I see the population dropping drastically as new games come out such as Warhammer Online. I see AOC's population dropping to dangerous levels when this happens as well. I bet they will have to shut it down.
LoTRO is a PVE mostly game, so not many will leave it for WAR which is a PVP game. I could see AoC's numbers drop a ton from WAR's release if Funcom doesn't do something within the next few month's though. I have been playing AoC, but got bored at higher levels a good game.. just not enough to do or keep a player interested for more than a month or two.
This is an awesome game to me, the best way to describe it as I see it is a grown up WoW the only problem is population, I really wish some of AoC marketing would get hired by Turbine this game is too good to be so unpopulated It may just be me but playing it made me long for the population that wow had where as in WoW I found myself if anything longing for more time to solo.
I don't agree that it's a "grown up WoW" - it's the precise opposite. The game design is a clear regression towards its offline single player roots.
The original vision for LOTRO had me drooling. But Turbine's massively online story-has-already-been -written single-player experience is a total drag.
I tried LOTRO and hated it and won't touch mmos in the same category - eg. Stargate Worlds. And I'm an enormous LOTR and SG fan.

ADC was supposed to be an awesome game also before release, all games look good to fans of the game before release.. Stargate may be good or it may turn out to be a total pile of shit that makes AoC look like game of the year. Only time will tell.
Lotro is a good quality game with a good quality community and a Turbine is a good developer. Blizzard is a good developer also, they just aim for a different community is all. Funcom is a good example of how not to develop. Cheyenne is an unknown at this time, they could be another Cryptic and make a great niche game or they could suck worse than Funcom. Time will tell.
I would love to see more people play this game, but saying that I think the population is very healthy. I even have seen it increase since I started playing in Feb. I do a census on the US Brandywine server and have seen the avg player number go up dramatically and stay pretty steady. If you want to check it out it is here: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=142234
I did your same math and the results for Brandywine 08/09/08 9 PM EST are: 2600+ Chars + Anon/Monster Play/Session Play = 3250 Approx.

I tried it but the character models movement and animations were all off to me, just looked really nasty. I also wish'd it was more like WOW where it was the two factions against eachother but all they have is monster play which is lame. I mean in lord of the rings surely the bad side have lore too?
Well, no they don't. At least not when it comes to the actual books. The bad side is there to act as the conflict and catalyst for the good side.
There is no in depth info about Sauron in the books with the exception of the Silmarillion.
And as far as population, I'm on Brandywine and it's fine. OP, join a fellowship.
Actually I am on Brandywine and was in a few fellowships with my toons I think what people may be missing is that my last mmo before trying LOTRO was WoW and the best way to describe it is with instancing it was so difficult finding groups to run them that I skipped most of them which just shouldn't happen on the most populated server on a game, granted I don't spend a lot of time waiting for groups but to go from 1-48 without getting to see one instance is a bit extreme and with a few more players I doubt it would happen

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I personally would not want WoW players to over flood the game, it would destruy the community . I can already tell who is from wow just by /OOC chat and it is pretty annoying on Melendor. When I group with someone running there mouth about really stupid stuff like "gay" jokes and constantly being immature I ask if they are from WoW , and it has been 100% yes. I tell them this is not WoW and if you want to be able to find more groups it will be better to tone down you vocabulary. WoW can keep there players as far as I am concerned, the games population is perfect.
Look at the model closely. Look at the leggings , the detail is very impressive, the stitch workk on armors looks amazing and gives it a great amount of detail. Most players complaining about the models are stuck in the noob meduim and light armor look , but at higher levels the detail is just amazing, and if you play , you will be rewarded.
Oh I wouldn't want a flood of wow players just the good mature ones who are probably going through the motions with wow as I once was, in regard to character models I agree they could use some work I am not at all crazy about the female models but still I think with a few more people hence the opportunity to try out all there is to the game it could be a better experience
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Ive played in both servers and i can tell that there are ALOT more people playing on Europe servers than US if you dont believe me then test europe server trial and join Laurelin or Snowbour... alot of people and they are really nice not fcking WoW whiners or just some random kids
As far as Female models, I think they are gorgeous, and very pleasing , specially in dx 10, Does dx9 pick up all the details on the faces and the arms on the dwarfs and does dx9 make the Elven womens faces glow with purity ?
Actually, it has been noted that the DX10 upgrades were for shadows on landscapes specifically and not making changes to the models themselves
In so many words, they have made the landscape even prettier than it was. If that was possible (smile)
Now, if we match this to say, these female models, which is more "realistic"
I tried to find a more close up picture, but this was the best I had. But, even at a distance the detail is pretty well summed up here. The cheekbones, structure of armor, everything thanks to the shader 3.0 feature set really makes the AoC pic standout.
I wonder how AoC will look after DX10 kicks in.
I also hope LOTRO makes some major model revamps in MoM, as they are not as pleasing as some other games.
(EDIT: I mages from Picasa keep disappearing...hopefully they stay. Otherwise, here is the actual linkl

I would rather get fresh new players to the genre then tainted , jaded old ones. Blizzard has their fan base which they need to keep feed or they will spill into other games and make the game experience distorted...how many people out of 10 million actually role play in WoW ? It's blizzard fan base, not Turbine's, and Turbine would do better at drawing fresh fans. imho.
As far as Female models, I think they are gorgeous, and very pleasing , specially in dx 10,
Does dx9 pick up all the details on the faces and the arms on the dwarfs and does dx9 make the Elven womens faces glow with purity ? The above is a Human women , bu the Elves skin is pure and flawless , like elven women are supposed to be.
Each there own I guess. I personally have not seen better models in any game currently. I believe the walking animation is the only negative I have for them . The animations for the Minstrel's are spectacular , their one song that has the ghost swords fly around the enemy stabbing them for d.o.t. is just amazing,
Again the extra animations when you do the Conjunctions is pretty awesome.
Maybe I'm not seeing what some of you are seeing but I take great care in analyzing animations and models and even sent Turbine a diagram showing they where half a head off on the Human male models. all in all I think WoW players just aren't looking for this kind of detailed game experience , because of the taint that blizzard has left on their souls of instant gratification and easy mode game play.
You will say "but LotRO has easy mode game play" Of course it is easy mode, we haven't even passed through Moria , not even started out to the next resting place of the Fellowship which is Lorien, so yes, the game is at an easy point. I'm pretty confident when I say , by the time you reach the Black Gates you will have had some of the most engaging game play experience ever conceived in the genre. I truly feel a WoW play just is not ready for this kind of commitment in a game experience, imho.
If anything your reply helps me prove my point atleast in my case you take a game like LOTRO and you'd think there is more rp than wow but I playing on Brandywine have never ever seen anyone rp'ing unless you count assuming that because someone is "walking" as opposed to running as rp the bottom line for me is that there aren't enough people to really round out the experience and I met plenty of people in wow that never struck me as immature childish etc that would actually love this game and I would love to see them here.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Actually, it has been noted that the DX10 upgrades were for landscape shadows specifically and not making changes to the models themselves (Dropped the word "landscapes" in this sentence, why it seems off.)
I tried to find a more close up picture, but this was the best I had. But, even at a distance the detail is pretty well summed up here. Thats your opinion. Mine is different, but thanks for making those low resolution images available to us all, we can see how the game scales, which is something WoW players are used to.
Do you have a better close up image of the models? I have looked and found none, but if you can share any that are larger than 800x600 or 640x480, I would not mind seeing the "shader" changes to models. Myself, I would prefer to see a face though than have a "glow" blocking the view due to overbloom.
dx10, over bright (which makes the elveen face shine in the sun),bloom (.50) High resolution textures.
The highlighted part I just laughed out loud.. if you don't know why then maybe learn something about shader's and lighting lol.
Dropped the word landscape...fixed now, but I digress.
If you can show me models that look "better" in LOTRO, please do. But, the definition of character models are not as well done as say AoC's models.
But, I am always willing to see some proof that shows me otherwise.
Here is one I found, but it shows the "overbloom" I have spoken of.

You misunderstand - LOTRO looked like a piece of dung before release, and stunk just as bad when it hit the ground.
LOTRO was originally under development by a completely different bunch of people who had planned to make it into a completely different game to what we have today. Those plans were scrapped when Turbine took full control.
The original vision was for a more sandbox style game, where players had a great deal of freedom and control over the gameworld. Turbine's "follow-the-story-you-already-know-the-conclusion-to" game was a complete turn-around.
It's a regression towards single-player offline games, where you follow a line from point A to point B. That style of game design diminishes the potential of the multiplayer element.
Separating players into different versions of an area depending on where they are in the story? Poxy nasty peeeeeew.
That's why I don't think LOTRO will ever get anywhere near 1/4 of WoW's population and why I won't touch Stargate Worlds.
Originally posted by openedge1 I think the model upgrades and animation changes could be a good step toward LOTRO getting more players from other games. Hopefully in MoM.
Eh this is all a matter of opinion.. I thought the Vanguard and AoC pictures both looked horrible!
Didnt really like the Elf from the LotrO picture either.. (the face not the body)
however.. there are alot of animations in LotrO that look really wierd and I hope they work on them instead of models since they look fine to me!
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Ok...NOW we have a winner here. The two models on the left and right look awesome (I can see the guy in the middle is using the old models though)
Where are these people at...and I wonder when the player models can look like those (example: note how the beard is more detailed on the male on the left...and the middle one is shaped and unrealistic)
Fix the UI and add models like these and LOTRO could be awesome.

The bigger a game's population gets, the more immature players you will see. That is just the way it is. You have to take the good with the bad.

Solareus...is that dwarf pic using the hi-rez client. To me it doesn't look like it. The others do however.

I love the female models, they are my favorite to gaze upon in any mmorpg
All of the landscapes look awesome.
But, to say these are "lovely" females with their extra long faces and no definition to their facial structures...weird taste is all.
You made a comment on the launch models for VG
Are you saying this looks better than AoC? The bug eye thing just is too odd.
I think they look better than LOTRO, but not better than AoC's more realistic models.
(And that is even a low res, yet the facial details are incredible)
I think the model upgrades and animation changes could be a good step toward LOTRO getting more players from other games.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Ok...NOW we have a winner here. The two models on the left and right look awesome (I can see the guy in the middle is using the old models though)
Where are these people at...and I wonder when the player models can look like those (example: note how the beard is more detailed on the male on the left...and the middle one is shaped and unrealistic)
Fix the UI and add models like these and LOTRO could be awesome.
The two on the outsides are NPCs I think. The middle is a player.
