Darkfall sure does have a select following, people who understand what a real MMORPG is supposed to be. And not being confined to linear world. freedom of choice if you like, people with imaginations. Oh, does that make me one of them!
dont you love it how all DF supporters see themselves as the only ones with good taste and knowing what the best mmo is... if the community wasnt so rotten id get excited about the game too ;/
heheh totally agree.
Yeah, Darkfall seemed like a cool idea until I found out what its community was like. Time to get back to the warrior priest, I guess.
Those that you're talking about actually are a small percentage of the overall community and I agree that they give people a bad impression about what the in-game community will be like. One thing to consider though is that in a game like Darkfall if you don't like someone's attitude the solution is very simple. Kill them and strip them naked and if they come back for more... do it again. Those tough talking forum warriors will change their attitudes in a hurry once they are subjected to repeated gankings for running their mouths in game I'm sure.
As for Blizzard taking over the game...no thanks. Aventurine is only interested in making a fun PvP based game whereas Blizzard would want to turn it into a watered down version that my grandmother and my 4 year old nephew could play without getting their feelings hurt so they could reap maximum profit. Really this is nothing against Blizzard as SOE, Mythic, Turbine, Funcom as well as some other big name developers would do the same thing in todays MMO marketplace.
Blizzard don't work that way, youre probably thinking off SOE or EA. Blizzard makes their own game. SOE might well do it, they bought Vanguard of Sigil... but they messed iy upbefore launch.
I think what the op is saying is that due to Blizzard's deep pockets and solid repuation, they could bring Darkfall to completion and successfully publish it. As far as Blizzard not know what to do with Darkfall? I think you are actually being a bit linear about it. You are seeing that they have the most popular game and that it is linear and therefore that's all they can do. What does Blizzard do well? Not make linear games per se but Blizzard can very adeptly see what makes a game successfull and hone in on those attributes. I have no doubt that they have the brain power as well as the resources to make a sandbox game. But I don't think the majority of people want them. That is another discussion but from all the empirical evidence I've seen, that seems true. Now, that's not true from the vocal people on this site! If one were to solely follow the opinions on this site, one would think that a pvp sandbox game would make millions upon millions. And yet it's not to be found (as of yet). I will be very curious to see, if Darkfal does come to completion how it does.
Well written response and I concur wholeheartedly.

I am just saying DF has tremendous amounts of potential and success just drooling from it just that no one has heard of this company and indy companies seem to fail, if you got a company like blizzard to back it or publish for it, this game could do just as good as WoW.
Tremendous potential... There is a graveyard full of MMOs filled with games that have developers that promised the moon and failed to deliver anything close to it. Common sense and history say this game will be more of the same.
No offense meant, but there is little reason anyone should invest in this game.
I am just saying DF has tremendous amounts of potential and success just drooling from it just that no one has heard of this company and indy companies seem to fail, if you got a company like blizzard to back it or publish for it, this game could do just as good as WoW.
I am truly sorry. But any game that has full loot has very little potential to have a big following. If you consider EvE a sub number of say 150k subs a lot. Then you are out of your mind.
People do not like to work for their items and then loose them. And by this game supposivly being skill based, the people that spend days grinding out skill levels will be the top. It will be exactly the same as say Player Levels and gear grind games such as WoW.
With FFA PvP, the lower skilled players will be ganked. And they will be ganked all day long. There is no if ands or buts.
Not only that, with a game with FFA PvP and trying to balance out PvE with it, there will be very very many balance problems. You will get so many nerfs/buffs that varry from pvp and pve its going to be horrendous.
After the game is released for about 6 months. Very few gamers will stay for more than a months time, because they do not like getting ganked and fully looted.
Yes I guess it has potential. But skill based games are just the same as level based games.
And these so called Sandbox games only appeal to the minority because you guys want a virtual world. Most want a story. They want some direction but they also want freedom.

Think of it as life. You have a goal. You have things you want to do or want to acomplish in your life. You have a direction your going in.
Now in a game were there is no direction a Sandbox game people have to find things to set as goals. Finding a goal in a virtual world is extremely hard compared to real life. There are limits in a video game.
Yes real life has its limits but its nothing compared to a video game. Sandbox players need to realize that nothing will compare to what your looking for. Real life and a video game are two completely different things and not everything that is possible in real life can be put into a game.

EVE has more like 250k Subs and for a game from a small indy developer that is a huge success. WoW is the exception not the rule and if you try to compare every game to WoW's sub numbers than every game produced since is a huge failure. We know this isn't true. Indy developers don't need a million or more subs to be a success because they don't spend nearly as much to produce their games as a large mainstream MMO company does. Darkfall will be considered a huge success with as little as 100k-150k subs as this will allow them to show a profit within the first year. Smaller investments require smaller returns.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here. First of all, skill based is NOT the same as lvl based. In a skill based game, an uber mega character does NOT have 70 (or more) times the HP of a newbie character. A good hit can still kill/hurt the veteran. In a lvl based game, attacking a veteran is just 100% pointless for a newbie char. Not evel 70 lvl 1s could take down a lvl 70 in WoW. I doubt a vet in DF will be able to defeat 70 newbs.
Second, I don't see why PvE and PvP should be so hard to balance vs each other, if both follow the same rules, as opposed to most other games. In a game without lvls, a mob doesnt need to have 32783912792 HP etc.
Third, I don't agree that non-pvpers will avoid a game like DF just because there is FFA. I'm not a pvper and I really look forward to this game, because to me it's exciting to know that the world is actually dangerous. People can actually hurt me and I have to be careful. Same goes for full loot. My stuff is going to be worth so much more to me, knowing that I can actually lose it. That's basically what gives stuff its value. If money in real life was guaranteed, it would be worthless. There's no way that I'm alone thinking along these lines. Anyone who has a background in true role-playing would want FFA-pvp even if they're not going to play a murderer, right?
Fourth, and most important, your ideas about sandboxes (And real life as well, apparently) are WAY off. Who says a sandbox can't have a story? Real life, the ultimate sandbox, has tons of stories. Most people in the world are involved in some kind of events on a daily basis, right? And who says you can't have a goal in a sandbox? Of course you can have a goal. The difference is that you can CHOOSE your goal, as opposed to normal games where someone else has chosen it for you. Goals are pretty much the same as in real life. Get rich. Become famous. Make friends. Build a huge house/castle. Acquire knowledge. Collect stuff. Become powerful. Govern others or serve a master. Or just become really really good at playing the game. Normal games usually have one, pre-determined goal. Sandboxes have many.
With all the hype of previous titles and let downs I do not understand the rebid fanboi following this game has. Can someone explain to me why this game is deserving of my time?
Are there any reviews of play time I can read or video's of game play? I saw the recent video that looked a little staged to me. But I mean all the comments about vaporware and what not. I can;t really get behind any title until I get a chance to read reputable reviews or see actual game play footage.
What I do not understand is why everyone here atomatically assumes that if blizzard wanted to buy out df that they could. The Aventurine staff has put a lot of work and dedication into this game. Also, with it being their only game they would be incredibly foolish to sell it as that would mean the end of their company.
Conclusion: either the op is trolling (most likely) or just plain did not think about their idea.
I am a skeptical supporter of DF. I am not a fanboi nor a troll. I seek the truth in every discussion, and I am truly sorry if I mistakenly state a fallacy.
The OP isn't trying to troll he/she has a dream that the only way DarkFall will not become VaporWare is that a bigger company gobbles it up. Or at least that is what i've gathered and thought he was meaning. I will just be happy when the game comes out so i dont have to be sucked into these posts because they are so hilarious. Darkfall Releasing makes me LMAO.

I think the reason DF is getting so much hype and that people are going nuts about it is that it's promising so much that no other game has. Other games have some of it, but this game's feature list just includes so much that makes it the complete opposite of all modern MMOs. Add this to the fact that a lot of people are getting really frustrated with the way MMOs have gone during the last five or six years and you have a good solid recipe for mass hysteria.
Personally I'm not going to speculate on the chances of DF ever seeing a release. There is close to no info about it other than a feature list, 1 video and some screenshots. Aventurine sure has an unusual way of doing things. On the other hand, most video games in history have been completely unknown until they were on the shelves so.. I'm not really sure what conclusions to draw. With the scarce info we have, I think DF sounds like a lot of fun, but the truth is that no one knows jack squat what it will be like.
@ Goldyknight: my point was that the op, and most others in the thread, assumed that Aventurine would be willing to sell df to Blizzard when this would mean the end of their company.
(Sorry about the troll claim)

I don't want anyone buying these guys out. I'm tired of goons in suits stepping in and firing up the wrecking ball. Now granted, Blizzard is da stuffs but still, I don't want a Wowfall. Keep your grubby paws off my game, plzkthxbai.
