You start out using a Hammer, and your skill is pretty good with it. Later you find a decent sword and start using that instead, and now your sword skill is about even with your Hammer skill.
You have commissioned a guildee to craft you a really nice sword. You gave him the gold to buy the items for it, and he's working on it. Your sword will be ready, he says, in a couple of days, right after he finishes a couple of other orders.
You go out into the wilderness, and you fight a Mob that drops a Hammer. This Hammer does a few more hit points of damage than the sword you are currently using, but not as much damage as the sword your friend is crafting for you.
On the way back to town, will you use your Sword, or this new Hammer you just found?

the fireball
This is so interesting. Will think about it a bit more before taking a decision.
You may replace either the Hammer or the Sword with the Fireball Spell skill, and the question is the same, just different skills.
You find a fireball spell... etc.

Can I have your stuff?
Where is the option "I'm afraid of being PK'd, so I will put the Hammer in storage, along with the new Sword when I get it, until I have two level 99 characters I can use to whack anyone who dares attack my alt?"
You are out in the wilderness, and there is no storage nearby. You have to travel back to town to get to the storage facility.
You went into the wilderness unarmed, and beat up some bandits with your bare hands, because you are such a badass. You found a sword, and a hammer when you looted them. You have the skills to use both, as mentioned in the original post.
You can put the Sword and the Hammer in storage when you get there, but you have to get there first.
Which will you use on the way to town, the Sword or the Hammer (both do more damage than your bare knuckles)?
Where is the choice to use both, If My sword skill is just a bit lower than Hammer right now I will use the Hammer, when my Sword is ready I'll use it, there is no need to choose.
If you are using the Hammer right now, you just made the choice.
Which one will you use to kill the very next Mob that attacks you? You can't say there is no choice, unless you are just going to stand there and die.
In this scenario, you don't have the ability to dual wield, holding the sword in one hand, and the hammer in the other.
That may be a skill in the game, but in this case you don't have that skill yet.
This is like, a dumbed down version of Dungeons and Dragons...
Personally, I'd use the hammer, and smash the creator of this topic.

So you're going to deliberately choose to use a weapon that does less damage, just so you can use it to increase your skill?
TheHowler just said he would smash me, but it would be stupid to use the sword, he'd use the Hammer.
very stupid question, obviously u use the sword, who cares if its weaker, ur skill in the swords will increase and probably surpass the dmg of the hammer within a few skill lvls. and then ull have a sweet sword and a higher skill in it. and swords just look better.
So you're going to deliberately choose to use a weapon that does less damage, just so you can use it to increase your skill?

Yes. Think LONG RUN.
Why the hammer of course.
Either I learn the skills quickly, and learning a second skill is easy and quick, or I learn the skills slowly, so there wont be any real change anyways.... either way, i get to use the better weapon, and some hammer skill... because who is to say I wont find a hammer better than the sword being made... and two skills are better than one.
There is no choise, i flip a coin :P
It does not matter. It has already been declared that this game is not item centric meaning that sweet sword waiting for you will likely only be marginally better then either weapon you have right now. The hammer if better probably does minimally more damage then the sword you are using so no real net gain will be achieved. Even if there is an advantage chances are it will be gone off my stinking corpse before I reach a place to store either of the weapons.
Since stats are a non-factor, I would equip the one that looks better and be done with it.

- Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
People won't be satisfied with that. as a typical gamer, i know i always want to choose the best no matter how small the advantage is
*cough*aoc*cough*
Either the sword your friend is making for you will give some advantage worthwhile, or crafting is a waste of time.
Are you saying crafting in Darkfall will be a waste of time?
The Hammer would be the more "natural" choice, the choice that is more like real life, in my opinion.
To think that if I was in danger, I'd use a less effective weapon to protect myself, because in the long term I'd get better with it, seems rather odd.
Makes perfect sense for the gameworld, however.
not "natural" but "common sense". there isn't any skill point in real life and sword would be a better choice because speed is essential in a battle. Sledgehammers (i assume) are just too slow and heavy to use + sword's piercing power works way better. so..wait what am i talking about again
This decision is hard for me. I'm going to have to play Open Beta to decide.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Stop! Hammer time!
This is a easy one. The answer is it doesn't matter. Since DF if FFA there are no really good swords (or really good gear of any type) Ask any fan DF is a game of skill and equipement will have very little to no effect, thus why waste your coin having a guildy make you a sword that will be basically the same as any mob drop?
Really I would figure by now some of you would know more about DF. Df is not gear driven, thus you never have to worry about being killed since your gear is basically standard except for looks to the average mob drop. Sure your guildy might be able to work hard and make you a sword that does 1 more point of damage but you'd be better off spending your gold to pay a merc to guard you.
DF= gear<skill<numbers. Don't take my word though ask the fans any 4 newbies will be able to take out a max skilled max geared character. (well at least in theory)
