I didnt really think of it yet, but its just like every other MMO (cept Pre-CU SWG and UO).
Even though there is two sides, their classes basically mirror each other in terms of abilities, just like WoW.
Err with all due respect, but no. Its not like that in every MMO. Vanguard for instance has all very different healer classes. Blood Mage and Disciple play totally different. Same for DPS and others. I dunno about WAR since EU beta has not yet started, but no, it is NOT the case in every MMO that all class types are alike in other MMOs, nor should they.
I dont understand what your trying to say.
But Melee DPS will always be melee DPS. Does not matter the mechanique of it its still melee DPS.
That goes for Healers, Tanks, Ranged DPS.
Hybrids change that. But then again hybrids are usualy gimp as hell in most games or forced to be stuck in one of their hybrid roles.
And i dont think you understood him at all. He was refering to when shamens and pallies were sapose to mirror each other in WoW. Just like Engies and Mangus Mirrior each other in WAR. Meaning they both are ranged DPS and they BOTH have stationary pets. Yet still have their own differences.
While it's true that each archtype is similar in tier 1, once you get past tier 2 they start to become a lot more different. By the time you reach 40 the classes have a lot of skills unique to themselves.
But they still share the same archtype.
Mythic never said that all classes would be 100% unique, there have always been mirror classes and archtypes.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
I think if you look at the classes and compare the abilities and skills available to them, then superficially they do appear to be the same classes.
However, they all play quite differently.
Witch Hunters tend to follow the tank charge and go head to head and provide DPS.
Witch Elfs typically tend to be more sly about their attack patterns. Hit hard, fast and get out quickly.
My DOK is more DPS oriented than my War Priest despite them being similar. They feel different and in RVR, you see more War Priests assisting with support than DOK who tend to be more melee oriented; despite similarities. I definitely do not play my DOK and War Priest the same way.
The similarities are all there but they do play differently and they definitely feel different. It may be that you are too used to classes being completely 100% different in WoW so you're looking for every class mirror to have completely different abilities and at different levels. Just as a reminder, WoW had exact copies that played the exact same way for horde/ally. WAR provides the variation that was not there in WoW when compared with the other side.
In DAOC, it was the same as in WAR. All classes had a mirror and apart from some differences, they all played quite differently in RVR and PVP. Just like in WAR, the minor differences, combined with the lore and descriptors, make the class feel different as well as play differently. The focus of each class mirror is slightly different. Enough to make them a different class altogether.
For insrtance, a Mid Warrior was more feared and can be seen to be more effective than an Albion Armsman. And the Hib equivilent was quite different with a different focus entirely. This is despite them being class mirrors with many similarities.
As WAR is a class based game, i.e. the devs, mostly, decide what groups of abilities are available together, the similarity of the different classes doesnt surprise me a bit. Because in class based games you have variations of your tank, healer, melee damage dealer, ranged dmg dealer and crowd control classes so you can basically just have 4-5 base type of classes and everything else is just different flavours that are bound to be similar since the devs decide what the flavours are and not the players and for the sake of easy balancing the devs will often make the different variations quite similar.
If you want true variations then the devs need to stop taking the easy way to design games and create skill based games where you are free to choose what skills you want your character but implemented in a way that there is no super combination of skills (e.g. a plate wearing, crowd controlling nuker that can also heal). And that is a hard thing to pull off and to my knowledge the only game that had somewhat succeded in that was Asherons Call 1.
But even in that game you basically had the same type of 'classes' as mentioned above but there were alot more variations. For example you could create a melee character that was based on agility or strength or a mix of both, you could have mages that specialised in offensive casting but still had some defensive casting and buffing as well, you could create an archer that was excellent in melee defence and also do some melee attacks or one that could buff himself and others and so on.
Anyonw know if there are any skill based games scheduled in the near future?
You played WoW for 2 years messing with these 8 classes.
Now war comes in with 20 classes. Or 10 if you want to get technical about mirrors. That's 2 extra classes to try out. What is so disheartening about hits? On top of that each class has 1 or 2 mirrors to choose from with a slght variation in play style. I fail to see how any of this is bad. It sounds like I got a lot of choices ahead of me, not just in looks and attitude but also in slight variations of skills and play styles.

How many classes are in WoW currently? 8
