PvP in this game seems awfully scripted

YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

From what I read about this game the PvP seems quite scripted. I.E there are pre-defined zones with pre-defined sides and pre-defined starting locations and the objective is to take over some place (kinda like capure-the-flag) and then you defend that place until the other side takes it over.

Is that the case or will there be actual open war? By that I mean player created guilds who can fight other guilds and not over pre-defined "flags" but rather over whatever area they want (like a good leveling spot or quest area)?

the game is following a story. Many of the scenario battles may seem somewhat scripted, but do remember that there is much more emphasis on Open-world pvp.

Well you can't go and have a huge battle in a PVE area (like a leveling spot or quest area) there are places for pvp. But at the end game zones the pvp areas are alot larger than the pve areas so there's lots of places to battle. I.E the Chaos vs Empire end zones, the pvp area is a huge city with burning houses. Looks awesome

ok we are talking about the same people who made DAoC here people.. you all know what they did for RvR..if you watched the podcasts youd know that the more tiers you move up the game gets more based on open RvR then PvE the lower tiers have small RvR areas set off to the side but higher tiers are mainly RvR with a PvE area set off to the side.. and there will be a zone where you can have a guild keep and do open RvR with other guilds.

There will be open RvR servers where you can PvP anywhere that is YOUR LEVEL, if you still try to go to a lower leveled Tier...chicken time baby.

However this isn't an open PvP game, this is not FFA, this is like World War 2. It's a team effort and you're not going to get anything done with infighting and allied guild disputes. So, if you see it as "scripted" then yes, it is. There's objectives you need to capture and the ultimate goal of RvR is to sack the enemy's capital.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

    Order of the White Border.

In any game with pvp you can do that... It's as simple  as gathering both guilds at a meeting spot, flagging, and going at it.

Did I read somewhere that once the capital is attacked it becomes instanced?

Wait for the NDA to lift to get more information on this, but there is more too it that what you have stated. 1 more week or so and I think you will like what you will be hearing.

    Cheers!

Yes you fight your way to the city gates and then you siege the city which is instanced because the entire server in one place would be a lagfest.

Just for the record did you play DAoC?

They had some pretty spelt out objectives in the game too.  However, everyone would get into their teams of 8 and start fling around with hopefully a minstrel type character in their group and find other groups of 8 to massacre.

Finwe on microphones in MMOs: "it'd eliminate l33t speak....But it would bring in ebonics."

It also seems to make it more tactical, not a total zerg v zerg.

Scripted for me, mainly, means that the devs decide what the teams are, where they can fight and what they can fight for. Contrary to players forming their own guilds and declaring war on whatever guild they choose, where they do their fighting and what they want to fight for. Like a leveling spot rather than a keep that the devs have decided you need to take to get some kind of abstract PvP "objective".

Not saying scripted PvP is bad, seems the norm these days, but I rather prefer player run PvP battles and not dev. controlled.

So my question is basically, is there any room for that kind of open FFA PvP or is WAR all about Order vs Chaos (or whatever they are called)?

  • DreamstriderDreamstrider Member Posts: 62

WAR is all against order vs chaos, its not exactly warhammer lore as in the actuall lore it's each race for itself, but order and chaos making temporary alliances (except the orcs that kill everyone) but it fits a lot more than FFA. Somehow I just can't picture high elves teaming up with their dark kin, or orcs teaming up with dwarves.

Order vs Destruction.  No ganking.  Thats basically how it goes, it will not change.  If you want to be able to attack anyone at anytime of any level, this game is not for you.  There is a war and your team fights to further that effort, it is not Guild vs Guild.  It is Realm vs Realm.

In short this is not the style of game you are looking for if you want to have FFA combat.

Warhammer follow Dark Age of Camelot's system, which is RvR. Realm vs Realm, not Guild vs Guild. What you want I take it, is some kind of FFA PvP game, this is not it. Dark Age of Camelot had the most well made and successful PvP to date, and Warhammer will follow in those footsteps. If you're waiting for guild territory control, you're waiting for Darkfall.

And trust me, it's not scripted at all. So many crazy things happened during DAoC RvR, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Its easy read the lore of the game site it set up the whole dynamic for the "Order vs. Destruction" setting and establishes the alliances the binds the groups to each side keeping it from being FFA.

  • Ender4Ender4 Member UncommonPosts: 2,247

It is just a matter of personal preference.  For me it is much easier to make a fun RvR style game than a FFA one.  RvR just naturally blends itself towards a lot of PvP and that is what I'm generally looking for.  Most FFA setups like say AOC lead to rare PvP, I went from level 20-70 in AOC and got in less than 10 fights, in WAR I'll have been in 10 fights by level 10.

I think the only way for FFA to work is to have a game that maximizes player collision so you more or less have to fight over either resources for cities or over the PvE content or something like that.  That is why AOC failed so miserably, you simply cannot instance everything and then go FFA PvP, it doesn't work.

If I remember correctly DAoC had an FFA PvP server but it seems you guys are quite convinced there wont be one at launch so I guess I will have to wait then as I personally cant stand when the devs tell me who I can fight and where and for what.

    Anyway thanks for the info.

Well there will be FFA... with 2 exceptions... you cant attack your own side, meaning order or destruction... and you cant go into a lower level tier to gank... so no killing lvl 10s with lvl 25...

And why would you want to kill low level players or your own side anyway?
