Heh, and for those concerned that SWG will be shutting down:

    The Fate of Galaxies

The amount of energy, resources, and enthusiasm being thrown at The Old Republic raises one obvious question: What about Galaxies? LucasArts was emphatic about the fact that there's enough room for two viable Star Wars MMORPGs to co-exist.

"We're looking to continue to support Galaxies with high-quality updates on into the future," said Jake Neri, producer for LucasArts' online division. "We're focused on a chapter release around Hoth, where we're re-creating the battle at Echo Base. We'll allow players to get in groups and jump in and just participate in a very high-quality battle. We've just released a trading card game inside of Galaxies, and fans are eating it up. Looking into next year, we're going to revamp our droid system with something called droid commander." Neri also said that SOE Austin was working in conjunction with LucasArts on further additions to Galaxies for years to come, with no end to the game in sight.

yeah and we should believe them because theyve been so honest in the past ?

Did you expect LA to come out and say "yeah we know SWG sucks and thats why were backing Bioware's new baby. SWG is finished so you'd be a fool to renew that one year subscription."

SOE is so committed to SWG that they "promoted" devs to DC MMO. They have a skeleton crew running that game now. They are so confident that the game will grow theyre going to allow free character server transfers because nobody will likely need it

When they do announce the shutdown it will probably be 2-4 weeks out. Your consolation prize will be a credit from SWG towards station pass games.

Unfortunately, SWG doesn't fall into the "viable" catagory.

I don't think people were very concerned with whether they would shut SWG down because of The Old Republic, but that they would shut it down because the last remaining few that actually play SWG would leave for the new game.

And you are also taking the word of people that have done nothing but lie to you in the past.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

LOL I can hear the naysayers screaming from here Obraik.

"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

How many are going to be left to play SWg?

    Let's see, the choice is:

1.) Play a 4 year old buggy mmo with a skeleton crew developing it and helmed by SOE.

    Or....

2.) Play a brand new mmo based in a time with freedom from lore restrictions, with a massive development crew ( hell, 12 writers alone ), and made by Bioware who are known for quality in their games above all else.

Actually Bioware is making the game, not SOE. And ANYTHING bioware could make now is better than what they turned that abomination into.

I bet Bioware's 12-man writing team is larger than the entire development team for SWG rofl.

The chief reason I often heard from SWG players continuing to play that abomination was it was the only star wars mmo around. They will have a choice soon enough.

You can bet players arent going to be renewing 3-6-9-12 month subscriptions.

Looks like we have another WoW clone in the works,

"While there are some tasks that cannot be completed without the cooperation of others, the majority of the game can be accomplished by playing alone."

Yup, cause thats just what MMOs are all about. Focus mainly on story? Instances, good so far. Having artificial party members, being based on current MMOs with "innovations". Yup, sounds like we'll be leveling up. Wonderful. /sarcasm.

No, we have a KOTOR clone in the works.

    Dear Bioware,

I'd like my game now please.

    THANKYOU!

  • All I can say is if they pull this off this game will be incredible.

Is it Pre-CU?  No.  Nothing else ever will be.

But is this concept every bit as ambitious as the Pre-CU was with respect to how groundbreaking it is, as it's never before been tried?  You betcha.

And only Bioware do I trust to pull it off.

PS:  And you don't have to deal with SOE :)

You realize KotOR is a single player game right? What possibly logic would lead you to believe that that makes a good MMO? You're probably among the same crowd that thinks Oblivion would make a good MMO.

Did you read the statements? They said it themselves "It'll be similar to current MMOs with a little innovation."

That's not ambitious at all. SWG was a bit ambitious. This will be more of the same, but with a twist. Pretty much the story of any MMO released since WoW.

i just have one question and i know its gonna piss some people off

but please!...Can we have just ONE thread about this game where someone doesn't bring up SWG??? I don't care about what happened to that game. I DO care about whats going to happen with The Old Republic.

Bioware and SOE are not the same company

and this is not, nor was it ever planned to be, the same game. Its not gonna be a rollback version of SWG.

Its its own game, in a completely different time, its not the game that old galaxies fans feels that they are owed.

Lets just talk about The Old Republic, without the comparisons.

    Actually yes I am

For all we know this game is going to be Guild wars in space and frankly I don't care. I'm a huge fan of the KOTOR games and honestly I never even expected KOTOR would be biowares  mmo (see my previous posts on the subject). So no your "WoW clone" comment means nothing to me, I just want the next chapter in the KOTOR story.

Yes, during character selection you will align with the Republic or the Sith Empire. In addition, throughout the game you will also be faced with many decisions which can change your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force.

Ahhhhahahhahehehehehhhoohohoohohahahahh.... I found this quite juicy.

Everything else wasn't exactly the most revealing, but this gave me a couple of clues; 1.) the game will be at least partially faction-based. 2.) your character is not forced upon factions such as in WoW, and with this, I assume we will have full contact with everyone playing, not just with our factions. 3.) We will all have some connection to the force. Three very big things if you ask me.

That's about it. The multiple worlds comment also gives a very good hint that this game will have a sandbox style and that we can go anywhere we wish. I just found it interesting that we can assumably change factions over time according to actions... this brings up a whole list of ideas in my head. What else will we be able to change with our characters over time? Are there only two factions or could we end up being somewhere in between? How much of an effect will our characters have on our world, is it static? Do players play any effect on anything that takes place in the game?

So far so good is all I can say. It is indeed actually sounding like it's in a pre-CU mindset... not that I expect it, but so far it seems at least far from what WoW is (and in all honesty, that's all I care about). And to some of you guys saying the graphics look bad... from the tiny things I can see, they look pretty damn good from an MMO perspective. The only thing that saddens me, though, is the indication of class-based system over skill-based system. Both work fine for me, though I'm worried at how limited it may be in how it functions. I'd hope for something sort of like skills within classes to differentiate a class from another, but we'll see what they do.

The video interview on gamespot Bioware says specifically there arent "factions" in the game. There are two sides, the republic and the galactic empire but there it gets more complex

You can be an evil dark-side character but work for the rebel side. Or you might be a good person working for the galactic empire.

And you can change your status based on your actions. You could start out evil but work towards the light side and vice versa.

    sounds very complex and interesting

Possibly become an outcast of either side resulting in a no affiliation status until you repair the damage done with your original side or join the opposing side?
