Lack of Peripheral Vision = Immersion?

EauF5EauF5 Member Posts: 4

"What camera view will Darkfall have? Darkfall will have a first-person camera view. Probably the most debated issue in our team, with strong points both for and against. We settled for first-person view because we believe this view gives the most immersed gaming experience, the most nerve wrecking combat situations, and the most beautiful view of our landscape and dungeons. o.O

Counterstrike, Quake and Unreal work pretty well yea? Oh and RPG games with first-person views that work great: Arena, Daggerfall, Ultima Underworld, Deus Ex."

I don't understand...

Darkfall will either have first-person view or third-person view... And they're not sure which one it will be, like they said. Ain't much to understand...

So immersion is being able to see around corners/objects without exposing yourself, and making it impossible for people to sneak up behind you?

Third person is only imeersion breaking, apart from being able to constantly check out your armour and clothing.

if it is than it would go well with the real world sneaking and hiding etc,  there is no traditional invis stealth mechanic.

so its cool knowing what way someone is looking and sneaking up behind them etc.

in some ways it is more immersive and cool, but I also think I would miss the 3rd person view

if it makes it more fun, im sure i could get used to it

Maybe a fixed 3rd person view behind your character, not too far from it so you can't really see behind, but you could see a bit more to the sides, with the option of making it transparent.

I'm downloading it from abandonia again. Had so much fun playing it on my old computer.

yeah that might work, good idea

I played original EQ in first person.  I actually liked it but I think that was because I hated the 3rd person camera in EQ.  It didn't swing with your facing changes or if it did I never figured out how to make it do so.

First person view wouldn't be a big deal to me.

First person view is realistic, like real life, therefore more immersive. Third person view is a matter of convenience. Personally I prefer a game that offers both, but first person only works for me.

I prefer third person view. For me, RPGs are about playing someone that's not me, that looks completely different and runs around in funky outfits.. what's the point if I can't see myself? :)

They can put mirrors like in Duke Nuke'm.

I used to like third person better, but between mount and blade's first person (the best way to play the game I tell you, take a two hander and hold a nord battle line against a charge of knights in first person? I don't care who you are, that is immersion) and various shooters, and especially vanguard's well done first person view, I'm a convert now. Its just a more fun way to play, if the game is designed with it in mind.

I think what view type is best would depend on how a game plays, some are better suited to first person and some to third.

First person is definately more immersive for me, I've never had a "jump out of my chair" moment in a third person game, first person combat really makes you think your fighting for your life rather than someone elses.

I guess you never played the original Alone in the Dark... it gave me several jump out of my chair and hide under my bed moments :P

Hmmm, perhaps a Gears of War style over the shoulder view might work.

Of course, it is easy enough to put in a static 'vanity camera' mode (button mapped) that circles your character when you stand still if you are into viewing your gear while still showing the environment or for screenshots.

The reason for the first person veiw (everything but melee) and the close (over-the-shoulder) view (melee), is in order to enhance the natural stealth. If your character is facing one way, than someone behind you knows that you can not see them. Thus, they know that they can try to sneak up on you. In a game that wants to enable sneaking, without a magic invisibility button, this kind of view is essential.

Edit: if you want to see your character so badly, view your character in your equip screen. You can't see yourself IRL so seeing yourself in game detracts from immersion, imo.

Wasn't it 3rd person view for melee  and 1st person view for ranged ?

I too played EQ pretty much always in first person so i am fine with it.

Plus it makes sense for this game.

  • mortharxmortharx Member Posts: 293

Well since 3rd person is built in already it won't really matter what view they decide is used for what.

Someones gonna make a mod to enable whatever view you want whenever.

Aventurine has stated that they will not tolerate third-party applications. They have enabled alt-tabbing though, so ventrilo and other programs that work entirely outside of the game should pose no problem.

Third-party applications cause significant imbalances and exploits and allow for bots and boxes. How is that fail? Just because you can't customize your minimalized UI, you think that the game has failed. There are very good reasons why this was done.

Mods are an essential part of the gaming community. It allows for customization of your UI, group bars, and countless other things that give the players a sense of freedom with the game.

It also helps the developers know what would be a good change to the game from the majority of the playerbase using certain mods.

If you are all for freedom in an MMO, and in Darkfall, than why would limiting mods bring you said freedom.

With Mods come the inevitable cheat mods that give unfair advantages to those that have them over those that do not. In EQ2 something as simple as a auto heal can give an unfair advantage which was done with one of the UI's. Some will show percentages and such that were not meant to be shown. If you allow modding even of the UI guess what, the good comes with the bad. DarkFall's UI is what it is and for MMO's that is how it should be. They have designed it how they felt it should be. Something as simple as adding to the radar can have a very adverse effect on stealth. Since there is no invis those that wish to sneak up on people will need actualy skill to do so and I don't mean just a stealth skill. I mean they will need to wear dark unreflective armor or unreflective armor that matches the eviroment around you.

Sorry this is going to take actual skill to play and the normal "Easy Mode" methods are out and I say good riddance. You want it marked on your map, your going to have to go out and find it and mark it on your map yourself no UO auto map or EQ enhanced map FTW!.

In any case those looking for a skill based MMORPG aren't wanting this allowed and aren't angry that it isn't so it's one of those things you either have to deal with or move on. Besides the UI will be pretty customizable. You can drag things where you want them.

if it keeps the game fair, and the minimal ui works, not being able to use ui mods is not that big of a deal in my opinion.

Im sure if enough people petition for some UI feature, the developers will try to make it happen.

keeping the client as unhackable as possible is very important to keep the world fun and immersive.
