I love housing and crafting furniture to my home. That's why Eq2 fits me like a glove =p Im having a blast there just collecting materials and crafting stuff for my one-bed room
The speed of the mole and the power of steel is my weapon
I think it is a bonus, all games could benifit from housing, I am not sure that allowing player to place their house in the world is always a good idea though, as it creates lots of problems, but instanced or zoned housing could work in most any game type.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
I have to say housing is a nice plus in games. Having houses placed in the actual world can kind of irritate me if it's not done correctly. I did like the housing system in SWG but then it seemed all me and my friends did was sit in our houses and that got old. When housing is instanced and in a special housing area like say FFXI it's nice because you can have all the cool things like furniture and stuff and it's a nice a place to keep items you aren't using.
For me it all just depends on how the game is setup and if housing works right for that game. I wouldn't play a game just because it has housing and not having housing would not keep me from playing a game when it comes down to it.
I'm not against it. I'm all for giving people options to do more then one or two things in game. I figure if they give the option to make a house then it will bring more people around and make the world more alive and populated. It could bring a whole new dynamic to the game with builders or crafters needed to make them. This would in turn requre some sort resource gathering and could evolve into some sort of economy. I say put 'em in. For me, it's not a make or brake thing. I'll play games regardless.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I don't find it "essential", but I believe it is a very important plus. Basically, housing gives players more to strive for, provides a place for players to show off their spoils, and in the end increases the longevity of the game. Think of WoW where the only think you loot is gear. Now add non-gear stuff like paintings, trophies, relics, special house blueprints, etc and you have a much larger variety of items that players can treasure hunt for. Again, it adds to the depth and longevity of a game. Of course, as can be learned from SWG, you need more then a basic sandbox to keep people playing. You need content to keep people playing and filling their house with "priceless relics".
I had to go for essential. Sometimes it is nice to have a place to call your own and sit around with friends. It is also nice to sit around with those friends and not have to worry about people running by, seeing a group there and yelling "RAWR U DUELZ ME!!!" A place of your own to crash while in game and visit friends, craft when you feel like it, and stash extras and such without having to worry about beggars closing out your bank window with trade requests.
It is one of the 1st things i check on a new mmo....does it have player housing and if so what type.
I'm not saying i wont play a game if it doesnt have it, but it is a large strike against am mmo in my eyes if it doesnt have player housing. It was one of the sticking points that helped me play EQ2 all these years. Its why in SWG i was a master Architect/Merchant. It is why i want a housing plot in Vanguard so i can build my own home. I even decorated my apartment as best i could in Anarchy Online.
I have played and enjoy/enjoyed many mmo's over the years...but the ones with player housing always stand out as my favorites over the others and get my $$$ for much much longer cycles.
Now that being said, i will play and sometimes love mmo's without housing. But in my eyes the developers have an uphill climb to get my $$$ if they dont have at least basic player housing.
For me, a game can´t really be perfect without player housing. I don´t care if I can place it wherever I want, but it must be non instanced. When thinking about my time in SWG, i realize how much of the fun who had never been possible without the non-instanced player housing. Houses also makes you feel as a part of the game world, rather than just being a visitor in a world owned by npc´s. But of course, it need to be more than just player housing to make a good game.

Housing is totally useless unless you are able to break into somones home and steal things.
If housing, then please real housing. Read: A game where you can settle down somewhere, and actually call that place your home territory. Kind of like in Eve (common question when you meet a player: where do you live), or Wurm (same thing).
Im going to say essential. I am playing WOW at the moment and it has really annoyed me that Blizzard keep saying they are working on player housing (they said that when WOW was launched). The moment Darkfall comes out I am off to there simply because it will be a sandbox and will have non-instanced player housing.

If theres going to be a mmorpg that changes everything it wont be Darkfall, that game will be another Dark n Light.
Housing is cool its like AA without needing a point system.
I'm playing vanguard right now and the housing system there is awesome.....I havent felt the urge to "build" a structure like this since the UO days. I got me a tiny little plot of land in one of the player housing areas and its really cool seeing the varying stages of construction the houses around me are in.
Housing in UO was king......it really adds something to an mmo to have structures you can own. This one of the reasons Vanguard makes me feel like i'm playing in a place rather than a game == because I kinda sorta pretend own a part of it.

its highly dependent of what game your playing for example for WoW i wouldnt ever have it, the game doesnt fit with it.
With age of conan i would say it adds a nice bonus
For WAR for example i wouldnt have it, guilds controling a tower or area is your home
I'd love to own a house in AoC
I opted for bonus because although I prefer to have housing I'm not going to ignore a game or refuse to play one that doesn't offer it.

same here.

Same.
If it was in Warhammer... and you could destroy it if your in the opposite team, then yes.... it would be awesome

I granted Guild House only.

Are you a PvP'er by any chance?

it has to have it or i get burnt out within the month, it has to be seemless into the world tho

I had a really cool house in UO -
Bases in COX were cool
I even kind of liked the housing in lotro
Housing is a good money sink
