Tbh you don't know why the game wasn't as good as it should have been unless you were there because you can't just take one angry ex developer's word for it. It's all well and good saying the game woulda been great if it didn't have the changes to it but the game is like a baby to this developer and they're blinded by that and wont accept someone bad mouthing it. So really the changes were probably made for a reason in that the original game just wasn't that good. AOC isn't a bad game and I would rather play it over many mmorpgs but for me the zonging and the directional combat kill it.
FC is well known to "exploit" their employees. That said, Norwegian laws is more strict than those in the states or GB. As I understand it from x-employees is that it's a good environment for gamers (you can play games during workours etc). This article for a couple of years ago confirm that you don't get paid for overtime.
Almost every company exploits there workers thats unfortuantly the world we live in.

Yeah, that excuses Funcom. WHat were we ever thinking.
Well MrBloodworth your friends at forums.f13.net/ seem to disagree, they moved Age of Conan from the 'MMOG Discussion' section to 'The Gaming Graveyard'. forums.f13.net/index.php
The problems I have with many of these "visionaries" is not only the fact that most of their visions are rather dull and uninspired, but the fact that they aren't flexible in accepting that their dream might not coincide with the theme of the game.
As arrogant as this may sound, I feel I could do a better job than McQuaid or Godager ever could.
People constantly, CONSTANTLY reference mis-management in this industry these days. I think a lot of these problems come from the fact that the person on the top has little-to-no concern nor understanding of what their staff wants/needs, and sadly doesn't care either.
For me personally, Age of Conan is officially dead. Typically, I like to re-visit games after 3 months or so, in hopes that whatever problem drove me away from the game initially will have been fixed by then. However, seeing this parade of failure, and down multiple venues (anywhere from the gem issue, to forum censoring, to totally incompetent GM's in and out of the game) has proven to me that Funcom not only lacks the awareness to fix the problems with this game... but sadly, they lack the talent as well.
That's the true tragedy here.
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...
In what capacity, I must know, I was a 5+ year AO Vet, I want the inside dirt !!!!!
Officially: Lore Master, Quest Designer.
Unofficially: Loud, Disruptive American Who was a Target for Middle-Management Hostility.
(And years back, for AO, I did the in-game "Huge-Map". And yes, I still absolutely adore leets! )
No lie... Leets are, still, to this day... one of the single coolest creatures I've ever seen in a game. Seeing some little furry thing come wadling up to me and go "Dewd..." "Gimme ur credz" for the first time pretty much set the tone for me... Then of course, seeing people running around with pillows, or an Atrox wearing a dress...
My in-game character had a leet doll they carried everywhere. A Nano Mage MP, in all black.. with three meatballs in tow, and a leet doll in hand... ready to f stuff up...
A sight to behold indeed...
Good times .

"Gaute had to follow his vision and throw alot of work away," Key words bolded/Italicized for context... Anyone else think the word "vision" should be banned from any MMO developer's vocabulary? Not the first time someone's "vision" has resulted in a train-wreck.
And "potential" ?
Heres another word that has a big "dangar" sign around.
lol... True and so...
"potential" can go so many ways...

Whatever about if this is true or not. Who cares. All it is is pushing the blame to someone else so the rest of them dont look bad. I mean its not going to change anything people aren't going to play the game because "it was a really good game a year ago" seriously the game is just Age of Crap and if this isn't true we will still hate funcom and AoC. If people are just looking to blame others whats going to happen...nothing maybe they will fire the guy but how does that fix the crap game. If it took them a year to commit to these changes according to the post then it will probably take them a year to fix everything maybe even longer because the thing is already out. And can funcom afford to commit to these changes to fix the game to what it was a year ago, probably not because I don't think they can afford to do something like that.

No way to know if it the comment is true or not, whats relevant is whether or not his story is accurare, even if he made it up. Based on what I've seen from FC dev over time and what they produced I'm inclined to think its true. If its made up then the truth is something likely very similar.

1. At one point near launch if you put in a petition the auto-reply invited you to check the website for self-help. The web site it gave was for Anarchy Online. A big lol at first but very worrisome when you thought about it.
2. Fact is once they decided to dev the game for xbox in the middle of the dev process they caused themselves all kinds of problems. There is a video of an FC dev saying the combat was designed how console/controller players in mind. Think about that. They didn't just add xbox360 compatibility to their already existing project, they re-designed major aspects of the game from that point. Is it any wonder AoC is what it is?

How does this "great graphics" canard keep getting repeated?
The graphics in this game SUCK. They don't just suck a little, they suck a LOT.
They used every shade of brown ever known to man. There must be 16 million different shades of brown in this game.
And armor? Forget AO's cool armor. In AoC we get brown sacks and aluminum foil weapons.
Yay... flowing grass. Who cares? Everything that matters in the game looks like crap (character models, mobs, armor, and weapons).
Stop repeating this "stellar graphics" lie because AoC's looks like trash. Even the dev distributed screenshots look putrescent.
