This is unplayable

I never had experienced any issues with VG in my old PC...but it was struggling to run the game performance-wise, so the gameplay experience lacked in that field.

So here I am now, with my brand new high-end machine thinking I could at last experience the game the way it was meant to be played; a grave mistake on my part. The game runs perfect from the FPS perspective...but crashes every 10 min. I'm not exaggerating: every 10 min it will either crash to desktop, or worse make a forced PC reboot.

Needless to say I have tried everything, have the latest video and sound drivers but, alas, nothing will fix this. I'm really disappointed because I thought Windows XP Pro SP3 were a stable platform. Apparently I was wrong (and VG is a very poorly coded program), and this combination is detrimental.

Sorry to say but I agree. We built a high end machine here last month, and VG was the first to be tested.

Was no differnce from the 5 year old outdated pc it replaced

But some say it runs good, heck idk ..........

Im not defending VG's stability, since ive never played it, but i do know that out dated drivers can cause a lot of crashes.  If your machine is new, theres a good chance that the pre packaged drivers for your sound card and graphics cards may be outdated.

If you havent tried to do so already, try to get the latest released drivers off the web.  My newish graphics card came with a driver that was old, and i needed to grab one off of nvidias website, made a big diffrence.

Update your drivers and mess around with some settings.

When I played I didnt have one crash, no lie. But my performance was much to be desired.

No idea what to say... Maybe head to the SOE tech support forums.  You can also look at the log files in the VG install directory, or maybe in the bin directory.  It might give you some idea what is causing the crashes.  Also run a full scan maybe you got a bad file?

I'm playing it and in the past couple months that I've been playing fairly regularly I've never crashed.  I can play for 8 hours and never crash and I'm not exactly the best configuration for stability...  I've never tweaked anything other then to max out all the graphics settings and to download and install the Drox UI with a few tweaks from the VG forums to get it to work with the latest GUs.

I'm running windows Vista 64, on a Quad intel cpu, 4g ram, and an 8800GTX.

Oh I've also run it for several hours trouble free on my wifes computer.

Windows XP sp3, AMD 5200, 4G ram, ati 3750.  My daughter used to play on this computer and would play for 2-3 hours without any problems.

Hey I just saw this and through it might help....

    From VG forums

There is a bug with shadows that is causing some people to crash alot. It may even prevent you from logging in. We are aware of it and have a fix that we are testing that will be published first thing next week.

    The Work Around:

    - If you can get in game and have crashed previously and you think it is shadow related. Turn off shadows until we give the all clear.

    - Set shadows to off at Character Select before logging into the game.

    - Set ShadowDetail=0 in your VGClient.ini if you crash when logging in.

thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll give it a try.

sorry to hear you are having performance issues on your computer.

this is not the norm from my own observations.

  • RaavRaav Member Posts: 120

Did shutting off the Shadows fix your issue.  There is a hotfix going in early next week to address the new issues due to GU6.

I encourage you to post your info on the SOE Technical Forums.  Your case is unusual.

no, setting shadows off didn't solve it.

I'm beginning to track down the problem to a  registry mess-up; when rebooting, Event Viewer creates a save System dump event log and a .dmp file, and by checking at the Microsoft file association library this translates to a memory dump issue, which usually stems from a registry fault. This would explain the sudden reboot without any warning.

I run a registry repair program (tracked 181 faulty registry entries) and installed Advanced Uninstaller Pro to clean up any leftovers from the Windows (poor) uninstall utility. Lets see...

  • RaavRaav Member Posts: 120

I had that issue when I got another computer pretty nice set up(spec wise).  I got a DLL error.  I had to reinstall DirectX.

  • GaladournGaladourn Member RarePosts: 1,813

    Update

Fixing the registry seemed to work; at least I no longer get forced reboots.

VG still crashes occasionally, each time for a different reason (textures not loading leading to unrecoverable errors mainly - from what I can tell by reading the log file), and it did freeze once (which a lot of other people are also getting from what I hear).

So now my symptoms are not different from other peoples'  complaining of crashing often.

Crashing is the exception not the norm.  Another fix that may help is deleting your Cache Folder and re-launching.

Second, when you crash does it send your crash log to soe?

Perhaps the Hotfix this week will help you out.  Glad you fixed one issue.

I've never had many problems actually running the game, but the graphics, while technically of high quality, seem aesthetically stale.  There is alot about the game that is still quite interesting.

I love seeing all the mac bashing threads and then threads like this. I run vanguard on medium-high settings with no problems at all on my macbook pro : )

Only 2 gigs of ram, intel core 2 duo, ati x1600

    playing: darkfall
    waiting: earthrise

I agree, as I said my old PC, while technologically obsolete to run VG, at least was stable as hell; I only used to get a few graphical glitches now and then.

about the second question, no, it doesn't because I don't have a mail account configured with Outlook (it tries to send it with outlook)...

Try this one. It will take some time.

Also check you harddrive(s) through the option menus or chkdrv /s in command prompt. If you have had freezes and forced reboot you may have ended up with some slight file errors.

can you explain how this works? I've not been able to make a bootable CD so far...

  • OrphesOrphes Member UncommonPosts: 3,039

It's been awhile since I used memtest. But from what I remember is was only to use a program like Nero or alchol and burn the image and it was done.

I think I solved it; my RAM modules are Kingston HyperX D2LLK2/2GN which are supposed to run at 4-4-4-12 timings. I had set them at that speed when I first installed them manually. I went now in the BIOS and let the motherboard Auto detect them; it detects them at speeds of 5-5-5-16, so I let it like this.

So far I have not experienced either forced reboots or program crashes. Only once, VG crashed repeatedly when trying to enter a chunk to the south of Celestine Ward outpost (the chunk where the ship is located for the earring quest chain). This chunk crashed repeatedly when I tried to enter, so I assume it's VG-related (same with Tanvu where everyone keeps crashing, or are unable to log).

So far, so good. I hope that was it, and now it's solved.

    Great news.

If you do crash in the future, I do highly recommend sending in your vgcrash.mdmp and vgcrashlog.txt directly to vanguardcrash@soe.sony.com.

I did this once and within a week my crashing was gone.

    Happy hunting.

Go to Admin tools in control panel and find the event viewer.  Use that to see what may be causing you to crash so you can troubleshoot that area.  I'd also recommend using stress test software like Prime95 on your Pc to push it to check stability.   If you're using Vista on your new Rig make sure UAC is turned off.  Aero UI in Vista can also cause crashing in games. limit or disable that too.  Might be good idea to test your memory as well with memory diagnostic software.  Not uncommon for bad sticks to be floating around out there for sale.

it's OK, it was bad memory timings that made the system erratic. Besides, crashes due to RAM failure are not registered in the event viewer...

I've had similar problems with ram. Just out of curiosity what motherboard are you running? I know my old asus p5b delux had issues with my patriot ram. It would only run it at slower speeds if it ran at its manufactured spec it would get all buggy. My evga 780i runs the same ram at faster then mfg spec and its stable.

    Odd.

Try deleting your cache file and restarting.  This has done the trick for at least two of my guildies that had corrupted files.  Otherwise, tech support is very response.  You can email back and forth numerous times in a single day if need be to fix the problem.
