Unless you are an altruist, and really want to help test the game, or an obsessive who does not mind replaying the same content again and again -
Why play open beta? Why all the excitement?
It's not like the game is really difficult, so no need for pre launch 'practice'.
Maybe you can test some different classes... knowing you will never play them... but tbh if I am going to try out a class to level 8 or so (by which time you have a sense of what it's about) I don't want to lose it to a wipe.
Soooo... what am I missing with this excitement about open beta?

To help test a game you love.
I'm going to try a few of the classes that I've been curious about. None that I think I'll play at launch, but you never know. I hated playing tanks until I played the IB. Gonna try the Witch Elf, Marauder, and the Black Orc.
I am in it for both reasons. I like testing and providing feedback. I have beta tested for years now. I also use that time to test out classes/ Races I would not normally play.
I am a fan of the good guys in general so I will probably focus on Order in live game but in Closed Beta I played a Black Orc (as I did not expect to play one later). The thing is the Black Orc was fun to play.
I am probably going to play a Chosen in Open Beta and see how that goes.
I have check out eveyr class so I know what I want to play when the game starts.
And if I don't enjoy replaying a MMORPGs content then I don't enjoy the game. I don't play MMOs just to make one character, get the max level and stay there.
And I do mostly RvR. So it's not really "content" I'm replaying anyways.
Maybe play the other team. Maybe try the open servers if they have any. Maybe level up and fight in different areas. There's a lot of reasons to play again, but all of this is of course assuming you got to play the preview weekend. In my guild there are several who did not get the first chance so this will be their first run.

well theyre holding the open beta as a final prelaunch stress test and bug net, the more of us who roll up a class or 12 and play them to find things like the pw ai bugs and what not the more is fixed for release and that benefits the game. i myself am severly addicted to warcrack from the previous closed beta time spent in game and i need another dose to cure my withdrawl!
its like giving a crack addict some trial crack & saying to him, "we are testing this & if you take it you're memory of you taking it will be wiped the next day" hes still guna take it simply because he craves it.
ill be in OB.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'll play open beta because I enjoy playing games? Isn't that why anyone plays any game?
I am not an altaholic. In fact, I have a reputation of taking my first character to the top level and barely, if at all, messing with other classes. Since I want to be able to jump right into WAR with a clear idea of what class I'm going to play, with whom I'm going to play, and on what server said playing shall take place, I find OB a great opportunity to try out every class, help test the game for stability, and not have wasted actual game time to find out what class truly calls my name. This way, I'll be ready to jump in the action with my friends, and not realize, ten levels into the game, that I don't like my class ... just to see my friends shoot above me while I reassess the situation.
Since I played most of the Order classes in the preview weekend, I'll be wrapping up some loose ends (really making sure I know how I feel about each Order class, and trying the ones I haven't gotten a chance to play yet) and then heading off to experience Destruction. Though I highly doubt I'll play Destruction... I've always played the good guys, and enjoy Paladin type classes the most usually.
Though I'm heavily leaning towards the Warrior Priest, who knows what surprises the other classes might have for me? I've never enjoyed playing a straight healer, and yet, in the preview weekend, I had a blast playing the Runepriest... in PvP... just healing! Who'da thunk it? So I think I owe it to myself, and the friends I'll be playing with, to have an idea of which classes I really enjoy, and be able to single out the one I want to take to the end!!
Why play in beta? Well there are some out there who sincerely like helping a company test their game for bugs, imbalances, etc., but I'll wager that most people want to try playing it ahead of schedule. I understand my role in helping a game run smoothly before by release, but I honestly play betas as a "free trial" before I actually buy a game. I will NEVER buy an MMO without trying it first. That's just a rule I have, and if I don't end up in WAR beta then I'm just going to wait for a free-trial or one of my friends to get it to decide.
Open beta is a strange concept. I think that originally it was intended for final stress testing, but frankly it's easy to overload a server without any help from beta testers.
So, what is it now? It's a preview play - "Hey, come get a sneak peek at our game for free!" If it's really polished and fun (as it should be at this point), then it will build hype for the game and increase sales at launch. Frankly, they should change what they call it from "open beta" to "pre-play."
Most players want in just to help themselves decide what they want to play before the game starts, so they don't have to re-roll after launch and get behind.
fair point, fair point.
I just don't like seeing my character wiped... I generally play games, apart from the fun of it per se, to explore, progress, develop. I hate replaying games... (unless CIV 4 or something like that)
I do open betas to see if a game is actually worth purchasing. I have enough income to comfortably purchase an occasional game and keep it subbed, but not enough to waste on a game I will not end up playing that will just sit around gathering dust. $50 is $50, no matter how you look at it.
1. It gives you a chance to try out classes that, after level 8 (as you alluded to), you may decide you DON'T want to play any further. Still, you can satiate your curiosity about that class and not waste time trying them out once the game goes live.
2. It's still a Beta, and from what I've seen Mythic are keen on input to improve the quality of the game. They not only want to test server stresses they want to fix bugs that crop up last minute and make the game that much smoother when it releases commercially.
3. You can start working with your guild (yep I'm in one) on the teamwork dynamics of the game, start testing balances, etc. That certainly wouldn't ruin the game, now would it?
If at first you don't succeed, pay someone who will.
LOL--- Cause its gonna cost you 5 bucks to try the game NOW instead of paying $50.00 and $15 a month to decide if you like the game.
Open Beta is like free play... You need to understand monetary value.
what if you look at it as $50 outa $9,842,235,343.23? Loses its flavor
Seriously though I agree. I have plenty to drop on games but I didn't get that much without knowing how to budget and spending that much on something so trivial, especially when you're never going to play again b/c it sucked ass, is just downright crappy.
I also like to get every class i'd want to play out of the way to know which I truely like better. I don't want that "grass could be greener on the other side" kinda idea while playing.
So really this troll thread should be "Honestly, why would you not play the open beta?" There might be some decent answers but imo the pros outweight the cons.
It's a great way to experiment with classes so you know what you want on release. Also, if you are like me, you absolutely need more Warhammer as soon as possible! These past two weeks have been crawling by so slowly that I am fully prepared to play anything Warhammer at all if it is presented to me and soon. I also love the way the developers listen to us as a community. I want to be able to have been there the last stretch before launch and contribute whatever I can because I honestly believe the company cares what we think.

I want to compare the feel of tanking between a couple of classes.
I'm primarly interested in Chosen, but Swordmaster is also tempting, and whichever playstyle I like more will end up determining my main.
Also, I want to figure out what my main alt would be. Depending on my main (order v. destro) choice it could be white lion, witch hunter, or disciple.
Exactly! I got a taste of the game during the preview weekend and had an absolute blast. Open beta will just be another opportunity to have some fun before the game is fully released.
The point of OB was because they delay the release of the game when they was in Paris and announcing the CE and the bonus items that came with it. They added OB to say to the people at that time, "thanks for your order and patience"
Plus its a couple of days of trying the classes to see which one you want to roll on. Really in sense its a couple of days of L2P and have FUN.
