EQ - played for 3 years, nothing else like it. too addicting
AC - played for a couple of months, not the best graphics but enjoying.

...those are really the only two I actually liked but to add the next 3

DAOC - 1 month....blah everyone looked the same
AO - pvp was so horrible compared to eq I almost cried.
AC2 - no comment, played open beta for 3 days that was enough.

Are we talking about games that are out?

    I'll do my top five.

    1) Ultima Online [First played back in 1994!] lol
    2) Meridian 59 [Also played in that same time as UO]
    3) Star Wars Galaxies
    4) EVE
    5) Guild Wars? [if you consider it a MMORPG]

    My top 5 MMORPGS:

1st place: Anarchy Online (although I don't like ShadowLands expansion)

2nd place: Ultima Online (I loved Ultima Online before AOS)

3rd place: EVE online (even with it's poor skill and crafting systems)

    4th place: DAoC

    5th place: Star Wars Galaxies

  • iceseraphiceseraph Member Posts: 202

    1. Asheron's Call - (first MMO - overall favorite - even though its now outclassed graphically)

    2. Asheron's Call 2 - (Great fun until its technical issues several months after release)

    3. DAoC (good graphics - nice pvp approach - a little too group oriented)

    4. EQ (a little too group oriented - but overall well done)

    5. AO (Very very tedious - too much camping - landscape has a dreary gloomy feel )

Note on my comment of being 'too group oriented". While I realize these are MMOs, sometimes its nice to have a solo adventure from time to time without certainty of death - lol.

Upcoming games - I think EQ2 shows incredible potential.

Interesting thread... far more effective gauge then the mmorpg.com rating system.

    Anyway;

    My top 5;

    1) Asheron's Call - been awhile since I played it, but I was hooked when it first came out. Great design, smooth control, and considering going back even with how dated it is.

    2) Ultima Online - I'm talking about the original here, before EA started screwing with the original design. It lost all of it's charm for me now, but back in the day, this was the best.

    3) Final Fantasy XI - my current addiction, though getting old being forced to group with people that would rather play solo or tell people how they should play. Great graphics, solid gameplay, diverse job classes.

    4) EVE Online - the best in the graphics department. Very relaxing game too, but the idea of waiting forever for a particular skill to train, regardless of how much time I put into playing it, drops this baby down to #4.

    5) Asheron's Call 2 / Dark Age of Camelot tied - Couldn't decide for my #5. Both of these were fun games, but didn't hold my interest much longer then a couple months each.

    5 WORST games ever... I hated these games for many reasons. I kept giving them a chance, but they just always irritated the crap out of me;

    1) Star Wars Galaxies - damn ppl, how the $^%& can you play this piece of &#*$??? Still disturbingly buggy this long after release, and SOE just keeps making it worse. Will these people ever figure out to fix what is broken before changing what is functional??? I played this game for too long, having mastered half a dozen professions and not finding any area without big problems.

    2) Everquest - I never understood what people saw in this game. From the days of UO, where it was 'us' or 'them', I'm just damn confused how a game this boring, ugly, and difficult to control (at release anyway) get so popular.

    3) Planetside - As you see, Sony is really making their impression on me. There isn't a better way to get on my bad list then to offer a FPS and ask people to pay monthly for it.

    4) Lineage 2 - kill, kill, kill, kill... fun for 10 minutes then I'll run to the nearest FPS or Diablo 2 for free thank you very much. To play a mmorpg just to kill something or someone over and over again is a waste of money. Don't need to pay monthly to do that.

    5) Recent onslaught of korean mmorpgs. These games all feel the same, and I rather play their daddy Diablo 2, if anything.

1 - Lineage: The Blood Pledge (a.k.a. Lineage 1 or Lineage:The Cross Rancor)

2 - Ultima Online (back in the good ol days)

    3 - Lineage 2: The Chaotic Chronicle

    4 - EVE Online

    5 - Ragnarok

    --------------------------------
Games Played - Lineage, Lineage 2, Helbreath, RuneScape, EVE Online, Rubies of Eventide, Priston Tale, Tibia, RYL, Dark Eden, Savage Eden, Astonia III, Ashen Empires, El Kardian, Fung Wan Online, Project Entropia, Ultima Online, Ragnarok Online, Redmoon, Star Wars Galaxies, Thesa, Conquer Online, Deloria, Fairyland, MU Online, Legends...

Top 5 I would have to say for me would be:

    1. Everquest - You cant beat the original 3d mmorpg that started the craze

    2. Dark Age of Camelot - Came through in a time of mmorpgs that something fresh was needed

    3. The Sims Online - Dont shoot me but this was highly enjoyable and yes it is an rpg

    4. Final Fantasy XI - Played the beta and was highly impressed... but thats as far as i played it

    5. Everquest II - Takes 5th billing because I have not yet played it but believe it needs a standing

    1. GuildWars : E3 for Everyone was a mind blower. Finally a Fantasy ORPG where HUMAN skills are involved. Brainless beware!

    2. UO : Interaction with the world and its players. Way better than the new EQ-like craps we can now see.

    3. AC : The first one was good. I liked the ideas and the gameplay.

    4. AO : Beta tested the first one. Great basis and concepts. Fresh Non-Fantasy mmorpg.

    5. RoT or whatever it is called right now. The gameplay concepts are arousing.

    Top 5 I HATE!!!!! :

    1. EQ : God damn mindless "gain levels, kill harder monsters, get better items" addictive game... wasted 3 years on that one. Thanks eBay!

    2. Lineage 2 : Ahhhhhhhhhh! I wouldn't want it unless they paid me 12$+/hour to play it.

    3. WoW : Damn, waited years for it, it turned out to be an EQ clone, with improved graphics, improved questing, but still the mindless "gain levels, kill harder monsters, get better items".

    4. RO : I can't believe some people REALLY have fun playing this.

    5. EQ II : So hyped by the carebears newbrigants SOE loving casual time wasting, family breaking fans. A good community can be found in ANY game, so it is no reason to chose THIS one because it has nothing else to get the players immersed.

"I am trying to see things from your perspective but I just can't get my head that far up my @$$."

Let's see....my top 5 games that are out:

    1. Everquest - My first MMORPH back before Kunark was released.  Played for 4 years+  Like someone else stated...you just hate to love the game.  But I made more friends in that game that I'm still in contact with than any other game I've ever played.

    2. Anarchy Online - Really really loved this game even though only playing it for 3 months.  Great concepts that I saw "implimented" into many other games.  Just didn't have the kind of community that I had come to know and love in EQ.

    3. Final Fantasy XI - Another game that I really liked.  The major problem that this game had was the fact that they released this game a year earlier in Japan and then put the NA players onto the same servers.  It didn't give us a fair chance and the communication problems were unbearable.

    4. Dark Ages of Camelot - Played when it first release for about 3 months...got to lvl 40 and got bored off my arse. Yes I know they've added more since then but after a game has left a bad taste in my mouth I don't go back.

    5. City of Heros - As many other have stated....great distraction for the one month that I actually played it.  Was too repetitive for my taste but it did set the bar for character customization.  I hope more games take a look at it and "impliment" some of those idea's.

    Games I can't wait for:

World of Warcraft - Have been a huge fan of Blizzard since The Lost Vikings.  We'll see how well they do at their first shot on an MMORPH.

Everquest 2 - I told myself I wouldn't play any more SOE product after EQ and watching my roommate play SWG.  But after much research and reading boards for months on end I decided to go ahead and pre-order it and loved what I saw and the new and refreshing idea's that they're implimenting.

    1. UO - just couldnt get enuff of it.. filled the void playing this with Starcraft till..

    2. DOAC - Great pvp. the lvling part is boring but its part of the game.

    3.  FFXI - great game nothing bad to say about it.

    4. AC - great fun but a dying game.

    5. WOW - it was stress but it already made the list.

    You just got Bootyknocked

  • LumaLuma Member UncommonPosts: 34

    1. AC2 good game nice story, crafting system is boring when you are forced to do a little bit of it.

    2. City of Heroes-great game has some of great features ie never stop gaining xp, no auto-attack, and being able to download patch early. downside it is a wash rinse repeat aspeaialy when you run out of quest for your lvl. but than again all mmo's have a wash rise repeat if you think about it

    3. FF XI- fist game that I actually got that some of my RL friends played, downside can't pick server, no real help on were to go for quests.

4.SWG- good game first game i had an account to, liked the idea of three class allowing you to play the way you wanted, bad all meaningful quests were group quests.

Wow-played stress test good game but after playing COH and hearing wash rise repeat from other players I started to notice it in Wow-still a good game

Nothing at all currently or in the near term will stack up to the mmorpg range and development that the first 3 will.

    1. Trials of Ascension: http://www.shadowpool.com/index.php

    2. Darkfall Online: http://www.darkfallonline.com/

    3. Mourning: http://www.realmsofkrel.com/

    4. WoW - best short term offering i think.

1- Everquest.... What an awesome feeling when I  wandered around Freeport for the first time with all the other newbies, and  seeing my first Griffin killing everyone the east common zone.I made a lot of friends, what a great atmosphere for a long time. All MMORPGs from here on out  will be compared to this one.

2- UO... My first online gaming experience my gosh I spent hours on this baby.

3- DAOC ... As others have already stated I loved the PvP aspect of this game , getting to the point that you could fight others was not as fun, but a very solid game to this day.

4-EQ2... From the screenshots to the familier EQ world, I cannot wait to meet new friends, challenges, and new lands...ANTICIPATION...

5-Planetside... different, fun, for a month or 2.

    WORST- SWG, SHADOWBANE, HORIZONS, AC,AO

Interesting thread, I was looking exactly at this kind of information.

    1. EverQuest.  It's the king.

    2. World of WarCraft.  It's the new king.

    3. Dark Age of Camelot.  It's pretty good.

    4. Drakkar.  A lot of fun.  Old school props!!!

    5. City of Heroes.  I really like this game...but I can't play it for too long.  The lack of loot makes it less desirable to a power-gamer type, which I tend to be.

What are you talking about??  Gemstone III is still alive and well at http://www.play.net  It's just called Gemstone IV now but it's the same game just with a new (easier to use and prettier) interface.  My number 1 game comes from the same company.

#1 Dragon Realms (http://www.play.net) - Leaps and bounds better than any MMORPG in existance today (or even in the foreseeable future).  The game mechanics of this game are amazing and provide for thousands of hours and years of gameplay.  Should have been the prototype of all MMORPGs but sadly, EQ took that title and singlehandedly damaged the MMO market for years.

#2 Asherons Call - Great game for awile.  The component system was flawed and annoying at first though and the game has been gradually destroyed by bots.

#3 Eve-Online - Wonderful game concept and design.  If only I could handle staring at space for prolonged periods of time.

#4 Asherons Call 2 - Don't like the game this month, check back next month.  Enjoyable gameplay and lots of content.  Great crafting system.

#5 A Tale in the Desert - Very unique concept for a game.  If only this game had more professional developers and financial backing, it could move up my top 5 list quickly.

    1) UO- nothing like the old days, so much freedom w/ no buffers or rules.  Still has more depth than every mmorpg out there.

    2) EQ- nobody has done grouping mechanics better.  Personally had some of my best noobie experiences in EQ because mobs were truly dangerous w/ nice settings.

    3) CoH- Very, very fun for like a few weeks.  Then the repetetiveness kicks in and it all comes crashing down, then you realize its a great short-term game because theres nothing to do but fight thugs over and over again for pointless rewards like capes or badges :p

    4) NWN- not sure if its considered mmorpg, but alot of fun if your into Baldurs Gate style rpg, or DnD style games.

    5) DAOC or AO i guess.  Never REALLY got into either game but i liked aspects of both for different reasons.
