I think a more important point is that months ahead of release Mythic had the integrity to come out and admit they just couldn't get it done and polished in time for release. I'm disappointed, sure, but I'll give them some credit for being upfront about it.
Fc just flat out lied right up top release and enforced the NDA to conceal the glaring short comings of the game.
Mythic have already out classed FC IMO.
Funcom still says the game is optimized for DX10 on their game boxes, yet 3 months into release and they still don't support it. Isn't this something that, you know, should be built up on at the start?
I'm gonna say that I personally think Mythic has run their beta in a professional manner.. I never felt that way about AoC beta.
Yet.. I'm also going to freely state that I bought AoC because I have absolutely no interest in having anything to do with WAR after beta is over.
That's something that is going to have to come down to a personal choice and as such I can only state my opinion. In fact.. I'll also say..
I don't really care how professional or polished your product is.. when its the same regergitated BS I've seen in every other game in the last fews years.. It becomes a very difficult pill to swallow (for me).
If other people love the stuff.. then YAY for them.
But ya.. Mythic has been very professional in every step I've seen... if you want to compare things on that level. /shrug
Personally I'd rather have every game be awesome.. it really doesn't do anything for me.. to see these epic failures... to be honest. It would just be really nice to have this big market of great choices.. to play... instead of what we actually have...
Obviously, good game play and a professional dev team is the brass ring, but if there has to be a choice, i'll take a professional dev team who will fix the game and communicate.
IMO, couple examples of a good dev team and a well made game, NCSoft's CoX and Turbine's LOTRO. Say what you will about the games themselves, the dev teams on both are top notch, and they have both have stable fun games.
FC failed in communication, fixes, ideas, patches (and notes), and even the official forums are garbage.
Even in a poor state at release, WAR will crush AoC, at least at first. WAR forums will be filled with the usual whining, but at least it won't be because they are treated like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed BS.
The devs at Funcom are in general the type of devs who half-ass things and do not fully think through their ideas. They just come up with things that look good and believe the looks.
CoX did not always have a good dev team, its just that they finally settled on a good dev team. Also CoX had/has a set of players/forum posters who actually reversed engineered the math behind the game and proved beyohd any doubt various aspects of the game and essentially forced the old not-so hot devs to admit they were right about certain problems.
Interestingly arguements about balance on the CoX forum are far more heavily based around metrics, actual real numbers, testing, and calculations than almost any other game i have seen except perhaps Eve and I would say even then CoX players have more bases covered. This may also be because there are so many powerset combinations so arguements eventually need more data and real metrics or it just becomes a "yeah huh, not unh" arguement.
I personally love this line, "As a customer I don't have to know how to make a better game than you. I just need to know where the cancel button is."
Having traversed across the sea of MMOs and experiencing each for short and long term, I have found myself disappointed and *sigh* bored with the choices available.
I, too, travelled from my end game raiding in WoW to AoC and found myself in a pickle. Shall I continue to build up a character to which I have no interest? Shall I continue to 'not' enjoy the content, the questing, the pvp, the community (ESPECIALLY, the Community), the graphical splendor (sure the scenery is pretty, but hey, I live in Florida, I'm full-up on pretty scenery)...just because I'm wanting something new? Should I settle?
I didn't and I won't.
So, in this thirst for new-ness, I explored my free trial options. Shall I wander back into a world I previously left behind or should I explore those worlds I haven't yet visited (very few choices here for pay for play)? I decided to trial, again, Everquest 2, DDO and LOTRO and tonight, DAoC. I'm working on some MMO lovin' and finding what it was I enjoyed about each....and realizing what it was I hated, as well.
I would love a superb game...a great game with extensions into the outer regions of my imagination...but I don't see that happening anytime soon and I don't see myself running back to WoW for the greater # of things I DID enjoy.
I'm excited about a few upcoming releases because I'm sure they will bring things new and loved (and a few hated) to the forefront and my faith in software companies may be renewed.
Seriously, The AoC community has to be worst I have ever seen. It's funny how "mature" content brings out a immature group of ppl. It reminds me of Public Transportation where the most damage of property is caused by the people who need to use it..lol. I am trying DaoC trial since there isnt much left to play and there community is the way all games should be. Everyone tries to be helpful...no kids and lonely adults trying to vie for attention like AoC.

For those not liking the fact that the AoC Community has lots of angry people:
Have you considered *why* they would be angry to begin with?
There are trolls and idiots anywhere you go. That's a fact.
But when you have a boatload of players angry over the direction a game is taking (or not taking?), there's got to be some reasons involved.
People aren't pissed off for the sake of being pissed off. Takes alot of energy, actually

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand or feel sympathy for anyone being angry at anything for any reason. There's 'choice'....there's subscribing...there's cancelling. HELL, if you are that angry, perhaps you need to cancel your 30 days free and eat the cost of the software purchase. Why spend your 'energy' tearing apart those who would otherwise like to see what changes are up and coming?
This is how I see it.....
.......you read the reviews, the forums, reveals and the spills.
......you loved what you saw, what you read and were ready for a change
......you either pre-ordered or bought off the shelf
......Installed it, danced like a wood fairy and started to play
......realized the game was not cracked up to what you had hoped it would be
......continued to play but became angry
......trolled the forums, just to vent...finding others venting...so you vented together making all other forum posters and readers alike wishing you would fall into a pit of poisonous vipers
......continued to play but became angry
Angry at what, really? At your own disappointment? At your inconvenience, financially and personally becuase you bought a game you don't like or don't feel will move forward? Chalk it up to....I've wasted 49.99 (or more with the collectors edition) like so many other folks have already done...and move on. Stay out of the forums if you aren't playing...and if you are playing and STILL angry....time to consider alternative options. I don't know anyone in their right mind who would hate a game and continue to play it....just because.

There are reasons why retail establishments have corporate return policies on Software/Game exchanges in-store. There was a flux of people buying games, not liking them and then returning them for other games they may soon learn to dislike as well. Chalk it up..you paid..you hate...now, walk away.

Their community speaks for itself. I'm sure their moderators are slightly better than the poor product they represent. Tough call though.
It's harsh but necessary. They've lost control of they're forums, their pallbearer's here are approaching dangerous ground.

he's right, I mean that community, I'd say the only good community in the game is probably the guild
