What is so great about Darkfall?

To me, it's the sandbox, open gameplay. A lot relate it to UO and old SWG. This is a GOOD thing...because there hasn't really been any major sandbox MMO since SWG. A game where you can do whatever you want, and shape your character how you want, play how you want, and basically live out your character in a free world. I'm just sick and tired of this linear, level grind, gear grind....crap. It just bores the hell out of me nowadays, and I can't stand it....I probably won't ever do it again. Darkfall is really one of my last bastions of hope for the MMORPG genre, it's really trying to take it a step back, to how it used to be, and that, in my opinion, will actually further advance the genre to be what it should be. An online universe where you live out your character. Nowadays it's just about leading players on, bait 'n hook, to keep them subscribed. I don't think companies realize that a sandbox game offers so much more, because you don't always need to bait and hook those players.

Anyways, that's a brief summary of why. Without going into any details. :)

Cause in darkfall, we can kill people like you. We have total freedom to do whatever we want. And of course the conseqenses that follows with such freedom

The fun of the Darkfall world will be in the freedom you enjoy in your character, your friends, your enemies, and your property.

Unlike other games, you will not be restrained by "class" mechanics; you may gain or lose any skills you want, based upon your own preference.  If you want to be in a clan that destroys the toughest raid bosses in the game and conquers dungeons, you organize your guild around this idea, and your build/admit your guild characters according to your needs.  If you want to be a guild that builds and maintains a huge city, you work on that.  If you want to be a lonely fisherman or craftsman who comes into town to sell wares from time to time, you can have a house in an isolated location where it is unlikely anyone will bother you.  If you want to be a bandit that attacks and loots players and settlements, you are able to play in that style as well.

There will be repercussions for a history of "bad" acts, through a karma/alignment system.  But largely, the players of the world will be responsible to dole out player justice and to create and maintain the rule of law.

This game looks so amazing compared to games of the last several years.  I am so tired of games where you endlessly grind for gear.  Thankfully, in Darkfall, gear is of much less importance, because gear is freely lootable and transferrable.

Like most the people in this thread I am looking forward to playing in a sandbox environment. While I'll be the first to tell you that the graphics and especially the animations aren't very good, I'm more than willing to put up with that for free-form gameplay.

Being able to have fun "instantly" without having to spend several months grinding out the prerequisite gear/money/class/etc. all the while being able to have an effect in a permanent gameworld will be amazing.

Yup this is one of the many reasons why Darkfall is so attractive to many people.  It reminds me of my first days of EVE when i joined my friends corp.  I had never played before and was a complete noob on my trial account...and i was invited into a pvp group with players who had been playing for years hardcore.  I was a tackler and actually had a significant effect on the fights.  Was a great feeling.

Now im more of a fantasy genre guy so im definitely excited to get back to it with Darkfall, while retaining the sandbox elements that i love about EVE.

There is nothing i like about this game. And there seems to be so many people defending it (mostly in a hostile way).

The game is going to fail miserably. I would literally bet everything I own on that.  It's so obvious that it's almost laughable people still follow it after the god aweful video they released.

It's nothing more than a crappy looking combat system with outdated graphics.

It's overhyped junk plain and simple. No other way to put it. Just like Dark and Light -- eventually people will finally see what the game is and IS NOT.  And it's the IS NOT part that will make it fail.

It will launch "probably" and due to the hype maybe even get a decent amount of subscribers for the first month or two than it will slowly dwindle as people get bored with the outdated graphics , lack of content beyond a combat system (iam sure) , and just run off to play games like War and Lich King and who knows what else...

They could not even get a real video game publisher to take this on. They had to settle for a completely inexperienced DVD distributor who was looking to try and halt their losses from software piracy by expanding into online video games. Darkfall is nothing more than a "test the waters" for them.

You would think that if this game really was able to live up to its hype that real game publishers would of snapped it up instantly.

This is Darkfalls fate.. unfortunately.. It missed the boat by about 4 years.

Of course the fanboys won't ever accept this as a possible outcome because they're all still playing the "amazing" game in their heads like they've been doing for the past 7 years.

Reality will soon deliver the proverbial slap in the face and show it for what it truly is though.

Nothing ever plays like it sounds on paper. EVER.

I felt the need to respond to this because I think that perhaps the poster doesn't realize what it is that many people like about this game.  Our interest has nothing to do with the graphics (which, aside from some sloppy animations, aren't all that bad really).  Our interest has little to do with the combat system (though I imagine there are some FPS fans that are excited by the idea).  Our interest isn't necessairly based on the UO style skill advancement system (though I will say that UO is the only MMO I've ever come back to again and again, dated graphics and all).

The element that excites us the most about this game is the concept of player controlled content.  The idea that players will control the direction of the great empires of the world, build the great cities of the realm, and produce the great artifacts of legend known throughout the land, is a notion that excites many of us more than WoW's brilliant but linear story or AoC's beautiful graphics.

Give me a world where the evil emperor is actually a player and where his evil empire can actually be overthrown.  Give me a game that lets me band together with others to advance a story that isn't reset for the players that follow, but rather is added to by subsequent heroes and villans.

I've played the great names in MMOs; practically all of them actually...  Very few have captured my attention for long because in so many my actions are fruitless.  Here, at last, is a game in which my actions and decisions may alter the course of the world long after I've logged off.

I was in the beta for that, but when they went live I got out...  I might have to try it again if it's free.  It wasn't all that bad in beta.

I think the feature that draws me to this game the most is that, from what I've read, the gameplay is focused less on level or equipment grinding and more on controling resources and territory.  This means that unlike in most previous MMO's, there's a chance that my actions could influence the story of the game for years to come.  I could, in theory, help to build a guild, a city, or an empire that other players will have to consider when making decisions about what they want to do.
I like the idea of having to consider what consequences my actions might have.  Will my skirmish set off a war between two powerful nations?  If I raise a powerful enough army, will it cause two warring nations to call a cease fire and ally together to defeat me?  If my bandit troop can disrupt the mining opperations of a powerful guild enough, will they loose a war that they might otherwise have won?  Can I convince a number of island city-states to join together into a lasting union?
In games like WoW, these types of things are faked in quests that everyone participates in.  The end result of the quest, regardless of success, is always that nothing in the game world really changes.  In an open PvP sandbox where resources can be taken and must be protected, there's no need to fake these sorts of stories.  They're a direct result of the PvP competition and thus the game world is constantly changing.
As to the question of what role items will play in the game, I can only assume that they will give players an edge in combat...  Of course there's going to be high level gear, but I imagine that even the dagger or sword you start the game with will do at least a point of damage per hit to your enemy even if he's wearing enchanted armor, and no matter how powerful your opponent's spells or weapons are, it should be possible for a first level character to jump back and dodge them, at least in theory.  There's no artificial mechanic that forces one player to win based on the amount of time spent grinding, but it always helps to do a bit more damage and take a few more hits.
Imagine the old saying "don't bring a knife to a gun fight".  Of course the person with the knife is at a huge disadvantage, but the knife can still kill, so the poor knife wielding noob still has a chance.
Who knows, maybe the guy with all the fancy gear got lucky and found the ultimate dead body, and he really can't hit a dodging character for crap...  For that fact, maybe the guy in noob gear just lost to a horde of dragons and is actually skilled enough to cut you apart even with the noob knife he's currently carrying.
As for how much it will "hurt" to loose your gear, I suppose that depends on what you're carrying.  If you're decked out with a bunch of enchanted gear made from mithril and dragon's blood, then I imagine it'll hurt a lot.  You'll have lost a lot of your edge in combat and you'll need to spend some serious coin or time to get that edge back.  Re-supplying with cheap, mundane gear, however, will still allow you to participate meaningfully in combat if you play carefully, skillfully, and smart.

You, sir, are welcome in my guild any time!

And what guild is that?  I'm looking for a group I like.

What is so great about Darkfall?
The fans of this game seems very hostile and quite frakly scares the crap out of me. But i am brave enough to ask; why do you like the game? Let's start with my backround and what i think is a good MMORPG. Now Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games is a huge genre. Like sports games. You might like American Football games but hate golf games.
Now I've played around 40 MMOs in my time my first was Final Fantasy XI and i'm now waiting for Warhammer Online. And yes i have played World Of Warcraft but didn't like it (only played to lv39).  And a lot of free asian games. And what i've learned is that you should not compare these games with each other. You don't go from Final Fantasy XI to Guild Wars thinking "Man this is not like FFXI at all and that is bad because it is not in FFXI". It's like sports games you don't go from a golf game to a Football (soccer) game thinking you're going to play a golf game.
But i just don't see anything i like about Darkfall! I'm don't like the graphics, i don't like the animations, i don't like the sound and the gameplay just doesn't seem fun for me. There is nothing i like about this game. And there seems to be so many people defending it (mostly in a hostile way).
So i'm asking you: What is so great about Darkfall?

the best part of darkfall is that they made one video after a decade in production.

    that's about it.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Well Im not sure if you'll see this reply since its so far back lol but to answer your question about looting......

No items are not as important in DarkFall as in other MMO's but they do still help. Being looted of items is an inconvienence no matter how easy it is to re-aquire it. If your a spell caster and get looted the main thing there going for is your reagents more than likely this is an inconvienece and it either gets the looter some clink clink or keeps them from buying them.

If you kill then loot someone it won't  cripple them nor will it take them a month to re-gear  but it does take some time and money to regain those items. So no items arent overly hard to come by for the most part and no they aren't the end all deciding factor in battles but they DO help and they do cost some effort or money to get.

Note that while your our farming if you die and get looted alot of that is probably going to be taken  this is a bit rough because someone profited off of your hard work. The excitement factor comes in play alot here. Can you succeed in escaping with your hard earned loot? Will some pkr show up and take it from you?  But to be honest it really is to hard to explain it, those that have played it and liked it can't get into any other concept fully because everything just feels to limited after.  This has been awaited by many of us for a long long time. After experiencing a sandbox other MMO's are just sad realy they don't feel much different than an RPG. If it isn't a sandbox I can't really see it as an MMORPG but thats just IMO. I don't want to visit someone else's world. I want to be part of a living world that I can help influence.

    Hello vapourware.

Lawl, you're on the old bandwagon. Get on with the times, the "IT WILL SUXOR" bandwagon is totally hip now.

"The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."

In response to the question about full loot. Same as above I'm not sure if your still reading but will give you my thoughts anyway. I am thinking that the risk of combat maybe so great that it would be prudent to carry very little at all and the stuff you want to keep is locked up safely in your house. Also, if you stay around the main cities you will have the protection of the city guards so there is less chance there I think of being attacked. However if you wander into the wild or travel off the road then there is nothing to protect you, and to be honest thats how it should be.

If your talking about armour and weapons than I think they will be far less important than other MMO's. Yes they will give you an edge but they wont be the deciding factor in the battle. Also, many people will just want to be merchants and crafters and so will hire guards to protect valuable cargo. So, if you have a nice piece of armour you have just paid 100 gold for than losing that is going to be far worse for you than losing something you paid 10 gold for.

It's going to be great I can see bandit guilds popping up, basically attacking people out alone saying "Your money or your life"...lol. Then other guilds being like the police and hunting them down. Thats proper MMORPG.

    1) gameplay -- real-time combat. 100% manual aiming and blocking. mounts/mounted combat. ships/naval combat. city building and sieging. player housing. explicit support for 200v200 battles. all weapons/armour/items/ships/props in the game are player craftable. dynamic quests.

    2) freedom -- huge zoneless world. no classes. no levels. spec exactly how you like. full-looting. travel anywhere in the world, there are no zones/invisible barriers/restrictions. player actions have direct consequences on alignment. no safe-zones. no restrictions on what you can build, destroy or attack.

    3) immersion -- no instances. friendly-fire. collision detection. real-world physics. arrows and spells have knockback. no player radar. bloodspray and visible damage. full scene dynamic shadows. "true" stealth. dynamic mob spawns. enhanced mob AI. real-world weather. day/night cycles based on a real planetary system of 2 orbiting moons. wind that blows the grass and branches of trees.

Also a full weather system, snow, wind, rain, fog, lightning, night/day.  The works.

First I will start out with the simple fact that I have yet to play this game.  But after reading their FAQ and reading through various posts on the forums I have to believe that this is the game I have been waiting for.  (Well not really waiting as I constantly have a new mmo going)

I thought Age of Conan would offer the immersive world that kept me hooked for at least a few years.  Sadly I am bored completely after just a few months.  I do hope things get better for AoC I just dont have the time to wait on it!

Me and some rl MMO player friends constantly talk about the perfect MMO and after looking over the Darkfall Online website I believe that this game hass almost everything we want in a game.

Now I just have to hope that the devs follow through and give me the experience that I have been hoping for.  If not I will try something else but from the looks of things, I wont have to!

Although a completely different setting i think Darkfall will appeal to us Pre-NGE SWG refugees, aside from the open PvP (was able to flag yourself for pvp or not in SWG) the game sounds similar in it's ideals and gameplay..

No story driven main theme to the game, you do what you want when you want.

    Open world not instanced

in-depth crafting (that means a damn unlike of WoW/LotRo/modern SWG) and player driven economy.

No true junk loots, from what i read it sounds like although something may be junk to you it may be worth a fortune to someone else.

No damned raiding for hours upon hours needed to get the best gear, the game is skill driven and the best items are crafted..

HOPEFULLY no gankers or griefers, this isn't certain but even with full loot open PvP there shouldn't be griefers or gankers as your items won't mean crap to them, time to truelly seperate the griefers/gankers for gear from the griefers/gankers to annoy players.

Personally i'm looking forward to Darkfall, not had anywhere to call home since the NGE hit Star Wars Galaxies as no other MMORPG can boast a fully player driven economy, decay and crafting that means something. My only reservation on it is the open PvP as i had a very bad experience in Vanguard due to gankers and griefers (was still level 7 after 2 weeks of playing cause i couldn't get anything done). With Darkfall it could be the same but i hope not, although gear and items aint the basis for combat it is likely to be hard for a new player to replace his starting gear after being ganked/griefed countless times.

open pvp and levels dont work  it hink it will happen in df but the griefers/gankers will have alot harder tiem because of the 4 noobs agaisnt 1 elite player lol  thing and not nowing how strong someone is when you attack them
