I was watching a video of Darkfall and the person made it sound so great I wanted to try it. But what do you think?
I know it says it's revolutionary and all but really I think what it is, from all my readings, it's just the cramming of the best ideas MMORPG designers have came up with. I mean Flyff was revolutionary when it came out because it included flying. And WoW too, because it was so sucessful. So how do you think Darkfall will do when it's finally put out on the market for everyone to see and judge?

The short answer is no one knows if its all that because no one has played it yet, the even shorter answer is every MMO has said it was revelutionary and the fans have hyped it's potential. I don't think there is a long answer hehe
Venge Sunsoar
Even with a perfect release it targets a handful of smaller groups in the genre instead of a handful of major ones.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Well that guy is at least 50% right because he predicted aoc would suck, hehe.
Yeah this game could be revolutionary, every game makes it sound awesome and want to make people try it.
Im sure they will let people in on an open beta of some sort.
I think this game has potential for greatness, there are plenty of people who prefer gameplay over graphics.
Im sure everyone can wait as obviously they have waited for... how many years? lol..
I played pretty much played everything and this game sounds exciting, lets hope our inner gamers dont get too dissapointed.
Its easy to pee in the toilet, but most of us dont.
Nobody can honestly say if DF 'is all that' yet. Untill we see an actual release with all the promised features it is not all that. AoC was supposed to be all that...hyped up with many promises it failed on. Now I am not saying DF will be the same...but untill we see/play an actual game, with its promised features, it's not all that.
AoC have great graphics, thats all it takes to get people hyped about it...
Its easy to pee in the toilet, but most of us dont.
Yes its targeted at a specific group of player the one that hasnt had a game made for them in many Years , but its stil a very very large group, more than enough to support the game . 150-250k subs would make the game a success and there is more than enough people who want everything DF says it will deliver to hit that mark .
To the OP.
Its funny you say "its just the cramming of the best idea's mmorpg designers have came up with" cause that exactly what Blizzard did with wow and look how it turned out . Its all in how well it comes out and if they do what they are saying .
Have to wait and see what DFO has to offer us, if it doesnt pan out , something has to step up, a game like this is exactly what many people want , maybe Mortal online can step up in DF's place if it falls to earth.
well, from my reading of darkfall, i fore one cant wait to play it.
Its revolutionary in the fact that most mmos now adays just appeal to the carebears who want it easy. things like ffa-pvp, full loot, and no instances are what is really drawing me in.
if they follow through with the claims, then it absolutely will be all that. will just have to see.
To be honest revolutionary within the mmorpg industry doesnt specifically mean it is destined to be a hit.
But I have alot of faith in this game, it is revolutionary in its features and it has many features that havnt yet been done in an mmorpg. I have faith that they are going to deliver a feature complete game because they have been working on the game for absolutely ages. Also the devs+articles that have been on the official forums have been very prominent about the progress of the game.
"Even with a perfect release it targets a handful of smaller groups in the genre instead of a handful of major ones"
I think it could be agreed that catoring to the majority is why we can't have nice things.
Agreed.
Anyway, even EvE online with its rather stilted gameplay (still enjoyable, not bashing) has 250k subscribers... certainly only a niche compared to 9 million for WoW (many of which are asian players).
250,000 * 14.99 = 3,747,500 a month. So, let me ask you, is 3.75 million a month enough to say you've got a successful MMORPG?
Its funny, the idea of what makes a succesful mmorpg nowadays seems to been hit in the face multiple times by WoW. It depends what you believe makes a succesful mmorpg.
I think an mmorpg's subscription numbers is only a limited part of what makes a succesful mmorpg.
What makes a succesful mmorpg is whether the game has managed to give the community something which they want and enough of them want to play it because of this, even if its just 50k subscribers (aslong as its enough to keep the game running).
Darkfall should be succesful because its offering the community a niche game with features that quite a few people within the mmorpg community are looking for. If darkfall manages to stand on its feet (get enough income to stay alive) it, in my opinion, should be noted as a succesful mmorpg regardless of the ammount of subscribers a game like WoW has.
Are you sure ?
The exact same was being said before UO, EQ and finally Warcraft were being released.
The main argument being that the majority of players wouldn't stop playing Lara Croft's & the top FPS to switch to a mmorpg.
Mmorpgs were supposed to be too complicated , too time consuming etc.. to appeal to the masses.
What do we have now : millions of regular mmorpg players. So much for conservative homemade analysis.
Darkfall, Mortal online, Earthrise are breaking the rules, just like UO, EQ & Warcraft did. They might do something big.
Asheron call III, EQ III or AOC II surely won't.

I don't get the feeling that they are just a bunch of features smacked together.
To me it feels like these devs played some of the best MMO's and got frustrated with the dumbing down and linear gameplay that has plagued this genre for years.
I get the feeling that they actually did something about it, instead of just waiting/hoping on the next mmo.
It's actually inspring to me, because I have always been the type to just move on when my fav games were trashed. Maybe now I can enjoy the genre again. I enjoyed UO/AC/SB dearly but each of those lifespans got shorter with each game. It's to the point now where I play something and hardly make it past beta or the trial month.
So as long as this game delivers on half of what they want to give, I can see myself getting lost in Agon for a very long time. I say it's about damn time for an MMO to consume me once again. If I am that lucky then this game will definately be all that... and then some.
"What makes a succesful mmorpg is whether the game has managed to give the community something which they want and enough of them want to play it because of this,"
And this in turn leads to greater subscription numbers....
Is it just me?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
You are wrong... go read up on the game before making such an inaccurate statement and i'll informed at that.

The short answer: YES! IT REALLY IS!
oops wrong thread
Nice post templarga.
I am quite optimistic when it comes to Darkfall i believe that they are onto something with this game and there is a decent ammount of people who do actually like alot of the features in the game, but at the same time you have to realise that, yes, it could potentially fail. I thought it was good that you brought up how if they games subscriber base is too low then they may try and add things and perhaps dumb the game down in certain areas to draw people to the game. Well the company sure isnt the type at face value to do something like this, they are quite hardcore when it comes to what they want in the game but at the same time you never do know do you.
I think the games subscriber base will probably be something like Eve's but hopefully it will get the marketing to get people to realise the game is out there alot sooner than eve did.
....I thought this thread was about Darkfall, not Warhammer.

Haha. Post +1

Funny you dont mention that people talked about, UO, AOC, WoW, EvE, EQ. But DF is just a bunch of Ideas taken from other games as well. FPS action, DDO, Water battles. POTBS and Voyage Century, there are games that have player looting and FFA pvp. so nothing new here but no game has all of those together.
But anyays ways to be on topic. WIll this game be all that and a bag of chips. I can't really say you all will just have to find out when it comes out.
