What happened with the interview just prior to launch where they said it would run better the more cores you had. There was absolutely no diff between 2 cores and 4 cores at same frequency. It was just one of many lies and now they are all of a sudden gonna start working on what they said already existed. Sounds exactly like Dx10 except that was even on the box. It's just absurd, if you are gonna lie, at least make sure you havent already given away the lie.
Please see the January '08 community video's posted on this site for confirmation that multi core is just two cores and in the future they would be adding the ability for even more. I did ask the question myself in that video. The reason why is because the community always thought that it would be native quad support at release, 6 months before release we had confirmation that wouldn't be the case. 2 = better than 1. Its also know that there is no difference between 2 and 4 currently.
I cant find the video where they interviewed some of the developers a few weeks before launch. One of the questions was, will this game run better with quad core. The answer he was given was that it would run better the more cores you had. Now I dont remember the exact words, but he made the impression that it was that way now and not some upcoming thing. This is of course no where near as serious as not including stuff that are printed on your box.
Using 4 cores, does that mean AoC would suck 4 times as much?
Will the third and fourth core make the crafting system suck less?
Will they enable working endgame raid content, and add more of it?
Will they add missing mid-level content, reducing the grind?
Will more cores fix +dam gem abuse, balance the classes, and end one-shotting?
Is the PvP system already in the game, it just couldn't be used because it requires two more cores?
Will more cores stop the OOM errors that cause you to crash to desktop constantly?
Will they allow more variations in armor?
Will DX10 magically appear with the new quad core support?
Can drunken brawling be added only with the inclusion of 4 core technology?
Will the GUI suck less with more cores?
Will OOC chat finally work right with that all-important third and fourth core?
Will they make spellweaving less of a complete joke?
Will they enable Powerpoints? Kingship? Villages of mobs that grow stronger and attack your city if left unchecked?
These are just off the top of my head. I'm sure the improved technology will do all of the above, and probably cure cancer, too.
Huzzah for quad core tech!!!
.... Ok, the game has a ton of issues. While the info is mildly interesting, the fact remains that the game is seriously jacked up (not just broken, but boring), and not likely to be fixed with more freakin' cores.
What?!? The game isn't enhanced for multi-core computers like the box says? Naaah, FC would NEVER do anything like that!
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
LOL yawn.. who cares.. You still have lag spikes that go from 100-9999 lmao since lauch.. oooh bug PVP in July 2008 then we get DX10 in AUG 2008 WOOT cant wait for those!
I haven't come across anyone in game for over a month who has said they have a lag spike like before.
I read and see guilds posting on you tube sieges that are smooth flowing and perfectly playable with working siege weapons, the boot out of zone bug gone, the mercs attacking etc.
There is a siege event on test server tomorrow if you want to see yourself.
DX10 was said that it will be shown in Aug in a press release before the game launched, not released then.
Nice summary of exaggeration you did there though.
LOL exageration? You of all people used that word? Oh what company makes that sub $1000 machine with monitor that runs AOC just fine?
On a side note I heard that Funcom is releasing a "finished" game "soon". Any news on that front?

Actually I play on an ancient rig.. P4 3.4 Ghz running Windows XP and 1 Gig of RAM.
I did buy an 9600 GT to play but I hardly doubt my rig is worth more then $400.

I believe Erlings official stance on this would be... a small number of users with old computers are having some tecnical problems but for most the game is PERFECT. LMAO
Note to self...perfect = total unimaginable, unfinished crap in Norwegian.

Great questions. I don't see quad core solving any of those problems in the least. Again, they care more about what is running the game instead of the game itself. I'm beginning to believe the PC version was just the test bed for the XBOX 360 version.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Go go Funcom! Anything they develop like Quad Core Support for their failure might make into someone elses hands that actually know how to right a good MMO.

And when you bought it it cost how much? Please count upgrades as well.
This is a shining example of why FC keeps screwing up. AoC currently has TONS of problems wrong with the game so WHY in gods name would they try to introduce additional features that will, undoubtly, add more bugs/problems with the game? My guess is it's to distract the easily distracted from the real problems such as those you listed in your response. The proverbial "smoke and mirrors" tactic. For every person like yourself who can see through the PR, there are many more who will think "oh wow.. they're really improving the game!", and forget about the real issues that FC isn't addressing. What they're doing is similar to what politicians and pundits do during a campaign. The shenanigans unfolding in the current US presidential campaign is a wonderful analogue. A lot of droning on about irrelevant issues; not a whole lot of real substance being discussed.
What FC is doing is something similar to that. They're trying to divert attention away from the real issues that people are complaining about by coming out with these announcements that sound great, but have no bearing on the issues people really want fixed. Have you seen (m)any people complaining about a lack of dual or quad-core support as a "game breaking" issue? Neither have I. Yet they're focusing on it. Why is it so hard for FC to understand? You need to first fix the current problems WITHOUT adding in more new features. All you are doing is digging your grave faster and deeper with mistakes such as these. They're buying time... throwing out little appetizers to keep people at the dinner table, while they work on salvaging the main course.

The first point JT addressed was brought up by another participant in our conversation -- the memory leak that's been giving users fits when they're trying to play for an extended period, or frequently changing zones. This is the number one item on their Honeydew List. I'd be surprised if it's more than a patch or two away. Hyboreans, rejoice! BI's query was a bit further down the pipe; namely, What sort of support will AoC (and subsequent titles) have for multi-CPU/multi-core systems? At the moment, according to JT, AoC makes use of a second CPU core primarily to handle some secondary tasks and physics effects (it will also engage Nvidia's PhysX effects if your system's got those particular toys available). The roadmap currently calls for the game engine to make greater use of a second core, and, slightly further down the road, scale across a third and fourth core to further boost performance. Given the heady demands it already makes, there's a good chance that folks would have invested in a potent, multi-core system as part of their intent to play, so it's nice to see that the extra horsepower these folks have available won't continue to lie fallow down the road. No ETA was given (despite the threat of vigorous noogies and much batting of eyelashes -- charisma was obviously my dump stat) for when this will come to pass, but it's good to see that it is part of their upcoming plans for the title, as well as future releases.
What I dont understand about this and most of the posts that you make is this Avery, WHEN are they going to change the entire layout of the game so it doesnt feel like a game made 5 years ago with todays graphics? I mean linear travel - Level restricted quest lines to the point you either have to wait up and help someone catchup - or be left out cause youre not on that one yet kinda thing? - Crashing to desktop during groups only to return and find the group doesnt see you as a member and you cant see that you are in the group - requiring you to log off - reboot and run the VERIFY system and maybe get 16mb - 900 mb of data that you already have all over again?
Quad Core - PFFFT tell us another one... you work for funcom dont ya?

You know the layout of the game in terms of zones was known YEARS before release - everyone knew exactly how it would be like.
You will find most mmorpg's have level restricted quests - nothing new.
Crash to desktops are rare, these days unless you are running the bare or below minimum spec PC.
The grouping issue was resolved quite a while ago, making me think your basing your experiences from a past client date and not the present. If you search the tech forums you will find maybe half a dozen from the first 50 posts about crashing to desktop and none for the grouping issue.

Yea crash to desktop is so rare its on their list of things to resolve. Even FUNCOM admits this one. Grouping issues, I believe that you find no more posts about these..... Although using what I may or may not find on the funcom forums as an example to PROVE anything other than FUNCOM locked the posts and or deleted them to avoid negatvie press is really sorta a weak leg to stand on, doncha think dude?
Back to what I was saying about there being no group issue posts.... In a game where you find like 45 people on a server during primetime, Im guessing FINDING A GROUP is a bigger problem than the bugs that go along with actually being in one! Again the game suffers from such STARK and GLARING issues that prevent it from being playable, talking about adding a quad core support module for this game is roughly the same as buying a Rolls Royce 10,000$ grill for your '68 Beatle isnt it?
Make that Talking about Buying a grill, as thats all FUNCOM ever does is talk and promise. So far the game remains a hunk of crap with more issues than it released with really.

I'm not as down on them about not relaseing dates but I'm still curious as to when they are going to add som e actual content to the game. Big news I've heard is DX10 which should have been there, an exp pack which should not even be discussed for 6 months to a year and a pvp patch that is something like 3 months late.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I don't know of any tech issue posts there were deleted do you? I mean ones that weren't merged into similar issues seen months ago or ones off topic in that subsection. Just saying they locked tech issue posts or deleted them is just saying it for the sake of it.
I guess the people playing mmorpg's like AoC are just like all of us who lay any other. I appreciate the game doesn't force group you and most of it can be solo'd. I can appreciate the group search feature common in most mmo's too when the need arises. Being a GvG game though, best bet is to search for a guild that is active enough for your tastes. A quick search just moments ago on deathwhipser resulted in 50 people looking for a group and 26 groups already established. I bet if Isearched any server I would see similar results. I could post pics, but you know that someone would come on and say they could be from anytime. Putting the game down because you think its poor with regards to finding a group is well, just a poor excuse.
Quad core support is there for those to enjoy its use, and ease the stress off the rest of your system once dx10 comes in with added dx10 features not seen in any other mmo. So long as its done right then im not too bothered. Warhammer uses 4 cores but more than 2 is very, very minimal and doesn't scale well. It's not really optimized properly for it yet. Crank up the settings on AoC, which might I add at fullest will push your system more than warhammer due to the nature of the way it looks and modify options presented. If quad core support helps here then its no bad thing, and thats why a lot of well known websites use AoC as a benchmark in this area. Adding quad core support if done properly is like adding a gold plated grill for your existing Aston Martin, not a spare tire.
You have to let go of your previous dimishing gripes and move on, pretty everything you bite on has been resolved or near to it.

Ok so there is an expansion coming over a year away most likely. In that time we have PvP update next week. We have 3 content playfields due in soon too. 5/6 dungeons slated before xmas (date not in stone). We have had dozen plus quests added in already in August, 40+ updates to existing quests for voice overs and couple dozen revisits to existing quests. We have also had 3 current dungeon / area re-vamps too last month. Issues pertaining to lack of content issues at particular levels in mid range will be address currently with area updates such as Tarantia Commons, Thunder River extra's and Ymirs Pass, 2 of which can be seen on videos around the web.
The only thing about the expac released was just one piece of concept art - thats all, with notification that there are plans to release late next year and a small team has already started working on it. I think its important to know future plans as well as short term goals.
In the mean time the biggest gripe is with the PvP update, that is the main area of concern addressed by the majority of the community and those who left the game - getting this addressed first is a good start and then we should see stuff backing that up in the next few months. We can't have everything at once - PvP update is important and coming in under a weeks time. Then extra content followed possibly by DX10 followed by more content and fixes.

Why are you talking about warhammer with me? I dont play that game... I would know it if it hit me in the face....
But as for everything Im complaining about being resolved a quick visit and I mean 30 seconds on two places in the forums turns up these posts: POSTED TODAY
I dont know about you but even folks STILL PLAYING are basically saying we all have our fingers crossed for the 17th! Interesting that War releases to the public the next day ( I did some checking since you decided to include warhammer in our banter)
Btw, dont expect anymore posts from me until monday, I get off in 5 minutes and its beer and RYZOM baby!

Slythe, my comments are not biased they are simply factual. Comparing games in terms of core optimization is not doing anything wrong, comparing games that will be optimized and the setting you can use in those games (current and future) is no bad thing either.

You can't compare them though, AoC has no quad core support. Saying that it will one day isn't enough to even argue the two. I am just surprised that you are bashing WAR, you usually are one of the most level-headed AoC supporters around here. BTW I have no desire to play WAR so I have no idea why I'm defending it.
Funcom should have optimized the game for quad core support before release, it would have helped greatly especially when the servers were flooded with people. But I'm sure it's not an easy thing to do, especially for an MMORPG as compared to other games like FPS's and what not.

You will have to forgive me, I can't see where I bashed warhammer. I am simply stating, and I'll repeat, its the first mmorpg to my knowledge that makes use of 4 cores. It does this minimally, I have seen this with my own eyes and there are some nice info thread on warhammer alliance about it. Including the fact that 2 fast cores are better than 4 slower ones with warhammer from tests run. With AoC and the options it has and the future deployment from quad optimization and the future DX10 inclusion its kinda a no brainer.
People are talking about the benefit of having more optimization in this area, and what is the point with AoC? The point is that AoC is more demanding on your hardware that the only other game out there that makes use of all 4 core if you have them ( WAR minimally because of beta, but fact is it still does). So how will this benefit AoC, well its logical to think that if game A is more demanding in terms of how it runs than game B, then adding in support for it especially considering AoC is going dx10 route with more dx10 features to shake a stick at, then this is a good thing. There is no other comparison we can make between games in our genre. There are no other games in our genre that offer ALL of the graphical settings that AoC does.
We know they didn't before release because people were pulled from the DX10 to optimized the game overall to make it better. Either a stable dx9 game or not so great dx10 game and not so great in performance terms dx9 game. Its an easy choice. Now after getting this out of the way, work is ongoing and picked up again on DX10 plus extra DX10 features will be put in the game. Yeah would be nice to have it at release, it didn't happen, that was 3 1/2 months ago, forgive me but I moved on from being upset. I can't change a situation i had no control over, there is no point in wasting time being upset about it. Funcom want to rectify the issue and the concerns raised, by adding in extra things in DX10 which was just recently shown at the GC'08 and Nvision'08. Good I am happy for this. They say they want to make it quad optimized because it's obvious down the road all these dx10 features when enabled with hinder the game.
As stated in the article:
"AoC makes use of a second CPU core primarily to handle some secondary tasks and physics effects (it will also engage Nvidia's PhysX effects if your system's got those particular toys available). The roadmap currently calls for the game engine to make greater use of a second core, and, slightly further down the road, scale across a third and fourth core to further boost performance.
Given the heady demands it already makes, there's a good chance that folks would have invested in a potent, multi-core system as part of their intent to play, so it's nice to see that the extra horsepower these folks have available won't continue to lie fallow down the road."
Whats the point is trying to switch words around to make something appear as it was not intended? or for that fact a bad thing?
Comments
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

And it plays fine..
that's about the same spec as my machine - made by Dell about 3 years ago LOL
With a £60 Nvidia graphics card added just last year, it also runs AoC high end (with character only shadows) just fine
Not to spam this thread but will you marry me? A+++
I believe Erlings official stance on this would be... a small number of users with old computers are having some tecnical problems but for most the game is PERFECT.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Go go Funcom! Anything they develop like Quad Core Support for their failure might make into someone elses hands that actually know how to right a good MMO.
Waiting for the next thing
In my opion im not sure Funcom will be around long enough to support this stock shares down to 9$ or less.

You are absolutely right.

Biased much?
