This has all been terribly fascinating but irrelevant, as someone has yet to tell me how I should pronounce 'Matis'. What about my needs, people?
For that matter, I've given the manual a once over and I can't find what or who 'Ryzom' actually is according to the setting. I gotcher Atys, got some Ma-Duk and a Yrkanis (long-may-his-shining-face-give-life-to-the-leaves) -- but no Ryzom.
Anyhow, I now return you to the semi-fresh start discussion, already in progress.

First off, to those people who are posting in reply to my posts, and who are doing so in an attempt to describe the game to me as if I have never seen it and played it for myself.. well I have seen it and played it for myself :]
So back to answering stuff..
I take no pleasure in the idea of anyone losing any of their progress, dunno how anyone could have gotten that idea, but I do assume that my brand of humor is not one that everyone 'gets', so thats ok.
So, about the vets wanting to keep their world and doing their darnest to convince me that it would be for the best to play in their world..
Why would I interpret it as being kind of selfish brats, to quote SaM? Because in a way it is, you dont want to lose your progress, your history, you dont want to have to strive in a new, untainted world.. why would you? I wouldn't, in your shoes. You've been there, done that (most with handholding from elders probably). You want new players to join your world and add to your story, not go off on some new server for their own story. You are all doing your best to try to convince me (and anyone who might be following the thread) that it is for the best to join your sandbox, not build a new one next to yours.
That is perfectly natural human behavior. Dont take it as an attempt to poke fun or insult anyone, that's just the way humans are. All of us.
So... you all repeat the same arguments, arguments which are not particularly logical.
See, all the old timers repeat the same thing, "its all about having us around, the game would be meaningless without us", and seem to forget that there was a time when there was no players at all, and then the game launched for the first time.
They all repeat the same thing, "its not about being powerful and leveling" , to which of course I can say I am well aware of, having actually played the game myself for some time.
They say that without their high 'level' people the game is not possible, due to not being able to have gear etc to level, to which I say, that's just silly, how do you think they did it in the first place? They didn't need high levels to hold their hands, they forged ahead through the wilds and prevailed. They made their own gear, and they didn't need fancy schmancy supergear from older players.
They say a new server would just attract oldtimers who would drag their old history into the fresh start, and lord it over the server, to which I say: you are the old timers, chose to not do that. Why would you want to ruin the new experience? Tsk.. selfish
And they repeat the description of what the game is, over and over, so I guess not everyone is reading all the posts by everyone. That's fine.
Ok, time for my morning coffee n nicotine break.. enjoy replying.. or not if you feel it would waste your time, you passive aggressive types you.
I am concerned that new players, not just now, but 3 months after launch will look at posts like randomt's and say "screw it, there is no place for me in Ryzom", thinking that they have missed the window of opportunity to be a player on the Atys stage. That is why I am posting, to say I do not agree with that view point.
It is true that within the existing world someone has already been there and done that but that doesn't mean someone is there and doing it. There is also no guarantee the existing world will not change.
Hopefully, right now is a golden opportunity to join the saga, that new chapters, plots and conflicts will soon start. Even if they do not, there is more then enough to keep a player who enjoys the environment intrigued for a very long time.
Events in the past have not always been started by server wide announcements and forum posts. A lone forager in the wilderness or a shopper in the city can and have heralded changing times.
In the past level had little to do with the Saga. I suspect that will not change.
Ryzom is a world that is changed and created by the players. The state of the world is a development that took 3 years or more by the players. The characters and personalities developed the same way.
Restarting Ryzom from scratch is not about gear, mats or levels. It's about it being a different world and that would be sad
Saying all that, a complete reset is better than no Ryzom. I would still break an arm and a leg to play.

Oh I don't think so, that's like saying EQ2 been's out for 4 years, it must have no place for me. That may be actually be true of EQ1 because back then the devs lacked the vision to keep up with newbie areas and did not make an effort to attract new players and bring old players back down levels (by rolling alts), but in eq2 that has been addressed a LOT.
Ryzom doesn't even fall into that category.... It's not linear like those games and there should always be someone to play with. I had people team with my newbie butt and it was awesome they took places I would have died multiple times going to on my own and they helped me get a few levels and showed me where to find stuff to harvest...
Anyway I'm going off topic that's not what I wanted to say, what I want to say is that it's completely viable to start an older game at any time nowadays, so I don't think people would just not give Ryzom a chance based on someone else's ideologies. At least I hope not, make up your own minds people! ^_^
I like the beginning of this game/the free to try area. But knowing the game was not finished kept me from subscribing to it. Finish this game, and I will pay $ to play it. Keep it as is, no $$$. Game was just beautiful with nice mechanics...again for a few levels that I played/explored. Also very nice people to meet and explore with.
The game isn't unfinished so much as unpolished. The core game mechanics and content are all there. The only 'unfinished' element that I was aware of was the Ring (which allows player made content).
It really is unfortunate that the Ryzom devs chose to skimp on some of the basics - cos I can see how that might make the game appear unfinished to new players.
I take no pleasure in the idea of anyone losing any of their progress, dunno how anyone could have gotten that idea, but I do assume that my brand of humor is not one that everyone 'gets', so thats ok.
But everyone losing their progress is exactly what a wipe would mean. I have said it before and I'll say it again - anyone arguing for a wipe is an outright thug.
Could anyone seriously, eg. imagine Blizzard starting up a thread in the WoW forums suggesting "New subscriptions are slowing down so we're thinking about completely wiping the player database..."
Of course not, and Ryzom's no different. Not only would it be wrong, it would be financial suicide. MMO players expect permanency for their characters. It's why MMOs generally steer clear of permadeath and why any MMO that expects to stay in business will never wipe their player database.

But seriously, no-one's arguing that. The argument that has been made, and that you pointedly ignore, is that the existing player database is a valuable resource.
Who helps out new players to get gear?
Who treks new players between zones?
Who shows new players where to find stuff?
Who organises fun activities for new players?
And the reason there's so many players available to do these things... they've been playing for ages, have already maxed a few skills and are just enjoying their time in Ryzom. Sure, they work on extra skills but having already maxed several there's no urgency to it.
I think this is one of the key reasons that Ryzom has such an awesome community - which is one its biggest assets. Wiping the player database wouldn't change who the people who make up that community are, but it would change their focus and capacity to help new people for some time.
And FYI, I at least am no vet. I only played for a few months and my highest skill was only 160'ish. My view on this is as one of those new players and the huge positive influence that the existing playerbase had on my time in Ryzom.
They say a new server would just attract oldtimers who would drag their old history into the fresh start, and lord it over the server, to which I say: you are the old timers, chose to not do that. Why would you want to ruin the new experience? Tsk.. selfish
Personally, I think that if there really was a high demand for a "fresh start" in Ryzom that a new server would be the solution. It's a perfect win-win.
The point that has been made (repeatedly) is that this has been tried before, unsuccessfully. The people pointing this out aren't arguing against it. They're just pointing out that it's unlikely to happen because it has been unsuccessful, and even if it does it probably won't be all that you want it to be.
If you seriously want a new server, I think you'd have to start by suggesting to the new owners that they survey former subscribers and those who accessed the free trial to see why they stopped/didn't subscribe and if they'd return for a new server.

(Disclaimer - New player here. I played the game briefly, probably less than you did, but real life got in the way and I wandered off.)
The quoted bit is what's confusing me. I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about by "history". What don't you want the veterans to bring over, exactly?
A new server would mean veterans would start at the same character level as new players, yes. However, the veteran players cannot unlearn the experience they've gained from playing, so when it comes to things like "how to craft efficiently" and "where to find the hunting grounds" and whatnot, they'll still have a leg up on the rest of us. They can't choose to unlearn all that. They'll also bring over existing friendships; if Klaus, Sue and Maria were all in the same guild and chat on forums and whatnot, they'll probably want to join forces again on a new server.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the desire to come into a game fresh. As a relatively new player to WoW I found that most people didn't want to interact with me. All the content I'd like to see everyone else viewed as either 1) best avoided or 2) best rushed through, since it was just in the way of getting to level 70 with their other characters. In the sandboxy SWG (pre-CU) new characters often had nothing to offer anyone; all the more experienced characters could do all you could do, just better. It can suck.
Presuming Ryzom has these same problems (people keep saying it doesn't; I'm taking a wait-and-see approach) then a new server won't really change anything. Best thing to do is to wait for a brand-new game that's like Ryzom and dive into it at release.
So... would you elaborate on the bit I quoted? What do you mean by people dragging "their old history onto the fresh and lording it over the server"? How would one lord history over people?
Don't feed the troll is right, this is the second time at least where randomt has put words into other people's mouths. I wonder if he's a politician........... ;D
Just a thought randomt, I think right now is the best chance you'll have to get the Ryzom experience you'ld like. From the posts I've read there will be a lot of new players when Ryzom starts up again. So there is a good chance that a couple of new guilds with new players could form up and do well.
Even if new servers open up, they will probably get dominated in the OP wars by guilds moving over from other servers. There are only so many top level Outposts and I can see where a guild would move over to a new server to have a better chance at the best Outposts.
Unfortunately for you, Ryzom launched years ago -- that's just the way it is.
The chance of a startup for a server were there are no options for players to transfer chars over is just unlikely imo.
Personally I'm sorry that you do not love Ryzom enough to enjoy it in whatever form we can get it. Of course if it really changed too much, I'm sure I would eventually leave myself. But for me, right now I'm much more interested in what will make Ryzom successful than what I would like Ryzom to be for ME.
Personally I think a little less me and a little more whatever it takes to make Ryzom successful will pay off hugely in the future. Ryzom has the ptoential to grow into an even better game if it becomes financially successful.

Lol indeed.. They just can't help it though, despite complaining about it being a waste of time, they just have to answer and defend.
They are still repeating the same answers over and over trying to convince me that their opinion is correct, when really both are correct. And some of course end up showing their true colours in some cases. Great community indeed.. haha
Gahhhhhhh! Going out of my mind just found out Eq2's characters are going to stay ugly forever, so that sub is gone once I'm done exploring Norrath. For people who don't know SOE had promised us a skeletal revamp for years and now it won't happen at all, they have something else planned for looks but meh. Ryzom's characters kick EQ's butt in my opinion. For those that think they are odd, well they are 'alien' in a sense, Atys is not our world it's another planet and I find the models to be very charming once you get over the initial "oh these don't look human.." moment.
I lost all my Ryzom screenies too when I uninstalled the last time, I had meant to move the screenshot folder but I forgot. ; ; All I have is an avatar>>>>
No there is no point to this post, other then: Yay Ryzom!

That's one of the really cool things about Ryzom for me -- the setting is wholly original. On the surface it looks like Random Generic Fantasy, but the best term I can come up with is "science fantasy". You can attempt a bit of correlation -- Matis are Elves, Tryker are hobbits -- but near as I can tell that falls apart under closer scrutiny. It's not simply "D&D except with guns and the occasional Karavan transport ship" either. There's a cohesiveness about the background that works.
As a result, the developers weren't constrained by expectations of a particular genre. If you say "elf paladin" you have all the baggage that comes with D&D: classes and levels and dungeon crawls and whatnot. This is one place I think Star Wars Galaxies fell down. You had people (for example, me) who came to the game expecting a lot of developer content that related closely to the source material, and instead got a sandbox world that often seemed at odds with the source material. (There were scads of other problems with SWG at launch, true, but the near-vacuum of developer setting content was a big one.)
By rooting (pun! hah!) Ryzom in a completely original setting the devs were a lot more free in making the gameplay flow however they wanted. They chose to make a practically freeform world, something rare in the MMO universe, and I'm glad.
My biggest concern is the stability of Ryzom's new owners. Everything can change given time, but what's the point if the game will come up only for 3-4 maybe even 6 months before shutting down again. This sort of history I feel is undeserving of Ryzom from the early builds I played, it was fun back then, but this reminds me of Horizons, where it keeps coming in a lesser form than before and loses even more credibility.
Furthermore, how can this even achieve market survivability in terms of competitors and free to play mmo's. The gameplay is gameplay, but why would anyone want to play Ryzom at 14.99 a month, if this is the price, when they could play something else such as WAR, WOW or LoTRO. The only thing I could say is that this is the only sandbox fantasy MMORPG that shares the same mechanics as other games in the genre.
What I feel is that only older players come back and the title will never attain viability. That can be fun, but I look at an MMO as an investment. I don't want to invest my time into something that won't be there in six months anyway.
I respect the sheer tenacity you have for Ryzom and it moves me but unless something drastic happens, it's done. I wish to be proven wrong.
Well I wish that too, I don't think anyone can really say it's going to last or go down again yet, but we can hope. I will give it my sub when I can and if it goes down then it goes down. Investment? It's a game, in my view they are meant to be experienced while having fun. Even if Ryzom doesn't survive this latest rebirth it won't change the fact that I had a grand time while it was there.
Though I can see your reasoning and I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one waiting on the sidelines while waiting to see what happens. Istaria I guess is doing fine now.... As for why would people play Ryzom instead of the other games, why would you play LotrO and not WoW? It's basically the same game?! Choice, they all have something the other lacks you just have to decide what it is that you enjoy more and pick the one(s) you like playing more. I missed Ryzom and couldn't believe it when Gameforge announced it's bankruptcy, I mean they had just celebrated 3 years and I was ready to resub... I played those other games but none of them evoked the same feelings for me except for FFXI. They are good distractions for a while but they just seem repetitive after a while, so is Ryzom but somehow I had a more pleasant time there and I didn't feel so alone. I play MMO's and even in groups and in a guild I still feel alone.. What the hell? ^_^
Maybe it's a matter of perspective but FFXI and Ryzom I felt more connected, that's my experience and I'm sure other people had more fun in WoW, EQ ect... But that doesn't mean Ryzom isn't worth 14.99 a month, if they don't intend to have events, either live or scripted, and no updates then sure hopefully they'll charge less..
Right now actually my most pressing thing is who the heck owns Ryzom? Who exactly is this Spiderweb, and what are their plan(s)? Nevrax people are still involved apparently? I'd love to know how things are going down right now and have some kind of feel for what the community can expect. But at this point I'm willing to say whatever, and just play when the servers are available to the public and not regret quitting again.

Great community indeed.. haha
No, not a politician, just a bored random tard :]
I wants Ryzom!!!!!!!!!!
