Item mall for Ryzom is ridicilous - everyone knows that.
When i said FREE PLAY - i mean Anarchy Online type. Perhaps you dont know how it works, so let me explain.
Anarchy online released 3 (or 4) expansion packs. Basic anarchy Online is free. Everything included in expansions is off limit. This means
1.You can level to half of possible level
2.There are places you can not go to
3.Some skills and game functionalities are off limit.
4.Paying players get perks (cosmetic , voices ... etc)
So the game works perfectly normal for free player (or froob) they can play , they can CONTRIBUTE and group with paying players. They PARTICIPATE in economy. And make game POPULATED and game world not empty and FLOWING
When player feels he loves the game and wants to play seriously , he takes subscription model.
Easy , good, simple
And it made Anarchy online profitable again (they made 2 expansions since going free)
I dont see why it would be such blight on Ryzom...or perhaps you guys love playing emptyish game

I know exactly how it works, I played the free base game then I puchased the expansions, which means I subscribed. Maybe you don't realize that ryzom is not an empty game. It was never really empty. Nexrax overextended themselves, and GF did not go bankrupt because of Ryzom. Their whole darn company went backrupt.
Ryzom *does* have a very long, and packed , and free trial area...I know you want a free game. There are several out there. So, go get em!

Outdated?
Is AoC outdated?
I do not see AoC chars breathing. Ryzom mobs look and act much more lifelike than what I saw in AoC.
Ryzom was designed for much more computer than what was available when it first came out. I do not think anyone could come close to using full graphic settings back then.
I thought I'ld do a little review as I have access to both Ryzom and AoC now and have multiply comps so was able to log on both games at the same time.
AoC does have more detail in graphics, more bits and pologons in chars, mobs, landscape, buildings. So Ryzom could use a bit of graphical upgrade here. But is it as much a difference as I would expect to see over 4 years -- nope more like maybe 2 years.
However moving around in the game has pretty much the same feel as far as the landscape goes. And Ryzom has wind effects on vegitation which gives some feel of realism. Granted if you just stare at it, it is repetitive but if you are concentrating on other things like mobs, it adds to the realism of Ryzom. AoC really has a stick world effect here.
Smoke effects are pretty much the same in both games -- very good.
Water flow in AoC is better with better waterfalls, but even AoCs waterfalls do not deliver a real waterfall look. Flowing and still water in Aoc is very nice. In Ryzom I can not think of much flowing water, mostly just still water in lakes/ponds. The still water in Ryzom has a very nice lifelike feel to it with gentle ripples and swimming looks and feels nice. Fish will occassionally swim out of the water and into the air for a bit from what I remember too but never bothered me.
NPC, char, and mob movement in both games are both very good with all appearing more lifelike than stick.
Combat and death animations are both very good and not much different.
Atmospheric effects are much the same in quality but Ryzom does excel at this for feel after all Atys is a living planet and the atmospheric effects do give this feel.
Neither game is terrific at far landscape images -- images at the edge of view beyond say 250m. I've seen both Ryzom and AoC mountain ranges seem to jump up and down while moving my view from right to left. Ryzom usually just obscures the distance with fog, but the canopy in the sky always looks nice but there's never that much of it on the screen to push video cards.
Mob and herd AI is just much better and lifelike in Ryzom than AoC, however I do have to say AoC seems to have some here too.
Overall, if you want just pixels and polygons, Ryzom is a little dated compared to AoC. Other than that Ryzom has much the same lifelike feel overall and even some features which are more lifelike than AoC.
All of this of course, IMHO being a huge Ryzom fan.

I've disagreed with a lot of what Lobo has said in this thread, but I think what you've said here is unfair. At least as at the post you've quoted, he's very clearly not just after a free game to play.
I started mmo'ing on Anarchy Online and have been back a couple of times over the years.
The time I first stopped playing, numbers were dropping.
On my first return, numbers were so low that it felt ghost-townish. There was no real point in playing and I only stayed for two days.
My third visit was after they introduced their freebie deal - and the place was packed and alive. It had an enormous impact on the game and may have been what seeded the idea for Ryzom's existing free-to-play element on Silan.
You're right - Silan never lacked for players when I was there. It was pretty busy.
But that's irrelevant. What matters is how many of those free-trial'ers subscribe. And my experience as a Ryzom noob was that it seemed like only a small percentage of those free-trialers subscribed and ended up on the mainland.
That is a problem.
There have been other discussions on these forums about why this is so. One thing that most people agree on is that while Silan is pretty good, and a vast improvement on the old noob areas, it could do more to showcase Ryzom's better features.

Very well written imho.
About Ai of mobs in AoC, well i have seen very little interaction, always ending pretty fast due to the difference in strength (lol, wolves that kill small rabbits in one hit), nothing comparable to the herd movements and long fights of the carnivores vs herbivores in Ryzom. And sometimes even herbs can kill the nasty carnivore.
AoC has a good environment, good realism but totally wasted by the severe instancing of the game.
The weather/season cycles of Ryzom are still unmatched by other mmos and Atys feels more an 'alien' planet (and it is, being it a plant), magical and mysterious.
In my opinion, the best way to get people in would be to go to a $10 or $12 (preferably $10) per month sub instead of $15. That is, if the game could be run on that. Give the option for players to donate further, but keeping the same subscription price as WoW and other premier MMOs on the market is a recipe for failure.
Just want to talk about a few misconceptions and plain lies here :
- 1st of all, as of now, everyone with an old account ( trial or regular ) can download the new client and play the game, and currently for free ( sortoff an open beta test )
- Secondly, the newbie island has many players currently playing in it, and feels very alive.
- Trial accounts can now experience the mainlan and have no cap anymore, so they are basically the same as regular accounts
- What I think will happen is that after the "open beta" ends, and everything is woking as desired, people will have to start paying again. ( honestly I could play without ANY issues at all, it's a blast really ) And Trial accounts will get limited again.
- Item mall in this game? Thats hilarious, item malls and ryzom are 100% incompatible, anyone suggesting this has no clue.
- This game is not tailored towards F2P, it has to be a P2P game or it may as well shut down ( I don't want that to happen, cause it is indeed a gem of a game )
- Seeing that there are loads of people waiting on a new sandbox and as there is no competition out there , Ryzom is VERY viable. To ellaborate on this further, there are the thousands of SWG pre-cu NGE vets that could find a home here. There are thousands of players waiting on Darkfall ( will it ever release? ), there are many players waiting on Earthrise and Fallen Earth. All of this while Ryzom is here, has awesome features and has a solid base to expand upon. The engine is great, I mean it looks good and plays smooth on a geforce 4, what more do you need? Plus imho the interface is easy to master and customizable enough to fit most tastes. For new players there are no apparent flaws.
Ryzom only needs advertising, once "open beta" is over and the new owner gets settled, and they allow new accounts again, the game has big potential.
- Obviously there should be a plan for the future too. It should follow in EvE Online's footsteps, using as less servers as possible, allowing anyone to play on any servers ( regardless of language and region ), as it is currently, perhaps server mergers are needed. They should start thinking about an expansion too, to put the game back on the radar. But ALL expansions should be free ( included in the sub ), like EvE online. This allows for a very horizontal expansion. Lastly ofcourse they should announce a roadmap, not only for the expansion, but also for fixing bugs and completing old features.
