Out of genuine curiosity. I want to know if somone can give me one PvE based game that is out of the vaporware state (as in it has to have as much chance of coming out as D&L.) That is revolutionary.
Because so far the only games I see as revolutionary and that actually will be released in this year or 05, are Mourning, D&L, Darkfall

LOL. I had a good laugh from it. smile actually... but anyway.. here's my opinion on this supposed rebirth of mmorpgs: if there is such a black & white "rebirth" or next generation then it will soon die off like all the other mmorpgs previously (of course they haven't died off - they've just died down). The day an mmorpg excites me, is the day that pigs will fly, trees will walk, and intelligence be found in the world. also a day that my wallet will be emptied... I say - give mmorpgs 10+ years and I'll see what comes of it. until then, i'm your fellow quester for the ultimate mmo.

Tabula Rasa has been Richard Garriot's pet project/baby for the last 3 years... that and NCSoft seems to be the type to take risks (such as in CoH's case). I don't see it going down at all.
D&D Online has major brand recognition behind it and i doubt it'll go vapor as well.

I thought Tabula Rasa lost all funding/progress/any news of advancement.
And i'm pretty sure NCsoft knew that City of Heroes was not a risk, but rather EQ in supermans clothing.
As for D&DO, so far, besides a few new tweaks on some already either old, or overhased concept idea's on new MMORPG's, it doesn't seem to be anything special.

EQ2 and WoW have the same graphics and basic interface at 1st glance.I think this is more along the idea of people having bought into the marketing blitz that these 2 titles will set a new standard. The only thing ive seen in the last few years that sets a new standard is the ability to hunt down other players in SWG.Im not talking open PvP here just a one on one fight to the death.
These 2 titles are going to be HUGE dissapointments.Remember the hype behind SWG?This is the same thing happening all over again.

I really enjoy reading these comments about how these games will be huge dissapointments because none of you have played it, so none of you know what it is like. Its really fun to come from actually playing the game! <cough>opps almost said a little bit too much there<cough> And then seeing these people post about how it sucks and won't have feature X, then i go look.........hey it does have feature X!!! And then they say that Y will be repetative.........then i go look........Y is not repetative!!! Then they say that A, B, C features will be nothing new and same as old games........then i go look.......hey guess what!!! A, B, C are all NEWER!!! BETTER!!! features........Then they say that rating Z, will not represent game D, then i go play game D, and it goes above and beyond hype Z.

nah, EQ2 is mostly a way to clear the board of dealing with hundreds of patches and starting fresh, but with everything theyve learned. WoW seems like blizzard is just trying to cash in on the rpg market. Overall they look awesome, and playing them will be fun, but it doesnt really add anything new.
But hey, thats just my opinion.

Tabula Rasa is fully on track. There's even a new MMORPG.com interview right on the front page here with Richard Garriot. They haven't been listing tons of info, but their policy is to not release anything that won't 100% guaranteed make it into the final release. Also, its a year from release, no urgent need to build up hype yet.
I do think City of Heroes was a risk... a mmorpg without crafting, loot, or pvp? That takes balls, if anything.
And for D&D Online... well i guess i'll list some unique stuff like i did with TR.
No wide open virtual world. When you travel outside a city or dungeon, its a red line, Indiana Jones style. Not instant travel, because there will be random encounters, and points of interest you come across. But for the most part, travel is severely shortened.
True action combat. Reflexes will come into play, requiring actual manual dexterity for once other than clicking a target. Tumbling, climbing walls will all be possible. Creatures will actually fight in a certain way, such as a minotaur... it paws its feet, lowers its horns and charges you. If you can trick it into running into a wall, it falls back stunned.
No exp per mob kill. Only exp for completing missions. Therefore there is no need to kill endless hordes of mobs... being able to avoid conflict will become more important.
Smaller, more intimate world. Not saying its definitely a good idea, but no other mmorpg so far has been designed to have about 500 players per world.

Haha. You notice that if you listen to what you said, it sounds similar to someone selling coca-cola, and using the same ingredients as the coca-cola company. But taking a bottle of it, splitting it, and diluting it.
Which is pretty much CoH, a watered down MMORPG really. Its like what I said, taking a bottle of coca-cola, pouring half of it into a cup, and filling the rest with water. Question is, was it guts, or was it just laziness? Because instead of innovation or adding even extra content, it seemed more along the lines of diluting it.

So in other words, baldurs gate style? You have a small area, that have different zones. when you travel outside of amn, its to points of interest that were opened up by certain encounters. During that travel between points you can be way-layed by bandits, meet certain characters, etc.
Interesting concept, but I think it's removing a large part of what make MMORPG's MMORPG's.

Creatures will actually fight in a certain way, such as a minotaur... it paws its feet, lowers its horns and charges you. If you can trick it into running into a wall, it falls back stunned.
This almost sounds like a fighting game, similar to say, Street fighter, Mortal Kombat. Or as i've heard, the new prince of persia games (wouldn't know, my computer can't handle the new prince of persia. Runs 1 & 2 just fine though.)
Now if this is true, kudos to them. But I've read their description of combat system. And unless you've gotten an article that clearly states this. It may be mis-translated. Because well, this is D&D, rolling of the dice and all that. Less of actual need for interactive combat. I'd more of see something like this fit well in MEO, and not D&DO.
If its as you interpret it though, definitely a feature that is something to look forward too.
No exp per mob kill. Only exp for completing missions. Therefore there is no need to kill endless hordes of mobs... being able to avoid conflict will become more important.
I dunno. Sounds more along the lines of what WoW does. Except even more to the extreme. In World of Warcraft, no one really camps mobs. Or kills monsters that aren't part of the mission. Because exp is all gained, and all about the tasks. So unique? Partially. Something I look forward too? Not really. Why? Because I think it'll take the magic out of quests. Quests won't be epic, because to level up, you'll need a large amount of them. And thus less time in making them epic, or fun.
Which I'm assuming unless they have some type of next generation quest generator that somehow makes all quests unique, and interesting. Will be like alot of other MMORPG's and just be "tasks".
Smaller, more intimate world. Not saying its definitely a good idea, but no other mmorpg so far has been designed to have about 500 players per world.
Thats all i can think of for now.
Well, AC1's servers in the early days usually had about that many players. Not intentional though.
I think it'll be a detriment though. It may keep the community small. Which at times is good, and others times not so. I think it's going to take alot of the MMO out of MMORPG. The pot isn't gonna be stirred. No new blood. May get a little stale.

Well, about CoH, that was just a point that despite all the obvious shortcomings, they went through with it. And Tabula Rasa has so much more to offer than CoH, that i don't see them pulling out and canceling it. ---- I think Baldur's Gate would be pretty similar. Haven't seen it myself yet though. Personally i'm not a fan of running around and exploring virtual environments, so it might just be me. The pen and paper also skipped out on the hours of realistic travel, shortening it to the encounters though, so its mostly just following the style of the original material. ---- I forgot where i heard it, but i promise you i'm not lying about the minotaur. Other creatures behave realistically as well, such as setting a kobold on fire. The thing will light up and run down a hall screaming. As for combat itself, here's the excerpt from a Gamespy preview:
" The build we got to play mapped attacks to the left mouse button, and the guard move to the right, which, when used in conjunction with the movement keys, allowed characters to tumble about the ground to dodge incoming attacks. As this would imply, combat was very fast-paced, much more closely resembling an action RPG than an MMO. Rhythmic clicks of the mouse seemed to be more effective than wild mashing, and the combos that the melee characters had exhibited a satisfying level of oomph. " ---- Not sure about quests... but i believe they won't be relegated to tasks. There are some that are quick and designed for the casual, but there are others that require hours or days of effort. And since each one is instanced, i believe they can do a whole lot more in making each quest interesting... and something you want to do; not just to advance, but simply to have fun. ---- Not sure about the smaller world either. Its a wait and see... but all i was getting at was that D&D has enough uniqueness, that if everything were to work as the developers imagine it to work, then it would truly be a next gen. game.
