I was actually quite sad about the AoC community on a whole. Many immature people, many many immature people. While there is some decent people, I'd say the majority of people known are very immature.
I still find it amusing that anyone thought a game that marketed their inclusion of nudity and gore (basically boobies and buckets of blood) as a major selling point would expect a mature player base.
"Because we do not feel it is appropriate for childrens minds to be exposed to the full world." We were talking about playing video games...
"In the real world they will be put into situations they have yet to be prepared for and do not fully understand regardless of their maturity level."
It is good to see there are people like you and your guild out there to police the gaming worlds we love to have fun in. I mean if it wasn't for you and yours "protecting" the young ones from the harsh realities of everyday life...from inside a video game...you never know. They might strap on elf ears and go shoot up an auction house...
We are not just talking about in the video game here. Most guilds and groups within games these days use web cams, messengers and headsets to communicate as well. They are being exposed to the most extreme sexual content and twisted language. Guild members often get together and party in reality, and this is not an environment that a child should be exposed to until they are mature enough to handle these situations. They may use this content to form their opinions of relationships or how to deal with social settings, and that is definately not a good thing.
And no we are not policing them, we just choose to not include them in our conversations. We are not their babysitters, the internet should not be their babysitters, their parents should be.
lol ummm ok. How many kids actually want to get into a 18+ guild? And any guild that does have that requirement, are usually doing less then favorable things. Your talking like most of the guilds in MMO's have an age limit, and ive only heard of them, ive never seen one. Your talking about such a small amount of guilds in the MMO community, i just dont see how it can relate the to the topic.
Also i never mentioned 18+ guilds, YOU did. I was only mentioning that age =/= maturity. If i did want to start a thread about guilds with an age limit, i would have mentioned it in the Original post. But GJ on derailing my thread.

There are many very large 18+ guilds in games, The last one I was in was around 600 members. See the life cycle pretty much goes like this. We are little kids we like all kinds of crazy things and run amuck, then we become older children where we think that everything we liked when we were little is now " childish " and "immature" and that we are too mature now to like such things, then you become an adult.. and you start to do crazy things again and run amuck... but now you are held accountable. This is because when you become an adult, you realize life is too short not to enjoy it while it lasts.

I was responding to all of the posts on this thread before mine, not just yours, I saw the guild topic brought up by another member and responded to that. In the last 10 years of playing mmos, I have known of many adult guilds, not just the ones I have been in. There is a difference between what you think is mature and having a mature mind. What is considered questionable in the first place is a matter of culture. Not everyone is in agreement on what exactly is mature and immature and what is questionable and what is not.

It will be interesting to see how todays kids are in 20 years. Itll also be interesting to see how they differ in social growth having spent a good deal of their time online. Some say it retards social growth, I guess time will tell.
It does. I cant talk to girls, or even make friends that dont know the internet terms. They just seem like weirdos, because i have nothing else to talk about except internet phenomnons and Online games.
See gotta learn the off line stuff. I keep up with baseball and football and general pop culture.
Lot more to it than just learning outside stuff. A measure of maturity has to do with a lot of factors. Compassion, insight, tolerance, patience, just to name a few, these are things you learn through human interaction, and I mean real interaction, not just fake facades people put up while online.
Yeah kinda of figured that was a understood thing and then you pick the other stuff to add to it.

that actually never works. any such comment just leads to more flaming no matter what.
Yeah Ive found that to be ture. You basicly just have to hope he isn't leader then get him booted.

Every time I see a post in this thread by Deviliscious about the "dangers" of mature guild environments I can't help but be reminded of The Guild. If you don't know what I'm referring to, check it out at http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=EE93D30C5588A850
being a 20 something, I can say that some of the most annoying people ive ever gamed with were 20 somethings, and really young kids.
I dont want to listen to you cry, but I also dont want to listen to you talk about your porn and burping into the mic. I once ran a guild where we tried to keep it adult. It was rediculous what people would talk about while were playing the game.
They would argue "its an adult guild, thats why we dont have kids." We ended up showing them the way out a few weeks later and it was the best decision ive ever made.
To this date I refuse to restrict based on age. Its a game, and we intend to play it. If you want to talk about something you dont feel comfortable having a kid hear, I probably dont want to hear it either, so you can keep it to yourself and tell it to your buddies friday night over a beer.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
everyone has seen somebody say "im glad all the little kiddies are asleep, now we can have some decent convo's now" or something similar to that. Or maybe one that involves a statement about 12 year olds. Yeah well, the AOC community is a great example of age =/= maturity I have never seen so many hardcore trolls and foaming at the mouth pissed of customers before, and these are all peopel who played and tried the game, people who were supposed to be mature and above the age of 18. I quit using stereotypes 2 years ago, its really pointless imo, why look at the persons age behind the character when you should be looking at how the person reacts to specific events.
I agree.
This is why I don't 100% understand age limits in guilds. I've seen kids act more mature than adults in many situations, people should not be judged differently because of their age. I've made friends, old and young, and have never thought of a player more/less mature because of their age.
This is too true mike. One of the most mature well spoken people I have ever met online was only 14 years old. Then again I've met plenty of 20-30 year olds that act worse than any kid. I've used this stereotype myself at times but when I use it I usually am referring to maturity level and not the persons age directly. I usually accuse people of acting like kids and not that they are kids themselves.

LMAO!! I have seen that before that is hilareous! But in all honesty the only person in that guild that we might have admitted to our guild was the asian chic. The rest would have been weeded out through the interview process. hahahah!
that actually never works. any such comment just leads to more flaming no matter what.
In some instances, it will. Hence the part of my post you cut off at the top.
It all comes down to whether they're genuinely an obnoxious bossy know it all, or someone who is just trolling.
Chances are, someone who's just trolling can be spotted from a mile away, so i avoid all interaction with them to begin with. On the other hand, someone oblivious could take a hit to their pride.

I am sorry to be this way, but you seriously do not know what we kids are exposed to these days. I am currently 16. I am a junior in highschool, and i switched to a private school after middle school due to financial aid and scholorships. I must tell you, that kids today are not mindless, sheltered idiots, although many of them are idiots. In MIDDLE SCHOOL, from 6th to 8th grade, there was more sexual talk, drug refrenses, alcahol refernese, and so on, than you could possibly imagine or even comprahend. I know people that got preagnent in middle school, got expelled for drugs in middle school, and everything else you could think of.
Private school, against many peoples ideas, are not a place for snobby rich kids. although there are plenty of em in my school. There is just as much sexual talk, if not more, then middle school. There are idiots, there are druggies. And i do not doubt that one person in my school doesnt google pornagraphic and sexual material on a nightly basis, if not more. Kids are not sheltered like you say. Kids these days are getting into gang fights. Kids these days are cusing out their teachers. Kids these days party and drink, do drugs, and anything else you can think of.
You believe that the internet isnt a place for kids. Kids are actually growing into your "Adult" frame of mind at an earlier age then ever before. Frankly because of the internet. No matter what parents do to pretect their children, no matter what you do to protect us from the "Horrors" of the real world, we see it daily on the Movie Screen, Tv Screen, and Computer Screen. Kids these days are exposed to more then most adults could ever dream of. And i know that from personal experience.
@devilicious; You red text is really annoying and burn my pretty eyes. Please stop. Also, you must really not be mature you and your guild. Because mature guild are mature enough to talk about stuff that is not extreme and that 90% of the > teens < ( because child never get into serious guild ) can give their opinions about and not be shocked. Also your little avatar and your name tell us a lot about your maturity. At least you have good spelling.
PS: Im a french canadian so my my english may not be the best... but at least I dont use ''U'' instead of you and other similar stuff.

Actually you have not told me anything I did not know already. ConsideringI had my own apartment at the age of 15 and was my own legal guardian I am fully aware of what is going on with kids these days. 15 year olds always think they know what is best for them, they think they know everything there is to know about life already, and are near impossible to convince otherwise. It is not until later, many not until much later in life that you look back and realize how could I be so wrong? What is a big problem with children and the internet is that they do not get the chance to develop their relationships properly.
The nervousness, the way that social relationships develop in person is the way it is supposed to be. Removing all the "worry" of talking to someone face to face is not a good thing when it comes to devloping real relationships. There is a level of understanding, compassion, anxiety, tolerance, and responsibility that is obtained from a mature mind that is not gained from thinking you are mature. Honestly if you think you are ready for something, you have alot to learn. Mature minds know that they are never ready. Online I have seen 53 year old truck drivers dating 12 year olds and grannys dating 16 year olds, is this a common occurance in reality? Well not where I live, we have laws against this. There is a reason they separate these people in real life why should that be accepted online?
Actually most kids these days would be shocked as to hear about what we did when we were kids... we were the reason they added cameras to schools, why they have to search students, why they have so many rules in place now. Yes we are to blame for that, because of courese as kids we pushed everything passed the limits. We had raves, mosh pits, mass block parties, bar hoppin at 15 and were not oversheltered either. But we had real consequences to our actions, we lived and we learned. Sitting in front of your computer is not developing proper relationships, social skills, or really living at all. It is not a substitute for life, and so many kids these days seem to think it is.
The whole idea that " woo hoo! the kiddies left we can have some fun now" is that any responsible adult acts "child appropriate " around children. After the kids go to bed , we can let loose and talk about the fun stuff . That is being responsible, and the way it should be. That is the way it is in most work places, the way it is in most households, and the way it should be on the internet. So where adults want to be able to relax and speak freely, there should always be that option not to play with children in games as well. Go let the kids play with each other... why would that be so bad?
It's not unusual for kids to know what sex is before they're old enough to go to school. And it's not uncommon for 12 year olds to be doing it either.
Most teenagers swear, screw, drink, and a lot of them smoke, including less legal substances.
This isn't news to anyone. It's a well known fact that kids aren't naive little angels.
But if there's a problem, do we just sit back and say "ah well, parental competence lost."?
No. Even if the effort is entirely in vain, at least an MMO guild accepting nobody into the guild that they deem is too young to hear what adults talk about, they're at least doing their part to fight accidental teenage pregnancies.
Sounds way over the top, I know. But if we all paid this much attention to not only other people's kids, but God forbid - our own, many of the problems associated with arrogant know it all teenagers might be abolished.
Sadly that's as unlikely as the whole world joining hands and singing in peace, but one small step from a faceless nobody online is better than everyone else sitting on their ass letting someone else worry about it.

We have color choices for a reason=) but if you must complain feel free to spam me here:
What is mature and what is not mature is subject to debate. Being mature does not mean you are passive, submissive, intolerable, or judgemental. Being mature does not mean you lose your sex drive, humor, or zest for life either. You do not have to be able to type to be mature, you do not have to be able to spell to be mature. It is a state of mind that is achieved by life expieriance.

'Stuck in a group with an annoying pillock? Ask him if he's 12.
If he is, he'll deny it and shut up so as not to draw even more attention to his age.
If he isn't, he'll deny it and shut up so as not continue looking like a brat.'
that actually never works. any such comment just leads to more flaming no matter what.

The rest would have been weeded out through the interview process. hahahah!
On the other hand, someone oblivious could take a hit to their pride.
lol ummm ok.
I changed your red text to white, so people can read it without having their eyes burnt.

They have color choices on here for a reason =[).
Did anyone ever stop to think that stereotypes ARE stereotypes for a reason?
It's just like any other stereotype: yes, there are a lot of <insert group of people here> that DON'T <insert activity>, but most do.
Do deadheads smoke? Yes, most of them.
Do old people love Florida? Yes.
Are most professional American athletes black? Yes.
Are there more liberals in the north than south? Yes.
Do most children/young adults act their age? Yes.

I'm with deviliscious on this one.
