I always thought of all the mmorpgs currently and coming vanguard still had the potential to be something fantastic. If the trial turns out to be great will you resub or sub to the game?

I already did, it is fantastic, and better than all the pve mmos out there now

Hi there.
I actually re-subbed for a month last week to get a feel for the game after 1 year+ away. I am looking forward to GU6, but my opinion is that VG still suffers from one key issue stopping it to become a very popular MMO (emphasize VERY = mass market, as "hardcore" MMORPG players will look beyond this): that issue is the poor character animations (running, jumping essentially) and plasticky feel.
Granted, there are new models coming out, but as I understand the animations remain unchanged. Comparing VG animations to those of AoC, WAR, WoW and LotRO, GW, and many others, I felt after going back that it takes away from the great potential behind the game/world.
My 2 cents, but i will stick with it for the month I paid for and take it through GU6...

I cant lie about this, I love this game. but after a coupek months of playing way back when the game started i got bored and annoyed at how yes i loved qualia but Kojan which was more my style and my main toons home was seriouly lacking in attention. i do wish more peopleplayed becaue it was also very difficult to start a new toon.
I still have a soft spot for this game and possibly I would resub if the trial isle really hooks me. The problem though is that I no longer have the time to raid or be a part of a hardcore guild, and VGs endgame is not very casual friendly at all....
But for folks out there who are right into PvE raiding I strongly recommend VG. Imo it is the best PvE experience currently on the market.
If alot of people start playing it again then yes deffo
If they have fixed combat animations I might, you spend most of your time in these games fighting so it bloody well should look awesome.
Nope. I tried it soon after launch, then again a few months back when I was invited to return to see the changes. The games had two oppertunities to fix what was broken, yet bugs still remain from beta.
It has a LOT of potential, but I'm not waiting forever for that potential to blossom. It's had it's chance and failed.

Well, Vanguard failed its big shot for fame and fortune.
However I am under the impression that the game had a sound plan that was poorly implemented due to lack of funds and mismanagement.
Still, I hope it can realise enough potential to become solid second tier title. While I am not the so-called SOE hater I must admit that I am wary of the company. Mostly due to its past performance.
if they have fixed all of the bugs i would resub in a heart beat i really liked the classes vanguard has.but right now i'm too into warhammer to give it another try but down the road i had planned to play it again.
Anyone who even remotely cares about the future of the MMO industry would not re-sub to this game no matter how good it turns out, unless SOE refunds or credits 100% of the money previous customers already paid for the game.
Giving them a second or third chance will just encourage them and other developers to screw over customers again in the future.

I tried the trial, and tbh I only made it thru maybe 5 days of playing. Vanguard is a snore to me. To each his own but not for me I had more fun and adventure playing RoE. But thx for the chance to try it anyway.
Im sorry SimonTemplar but the free trial just went live today (9/10/08). I dont see how you could have had the chance to play it for 5 days already?
Ive played the trial on the test server and thought it was very well done. Vanguard has had its ups and downs but after trying AoC and War beta I find that I always come back to the free feeling I get from Vanguard.
If you like great PvE then the free trial is worth downloading. I play on Sartok (the player-vs-player server) and also find that the PvP can be a lot of fun.
I was a big VG supporter and was planning to come back until recently.
Two reasons I will not be coming back. First, I still listen to Voyages of VG podcasts from time to time, and from what I gathered from their fan faire podcasts, SOE didn't even mention the game in some of their keynote speeches and spent a lot of time talking about the EQ games. VG, may have a nice little dev team, but that tells me the money will not be going into the game to give it the attention it deserves and it is still around because the small cult following it has still provides an income stream, albeit a small one, and not because it truly is a game that could be turned into a gem and would receive the necessary funding to do that. The game lacks endgame content, and without $$, the endgame content will be slowcoming.
The second reason is the new character models. This really was VG's chance to make a big comeback and the models for me were a fail. VG was beautiful for what it was, why it tried to become something else is a mystery to me. Heroes are about their actions and not what they look like. Heroes should look like the townfolk of the world they reside in, but with sweet looking armor and weapons, and not like a bunch of pro wrestlers and strippers. VG's characters went from looking like savvy dungeon crawlers, to a bunch of tools worried about if their new armor makes their butt look fat. The idea of armor is to cover and protect, not to look like the tools of Tortage. Some of the models look better, but some of them are downright worse looking then their predecessor.
Having said all that, if you have not tried the game, its worth a free look. Really kept rooting for this game since release because I saw so much potential in what I thought was one of the few truly next gen sandbox MMO's out there. Sadly, I don't predict a big comeback anymore and will be moving on.
I have a 50 Ranger and unsubbed after the farse of GU5 what a load of bunk ... I would return if they added content and remove all the Childrens Neo Pet mounts...
What kind of logic is that? They had a bad release, so you don't pay them subscription money. They fix the game and its now fun, you give them the money they deserve for fixing it. Its not liking you're buying the game twice.

No, because after playing WOW, VG, LotRO and then EVE I realized that MMO's w/o a strong PVP component just aren't for me.

Vanguard is very boring and monotonous for me. The fact that servers are low on population kind of makes this even more apparent though.
Vanguard really isn't a game for everyone, it's very very heavy on grind and if you don't like that, I don't think you'll like Vanguard.

No, it's more like you were giving them a $50 interest-free loan to release a game sometime in the next two years when you thought you were buying a game you could play right away.
If you want to reward their fraud by giving them even more of your money, feel free, but just don't expect this trend to ever end if they turn out to be successful.

I was a subscriber for a couple of months last year. SOE gave me free playtime this summer. Not sure if it was a part of that Living Legacy campaign stuff for EQ2, or not.
I decided to give it another try. I played for 5-6 hours, before I couldn't take any more. It was worse than I remembered. And even more deserted. The only positive part was that I didn't encounter any bugs.
Been there. Done that. Twice. Won't be a 3rd time.
I love the viral marketing for Vanguard.
Somehow the game has magically transformed into a "decent" experience... Ya right. Vanguard is one of the most empty and dead worlds in any MMO I have ever played.
I could care less about "potential"... I don't pay a game $15/month for potential, I pay for it to provide me a quality gaming experience.
So many on here have such low expectations of what we as consumers should be provided by the gaming companies.
Vanguard has had PLENTY of time to get it's act together, tried it 2 months back and it's still terrible. But it is published by SOE therefore there will always be viral marketers on here trying to trick you into subbing and spending your money on "potential"...
It's really quite lame.
Tecmo Bowl.
I have played Vanguard for a while now and feel that its bad reputation is very undeserved. The free trial is FREE! I think it is worth downloading and checking it out.
I cant help but think that its bad reputation is somehow the result of anti-vanguard marketing. I also invite anyone who feels that I may be some kind of viral marketer to go to vanguard players at vgplayer.station.sony.com and search for my character under Sesese.
People say the game has huge potential because it is a great game but ALSO has this feeling of a developing world/work in progress. When I log into Vanguard I dont feel trapped by invisible walls or separated from the world by zone instances. I also feel like I have a huge pile of options. Its true that the game does not always offer instant gratification. You need to keep your eyes open and search for some of the more interesting quests and content. But I personally wouldnt find the content interesting if somebody just handed it to me.
try the trial for yourself and make your own decision.
I can't say I will resubscribe. Free trials are nice, but it doesn't change the fact that this game is not going to get any decent amount of content added. 2 years later and SOE is still playing around with character models and finishing up the content Sigil was already working on.
I can't honestly look at Vanguard and see it as a quality place to invest time building a character. The end of the game is visible and will most likely never grow beyond that.
Sure the game has potential [which has been the theme for 2 years now] and it might even be fun to play for 50 levels, but then the credits might as well scroll across the screen followed by "The End".
The people who claim everyone is a viral marketer are out of touch. SOE told VG's fanbase that the game isn't generating enough cash and that word of mouth would might be the only saving grace for it. But no one is gonna go out and spread word of mouth about a game they don't think is any good because if it wasn't any good, they wouldn't be playing it. I know there are plenty of people that honestly love VG so its pretty safe to say that most of the peope out there recommending it aren't BS'ing anyone.
For reasons I posted earlier in this thread, I no longer recommend VG, but I used too, and it always cracked me up when someone would accuse me of working for SOE. Wackadoos.
The game can be tried for free now and its worth trying out if for no other reason than so you can see firsthand what VG is about, because it is refernced so much by MMO'ers.
You nailed it man. With it becoming apparent that SOE is not willing to give this game the attention it deserves, I think after 2 years we can come to some conclusions.
Sadly, I don't think VG can be summed up any better than you just did in one sentence. Homerun.
Smashing your head against the wall repeatedly is free as well, but I doubt I will be trying that anytime soon.
There are a lot of ways to market a game. Word of mouth is lame. If they were really serious about resurrecting this game, they could start out by not charging $40 for it. Hell, LoTRO is a far better game by all accounts, and it is only $20.
