@15 years old, do the parents share part of the blame? of course. However a lot of people are in denial in this thread about the addictive qualities of MMOs, especially WoW which is designed around giving player carrots on a stick and getting them hooked. Some of us can control the amount of time play and balance it with real life, but when you talk about young teens and even younger, they may not have developed that sense yet. This is where the parents should step in. Tenspotting's analogy of it being the car's fault if someone drives for 24 hours is just ridiculous as the car doesnt had addictive qualities and that is just someone being stupid. FACT is that MMOs, especially ones designed round the WoW model, have serious addictive mechanics that younger kids may not have enough sense to balance. cliff notes: parents played a big part in this screw up, but the MMO was hardly blameless, if anything its 50/50.
Why is wow to blame? Why not the brand of computer he was using? Or the chair he sat on for the 24 hours? People who want to blame anything other than the parents and the kid are why there are so many lawyers in the world. They are looking for deep pockets and the bleedings hearts who think the game should be at fault are why society is falling apart.
Hey, maybe it isn't blizzards fault, they ate a really defect brand of baby food when they were kids and that's how wow was born. Wake up people.

Defensive about your precious much? Obviously didnt read my post.
If you think WoW played no part at all then i feel bad for you and you may be next!
MMO developers certainly hold some responsibility in making games that require endless hours to compete. They build an extremely addictive product and should really be forced to contribute to the funding of some online addiction assistance programs.
Much the same reasoning tobacco companies were forced into funding anti-smoking initiatives. MMO gaming companies should be forced into funding similar programs for their addiction.
That being said the majority of the responsibility rests solely upon the gamer and the parents if the gamer is under 18.
24 hours isn't anything- though admittedly I only ever did this once staying up for a Vox and Naggy raid. I can tell you going to get corpses at 6am in the morning isn't fun...(in fact I straight logged off)
Anyway, are mmos to blame? Not likely but I'd point a finger at mmos and their practises. I know there are a lot of kids getting hooked onto mmos and it really isn't a good thing. When people have to invest hours just to get any sort of progress is it any wonder kids and people play too long.
Some people might take exception to my post but being on a mmo site you aren't going to have very many people say it how it is..
Stupid kid and parents that don't care. That's it. No need to ponder whom to blame. It would be so easy to always blame the product and supplier, whether it be games, tobacco, drugs etc.. No-one is forcing you to use it. And like he didn't know that human body needs to rest sometimes.
all i can say is blahahahahahahah!!!!! my boss told me the other day that his kid was obsessed with WoW and that he is failing all his classes and shit cause thats all he ever does is play wow.
so he took the game away from him and the kid went fuckin berserk LOL he's 15 also. I think WoW needs to be shut down by the government for the sake of our youth and future generations

I have to agree.
What the heck has happened to parenting?
When I was 15, in no way, shape or form would I have been allowed to do this. Also, I had "chores". Not "chores light" where you get an allowance for doing the dishes.
Actual chores where there was real work involved. So I don't believe I would have had the time to do something like this.
In any case, part of parenting is teaching your children how to make decisions and drawing boundaries for themselves.

A 15-year-old boy in Halland was taken to hospital after having spent a day in front of the new World of Warcraft. Food-and lack of sleep in front of the computer led to that he was cramping. Now warns his father others.
- I want to warn other young people and parents, "says the father to the Evening Post.
The boy and his six friends met on Saturday night to play the nysläppta Wrath of the Lich King. In one day, it was only two hours sleep and a small breakfast in front of the computer. At 14 o'clock on Sunday, the boy collapsed.
"We were terrified proposed"
Seizures reminded on an epileptic seizure as the family alerted SOS. The boy was taken by ambulance to Halmstads hospital where he received his fluid and nutrition drip.
- We were terrified proposed, but he is out of danger, "says the father of the newspaper.
The diagnosis became the boy was eliminated in a combination of concentrated gaming, sleep deprivation and poor nutrition. The boy had to stay overnight and take back their lost sleep.
Must play less
Now, the two parents that the boy must limit their time in front of the computer. They have talked with friends who also will cut down on their computer gaming.
At the same time, teenagers around the world to play World of Warcraft as never before. The latest version of the game expected to hit all-time Sales for the game.
Don't think he got much injury from that. Just a lesson in how the body works

I definitely see what you two are saying, and in my OP I tried to explain that the boy and the parents carry significant blame for this. Maybe 50/50 was a little off, maybe more like 60/40 but its all subjective. I think maybe i just chose 50/50 to get the point across that people saying "lol blame it on the game is so stupid the game didnt do anything" are just fooling themselves. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that WoW is designed to keep people playing and contains intended addictive habits that are much more addictive than other hobbies may have. When you combine this with the young age of the guy who probably hasnt matured enough to balance his time (obviously) and the parents who aparently had no idea what their kid was spending all day doing...it makes for disaster. Wasnt there a story about an asian couple who let their kid starve in the next room or something after a long gaming session? The world is going insane, but thats nothing new
So if he did this play Darkfall it would be Darkfalls fault?
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

You can't blame parents anymore either. Society is the reason kids are the way they are now. I mean even when I was you (which wasn't that long ago) parents were not fearful of punishing their child in public. Now you have to keep an eye over your shoulder for some loon that is just waiting to slap a suit on your face for even threatening to punish the kid.

Is all over the swedish newspaper, a 15 year old kid did a 24 hour gameing session in WOTLK.. Seems like he is ok now but there is lotsa whining about MMOs here. Doesn't the parents have any sence today? My parents would slap me silly for that. For you that can read swedish, here is a link:www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/recensioner/spelnytt/article3788342.ab I like MMOs as much as the next one, and Im in excellent shape but I would never do a 24H anyways, I mean it isn't fun once you get really tired.
Damn WOTLK is that good. Makes me want to try WoW out..................SIKE. I could barely give WoW 10minutes and he gave 24hours eh.
Look people you guys and gals need to stop thinking a 15 year old needs you to hold there hands. At 15 you know rather or not if you should play 24hours straight and if he didn't, he does now.

A child is hospitalized after playing WoW for 24 hours straight.
A child is found dead after running away from home after his parents took away his favorite game.
A child shoots his friend and blames a video game.
I'm seeing a common item here... "A child". We can do our best... to watch our kids, to stop our kids, to teach our kids...
"But I just glanced away for just a second"... "He was here just a minute ago"
Within those moments, after we have made our choices, the kids make choices of their own. Sometimes those choices lead to horrible ends... but the choice was still the child's to make.
The problem lies in children not fully comprehending the outcomes of their choices, or the reasons they make some of the decisions they do. It is the job of parents to protect and teach their children these things...
but sometimes children make choices and we can do nothing to stop what happens.
Much like the baby gazelle that wanders just a little too far from the parents, and gets eaten. The predator does not care about whose fault it was, or that the child may have made a decision it didn't fully comprehend... things happen as nature intends them.
Now, we are unlikely to get eaten by another animal... and we might somehow believe we, as humans, are different... but that doesn't change the fact that children still pay for the decisions they make.
The interesting thing is:
the mother gazelle will move on, some animals do mourn the passing of their young, but i believe many move on and have offspring in the next breeding season.
Humans either blame themselves, or shunt the blame onto an external source... try to find a reason for it... dwell on it.
Not all parents who lose kids are bad parents, but I NEVER hear of a parent who says to themselves: I did the best I could, it was just fate...nature....god.... or even just say "my child made a choice, and paid the consequences for it."
Sounds cold... and I blame our ability to reason, feel, and comprehend our surroundings. Our ability to do these things cause us to dwell on them, focus on them, and... sometimes warp our understanding of it.
Children will die, get hurt, or hurt others... no matter to our belief that they are innocent, or shouldn't pay for not knowing any better... Perhaps I too will lose my understanding of this when I have kids... and am unfortunate enough to lose one of my own...
But the world will keep spinning along... despite my beliefs.
The parents fault? Yeah right. Its the kids own fault. In my country at 16 your considered a man. This teenager was 15 years old. I'm sorry but at 15 I had common sense. You don't play a video game when you are tried, you do not miss school or stop your responsibility because of a video game. Bottom line this kid had to have some serious problems to take WoW so damn serious to make it his primary obligation.
I know 6 year olds who know better than this serious. I don't know what kind of home this kid was raised in. But In mexico if you sit infront of the computer for hours un end your father will eventually come with a hammer and brake that thing to bits.(Also in mexico the kid is less likely to run away screaming I hate you because of the shoot outs and Mafia struggles that are going on outside the house.. living here has its perks and its downs ><) And seriously if the parents should do anything its that. Take away the computer im sure his school has computers available for him to do his school work.
If this was my kid (I know a lot about computers so i could do this) but I would take the graphics card out of the computer. Leave it running with an onboard graphics chip. I would uninstall World of warcraft and take all the WoW games and expansions brake the CDs and make it so his computer could only be used when I provide a password, for school work and basic internet browsing. I would however MOTIVATE this kid to go outside pick up a sport, go to a Karate Class (Which I did and still do most of my teen years) learn some discipline and self control. It would also provide the need for interraction with people who will not judge and people who will respect you (This kind obviously had a lot of close relationships with strangers in this computer game if he was this into it, there for I would simply try to give him other choices in the real world with real people he could interact with) (Martial arts do this) and best of all provide him with the skills needed to protect himself if need be.
Bottom line this kid is missing something called common sense, which sadly is no longer as common as it should be. I hope he learned his lesson
