I like PvP also, but don't think it should be in DDO and actually quite glad with their thoughts on the impact (none) it will have upon launch. As far as PvP being RP related, you are quite wrong. As far as being old at 25 I am almost a decade older, and I know MANY ppl in their 40's who play regularly as well. DDO will attract a large portion of of older gamers, therefor I commend DDO in remaining faithful.

I've played PnP D&D since the Whitebox came out. I've had a Dragon magazine since it came out, still have my 1st issue mint. Even though some on this thread have stated how they played PnP D&D and has some instances where PvP was allowed by their DM, that is not how the game was designed. It was designed for groups and community. I applaud them for sticking as close as possible to how D&D was meant to be.
I personally have never enjoyed PvP play. It gives me no satisfaction in knowing that I just ruined somebody else's day. I also get no satisfaction from being slaughters by much higher level players or by groups. Yes, in UO you could start a guild of PK hunters and things like that but it's much more enjoyable to most people to not have to worry about other players. Example: You're fighting a monster in a PvP game. It's a long close battle. After 5-10 minutes the monster is almost dead, but you're almost dead also. You see another player running up, wouldn't it be nice to know that he's running up to heal you and not have to worry about crap he's going to kill me and this mob and take all the loot that I just earned.
It's just my opinion that PVE in a good world with good Devs that update the content will always be 1000 times more enjoyable than PVP.
If you disagree with how D&D was meant to be played then go to the Lejendary Adventures website and ask Gary Gygax yourself. He's a regular on the forums there. Sorry but I don't have a link handy to post.
Originally posted by Otto_Manic Yet another idiotic post- I don't like either of those games. What is up with you people? You get all upset, panties in a twist over someone who enjoys dynamic combat. If you're so in on PVE, why don't you just play a single player game, no monthly fee required! If it's because of the socializing part, run the game in a window and alt+tab your way back and forth between a yahoo chat room. You think PVE is the apex of MMO's? You must've not really played any long enough to approach the end game. You know what used to happen in EQ? People got so bored we would PRETEND to get mad at each other so we could /duel and get some excitement. I remember being level 40+ watching a large group of evil players slaughtering my city guards and yelling out obscenities at all of us and we couldn't do a damn thing about it, cos they sure as hell wouldn't /duel me. Yeah, that's a pretty awesome ROLE PLAYING experience, isn't it? Oh, and when that got old, people would pay lowbies to do nasty cyber things with their avatars for gold. I remember one time, we had these two level 3 HE chicks and we gave them a gold each to RP a bisexual encounter. Heh, you shoulda seen the stuff we made them RP out with my wizard's staff. You're right, PVP only detracts from a game.
Ottos a pediphile,he gets newbs/kids to perform dirty tricks with thier avatars,ur one sick sob, delete this post admin and i'll reportr u to the police, ottos alrdy been reported.
I simplly dont like PvP, i have played high end DaoC, It was cool..pvp is fun, dont get me wrong..but the BEST part of a game is working with your friends, to beat a dungeon, Or keeping together and pulling hunting off...Sure you can do this on pvp, but i just found beating the computer Funner, IMO,
I will be watching this game close..to see if its gonna be any good, graphics look awesome, but that means nothing when you have a boring game
Also..did anyone else feel like they coulda answered the PVP thing in 3-4 sentaces, instead of like 100 repeating themselves 4 times, on each topic
As far as I'm concerned, I don't think PvP is essential to create a good MMORPG. Far from it actually, because if we take products such as DAoC, SWG, Lineage II, ... as examples, it's easy to see that extensive PvP almost always has a negative effect on the depth of a game. Now of course, this is a matter of taste, but I prefer a game with more content that allows for better role-playing, than "a fantasy version of Unreal Tournament".

im just glad to see the game being made in the first place, pvp or no pvp doesnt matter at all as long as they do a dam good job of turning the pnp into something graphic that works well. also i do think they are correct in saying that the pnp version is dominately not something that was played to kill other players unles it was some sort of special event where you got a chance to duke it out in a couple of gaming sessions if that but nothing more. and then going back to the group effort.
I have to agree with crunch...Im a fan of PvP while i dont understand what happened to so many people that think its all griefing and slaughter, i do understand why they dont like PvP. There are many good games for PvP'ers Mourning, coming out soon, Face of mankind, coming out soon also, Darkfall, trials of ascension. There are many of these, look around and youl see there is a place for you, and its not in the mass marketed games. But these are not games for griefers either, we shall hunt you down and kill your pigs if you grief. Who cares about this one game? Turbine has never truly supported PvP play and i doubt ever will, it takes a mindset of it from the start to get it done right. While some may disagree with me, i do think Shadowbane did if fairly well, but what do i know? Im a advocate for Permadeath
Actually turbine made asherons call, and it is bigtime pvp.Shadowbane was,and is the single most waste of time in gaming, look at the player pop, nothing but orientals now, same thing that happened to ultima, lineage 2 etc. They hack and do nothing but grind for hours and then grief,...ya,my idea of a funtime..
FIrst of all, Lineage 2 is a horrible example for PVP. The person with the levels and the gear wins, hands down. Tactics dont matter up to a point. The grind is HORRIBLE. I got to level 50 and I quit, I spent all that time on one char, 8 hours + a day and it was a total waste of time. At that point I couldn't bring myself to load the client. Sieging was no fun, we always won. Tactics didn't matter, when I quit someone had finally beat us over a castle while I was out playing golf. Apparently they'd finally massed enough 50+ to zerg us. Tactics dont matter in games that focus on PVP. Anybody who tells me so I'll laugh and you can pretend they do, only a small fraction of a point do they matter. Only in small group clashings, 2v2, 5v5 do tactics matter but lets be realistic, how much tactical prowess can a person muster with 4 attack powers? Its all spamming soulshot and hoping the other guys not a 70 SR or your toast. Usually breaks down to who has there skillset mastered the best, whether it be attacking at certain ranges, power chains and connection speeds. People can all that "skill" i prefer to call it practiced luck. Eventually its who has the most people, they win.
D&D is about hanging out with friends and killing some evil doers. Not Hacking limbs from relatives or siblings. Im not one of those guys who likes to play mmo's to talk in a fairy accent or something but truth be told, im glad DDO wont have PVP, cause ive tested and played in far, far to many games where PVP ruined them. I play WOW for pvp, ill play this to hangout with the guys I used to play D&D with back in the day who've moved on, so we cant get together and roll the dice, but we can game online.
Personally I think this game is gonna either be canceled, or not proffit. Its gonna die. But would be nice if it does pull through, as I have fond memorys playing D&D with my friends.
If there is no PvP, Does that mean there is no Player damage from AoE spells? So I could drop a fireball right in the middle of the party with no ill effects??
No pvp, good save me the time of following this game. If you make half a game, youll get half the crowd. Besides this game is a dollar short and 3 years to late.

Maybe so, but we won't really know until the NDA is lifted or the game is released, will we.

The trouble with PvP is that you ALWAYS get idiots who spoil it for those of you who do like true PvP
Thats the way of life
As for those of you who are bad mouthing the game based on no PvP content - go elsewhere there are lots of PvP games you can play
Those people who want fellowship based game play with more emphasise on community - play DDO
Simple and easy

Well I will still give D&D a look when it ships just for old times sake

Why would you say that? With the D&D license, I doubt it will get canceled. Anything's possible, but I'd say it is unlikely at this point.

Wonder how they are going to handle that?
I'm playing EQ2 beta without any PvP and it's definitely not worthless.
