Gah! You call that a mech?! Go back to the drawing board.. and PRACTICE! A box on a box does not make a 3D modeller...

Armor on my left is two hours, just because I needed an avatar..   And I am not calling myself a 3D modeller.

Only game I wait for right now: Imperator.
    Go Mythic!

    Like said before, I don't
    a. call myself a 3D modeller, I merely said it's a hobby.
    b. do render art.
    c. play mine's bigger with strangers.
    d. care if you don't like my work.

That said I'd like to refer you to some of the other things I've said
    a. first of all, this model is ~650 poly and not entirely optimized (I left bottom planes even tho they are not visible from NWNs view).
    b. the model is missing much detail because I figured textures would work better than an extra 150 polys.
    c. the model was imported to NWN, and if you'd compare it to most characters you'd see it's pretty decent for the low poly count, it has much more detail therefor there isn't room to perfect each any every one.
    d. according to Sony, a box on a box is infact a mech, and box modelling (read BOX) is a technique often used for game modelling... sure I could use tesselate and add reflection maps, add lightning and hit render, but that would do nothing ingame since NWN only supports a very limited numer of predefined modifiers.

Oh, and here, this is SoE's version of the not-a-mech Peregrine (which I used alone for reference)

    image

    And here's MechWarrior3 version of not-mechs

    image
    image

Wait, I just realized MW3 isn't the newest version... oh look, NW4 features not-mechs aswell!

Amazing that you compare your.. box to MW 4 and Planetside. No matter, do go on, I am sure you have a wonderful career ahead of you... Yeeees. I will go back now to my pathetic attempts...

Wheew. Glad I am not you.

Me and my mates once tried to create a RPG, not mmorpg.

We did quite lot... art, ideas, music, character system as well as weapons system and we manage to create a very simple/basic gameplay. It was plannad to use a 2d gfx, like the Baldurs Gate series. It was called Silvermoon. And if I'am not mistaking, we got to v0.03 image

It was damn fun, but also damn hard. The project consumed alot of time and effort. But eventually studies became the main focus for us all and we decided to end the project, and concentrate on school instead.

Jeez, you sir are retarded (no offense).

I did not say your attempt was pathetic, it looks good but it is not game art... it's a render.
    I am not a 3D modeller (didn't I say that three times already?) I said it's a hobby.

You're flaming me for...? posting something which in your book isn't good enough for a 2 hour work? good point, I didn't manage to get to your level of l337n3ss ha><0ring modelling skeelz, you owned me, you're as good as it gets... I am going to drive a bullet through my brain now ::::16::

Seriously tho, what the hell are you talking about? yes your model is great, have a cookie. okay? ::::12::

This is my topic and I will decide what is fit to be posted here.  I requested any work to be posted and did not require any particular calibur of skill.  I asked all of you to please ignore the flamers, in my first post i noted that there will be some.  People just can't help but to try and pull people down when they're being productive.  Some even do it unintentionally.  So please, continue to post your work and your skills guys.  I'd also love to see some contact information.  Thanks.  image

So far I have emailed some of you (you know who you are) with a bit more info.  Some of you did not have available email addresses.  I'd like to see more posts of anyone else with talent.

I'm interested in knowing how many of you who frequent these forums have the capability or are interested in creating an online game.  Please post below what your skills are and what type of game you would be interested in if there were such a project.  Again, disregard the flamers because there's almost always a handfull in any post that is meant to be productive.image

I have a couple of thousand saved. I intend to create, between now and 2 years from now, (4 years from now definatly since I'll finnish school by then image) as my first game a game simular to either.......

     - Astonia III, or Runescape, or Strive For Power........or even Utopia.... as my first major game. Then see where I go from there. I have 2 other real life friends also with the same plans as me.

I have C/C++ and some DirectDraw experience. I wouldn't mind helping out where I can because I think I might learn something in the process. Atm I have self taught myself all that I know and plan to do so more in the future. It's just hard to come home from a day of thinking in school and sit in front of a computer to think even more and even harder. imageimage

Out of curiousity, Knowledge, are you an artist or programmer by any chance? In all of the indy progects I have ever read about the lead is most definitely always rather experienced. I cannot imagine a team organizing or accomplishing anything otherwise.

You CAN handle the truth...it's just really slippery.

Get the feeling this guy has no social skills.

Get the feeling the only reason he posts stuff like this is because he knows nobody's gonna break his obnoxious nose.

It's posts like this that get me banned from forums for flying off the handle. Not today though. This wanker really aint worth it.

we're actually looking for people who are interested in doing this sort of thing in their free time or do these things as a hobby regardless of whether or not they do it for a living.

I can't help you with this one. It would be too much of a hassle for me to work on a MMORPG over the computer with people I don't know. Good luck with your game, bud image

I am self taught.... java, VB, and C++... i started out mainly so I could code my own Half - life hacks... most people say I have pretty good skills.

also.... I have alot of free time on my hands lol...: ::::07::

I want to start to learn about modeling etc... I just dont know where to start...I am a fast learner though...but i am not very artistic....may be a limiting factor for me

as much as I would like to get involved I just don't have the time. My skill level isn't up to something of this scale either.

That said I can still point out things I have found that might be of use.

The NeL engine used by Saga of Ryzome is open source. Check www.nevrax.org. Everything is included, AI, networking graphics engine. You just need content (ok, so much more than just content but at least a huge chunk of the hard work is done for you).

There is a MMORPG engine for Blitz Basic. http://www.mmorpgce.com/ How good it is I have no idea.

Check out what the Planescape guys are doing in Crystal Space. I would have a chat to these guys, they will be able to give you some idea of the scale of the task your plan to undertake.

The Torque engine by Garage games www.garagegames.com is rather solid. While its not MMORPG ready at this stage it has very solid network code and could be adapted. Great community. Very good price for the SDK ($100US). Was used for Tribes and Tribes 2. The Torque shader engine was just released that supports all the fun new DirectX 9 pixel shaders.

    Read this - http://www.gamasutra.com/resource_guide/20040920/index.shtml

If you have never managed a software project before get yourself some books on project management. You will fail without strong management, all the ideas in the world don't keep a project on track. Motivation will be VERY hard to maintain.

    Good luck to you!
