Did he ever become popular outside of WoW in other mmorpgs?
Did you hear about him playing EQ FFXI, GW or another mmo too?
Did anyone actually know the guy?
Comments
I don't know why but that name sounds really familiar.
Never knew the guy but seen the made up video, dont think some mmo players will let us forget him either.

This is akin to asking if people have heard of Rick Astley outside of YouTube.
I met him once at a Blizzcon. He certainly was nothing like the image I'd conjured up.
He was really popular in Guild wars....where for a month it became all the rage to join Mission groups and wipe the mission by aggroing all the mobs in a big room at a time ~.~
Leeroy Jenkins, sometimes mis-spelled Leroy Jenkins and often elongated with numerous additional letters, is an Internet phenomenon named for a character created by player Ben Schultz in Blizzard Entertainment's popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. The character has become popular thanks to a machinima video of the game that circulated around the Internet. The phenomenon has since spread beyond the boundaries of the gaming community into other online and mainstream media.
The Internet phenomenon started with the release of a video clip online to the World of Warcraft forums. The video was released by the World of Warcraft Alliance player guild "Pals for Life" on the Laughing Skull PvP realm. It features a group of players discussing a detailed battle strategy while one of their number, Leeroy, is away from his computer. Their plan is ruined when Leeroy returns and, ignorant of the strategy, immediately charges headlong into battle shouting his own name as a battle cry. His companions rush to stop him, and his subsequent actions ruin the meticulous plan and the encounter ends in failure for the group. His response to the other players' reactions, "at least I have chicken", was also much parodied.
The August 2005 issue of PC Gamer UK featured an article on the video, titled "The Ballad of Leeroy Jenkins." According to the article, the video was designed as a negative commentary on the kind of "nerd-guilds" that meticulously and statistically plan out raids with all the seriousness of actual military tactics. Leeroy is in fact the hero of the piece, acting against the geekiness of his guild.[1]
He used to play Shadowbane back in 03'. He was in the guild who "hacked" the server and put entire towns underwater, spawned high level unique mobs in newbie towns watching them kill everything. spawned enemy guards in other faction towns and watched as a huge NPC war took place, etc Then he moved onto WoW at some point.
I did not find it originally, nor do I find it now, at all funny.
It was a moment that I realized that it might be me who is out-of-touch with gaming.
A fake video, a burnt-out college student, in World of Warcraft, training his raid-party. Funny? Stupid. Stupid funny? Not at all.
probably just a clever marketing stunt done by blizzard..it was definitely a fake.
I think Dives from the Onyxia wipe audio eventually became more popular even though most people don't actually know his character name. I read that people would invite him to raids to have him yell at them. "More dots! More dots!" The main difference was that the Onyxia wipe audio wasn’t originally meant to be funny. The guy was for real.
I think the more you know about pen and paper rpgs, as appose to Wow per se, the more you appreciate this clip. If you see it as inherently absurd as well as the bastion of the socially less adept (despite being really nice peolpe) the funnier it is. When I first saw it one late night online I almost <bleeped> my pants laughing because it was the standard game of d&d gone horibly awry, in a way they sometimes do, but to see it so vividly was hysterical, and how seriously they seemed to be taking it was the creme de la creme. So funny in its nerdiness and mayhem. Even the name of the guild "Pals4Life" captured so much of what fantasy wargaming was, some of the charm. Despite being staged, its a total classic that kinda allows us to laugh at ourselves and that absurdity of gaming I talked about before.

I agree with this angle of the Leeroy Jenkins saga. Over analyzing strategy before going into big fights ruins immersion. Nothing wrong with forming a plan of attack, but sometimes it gets to the point where people practically pull out their chalk boards and draw it up for everyone. The sign of a good gamer is one who can adjust during the fight.
I first heard about him while playing WoW, but I was aware at the time that some said he had been around long before WoW.
Well tbh the video was a fake, you can hear very bad tactics getting told, also at the end you can hear someone say "fake"also 1 person saying he has to take all the egg's ..come on guys.
for people that might not know what we are talking about here is the video...

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

OMG that was so F good ROFL
Why is everyone saying this is a fake video, do u really take video games that seriously he obviously wiped a raid why would you make a fake video of that when you can make a real one its only a video game and before him many people wiped raids because they had no chance of surviving and couldnt be bothered waiting for a nother hour to kill one mob so they did the same as he did except they didnt make a video of it and now its gone beyond good its jst stupid now when you see people yelling Lerroy! even tho it was good at the start and grats on him making so much publicity from it but get over it.
Played: Archlord, GW, RFO, Knight Online, Silkroad, WoW, Rappelz, shaiya, Flyff, Fury, Space Cowboy, Perfect World Beta, Rakion, sword of the new world, Linage 1 and 2, Savage 1

When I played War somone was named Leeroy Jenkins. Or maybe it was Jeeroy Lenkins...... I cant remember I have a bad time with names.
I've heard of him, back in EQ2 for a couple of week peeps were doing a 'Leeroy' in Varsoon, but does anyone remember Fansy the Bard from EQ?
I remember Leeroy from EQ days. I also had a guildmate back in WOW that used to run with him in their guild during EQ. You know all of you that have played EQ, EQ 2, WOW, etc... have pulled a Leeroy at least once in your MMORPG "career"!!!
I was pretty sure that I heard of Leeroy from EQ before WoW ever came out......Obviously the video is from a WoW raid so WoW gets the credit for Leeroy but I am pretty sure he started in Everquest.

You apparently havent played the really difficult WoW endgame content.... strategizing on this level is absolutely vital if you have any intention of succeeding
No hard feelings, just FYI
