I play both male and female characters in games. The way I look at it is a MMO character is not an extension of myself but more like me roleplaying a completely different person. Whenever I get the urge to play myself I just go outside and do stuff in the real world. I play games to escape being myself for a little while and sometimes that includes female characters. Now I'm not one of these guys that tries to fool other guys though. If asked I will tell them I'm really a guy as I don't need any boyfriends. I just do it because sometimes it's nice to see how the other side lives once in a while.
I only did it once with a human priest in WoW as it just seemed to fit the character and i must say that i did get a whole different reaction from 'male' characters. I think that a lot of players have a problem detaching the gender of the on screen character from the guy/gal that is actually sitting at the keyboard ;-)

100% agree. Especially as a theatre minor in college, I never felt I WAS my character.
I can say that playing a female, I get more free gifts, assists, and am not seen as a jerk when I do things selfishly or am insulting (as some of my characters are). It's also harder to shake off the opposite sex with a simple "no" or "go away". As a male, I'm expected to be more confident, calm and forgiving in difficult/angry situations. If there's any flirtatious gesture, "Thanks, and please don't take it personally but I'm not interested in a relationship" is more than sufficient. It's sad that our real-life gender expectations play over into the game, but I guess many people can't separate themselves from the reality they know. It's usually easy to spot a guy playing a girl character many times though. They're way too inviting and have no self-respect for their character's body/appearance. Men seem not to be able to disengage themselves from their own libido. I don't know many girls who play guys. A few do, but they don't appear to find it as enjoyable as playing someone they wish to be. These are all generalizations however, and there are exceptions to the rule surely.
I also seek out the most odd-ball comination of race and class: Gnome warrior, Hulking Towering Priest, or an Elf that doesn't cry.
Anyway, who doesn't play of 'a' (isn't 'the' a better way of putting it, or are there other genders, currently unknown to me?) different gender. Not to mention running around naked...Yes, I really do need a new (good) game, for everyone's sake.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
I usually play as a female toon, though I make no effort to ACT female. I don't really like it when dudes try to make you think they're female IRL when they're really a dude. For no other reason then...well....its just a really odd thing to do lol. I guess it makes me question their motives for such behavior, and their honesty.
But my reasoning is simple. most games, you're in 3rd person, from behind, while you play. So if i have to stare as a butt for a few hours, it should at least be appealing to me.
Strangely enough, I will roll a male toon if I can customize it to look like me. Now that I am getting older and a bit chubbier, that's getting harder to accomplish lol.

Games need to get rid of the 'naked' character altogether. It's just plain annoying for everyone. In fact, make them in tattered clothes and have it look like they haven't showered in a week with flies all around. Then when they get money, they can buy their shower, new digs, etc. Also, I would certainly be more willing to give money to someone looking in dire straights than a bikini dancer. I feel bad going to the beach these days. I keep thinking everyone is level one and has no money.

Well put, that’s pretty much the way I see it also. It doesn’t make sense to me to play MMOs with ANY toon as Myself. There are some that play from that perspective and that’s fine, whatever works.

Very true, I ignore any ‘come on hits’. If they keep pestering me I just tell them to go away or I’ll Report them and that works well.
It's sad that our real-life gender expectations play over into the game, but I guess many people can't separate themselves from the reality they know.
Not sure what you are driving here, but there are some players who have not reached the point of knowing and accepting who they are or how to properly relate with others, Male or Female.
It's usually easy to spot a guy playing a girl character many times though. They're way too inviting and have no self-respect for their character's body/appearance. Men seem not to be able to disengage themselves from their own libido.
Younger guys (teens to be specific but it can continue well beyond 20) are the majority. A female toon sporting MAX cup size, running around naked with a large SWORD are dead give a ways for example.
I don't know many girls who play guys. A few do, but they don't appear to find it as enjoyable as playing someone they wish to be…
I think you would be surprised the percentage of female gamers that play male toons. I didn’t realize until using Vent. and other voice chat.

1.) Just meaning that people template themselves onto their character often times and don't seem to be able to place themselves outside of the character to play them as separate than themselves. This complicates trying to play the opposite gender.
2.) So true, so true...though am disappointed in the games that give the gamer no choice whereas "all characters are a perfect 10!". In the brief time I did play, City of Heroes was interesting because you could make your character ordinary or even a little undesireable if you wanted.

Back in the day a buddy of mine played EQ with me, he always played female human and half elves lol.. We had a rather large community and for at least 3 years I was the only one who knew he was really a 40 yr old, slightly fat, bald man. He used to get a kick out of getting hit on by male players in game, it was sorta frightening.

a) Gender-locked Classes; Myth War comes to mind, if it's a choice between a female class I like, or a male class I think sucks, I'm gonna take the girl;
Or b) the male avatars are fugly. This is someone I'm gonna be looking at for a good period of time, I don't wanna spend that time with someone who looks like he should be playing the role of 'Ugly Man in Background'. A good example is Neosteam, I thought that the male humans all looked like Ganon, so I wasn't about to play those.
Anyway, I've been switching it up recently, if the game meets neither criteria of 'a' nor 'b', I', probably make a second character of another class and the opposite gender. Take GW- I made a male necromancer, (I look oddly like Light Yagami, but hey, whatever..), and a female elementalist (ended up looking like the protagonist to Claymore).

In WoW, at least, the female avatars are mucyh easier on the eyes to watch on your screen constantly.
