirm it even exist? Good money say there will be no Old Republic MMO any time soon, at least in the next couple years. So in terms of Galaxies being replaced in the "near future", its very unlikely.
As for your question... thats really only a question you can awnser. I have been playing Galaxies since launch and still play often and enjoy it very much. So some people around here will tell you that, since I actually play the game, Im (and anyone who says anything positive) simply a fanboy and to not listen to what we say. However, while I post to promote and defend a game I enjoy playing... the "haters" around here quit the game years ago, and for whatever reason still come to the SWG boards just to bash, and downtalk the game. So while they might call people who still enjoy the game "fanboys" what much can be said about them for haveing no life, and comeing to trash a game they left a long time ago.
And this is the problem... especially here, your going to get two very diffrent opinions on the game, and what you should do.Now, I'll tell you my opinion as someone who still actually plays the game... take it for what you will.
First off, its a myth that SWG is dead or dieing. I play on a fairly low pop server and there is almost always quite a few people around... obviouslly not as many as the old days, but enough. If population is a big deal, there are a couple servers that are fairly well populated most of the time. So the games not going anywhere any time soon... because its player base is still more then strong enough to support the game for quite some time to come.
And don't worry about major changes to the game messing up your character more then any other game. The developers have learned their lesson, and the game is very stable now in terms of major changes. Hell in all my years playing Ultima Online my mage has gone from powerfull, to near useless and back a dozen times over... its the nature of an MMO. For better or for worse, the changes the devs made all thoes year ago were needed... some players go did in fact get screwed, but thats life. Its not something that is a future worry in Galaxies.
So lets for the sake of disscusion say the KotoR MMO comes out in two years. There is by no means any guarantee its going to be a good game, or that its going to appeal to current Galaxies players. It might be a game that most Galaxies players end up hateing... we just don't know right now. But either way, as long as there are players in SWG... its not going to be shut down simply because another SW MMO comes out.
People have been predicting the death of Galaxies for years... when in reality the situation in game and with the game is far better then they say. Bottom line: Go and try the free Trial. If you like the game as it currently is, stay and play it. Its not going anywhere any time soon.
Have we been playing the same game? And my subs are still valid until Oct and Nov. It seems the way some talk about SWG, there are 2 of them out there.
SWG, even in that last 14 months has CHANGED drasticlly. This is the argument that current players use to entise "vets" into coming back. I believe the catch phrase is "It ain't NGE, anymore". You may have liked the CHANGES but to tell someone that the game is not CHANGING anymore is completely false. Every patch contains some CHANGES to existing code somewhere. They even just made a "stealth nerf" to spawns recently. I left SWG cause they CHANGED Hermatic Touch when it had been the way it was for the entire 2 years I was playing. Even they are CHANGEING their recent CHANGES. Can you say "block" and diminishing returns? They just re-made expertise, with GU-whatever, for most professions. Ask any BH, Jedi, mando, or smuggler if the game hasn't CHANGED in the last few months. Mando and smuggler may like some of the CHANGES. Not all professions did, however. My toon was "grey" jedi. Ooopppsss, that ain't there anymore, either.
SOE Austin still could care less about player accomplishments, in game. They CHANGE it on their beckon whims or nightmares.
As for the "dead servers", I played on Kauri until last Dec when I paid $200.00 to transfer to Bria. Try Kauri and ask yourself if the population is enough.
KOTOR is a looooooooooong way from release. If you want to play a SW MMO then your only choice is SWG. That's why. If you think SWG is a piece of garbarge now, like I do, then play something else such as WAR which is bound to atleast be a fun MMO.
People hear that KOTOR is confirmed and they start speculating that it will be out in a couple of years lol. Please....2012 if we are lucky. You know how games just get pushed back over and over. Besides, with all the negativity around SWG they will be reluctant to put anything out that is sub-par.
You don't have to have your identity invested into a game in the way that you describe in order to not want to play only to lose what you have worked for in the relatively near future
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
you should not
It's not that simple with mmorpgs and their persistent worlds. Why put time and effort into a character today if it's not going to be around tomorrow? That is his concern.
You answered your own question.
"Everything is mine and your woman too"
Not to point out the obvious here, but I will, any MMO you play you will sooner or later loose everything when the game finally shuts down, it is only a matter of time in one way or another. You die in rl, the game closes, you get banned, eh whatever, nothing is perm in any game or for fact anything in life, so why play it? Because they are having fun? That might be it! You might not find fun in it, but doesn't mean others do, this thread is a pure attempting at trolling.

Considering we're on the third page , And the op has yet to add further comment . I'd say you are correct.

Do you REALLY think that Bioware and EA can make a game like SWG with all its features?
I cant wait for their version of housing system, crafting, space simulation, player cities...

Because theres no proof to even think about that your character wont be around tomorrow.
SOE doesnt look like it plans to shut SWG down in the next 2-3 years, i wouldnt be surprised if they announce expansion for the next year actually. Theyre adding a lot of stuff into SWG, to be honest, the next year might be the best of SWG, as it gets into better shape. Wait for the info from Fan Faire!
Even if the much discussed Bioware MMO is KOTOR, not every one that is a Star Wars fan is a KOTOR fan or vice versa.
As I recall, speculation for the Bioware MMO that is the topic of much debate is currently suggested to have a potential release of 2011. So even if that date is correct, that is at least 2 years of no Star Wars MMO competition on the market.
Personally, I am not a KOTOR era fan of the Star Wars genre, and as such will probably stay with SW:G until they shut the servers off for the last time.
If the Bioware MMO is Star Wars, I would probably look into it for certain. But will I like it? Will it be a "sandbox" like Pre-NGE or Pre-CU or Pre-Patch 9 SW:G? No one knows.
What do we know for a fact about the Bioware MMO that is suggested to be KOTOR? I seem to recall that they said that it would Have MMO features. Beyond that, I am not sure.
I do know that I am not thrilled with EA's track record, nor do I recall hearing great things about the KOTOR 2 release and game.
Ultimately? Time will tell.
For right now? SW:G is the only game in town for a MMO that will let you experience anything like Living in the Star Wars Universe.
And I feel that ALL the Players of SW:G; whether happy or not, will agree that it is the only game like it out there.
