First MMO that Competes with WOW IMHO....

I liked AOC but the zoned world with loading screens was something that I never could get past no matter how much I liked the game. Well Warhammer on the other hand is amazing. Not only is it fun just like WOW was 4 years ago when I started playing it but the things I didn't like about WOW are fixed. I never played battlegrounds or did PVP in WOW because it was such a hassle and the only time a tried a few years back took me multiple hours just to get into them. Warhammer on the other hand makes it as easy as clicking a button to get into the Que and then it seamlessly transports me there and back.

The graphics while not breathtaking are better than WOWs and I don't have any lag or stuttering even though I am sure there is a lot of optimization that is yet to be done. Overall I am amazed at how smooth things are going and how the servers haven't been down for hours on end like they were with the AOC early access.

Mythic gets it right again!  They were pretty much an indie gaming company when they made DAOC, I honestly consider them to be the only company that really knows how to make MMO's.

Looking forward (cautiously) to: Age of Conan, Dark Solstice, Armada Online.

    Will soon try: Guild Wars

Overall: Amazed and bewhildered at the current sad state of the artform of gaming.

So far it looks like Warhammer has 500k active accounts in NA/Europe compared to 5.5M active accounts in Europe/NA for WOW.   Time will tell if Warhammer gets up there with WOW, but for now it looks like WOW's numbers haven't dropped at all, most of the players seem to be coming from AOC or else haven't been playing a MMORPG in awhile.  AOC is the only game that saw it's number drop signiacantly this week.

I'm more curious in WAR's lasting appeal to be honest, I'm not quite convinced about that one yet no matter how dynamic people feel PvP can be.

Interesting statement have a link to back that up?

As for the op, I don't buy it. WOW is known as the king of PVE, WAR is all about PVP. That's two completely different pools of players with entirely different interests. Why would those enjoying WOW leave to play a game that diverts from the path they sought in WOW in the first place?

AoC has done nothing but drop in population. And WARs PvE beats wows anyday as each quest leads up a  story path where wows have nothing to do with anything. Only difference is WAR has the PvP side done better as well. So its PvP based it still has a crap load of PvE content and better content then wow.

WoW Didn't Launch with 5.5M costomers..infact they didnt' even have a Million until nearly a month or two later.

Compare Launch numbers for pete's sake not 4 years worth of build up.  It took them 4 years to get a total of 5.5 M NA / EU customers up until the last expansion they barely had 3.5 Million NA/EU users.

btw WAR's pve atleast follows a storyline so everything ties together....since when did delivering some pies mean anything to the non existant storyline of WoW.  Personally I hated WoW's PvE at Launch, After Launch and right up through its expansion which is why I retired 2 years ago and never looked back.

Usually your last statement is true...PvE raiders / dungeon runenrs probably wont like WAR but for people who like PvE and wanted to try PvP that wasn't a useless gear fest will probably really like WAR.  I know I do..I typically hate PvP...but i've done nothing but enjoy the open and scenario pvp of WAR.  I think its because it affects the overall game...taking those lands matters, holding a keep matters, tearing down the enemy's city actually MATTERS and affects things.  From a PvE perspective its rather fantastic.

AOC's PvP patch will probably destroy it in the end....their flagging system is a bad rip from UO and it did't work there either.

Hehe, didn't take long for the valiant WoW crusaders to jump in here to defend its subs.

Is that 500k speculation or fact? Please provide links, I'm just curious..

Anyway OP, glad you're enjoying it, but in my opinion, WAR will never compete on  WoW's level. It will probably have an easy time getting to #2, and I think that's what their goal has been. It's a PVP game, and unfortunately, people will still cling to dry old' raidtastic WoW with WotLK and it'll remain dominant. Honestly, it's best just to ignore it and cheer for WAR making it to #2.

No I dont' actually ... EQ1 had Raids but it wasn't a grind mechanic and it wasn't soemthing everyone had to do in order to 'complete.  EQ2 has it but again same as above.  WoW on the other has it and told people "learn to raid" because thats the only PvE end game they had until peple bitched up a storm enough around the time of Expansion 1 by then it was to late...the last thing I wanted to do was play dungeoneer all the time.  Its still obvious to this day that in WoW if you want to have things to do in PvE and keep up with everyone and see the end game content you have to 'raid' or 'dungeon' crawl because thats all Wow truely is at end game for PvE players.

I hate PvE Raiding and WoW lives off it..there for I hate WoW...WAR has none of that...I can participate in everything if I want too and if I skip on something its not a negative to my competive status in WAR.

Try finding a group in WoW without any "epics' or even 'welfare' epics and see how much luck you have.

The WOW numbers are based on the last 4 months of WOW (since the launch of AOC).  WOW had a very slight dip when AOC was launched, but recovered from that by July, and now is slightly ahead of where it was when AOC launched.   WOW did not have any drop at all this week.

AOC had a significant drop this week, but got a small boost yesterday (but overall, they are still down significantly for the week).

The Warhammer numbers are inferred from the WOW numbers.  WOW had 5.5M NA/EU subscribers in April (reported by Blizzard), they are now at the same level as they were then.  And Warhammer is showing 1/10 the activity as WOW.. therefore  550k players.

Warhammer WILL BE the #2 game, no doubt about it, and it may reach 1M subscribers if endgame isn't too repetitive.  I think the games compliment each other well.  Warhammer is 75% pvp / 25% pve.. wow is the opposite.   I am a WOW player, and I love the fact that warhammer basically forced Blizzard to add Lake Wintergrasp, which is a pretty amazing zone.   PVE is the biggest part of my game, but the time I do spend pvping, it will be much more fun with Aerial combat and player driven seige weapons.. things Warhammer doesn't even have.  If not for Warhammer, Blizzard would've stuck with WSG/AB type games.. which ironically is what Warhammer decided to copy in their scenarios.

I would say its more like the closest thing to WOW minus all the PvE content and more battlegrounds.

ROFL, okay so now this has to go to the gutter I guess?  Sorry to disappoint you,  I''m not going to bite.

We aren't talking about LOTOR, they're not the game with 10 million subs. Besides if you're not taking part in PVP aren't you basically diverting from where mythic tries to guide you through questing?  I agree WAR has very good PVE for what it is, the PQ's were great and much more accesible than say WOW raiding. However, from my experience it seemed most of the questing streamlined you into PVP in some form.

On top of that, PVE servers, WAR doesn't have them (at least) as far as I know.

I was worried about how this game was going to be perceived by the general population of players, WoW and otherwise. I've played so many MMO's, including WoW and I never found the PVP to be very interesting. The battlegrounds were always meager at best in my opinion. Last night my guild and I got together and we ran the Khaine-scenario a few times, and we just had a blast.

I've enjoyed the questing a lot too, and the fact that I earn titles for silly things and serious things. I played in closed beta, and thought at some points they had a lot to work on, but it seems like a really good launch compared to many other games.

    I've been enjoying it immensly.

Ahem! Check this site.  It's over 9 on the ratings on it's first day?  1.5 million pre-orders bought and paid for by customers?  The fact that they are cloning servers as we speak to meet the demand due to queue times?  Folks, this game is off to one helluva start and I'm glad I'm there to see it hehe.  WAR is what WOW should have been before they made it the mindless grindfest that it is now.

I only played for about 2 hours~ last night but a lot of that was getting used to the game.  My initial impression is that its very similar to WoW, more than any other MMORPG i've played thus far.

What worries me is i've read the classes aren't as unique as WoW's, and classes aren't very personably reactive like in WoW's.  I've always been more of a fan of the possibilities of being good/better at your class than others through skill, reactions, etc. than reliance on focus firing tactics or having a healer behind you.  I don't multi box, and i don't play with the same people everyday, i play these games pretty casually, so its more difficult for me to bring support with me everywhere i go, unless i meet people ingame for that, or things just naturally occur that way in the RvR.

My mind is very open to Warhammer still though.  I want it to be a very good game, i hope it is, but reading some of the reactions really scares me because they seem to be the core things i look for in a good game.

I don't understand this logic at all. I found the scenarios to be nothing more then unorganized WoW battlegrounds. How do you find WoW's battlegrounds meager but WAR's one scenario a blast?

(btw that scenario you played is the one I have played the most, but I found it to be an unorganized zergfest mostly, and found it quite subpar when compared to any of the WoW battlegrounds. )

Moot point, AoC was over 9 when it launched too with a lot of pre-orders. Means nothing.

You don't seem to be thinking about things realistically. WoW has been out for close to 5 years right? WAR is technically releasing TODAY, and somehow has 550 k subs? That's insane when you think that those subs were basically just prerelease subs.

Now, I'm not stupid enough to believe that WAR will ever get to 10 k subs like WoW, but that's still impressive to me. Also, it is worth noting that WoW will probably never lose a great amount of subs strictly because of the way it was built. People have invested literally HUNDREDS of hours of their lives to raiding and to gearing their characters, and that is not something I'm betting they're willing to give up so easily....though it is totally pathetic.

Learn how to read a press release.  They didn't sell 1.5M preorders.. they shipped 1.5M boxes to retailers.  They never specified how many pre-orders there were.

Warhammer is off to a great start, but your numbers are still wrong.  It's much closer to 500k sold so far, and probably will reach a million within a few weeks.  There are a lot of people that got burned with AOC who will wait a few weeks after launch to make sure they aren't buying a lemon.

WOW is a total grindfest.. At endgame, you can grind Arenas, Battlegrounds, 5man dungeons, reputations, 10 man raids, 25man raids, Heroics, dailies, (soon acheivements and Lake Wintergrasp also).    I mean.. WOW is such a grind they had to invent like 15 different things you could grind.   /sarcasm   Anyone who says WOW is a grind is focusing all their attention on one small area of the game and is not doing anything else.   If you play the whole game, there are so many things to do it's not really grinding.  Think about it.  In wow you can do 1 arena match, 1 battleground, 1  5man instance, improve a reputation, work on a craft skill, do some daily quests and top the day off with a 10man guild raid.. ALL IN THE SAME DAY!!!  How in the world is that grinding?  That is gameplay.

And you are comparing it to Warhammer, which nobody has even seen endgame, and will certainly have fewer options

I don't think you can compare the WoW release period to now.  WoW at release was pretty split between EQ2's release and WoW's release.  The MMORPG market at the time wasn't as desperate for something big and new as it has been of late with WoW dominating everything that has come out.

Today, new MMORPG's that are advertised and developed as the 'next great thing' are getting boatloads of initial subscribers because of the many who are jaded or fed up with WoW for whatever reason(but aren't canceling their WoW subscribtions until they know for sure something else is better with Wotlk to be released soon), or those that play the 'older'/less successful games looking to jump to the next great thing.  It is a big reason why AoC had such huge early success, it was the hunger for a new top MMORPG by gamers more than anything imo.  AoC turned out not to be remotely close to the game many people fanboy advertised.

WoW also added an influx of new mmorpg players that were once probably more fps/rts based players.  So many WoW players never played an MMORPG before WoW its pretty crazy.
