Necessity of tanks and enough tanks to go around?

With each side down to two tanks, how necessary are tanks for PvE?

If only 2 out of 10 classes on each side are tanks, will there be enough tanks for PvE activities?  Can melee dps and support classes act as passable tanks in PvE?

They have a place in PvE/RvR and from what I saw this past weekend, the gaps will fill in quickly.

All four of the tank classes are pretty popular. Maybe order might be a little short but I seens tons of BO and chosen. There are lots of IBs and quite a few SM.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

The four remaining tanks are a lot of fun. Never really liked the warrior/fighter class in any RPG before till WAR. They did a good job at making it all around more fun and useful in PvP.

Empire suffers in PQs very early on due to the lack of a tank, I imagine Dark Elves have a similar issue (can't speak from experience being somewhat of an Elf hater), but people tend to migrate fairly quickly. I've seen a Swordmaster taking part in the very first Empire PQ for example.

I don't think a lack of tanks will be a problem seeing as 'warriors' are the most played class in RPGs.

As with any game, if there is a need of a certian class then that class will eventually have people playing them.  if you and me and every other jo schmo rolls up a dps class and we all keep dieing because we have no tanks, then you and/or and a few other joe schmo's will decide it would make things a whole lot easier if we were a tank.

BO’s are not over powered I was able to take them 1v1 with no healers in the mix about 60% of the time as an Iron Breaker. But if you start backing either with a couple of healers it can get down right nasty. So the short of it is he who has the most competent healers is going to take the fight most of the time.

It's not hard for races to travel to other locations to assist with tanking.  Not like if you roll Order and are stuck without tanks until level 20 or something.

Does anyone think that a Warrior Priest could be a back up tank??

No. My Chosen tank took out Warrior Priests ALL the time.....and pretty fast I may add.

The two missing Tanks are needed, especially in the case of the Empire. The Dwarf and High Elf areas have plenty of content to keep players there for some time and I found the Empire's first RvR area seriously lacking in imported Tanks to be a shield for utility fighters like the Witch Hunter and the Warrior Priest. As the conflict continued through the day I played, there were fewer and fewer people defending the objective in the face of an overwhelming number of Destruction forces, which used Chosen and Marauders at the front. A Witch Hunter is no Tank and I died...a lot! I finally imported my Swordmaster to the area and things were slightly better, but one or two Tanks is not enough and eventually there were next to no allies to be found.

Keep in mind that there are those who don't want to play Dwarfs or Elves and those who do may likely want to stay in their racial areas for as long as possible.

the "tank" is so cliche.. SM's can spec to be BETTER at tanking or DPS but I dont think any class truly HAS to be a tank... I dont think there will be a need for "waiting for tanks to group up" because I have learned in the preview that if you have enough firepower and at least one class able to heal that you can down a PQ boss by just sharing aggro... No one has to just stand there and tank ALTHOUGH it would make the task a little easier but its not one of those things to fret..

My white lion could sustain just as much damage as my SM and also put out some nasty dps to boot (for aggro), so in essence he "could" tank if the need arises..

The Bosses are cake compared to the Champion types that come before them in Public Quests and yes, you need a shield for those. But in RvR in the Empire, Tanks are few and far between, Destruction wins by sheer force of numbers and people give up and roll Destruction. No one likes losing all the time.

Tank wont be a problem at ALL ive seen something like 8 IB in one scenario . As usual the class that will lack will be healer . From what ive seen very few ppl actualy healed alot , most healer were mostly tring to dps while watching ppl die ....

  • bensculptbensculpt Member Posts: 80

personally i think there a mostly useless class in War, but thats me. Theyll be way too many on Destruction and way too few on order. I think as long as u have healers you dont need them, and the game seems to reward dps classes the most, as for pvp destruction always hase too many close combat classes giving order a big advantage in pvp, basiclly tanks run up, try to distract the newbs and try to get 1 kill before there wasted lol!

Oh and another thing theyll be plenty to start, but when people catch on that healers /tanks get crummy scores in pqs, i expect less people to play them.

see now i kind of agree with wat ben is saying! i got to play the tank IB in preview weekend and i kno thats not alot, but from wat i experienced, theres nothing special about them. I mean, i did better playing with a warrior priest! i kno this is only on the order side, but i agree, once people begin playing with them and realizing that they lack in certain areas, people will drift away from that career. if anyone disagrees with wat i'm saying plz let me kno. I like the feedback!

i think healing will be very problematic in war , because alot of players dont understand how they work in war am sure mythic will make changes to this .

Lol ppl who are saying that tank are useless didint get to play with good tank it seem . I have played an IB up to lvl 18 in PW and they just pul so much damage . In scenario i would easily get 1-4 top damage and if u put some healing behind me ill be first with a large margin .

With the 25% increase damage tactic and a 2 hander i run to healer/squishy cast taunt on em ( increase damage by 30% for 15 sec ) then my str buff and i can drop anyone very fast unless he got some good healer behind .
