you people kill me? 5 months and your finally bored? thats an excellent game if it can hold you for five months. now because the game doesn't make you wanna play everyday you come to these forums and give it a sorry review.
If this is truly how people feel about MMOs now, then it's a sad case for the genre.
MMOs have always been about a long-lasting experience. Hell, they evolved from pen-and-paper table-top RPGs, where getting to level 20 could take months... and that was fine... because getting to level 20 wasn't the main goal, nor was "racing to end game to raid for all the uber gear".
Becoming immersed and exploring the world, developing your character every step of the way, hanging out and having fun with other players was the main draw.
In that context, 5 months is *not* a long time to be playing one and if that's the extent of enjoyment that newer ones are truly capable of providing, then... again... that's sad.
I guess that's what you get when people demand faster progress, more rewards, and a focus that's almost entirely on end-game...
When compared to the older MMOs, which were slower-paced, not all about "racing to end-game" and more about enjoying the journey... there are people still playing and enjoying those games 5+ *years* after they started.
I know people who started playing a game like Anarchy Online, for example, at launch.. They stuck it through even with the bad launch and such and are still playing and enjoying it to this day. Others are playing FFXI since the day it launched in the US - over 4 years ago - and are still having a great time.
Why? Because the games aren't set up to be raced through in a 2 month period. The content is slower, the progress is slower.. but for those who can get into the spirit of it, they're a hell of a lot of fun.
And, contrary to popular belief, you don't have to give up your life to make progress in them... unless you choose to. Those who claim you do are those who felt *they* had to in order to proceed at the rate *they* felt they "had to". And, in my experience, those people generally only measure progress in "how many levels did I get today?"
But anyway.. Yeah.
Games designed to allow, or even promote, faster progression lead to players burning out on them many times faster than those designed around a slower, more lasting experience. Gee... who couldn't see that coming?

Well at least you got a good 5 months out of it before it got old to you. Public quests are very innovative and are a very socialized factor to the gameplay. If nothing else it gets you involved with other players. Also I haven't spent one minute RvR'ing in the game without having a small organized group and we worked together, had fun, and dominated the playing field and objectives. It was an extremely social experience. I found that those that wanted a 'single serving game' experience could have it, but were easily beaten in RvR. It is good for a game to offer this, but there are social experiences everywhere if you look for them. There has never been an MMO that is this much fun and action packed from the start. There is not another MMO where I can roll up 4 characters in the course of 20 hours and be having an insanely fun time with all 4 of them. Normally I would have to invest at least 50 hours per character if not hundreds to even get close to this level of entertainment. (My opinion) I agree there is a lot in common with other MMO's but that is how the World works. Things migrate or change slowly they don't just pop up out of the blue with some new and innovative design. It's a shame because those that do are truly revolutionary. I agree that WAR isn't revolutionary but it doesn't have to be to be fun. I can't wait for a revolutionary MMO to come out with a huge budget, low bugs, and a honest dev team but that is the type of thing that happens once or twice in a decade. We have to work with what we have. Most MMO players life span in a game is less than 5 months so I would say that this game does something right if it kept you interested for that long. I wonder if you would have started your 5 months at release instead of in a beta build how long you would have lasted. Anyways, thanks for the review.
I like to think of the social aspect to WAR as being very single-serving. You communicate with your group/party just enough to succeed in whatever it is you're all trying to accomplish.
Like in other games, I'm sure we've all grouped with other players to do an instance, but how often do you end up making a personal friend through that experience? In my case, not very often; they're just another body to deal and take damage.
I think the core problem lies in the lack of emotional attachment; when a game is too easy, or not challenging enough there is very little critical thinking required in whatever the group/party/team is trying to accomplish. Thus, players rarely end up bonding with one another, because it's just another task that they will likely do again; the special factor is gone.
Yeah man I know exactly what you mean. I played FFXI for like 3 years and I never made online friends like I did in that game. The problem is i'm married now with a little girl on the way and don't have time to invest in something like that. That makes this game work so well for me. I think it would be hard to pull that element into a casual type game like this one. Many games are going to be going the casual route due to the larger audience they can pull in, but to take that and make it have a social aspect like what you are talking about could be really hard. I would love if someone figured it out.
For now though, I have made some good friends in the beta. More often than not people are single serving like you say, but I have found that over time when I play the same times of the day and stuff like that I run into the same people often and I can make some friends.
In WoW I had trouble making any friends as so many people could care less about helping anyone out over their own advancement. I have found in WAR though, that people are much more likely to unite and bond in RvR than anything I experienced in WoW. I am just using WoW because it is like the other extreme when compared to FFXI.
Honestly though, on Order I have found way more people willing to work together and be social while on destruction it is much tougher. That is why I changed to rolling Order classes. Maybe at launch it will change though.
... Also have you checked out Ryzom? It is the exact opposite of single serving. Amazing community over there and I plan on playing as long as I can. I just need more PVP entertainment.
I have played a good bit of Saga of Ryzom, but it was short-lived, though i have read that it's back up and online now.
What an excellent post by the OP, I have posted before, you can only do so much with a PvP game, it gets BORING and REPITIOUS after a few months, War will be a short term success and it will have its War followers who will continue to play, but the rest of the gamers, we always seek something different, a good mix of PvE and PvP, and it looks like War will not deliver in that department.
you people kill me? 5 months and your finally bored? thats an excellent game if it can hold you for five months. now because the game doesn't make you wanna play everyday you come to these forums and give it a sorry review. hell id get bored of a new girlfried after 5 months. i would get bored of anything after five months if i messed with it everyday. this post is utter garbage. the game is great. did you feel this way about WAR after your first 30 days? YOU DONT DESERVE TO BE A BETA TESTER!
If you cant find an MMO to keep you entertained for 5 months then the game is a failure.
sorry but i have a life, a wife, and kids. i nevered plyed and mmo for more than half a year before i got bored. i cant do the same grind for yeasr. i usually paly the next latest and greatest after a half of year. maybe thats why you guys have higher expectation, you spend 2 or 3 years playing something, your gonna want the next game that comes out to be the same because thats what your use to.
Gah! That is *such* an urban myth.
Having a wife and kids...or a career.. or anything else... does not prevent you from enjoying a game as long as you want to enjoy it.
Friend of mine has had a full-time job, a wife and a child for as long as he's been playing FFXI - since it launched over 4 years ago - he's still playing and still enjoying himself.
He doesn't shirk his responsibilities to do so... He plays at night when they're in bed, or otherwise, when they're out and he has nothing else to do around the house.
And he's only *one* of *many* people I know in that situation - some have multiple children and still can find the time to play and enjoy themselves.
It's called prioritizing and having realistic expectations for the amount of time you have to play.
Which seems to be another common problem... This weird sense of entitlement that some have. People feel if they have only 5 hours a week to play because of "real life', that they should still be able to keep pace with those who have 25 hours to play. It simply doesn't work that way. You ("you" in general) are not special, nor more entitled than anyone else, because you have a busier life than someone else may have.
I'm just so sick of "well I have a life" or "I don't live in my mother's basement" being thrown around.
And the whole "grind for several years" thing can boil down to one of two things, generally:
1. It's a grind because the game simply doesn't provide enough variety or depth of content to keep the player entertained - something certainly fair to say of many MMOs nowadays
2. It's a grind because that's how the player treats it - spending all their time doing nothing but leveling, even though there's myriad other things to do.
I see the latter example all the time in FFXI's forums. "FFXI is nothing but a level grind." Well, anyone who's played the game for any amount of time and gotten involved with some of the other activities it offers will tell you it's *far* more than that. There's almost *too* much to do in FFXI. Why do they feel it's a level grind and nothing more? Well... guess what they spend 90% of their time doing? I'll give you three guesses and the first 2 don't count.

I've noticed that a lot of MMOs have similar gameplay, and really I have no problem with it. It seems inherent, and the gameplay that they share makes sense to me. So the next big change isn't all that important to me, the tiny innovations are cool, but even then, meh, I could do without them. I've only been playing MMOs since WoW (branched out from there), so maybe it's because I'm less of a veteran to them that I don't mind the similarities. As far as the social aspect, I put it on myself to make friends with good people, not the game. If the game itself is prohibitive to making friends and it's an MMO, then it's got an obvious problem... But that doesn't seem to be the case here so much as running into lamer players. What I would like to ask of people who have experience with the game is whether or not it's a different atmosphere. I know it's physically a different setting, but does the world itself feel different or new? That is what I play different MMOs for. I love to explore a new world. If only I was born a few hundred years ago or into the future, so I could explore foreign countries or stars =(. I'm glad to see a reasonable review, though. Not many of them =D.
this is not a reasonable review, it is a guy who played the game for five months and got bored with it. i hardly call that a review. a review would state some of the good aspects that made him play for five months. most people can't even play conan for 30 days, five months seem like there was some enjoyment keeping him there.
Medafor, the primary reason why i spent 5 months on the game was because i felt entitled to helping Mythic provide a better experience. When you apply to beta test a game and get in, it's not a joy ride or about getting to play for free, it's about providing quality feedback to the developers so that they might make a better game.
Socially works like daoc. Though i will say if you play enough and aat least rvr. People will get to know you. On both sides if your good. Not sure what your seeking as personal hook ups? You want a love chat room? Im also an elder beta tester and while i socialize all the time. I like chatting. I do see how guilds will have difficultys keeping people. Other than standard bearers and if your guild runs guild only tactics . People may use guilds to get to 40 then ditch. I still find the game fun though. Im more into pvp over pve though. Infact i was so happy to find a game that i can lvl faster pvping than a pver. Also the different types of pvp add to the fun.
All in all if your a carebear then dont get the game. DDO everquest 2 and LOTRO are better for you. If you want a pvp nation battle game then it may fit for you.
sorry but i have a life, a wife, and kids. i nevered plyed and mmo for more than half a year before i got bored. i cant do the same grind for yeasr. i usually paly the next latest and greatest after a half of year. maybe thats why you guys have higher expectation, you spend 2 or 3 years playing something, your gonna want the next game that comes out to be the same because thats what your use to.
You have a wife and children? Your immature writing suggests otherwise....
Anyway... This was a very honest and well laid out review which I appreciate.
I'm also Beta testing and I have come to a similar conclusion.
So how do you think the game will go for the millions of people whose first game was WOW? Myself I played Guild Wars for 18 months, Tabula Rasa for 9 months. WOW for 20 minutes.
Looks like you have a trend for playing inferior games.

. im immature bacause i can't hold attention to one game for too long, ok. sorry we all have different taste. different opinions. it's a forum don't take it personal. my writings have nothing to do with my family. what is that all about? did oi say something to upset you. am i a WAR fanboy or something. or does it make you feel big about yourself?

No, you are immature by the way you handled your response to this thread. Your writing makes you seem like you have barely hit puberty.....wife and kids? yeah right.

good, it's obviusly got you in an uproar. lol. anyway if you read his "review" it's all about how he got bored and now it's like every mmo he got bored with in the past. that is not a review. its a person who played a game for some time, got bored, and wrote about it. how bored he is with the game. does not highlight any aspects of the game. and you come and cheer him on because you fall into the same category, i dont care how mature it sounds to you. but thats all this thread is about.

Good, now I got you to admit you are trolling, you have no credibility on this subject. Next.
WAR fanbois can't stand the fact that this game is not that great. You're all just making excuses because you expected the NDA lift to be all rainbow and fairie posts of "OMG THIS GAME IS GOOD." It's not. Get over it. These forums aren't just for WAR praise so you can all pretend the game is more than it is. These forums are here for any one that is going to talk about WAR or anything related to WAR. Try getting over that too.
At least your name is oh-so-creative. WoW fanbois can't stand the fact that WAR is a good game, even if it's not revolutionary. And no one (who is credible) has said it's perfect. You know what's more important? I've seen former trolls, even people who were on the fence, come over to the "fanboi" side and say that they're pleasantly surprised. Yes, some "fanbois" have also said it failed to meet expectations, but it's an MMO. It can't please everybody.

nobody is backing anyone up. i think it's the fact you trolls have been in this forum all day saying how horrible the game is, YET YOU ARE STILL IN THESE FORUMS AT 12:00 at night EST. still posting. i don't see how you cannot like the game you been hanging out in the WAR forums all day like a fanboy. are you lying to yourselves or something? and im immature. at least i like the game, i have a reason to be here.

Hah, you say that as if personal preference is a justification for the amount of people that don't think the game is good. They come here and tell everybody why they don't like it and, more importantly, why they think a lot of us won't like it and all the fanbois crawl into the fetal position screaming, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THESE FORUMS. YOU CAN'T POST ABOUT THIS GAME NOT BEING GOOD. YOU JUST DONT LIKE MMO'S OR SOMETHING! YOURE A LIAR!"
What people don't get is that the negative criticize is a chance to save these people from themselves.
Wow fans are WoW fans. Let them be. Everyone has their own set of preferences in MMO's/games. WoW served it's purpose for me and killed many hours of my life, filling them with fun at the time. Which it was supposed to. Whether WAR is revolutionary or not, it's not WoW. I'm pretty bored with WoW. There's not much left to do in the game other than grind rep or honor. I need an MMO or game to play that isn't WoW. WAR will be that game for a few months at least. However, I hope WAR launches with 'more' than what it is now. Whatever 'more' equates to, that's the question.
Agreed, WoW took a few years from me and It was good but I feel like playing something else now. I think WAR will do nicely.
I hope Mythic stays focused on RVR and not get de-railed by the WoW masses. If they buckle and start shifting focus to PVE element's then I think the game will be doomed.
In saying that, I do like the 'complete' experience, PVP and PVE. So I guess WAR will be a good mmo to go along side with another more PVE mmo. Currently I play FPS if I get bored with WoW.

You just want to imagine they are trolls. Just because someone doesn't agree that this game is "awesome" doesn't mean they are trolling. In fact, people that think this game will just be "meh" and nothing special are definitely louder right now. I'd have to say your posts are non sequitur at this point, so maybe you're the troll.

You ever think that maybe the reason he was burnt out of this game is because..
A) The game really does feel generic
They didn't really improve the game that much over the 5 months of his testing.
C) The game has the most linear PVE structure i have seen out of all the mmos i have ever played
all these are good reasons take your pick.
Hype is my nemesis. i will fight it til the day i die whether i take it down or it takes me down. So depressing, Yes?

I'll give you three guesses and the first 2 don't count.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
this is not a reasonable review, it is a guy who played the game for five months and got bored with it. i hardly call that a review. a review would state some of the good aspects that made him play for five months. most people can't even play conan for 30 days, five months seem like there was some enjoyment keeping him there.

So how do you think the game will go for the millions of people whose first game was WOW?
Myself I played Guild Wars for 18 months, Tabula Rasa for 9 months. WOW for 20 minutes.
You have a wife and children? Your immature writing suggests otherwise....
Anyway... This was a very honest and well laid out review which I appreciate.
I'm also Beta testing and I have come to a similar conclusion.

Next.
Do you think people will respect you or think you are cool with this kind of attitude? I feel like you need more off forum conversation time.

Get back on topic drama queen. You should at least try to respond in some way, shape or form to the OP.

nobody is backing anyone up. i think it's the fact you trolls have been in this forum all day saying how horrible the game is, YET YOU ARE STILL IN THESE FORUMS AT 12:00 at night EST. still posting. i don't see how you cannot like the game you been hanging out in the WAR forums all day like a fanboy. are you lying to yourselves or something? and im immature. at least i like the game, i have a reason to be here.

like I said, read every post first idiot. When some fanboi makes a post like this :
I'll tell him where to go. Now quit with the straw man tactics and stfu.
