In my opinion UO is still best of THE BEST MMORPG's in concept after all these years and gameplay on MMO scene actually didnt even improved by much. All is about graphics now, but i dont care. Im still around UO, hell I must say i dont like OSI-style. I dont want to promote unofficial servers and NO, ppl dont play there because its FREE. Its just different and changing. Ppl create so many creative ideas so its now greatest playground for bright minds. It was actually one of those, which showed me UO 10 years ago and after few months I relocated to official. But after years and years you just have to find something different, new ppl, new items, mobs, systems. You have to admit, its their game and their vision. When they screw or improve something you have to live with it or quit. But there is still option to get back to what you liked. They cant with same ruleset please all players, everyone have certain vision, what HE/SHE would like to play. And all is possible in world of UO and thats where i see its real potential. Job like this have to come from heart and hard work of dedicated ppl. Not just by bunch of well-payed  "Here and there" programmers and "like-to-be-rich" management.

The thing that made UO the best for me (back in 1999-2001) was the fact that it was an MMO simulation. I started playing RPG's since the first Ultima on the Commodore 64 so I had to take a chance on UO and boy did I love it. I started with a friend of mine who was also an old Ultima fan and we ran around and killed chickens, then cows, then bears then our first real monster! It was so exciting. We chatted with a lot of people and just went exploring. The artwork was fantastic for being 2D. We had no clue what to do and we didn't care. We just did whatever we could and was earning skills and having fun with it. I think the whole humility thing at the beginning was what made UO the best. We met so many kind people willing to help and we ended up playing the game for a couple years before getting burnt out. Here it is 2008 and I'm seriously considering about going back to UO because after playing City of Villains/Heroes for a couple years, all other MMO's are now boring to me (yes, WoW is so damn boring) and I really miss the whole "feel" of UO. The funny thing is i used to play UO on a 56k modem and would get so pissed off when someone would call the house and disconnect me lol. Those were the days...

But ya, I think I will give it a try again. I don't care if they made the graphics better, as long as I can get back that feeling of nostalgia again, I'll be happy :)

With the Power or Vanquishing etc. As UO moved further and further away from the perfect Britannia medieval simulation that it was, the less I started to enjoy logging in to play until it was time to say goodbye.

That's exactly what did it for me, as well. If they had simply continued adding content rather than go with the radical changes that came with AOS, I'd almost certainly still be playing it. But instead I gave it over half a year afterwards until my yearly subs ran out, then was glad I was leaving when I saw what the next expansion was including with the ninjas, etc.

It completely lost what made the game immersive for me when the publish that prepared for AOS hit. If they had made a 'classic server' that kept the old systems I would have switched to that.

Nice post....It would be nice if the whole series was updated graphically and re-released.

Actually when it comes to MMOs Hack n Slash is rarely worth a monthly fee. Most people want more options for their money rather than simply killing things. Say what you want but one of the reasons WOW draws so many is that it brings in players not normally associated with MMOs.

I always wished that Lord British wouldve made a sequel to UO or at least enhance the graphics a little more. UO was probobly one of the coolest games out there. I still have nightmares of seeing the words "Corp por" then getting zapped.

Time is the simple answer! All of us here who have been playing the damn game since launch know the game has had its up and downs and the changes made early on were great but a bit extravagant. Look ill put it to you all this way, does anyone remember the feeling you got playing those first few days? Weeks? months? Its not something anyone can make again, that game could get your blood pumping as soon as you stepped out into the world. I am sorry too Kingdom Reborn I think was the worst choice they could have made with the game, its pretty yes, but who played that game for it being pretty?? In respect to other games it looks like a manatee strung up on boat, or Rosie O'Donnell on a fishing trip. I would also like to add I am a strict Republican so I hate anything that has to do with change. Keep it, and enhance it, do not change it!

AoS ruined it.  I didn't want another item based game.  I came back, played for 4 more years and had some fun, yes but it was a different game.  What completely ruined it for me was getting banned, castle deleted and for EA to then later say "oops, we made a mistake".  uh, yeah.

    Did they remove Trammel?

    That's why.

EA ruined it starting way back in 1999

There has been several times I had thought about coming back just to tool around.  But having done mostly everything I ever wanted to in UO plus I refuse to let myself pay more then 1 monthly subscription.  It just isn't in the cards for me.

If they were to lower the price, offer a lifetime membership (LOTRO) or maybe go with a guildwars business model I'd probably start up again.  Till then I'll just remember my time in UO fondly.

I actually did try going back not long ago.  I bought the 9th anniversary collection, loaded it up...and quit again shortly thereafter.  The game is just nothing like it used to be.

I continued to play after Trammel was introduced, it wasn't that big of a deal to me.  It's not like they completely removed PvP from the game, they just gave people who didn't like getting ganked for no reason an option other than running to EQ.  I actually applauded them for the decision.  The only people who complained were the ones who took pleasure in ruining someone else's day. Honestly, the game got better, in my opinion, after Trammel came along.

I played UO right up until Age of Shadows.  While I loved being able to customize my house, I did not like everything else that came with the expansion.  With AoS, they removed the freedom of character builds by forcing people to take either necromancy or some paladin attributes to compete.  Add the introduction of skill improving jewelry, artifact weapons/gear, and luck to that and the game I loved suddenly vanished.  Suddenly people who just started the game were able to acheive things those of us who really put in the effort for worked years to get.  It was a sad, sad day.

So, no, I will not go back to UO again.  The game I loved is gone, but I will remember it always and hope someone, some day, has the courage to make a new game of the same caliber as the original.

If you ever heard about Dark Fall, and it's in mmorpg's game list.

I know the developer is inspired by UO "the old days", it's been in development for long.... time since it's a small developer, but I hope they can get the game out sometime this year for beta.

The combat/healing was a poor system. Then they took the game in the wrong direction. (Races/elves)

Only time I would go back is to go back in time to 1998-99 and ask my former self if I can have a couple of hours to play on my computer.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

then look for a privite shard. there is several with more players than all the EA shards put together.

The game won't run on my computer and their tech support is manned by 5 year olds that think defragging your HD is actually going to cause the game to magically work.

A lot of people use the excuse of the Trammel/Felluca split, however if they were as hard core pvp'rs as they claimed they were they'd never have moved to Trammel they would all still be hacking each other up.

However, as seen they're not as hard core as they'd like everyone to think, because they all moved to Trammel and whined about how nobody was on Felluca anymore. Uhh, move your ass back to Fella and it won't be empty. Oh wait that's right, you don't want to do anything but gank and grief people who could care less about pvp. Sorry I forget occasionally.

I am suprised to hear someone can't play UO these day.

You know how old that game is, and the graphic is just 2D overlay 3D look only.

Unless your computer only has old model on-board graphic, you should be able to play.

If your graphic is slow when you move it's because of poor programming when the game developed, and it's not your graphic card.

    What is your system spec?
