WOW sub numbers may be in deep trouble

woody1974woody1974 Member Posts: 257

I got a chance to play the weekend preview of WAR and so far I am very very impressed with this game. I thought for sure this game was gonna suck, but I was wrong. This game is still in BETA and everything ran smoothly, not even a hint of lag, for me anyways and it was fun, the graphics aren't 1/2 bad, pretty much like WOW graphics, but maybe a notch or 2 better.

The combat system pretty much mirrors that of WOW and the PVP definately outdoes WOW in many aspects, but mainly for me it was about the balance in PVP and there was definately balance and it was fun.

I payed close attention to chat and what others were saying and I can't even remember seeing 1 bad comment about this game.

Im not going to call this a WOW killer, not yet anyways, but it is off to a very very good start and I think it will def snatch up some subs from many of the other mmo's.

the game is unfinshed, terrible mob pathing, awkward combat, at least 6 months away from being in good shape

game is still in beta so yes it is unfinished.  terrible mob pathing never saw.  no it is not 6 months

awasy from being in good shape.  combat is a little slow.  awkward not hardly.  blows WoW out of

    the water.

People have been saying WoW's sub numbers are in trouble since DAY ONE.   Actually no, since before beta, people exactly like the OP have been saying that WoW is doomed to imminent failure.

We heard it with Age of Conan (lol),  Tabula Rasa (rofl),  LOTRO (lmao), Vanguard... (roflmao),  and god knows how many other times with so many other hyped of pieces garbage.  Even Vanguard beta testers in the god awful state that game was in, told us their game was going to be amazing.

Do you know what WAR is?  It isn't a game, not until it's released.  Right now, it's a marketing campaign and until the game is release you cannot possibly hope to speculate that it will cause WoW to be in "deep trouble".  How many times have we heard this and seen it not to be true?

How many times does this need to happen?  Do you want me to tell you what's really going to happen this year?  WOTLK is going to break sales records, again, it's going to get huge positive reviews.. again... and WAR?   WAR is going to be another in a long list of failures.

WAR is an instanced piece of hyped up crap.  Its not even going to scratch WoW.  Nothing can possibly touch it, and you can quote me here and in 6 months time when all is said and done, you can point out this post to me and show me how wrong I was.  But that's not going to happen.

All of you people clinging onto the hope that WAR will save you from the big bad evil Blizzard are in for huge dissapointment, and you will join the legion of disgruntled MMORPG hopefulls while the vast majority of the online gaming community are having a blast in WOTLK.

    Not... a.... scratch.

You don't need to align yourself with Blizzard to know this is going to happen, it's simple maths.   Review scores (both online and magazine),  Advertising dollars,  sheer number of people playing will ensure success no matter what.   And personally, I put my faith into Blizzard delivering a quality product than any of these pretenders to the throne.

Now if you can give me reasonable arguments to the contrary instead of calling me a blind fanboy I'll be happy to debate the issue, my experience of the huge anti-WoW community on these forums leads me to suspect otherwise.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

You don't have to be a fanboy to realise it's going to take some doing to take down WoW. I wish people would stop setting themselves up for a fall by declaring <insert game here> is going to topple WoW from its throne. All you end up doing is make yourself look foolish when your nice warm slice of humble pie arrives. Call me a cynic but I'd much rather wait until a few weeks post-release before I jump in. AoC was the first and last time I fall for hype and fanboy rantings and buy on the release day.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I would love to see WoW take a major sub number hit because of WAR. I tried WoW and couldn't believe how lame it was. I thought 9 million people couldn't be all wrong. Unfortunately I didn't realize that it was 9 million (*) who play that game. WoW is a boring grindfest, nothing more, the PvP is a joke.

However WoW will not take a major sub hit (imo). It may lose a few players to WAR but not enough to cause them any headaches.  I think WAR will be very successful and probably even take the no. 2 spot. But it is a different game and caters to a different crowd.

    { Mod Edit }

(*).. apparently the mods didn't think my comment about the limited mental capacity of WoW players was appropriate.

Im not a wow hater I just cant play their game since their game started having problems with my 8800gt so I am left with other games WAR being the one that I pray will be alright.

WAR is not a WOW killer WAR is WAR and WOW is WOW.  However those who truly like to pvp maybe swayed by a more pvp centric game.

Last I checked I thought it was Maple Story that has over 80million subscribers. It just shows that games aimed add kids all surpass 10mill ;)

    LOL.

no, just no. please stop saying things like 'at least 6 months away from being in good shape' if you haven't played in beta ;)

combat is excellent... goes back to old school style, which is GREAT. Yes, bad mob pathing, but this is being fixed within this next week.

WAR will very much be ready to ship come the 18th... much readier than WoW was when it first came out ;)

Will play: not WAR, HELLO KITTY ONLINE!!11one

I don't know if War will be enough to steal away a sufficient amount of Wow subscribers...it is to be determined. However, it is probably the only MMO I can think of that will be polished enough to truly go against wow if it turns out well. It definitely has some interesting features that wow lacks, but I will say that having the millions of people does create more people/more activity.

With that said, I will definitely be trying war but no idea what to expect there.

Also, Beta subscriptions for WAR FAR out rank the subs there were for WoW when it was in beta.

Id also like to point out that it doesnt even matter if this isnt a wow killer. We all know that WoW is like halo 3 - people still play it, even though its ****. Its almost like a popculture.

WAR will have plenty of full servers (30k full of preorders in beta over the weeked =) ), so frankly, WoW bois can stick to their 3 arenas and 4 year old BGs ;)

I really do not understand some of you. Why is it that so many people want war to be the wow killer..... for one i think war looks like a pos.  If you don't like wow then stop talking about it and play another game. Also if swg is still going after all the subs they lost im sure that wow will be here for awhile to.

I really couldn't care less about wow's subscriber base. I just hope WAR will be a fun game. Otherwise, WotLK isn't that far off.

You don't think that it could possibly be because... WoW brought in an insane amount of new people to the MMORPG scene that didn't even know what an MMORPG was when WoW was in beta??? hmmm. Maybe thats why WAR has more beta subscriptions...

How do you know WAR will have full servers? AoC had more pre-orders and beta sign up then WAR did, look how that turned out.

Honestly you "The sky is falling on WoW" people really need to take a break. I'm sure Hello Kitty online will be a WoW killer too...

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

WOW has nothing to worry about. WAR and WOW are two completely different games. WOW has better game play and PVP with the concentration mainly to PVE, while WAR has RVR and a forced cooperation standard. WAR is very linear and you progress like everyone else on the same path. With only the RVR aspect of the game being the only content driving force, can in all honesty drive people away from it over a short period of time.

I will bet you that WAR does not get the numbers WOW has and WOW will still be the top MMORPG because of it's success and polish vs WAR and it's linear forced cooperation style game play. I beta tested WOW and soon after release the game was perfectly polished on day one. The only downside was the lack of servers and server stability because they mis-judged the amount of popularity the game was going to have at launch.

Who let you in the VIP section?

Wow it took you  8 paragraphs to reply to a post, you get a golf clap for that. The only reason people play WOW is because they can run it on a commodore64 system. The PVP is horrible it has been the same battlegrounds for the past 3+ years, almost every pre-burning crusade zone is a ghost town, even the NPC's are requesting to be moved out of Stormwind and Orgimaar. Seriously the game is going to take a big hit in sub numbers, and sorry to burst your fanbois bubble but there is no proof of 9 or even 10 million subs, other than what you read on the internet and if you believe that, then I have an island off the coast of Florida I want to sell you for $20.

WOW is on it's last leg and I have played the wotlk beta and it really sux, it doesn't offer anything new, in fact it is more of the same. people will get their 10 lvls in less than a week and it will be back to the same pvp battlegrounds and back to waiting another 3 years, the same thing EQ did.

Q-bert has better content than WOW does. I am playing  WAR beta weekend and I can tell you 1st hand that it is running smoother in BETA than WOW did at release, the pvp is better and the more important thing is it is balanced and the classes are balanced unlike in WOW where every class is a Tank.

Wow is not invincible, nor is it a POS. Neither is War. War has a lot of potential because there are a ton of people who used to play DAOC who got turned off when the game went to crap. However, there is a reason people have given up on Blizz: It's a very well disguised grind. For a while you get away from that, and then youj get back to that. At some point, that grind is exactly what burns people out. All games need to be some form of a well disguised grind, but it's a question of how they do it.

In War, they have an equivalent to AV but tonsofo them. Not just differetn level AV's. This will be a big competition (:think of how much fun AV was back in the day, befoer it became a stupid rush - everyone loved it)

Now the same gamecompany  which had a huge userbase (note: before blizzard's time with wow), is coming out with another MMO that is promising an improvement off the same premise? Well, that has a lot of potential. Plus a lot of old DAOC folks will go back just to try War for that reason.

Blizz has some special things it does well: the game runs fantastic even on crappy machines. They try to do that with all their games. It is TBD whether War will be applying that philosophy or not.

For anyone to act like they can predict the situation with War vs Wow in advance is at best, ignorant and at least, asinine. However, the fact that opinions are so divisive does mean the game may have drummed up a pretty large amount of interest which doesn't reflect on negative or positive amounts of subscribers.

War vs Wow is like AMD/ATI vs Intel/Nvidia. That alone signifies a lot of potential competition but tells you NOTHING until both games are out.

Warhammer is very heavy on pvp.. that right there will limit it's appeal.  Daoc was far superior to Everquest in most ways, but it never had more than half the subs EQ did (back in the day).

Also you have to remember the Warhammer is not a household name.  Wow has had Toyota commercials and a Southpark episode

My guess   1 million box sales and 500k subscribers 3 months after launch

Nice flame-magnet title to the post but seriously, i thought you could have done much better than

"pretty much like WoW, but a notch better" and

Balance? lol you already have people crying that the ironbreaker/runepriest combo is unstoppable. Good job comparing an unfinished product with one thats been out for 4 years. If its people like you that leave WoW, then i think that drop in sup numbers is a very good thing.

You don't understand.  Your post is the newest incarnation of a post I've seen hundreds of times over the years.   What you are saying here, about WAR, is what people have been saying about every MMORPG release since 2004.

I've heard "WoW is on it's last legs" since 2005.

And it's still kicking the crap out of everything.

WAR is pure hype.  It's the next Hellgate London / Vanguard / AoC / Tabula Rasa / LOTRO/

What honestly makes you think that this time it's going to happen?

WAR is coming..  Then it's going away, very quietly.

Who are you trying to kid, WOW has been out 4 years and it is still broken and still has major class balance issues, pvp battlegrounds are still boring and unbalanced. out of 9 or 10 million subs in WOW I bet over 2 or 4 million of them are chinese gold farmers accounts, so all the hype of how many subs WOW has is a bunch of bs.

WAR is 10 steps ahead in beta what WOW was at release.. So just keep on playing an old dying game like WOW and I will be enjoying a much better mmo. Make sure you go purchase Wrath Of The Lion King and get your 10 lvls and sit around another 3 years

Yes, it is old and dying and they are losing subs that is why they implemented the "Recruit a Friend program" because no one wants to play it anymore. Stormwind and Orgimaar should be called Desolace....desperate times calls for desperate measures...

Who are you to speak for the masses Woody?  As if you have an unbiased clue to begin with.

This isn't the first time you have run your mouth about how bad WoW is and now "everyone" is leaving and the game is on its death bed now?   No proof there is anywhere close to 10 million subs, but you suspect there are 2 million gold farmers?

WoW has been in the top ten selling games list for 4 years straight.  There are around 500 US/EU servers.  Each server supports around 10,000 accounts (2,000 live prime time average).  You be a big boy and do that math and tell me how it adds up.

Get over yourself.  Warhammer will do alright and I hope it finally breaks the mold of shit games that get released on consumers, but I am not holding my breath.  Mythic is an ok game company, but the often shoot themselves in the foot with nerfing and bad PvE content.

Calm down buddy. WoW never got its 10 mil subs in the year it came out. It grew over time. If it was broken then people would have stopped playing it, and the numbers would have fallen in the second year but guess what, it didnt. And as for chinese farmers, i could say the same thing about WAR, that 200k of the 800k proposed subscribers will be gold farmers. And why the hell not? if this really is the next big thing, you really think they'll stay away from it? But lets not go there.

Never PvPd to the point where it actually affected me but yea its very unbalanced (Warlocks will never be nerfed =() But WoW was never ment to be a PvP game. The only reason i stayed in for 4 years was beacuse of the friends i made and the great times we had as a guild.

I stopped playing WoW about 2 months ago. Was in a semi casual guild and alot of people left for the summer and i really wanted to finish Oblivion =.=.

I have beta tested WAR before the preview and seen alot more than you have. Is it good? you bet. Do i give a damn if it dethrones WoW? Hell no. The game has its issues, The constant crashes to desktop were really annoying as were the UI and collision issues but its a beta so its acceptable. Still think their launching it way too early, and the open beta should have lasted a little longer but w/e.

We will be closely watching how WAR turns out and theres a good chance that my entire guild will shift to WAR. With 54 of us leaving that would (ironically) be a big hit to their sub numbers. But am i running around like an idiotic doomsayer?

WAR has the makings of a great game and you don't need to put WoW down to make it look good. But hey, dont let me stop you. Vent out your frustration. iam sure the AoC fanboys will be very proud of you.

But what happens in 2 weeks when everyone is 40? What happens after 2 more months of RvR? Do people get tired of it the game seems so shallow to me even the producer wants to rush people to cap lvl to pvp.  Even the most hardcore PvPers want to do other things besides PvP dont they?>

Not flaming honest questions here folks
