So...all you knob slobs that act like this is the second coming, are you going to actually go back and pay to play the game? I didn't think so. You made your mind up about the game and/or listened to your buddy say it sucked and jumped on the bandwagon like so many blind sheep that you would likely never play again. Funcom is one of the largest game developers around. A mediocre launch won't bring them down. IIRC there were NO MMO's that launched as perfectly as you all seem to think. MMO's are an evolving game genre always have been always will be. Some are worse than others at getting it right quickly, others aren't. Take SWG for instance. Good amount of subscribers then NGE then very low subs then constant evolution since and subs have actually increased quite a bit since. AoC had a rough launch and the dev's dreams were bigger than their means at the time. That certainly doesn't mean those dreams can't see fruition as it evolves. Oh God! Windows Vista had a bad launch MS MUST FAIL NOW!!!!!! Get a clue people.
The only thing that FAILED was you with this post.
With Gaute's resignation, myself and a lot of other people who bought the game and quit because of all the lies and simple fact that the game sucked and the game needing at least another year of development have finally been vindicated. All the people that were banned off of the official forums and the forums here are finally vindicated. It is a sweet day indeed when those that have been called trolls stand up with their heads held high and say, "HA, WE TOLD YOU SO!" because the company itself proved us right.
The sad part is, FANBOIS, we still love you. We are all consumers and it is us comsumers as a whole that got screwed. Now with all the drama over and the trolls proven right, we as a community can move forward together, supporting Morrison, and hopefully he can turn AoC into the game it should have been all along.
So this means you will start playing again? Again didn't think so. And I believe that most of you are underestimating the size of Funcom's bank accounts Hence the reference to Sony/MS. If anyone can point me to a SINGLE company that went bankrupt because their game launched poorly then I will retract my statement. It's all meant to point out that these screams of vindication are futile since you gain nothing because Funcom won't go bankrupt or whatever.
And for the record I DO NOT play AoC, so Funcom Fanbois I am not. I have just heard this argument from too many people about every single MMO ever released lol.

Sigil went bankrupt with the launch of Vanguard and assets were sold to Sony, debts paid off, and Sigil shut down.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
I think he was proud of the Shadowlands expansion though, that is considered to be one of the best expansions in mmorpg's.
Strange how differently people can see that. Shadowlands is often referred to as the expansion that killed AO because it totally changed AO from a cyberpunk dystopia into a world of swords and fairies. I think it was a case of trying to be all things to all people.
I wouldn't usually see swords and "fairies" if you want to call them that, as something fit in a sci-fi game, but for AO with SL expansion I think it works. It has to do with the mood of AO and SL and story. Then again I'm sure you are right in there being those that thinks it ruined the game for them.
It's probably been discuessed endlessly earlier, so I'll just leave it at that.
So this means you will start playing again? Again didn't think so. And I believe that most of you are underestimating the size of Funcom's bank accounts Hence the reference to Sony/MS. I'm not 100% on this, but didn't the company that originally launched Vanguard go bankrupt because the game launched poorly? I believe that they had financial problems before launch but had the launch done well I think the company would still be around. Again, my timeline might be a bit off, but I think it wasn't until the company closed down that SOE stepped in and took over.

that's why all those games fail or stay non-profit/f2p and dont apeal more than fanboys. after wows success mmorpgs are targeted at a mass market (else you wont get investors), not the fanboy niche anymore. sure games are allowed to evolve, but not from unplayable crap to playable crap - or from good looking crap to brilliant looking crap with advanced physics but shit buggy gameplay. a good base is needed to evolve or you just vanish, which in aocs case means extinction.

Nevrax, the original developer of Ryzom went bankrupt in 2006.
Tulga Games, original developer of Horizons, in 2006.
Maybe there is still some hope for Funcom. Now if only EE would resign and they would get a PR manager who doesnt blatantly lie with every breath.
Hmm frankly I would be extremely happy if FC will die . They deserve at least this for doing what they did on purpose, if nobody has the time to sue them and get our money and time back.
In fact if I'd known where these guys and Tahitoa lives I'd like to find them and express myself directly too.
They should've thrown in the towel after Anarchy Online. That game had HUUUGE potential and they couldn't do anything right. Can you imagine that title in the hands of a competent, respected developer? Now, they went and trashed an entire franchise, much like SOE did to SWG.
"But you know... I'm going to be a bit cheeky now, but if you've been to McDonald's for four or five years, and had your burger and your Coke, sometimes it's great to just have a great steak and a glass of good wine." - Gaute Godager
It's good to see he takes responsibility. Unfortunately his poor decissions run deep into the game and that will mean that AoC will not easily be turned around.

Karma at work, folks. Enjoy it while it lasts.
The difference is AoC has only been around for 4 months not those other games which were released for years and AoC also sold more boxes so it has a larger box base to draw from in gaining back players not to mention the rumors of losses were heavily exaggerated. So what I think will happen is that now that they have turned the corner we will see AoC turn the corner and AoC has so much going for it as computers get better and server technology gets better they will be able to alleviate the few problems AoC had and as a result it will improve to the point that it is the #2 MMO in North America!

Actually no. Sigil was originally partnered with MS. However they bought back their stake so to speak and sign a deal with SOE to publish. Later SOE consumed the assests of Sigil to keep everything in house. Much like SOE and others have done with many smaller companies. Selling out is not going bankrupt.

Hmm your name says a lot...
I dont know what level you are in AoC but the game has much more problems than technical.
Now cause I have abs nothing to do in AoC I started to play a free mmorpg PerfectWorld; guess what - no bugs at all and it has a lot of interesting things. In many ways its much better than AoC and its free. Ah and it seems is has much more players in Asia than wow . eq, aoc and all rest together.
PS If you guys are bored try also Dreamlords - also free and a lot of fun too.

DUDE, just be quiet now. Doing what they did is called going BANKRUPT. SIGIL was broke. McQuaid couldn't raise any more capital. If you were following the ordeal, Smed did what he did the way he did it to protect Brad McQuaid, his two decade old friend. Smed has also said if it hadn't been for McQuaid, he wouldn't have gotten Sony involved with the collapse of Sigil. Notice, Smed let PE/P2 sink and didn't go in and take over Gods and Heroes:Rome Rising and Star Trek Online. Sony had pre-order boxes on the shelves for G&H and the game was a month from launch when it got shut down.

This makes the irony even sweeter. You dont play yet you knock those that did and found it wanting?
first the financial officer quits, now the Gaute. With their new stock price low......i really am starting to think that funcom will not exist in it's current capacity within the next year.

O.K. I will give you that, Sigil would have gone bankrupt had Sony not bought full rights to VG. Still didn't go bankrupt, just sold assests to avoid it. And the game is still sold. Either way my point was that screaming vindication is futile, because those that paid for the game (ME) and didn't play the game (ME) don't get anything out of the fact that this guy is resigning from Funcom. Resigning. Even if it was pressured he will get some kind of bonus/earnings for leaving. If he were fired it would have made a slight bit of diffrence. True vindication would have been if there were a CA suit against Funcom for "False Advertising" as it were and early adopters were reimbursed for their losses. Nothing is really fixed, it's just a changing of the guard.
Does anyone know about how much production costs were for AoC? Also, is the 700k subs correct for initial copies sold?. Thats 35 mil at 50 bucks a head, if it is. Did they clear production costs?

Not even close. A rep from MS said by the time DX-10 and the XBox 360 versions roll out, Funcom will have invested nearly $100 million in AoC. The gaming conference in Dallas a couple months back they were talking to do a game the size of WoW today, would cost a company $100 million easy from scratch to finish. Prices for technology and labor are out of this world. That is why you have companies going down the User Created Content road because that means A LOT less cost to the developers.

Ya the 700k was for retail/e-tail units sold, not active subs. Active subs were extremely high, then fell to ridiculously low levels. Hasn't really recovered in any way since. I doubt they cleared production costs, as most devs will throw everything they can at getting something onto the market. Be it ready or not.

Um, they didn't just sell assets. They shut down operations, and Sony hired some of the people back to work for them. Not all Sigil employees survived the changeover. In other words, Sigil no longer exists as a seperate company. It is owned by SOE. SOE owns everything having to do with Sigil.

Um, they didn't just sell assets. They shut down operations, and Sony hired some of the people back to work for them. Not all Sigil employees survived the changeover. In other words, Sigil no longer exists as a seperate company. It is owned by SOE. SOE owns everything having to do with Sigil.

They don't exist I know. Never said they still do, hence why I said I would give him that one. They sold rights before closing not after. This kind of thing happens all the time in just about any area of commerce. Big company buys little company, little company is dissolved. And you contradict yourself by saying Sigil doesn't exist and then saying it is owned by SOE. And this still has nothing to do with the point I was trying to get across.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Shannia and MadMoppet are both correct.
Maybe there is still some hope for Funcom.
Now if only EE would resign and they would get a PR manager who doesnt blatantly lie with every breath.
that's why all those games fail or stay non-profit/f2p and dont apeal more than fanboys. after wows success mmorpgs are targeted at a mass market (else you wont get investors), not the fanboy niche anymore. sure games are allowed to evolve, but not from unplayable crap to playable crap - or from good looking crap to brilliant looking crap with advanced physics but shit buggy gameplay. a good base is needed to evolve or you just vanish, which in aocs case means extinction.
Nevrax, the original developer of Ryzom went bankrupt in 2006.
Tulga Games, original developer of Horizons, in 2006.
Karma at work, folks. Enjoy it while it lasts.
It's good to see he takes responsibility. Unfortunately his poor decissions run deep into the game and that will mean that AoC will not easily be turned around.
if anyone can do it, it'll be Craig though.

PS If you guys are bored try also Dreamlords - also free and a lot of fun too.
a new hope.. so glad this guy bailed.

first the financial officer quits, now the Gaute. With their new stock price low......i really am starting to think that funcom will not exist in it's current capacity within the next year.
