You can't outright dodge a fireball, but you can use line of sight to cause a spell to fizzle (ie, it won't hit you if you're not in line of sight when the cast begins AND when it ends) and you can double-tap sideways for a high chance to resist a spell.

And I personally like AoC's visual style. I liked neverwinter nights' visual style. Everything doesn't have to glow neon colours to be visually appealing.

True and it does look like fun to play but it is a ways off and will not bother with it until it is closer to launch.

You got to love these geniuses who come to try and troll on Aion's board. With very little reseach anyone could see that NCsoft has stated very clearly that Aion isnt grounbreaking or as you (OP) call it next-gen. The Aion devs have not made any spectacular promises, or telling us that it is the next big thing or anything like that. They have been straight foward with us the fans for a long time now. Unlike your next-gen game devs. ***cough DF****. For me that goes a long way in the games I will play. NCSoft has hid nothing about Aion whether it is good or bad like nothing revolutonary. I am fine with re-hashed concepts with little twists. As are the majority of the Aion fans. So OP go sit in your next-gen game board and get strung along by the devs. Let your hopes sky rocket so when the game fails to meet the unrealistic expectations. We all can have a laugh at your expense.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

Remember people, this is what happens when kids decide to make games. Leave it to the professionals son, they are the ones that know how to make a game. Stay in school, get a degree in game design, then work for an established company for a few years before deciding you can make a game better than anyone else, just because you aren't afraid to put in godmode....

    -----------------------
Tried- L2, Ryzom, WAR, DDO, PWI, Tab Rasa, Requiem, Champs, AA, JD, PWI, SUN, Dawntide

Played- SWG (pre-cu), AoC, VG, WoW, LoTRO,CoX, EQ2, DAOC, GW, PotBS, Aion, MO,APB, NASA, Fallen Earth, DCUO, Rift

    Playing- EVE, Black Prophecy, TOR

Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW

I think what he is describing is one of, but not exclusively, the logical progressions in the mmorpg genre.   It is one of several types of game that the genre probably evolve into.  Other game types will be far more reminiscent of current mmorpgs.

FPS is already moving in this direction with peristant charater unlocks, all it's going to take is a movement by the mmorpg genre also and they will meet in the middle.  I think that todays technology is more than ready for it as well if a few sacrifices are made in graphics.

However I do not think that the type of person who will play this kind of game is same type of person that is interested in Aion, they will be people who play FPS and MMORPG and want the best of both in one game.  I do think though that there is a very big audience out there waiting for this type of game if it is done properly, personally I can't wait for this to become reality.

True they have been very open throughout the process. You will not find a NDA here. All are open to bit*h in an open forum "and they have". and videos have been releases throughout the whole process. There is nothing to hide.

And there has been issues with balance and bugs, and most if not all the bugs have been fixed. As far as balance, they stated clearly that they will address balance after the game launches. (but in fact they started doing balance before that because there were not many bugs to fix).

Come on guys , its a fun game. just give it a shot. If you don't like it after you hit lvl20 then ok np, i guess its just not your type of game. But don't flame it just because its a new game and you know nothing about it.

I don't want a next-gen MMO.  I want a traditional MMO with fancy graphics and lots of polish.

WoW used to be this, but they decided to dumb the game down to such a point that being exceptional didn't count for anything anymore, so I quit and have been playing in the sandbox ever since.

Now don't get wrong, while Eve is fun and it's a game I've definately fallen in love with, I'm still looking forward to a game where I can slay internet dragons and come home with the fancy clothes that can't be taken away from me to say I did it, without having to strategize for hours and hours, play political games, or be constantly looking over my shoulder.

  • PezheadPezhead Member Posts: 149

"Next Gen" can be put into several catagories.  The first of which is a simple time frame- Lineage was made in the late 90's, and Aion is made in the late 2000's, therefore, Aion is the next generation(think Star Trek) .  Or Graphics, Starcraft uses 2D sprites while Homeworld uses a 3D graphic engine, therefore, even though Homeworld came out a mere year and a half after SC, Homeworld is next gen(was).  WoW has a skill based combat system, Age of Conan uses directional attacks, therefore AoC is next gen.  Does a game need every single one of these to be next gen?  I wouldn't think so, and yet those of you crying about the lack of quality MMOs, and singing about your "tactical skill" in shooters, have you considered RTS? Would not a MMORTS be totally awesome with hundreds of thousands of troops controlled by several hundred players fighting it out on the battlefield?  OH WAIT! There's no twitch involved, sorry, despite the fact that you must use strategy, tactics and teamwork, it CAN'T be a skill game because there's no TWITCH!

As far as i'm concerned, you FPS junkies can suck my FPS balls, because when it comes down to it, you're no match for an RTS player in terms of strategic intelligence, innovation and micromanagement.

THERE, just had to get my FPS rant out.

It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay.

Blade and soul is next gen-- dodge--- turn-- depends on what position you get hit from reflects the damage--- needed ability to run on walls and trees to get to certain areas-- low lvl need to walk around to find a bridge-- skilled players can learn how to jump the river- I mean jesus just look at this video

i can almost call chronicles of spellborn a next gen title since it seems real-time and can dodge melee attack with real human-skill involve. no idea if we can dodge a fireball though but anyway the crappy graphic is holding it back from calling it a next gen title.

next gen mmo must have both innovating department, true real-time and graphic. aion is just a souped up lineage2 with great graphic and a blend of wow controls. super lineage2. gameplay still the same generic mmo out there. cant dodge fireball blah blah no human-skill involve. only stat involve. mmo need to stop making stat level based and make it human-skill based. cause whoever high level win is no fun.

MMO WITH STAT BASED LEVEL BASED IS ENCOURAGING CURRUPTCY...... PLAYERS WILL START ILLEGALLY/LEGALLY BUYING IN-GAME CURRENCY TO RAISE STAT AND LEVEL UP FASTER.  so do you want to race each other with this kind of currupcy system? hell no i wouldnt even play. the people that buys in-game currency is jus dont notice the manipulation  system.
MMO WITH PURE HUMAN-SKILL BASED, TRUE REAL-TIME, GREAT GRAPHIC.... THAT IS NEXT GEN MMO.

from the creator of aion.. from the creator of lineage2.. called blade and soul will be a true next gen mmo. innovating looking with that console feel and unparalleled graphic will surely make you drool all over.

mmorpg is getting obsolete cause its keep on bringing same old crap on the table.

You want to see something that may be ACTUAL next gen, perhaps NCSOFT's REAL developers can show you.

Head over to the actual developers of lineage2,they are now running their own company ,with lots of cash to fund it.The company is called Bluehole studio and they claim their combat system will blow away the stuff we see now.Everything that is modernized will be in there next game...code named S1.

It is funny that most of the original developers of these hit games are not even with those companies anymore, including the guys who made WOW.

I think we have to wait until 2010 until we see the REAL new tech games come out, because they all just started developing ,using the Unreal 3 Tech engine,so it will take some  time.

I am not sure ,but i think Aion is also using unreal tech no?Even if it is using ue2,it is still a very good engine ,capable of doing a lot,but is for sure limited in quality behind the UE3.I am not sure who is running the AION project and weather they have any qualifications or skills from previous work IDK,all up in the air.

Silly, Aion is using the CryEngine from the game farcry, no to be confused with the CryEngine2 used in Crysis, or the Dunia engine in Farcry 2.

It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay.

'Next gen' is a marketing gimmick.

That's it. For the rest of the explanation see Pezhead's post on the previous page...

FPS does not equal MMORPG, but MMOFPS. Companies have tried to merge them, but so far it has weaksauce results.

Personally I have no interest in an MMOFPS, I want an MMORPG. Which Aion might do very well.

I agree 100% on the FPS part, they do not belong together.

I have never heard of this cry engine, good thing it is not the CRYSIS pile of garbage, that engine would lag a PC 10 years from now.Not sure how to take the CRY engine,if it is there own does that mean they were too cheap to buy a better one?or does it mean they were passionate in taking there time to develop there own engine ,one that could give them more of what they are looking for.How much time have the yactually put into the development would give a better picture. It would take at least 2 years just to make a decent game engine, not a great one.

Without NCSOFT telling us why they chose that engine,it is impossible to know.

NEXT gen DOES mean a lot, just look at that video posted on WEBZEN's site. That is HIGH TECH at it's best and any game coming out with that realism and looks could steal a ton of subscribers from any game.It is not always a gimmick, but i agree it usually is :(.

Next Gen does not equal just being different.  Real time combat is not next gen it is a different type of game.  Personally RPGs are stat driven combat games.  FPS games are a different type of game.  I would not play an RPG that was a FPS because I don't care for FPS games.

FPS is NOT next gen it has been around for a long time.  FPS is just a different type of game.

Next gen to me would be a more dynamic world that evolves over time.  More sphisticated crafting and econmonic models.  A more fleshed out world that actually changes.  Maybe even environmental changes or things where players can impact the world in some dynamic way.  In other words make the world more real.

Make mobs more intelligent.  How about mobs that move around in an intelligent way.  Mobs that have motivations and maybe even stalk players or lure players in intelligent ways.  To many "next gen" games think next gen is cooler graphics, or fps style combat which is totally missing the root of what an RPG game is really about.  The story, the lore, interacting with the world, etc...  I look at games like warhammer which or AoC both of which have dumped the world and mob ai to create a framework for a game that is mostly only about pvp.  Mobs are not intelligent in fact they are less intelligent then wow or even eq for that matter.  Games are going up with graphics and whiz bang features but becoming stupider and stupider and completely missing the core.

Anyway I'm sure this is off topic and doesn't address Aion at all.  I'd say it is to early to really comment on Aion and what it will be till we can actually play it.

I think the only next gen game or maybe I'll say the last next gen game was star wars galaxies.  Yeah I know it has been screwed up but when it was released it had many next gen features.  Albeit a bunch of bugs and some problems but none the less it was next gen.  It is kinda sad nobody has taking the thing SWG implemented and ever brought them forward into newer more modern games maybe done better...

Oh well I'm sure sometime in the future someone will get a clue....

I agree with you. Lately it seems that when people talk about skill it's fast fingers the only thing that matters. I think MMORPGs are a lot more than this.

I'm judging based on the video in the link above.  The graphics look ok but not significantly different then the game I mentioned.  Also I didn't see anything that looked particularly compelling in that video.  I think lineage 2 actually looked better and the game looks on par with perfect world which is a f2p MMO...
