its a great time to join, extended trial and all that. its easy to up yourself to a competative level very quickly, just train for tech 2 frigs like the interceptor or assault ship and you can take out a battleship. only game where a brand new player can kill a 4 year veteran.
just wondering. I've always wanted to play this game but is it like EQ, where
"if you haven't been in the loop you might as well stay out." ?
You've always wanted to play the game? Then why havent you? Just download the trial and play it and then you will answer your own question. Its not rocket science.
......and no It is nothing like EQ. How could it be? You're in a spaceship flying around the galaxy. EVE is one of the few mmos which has not copied the tiresome level grinding single-player co-op themepark design which seems to be the trend with mmos. Its also a PvP focused game which EQ is definately not......so if you dont like the idea of having realism in your games then EVE might not be for you.
Be warned that EVE has a steep learning curve but it is a hell of a lot more advanced than any other mmo. People can play EVE for months and still not know everything about the game. For this reason the game tends to attract a more mature playerbase. You would also be advised to join a corporation (guild) because like I said EVE is not a PvE game and if you approach it in the same way that you approach other mmos then you will find it boring.
But you were referring to elitism right? Well you might hear a lot on forums that elitism is rife in EVE. This is actually completely untrue. The community in EVE is very helpful BUT many people get pissed off with lazy people asking stupid questions in the chat channels without even bothering to figure things out for themselves. As a result the community sometimes gets accused of being elitist when in fact the reality is that the community just has zero tolerance for immature arsewipes.....and thats a good thing.
For example if another player blows your ship up and you get upset and insult them over the chat channels then quite often the community will quite rightly tell you where to go. Its a PvP game so expect to die and refrain from taking it personally. Oh and unlike other mmos "young" characters (no levels in this game) can go anywhere and fulfill a purpose in any corporation. Having more skill points in this game doesnt mean you can automatically defeat players with less skill points unlike in other mmos where the higher level players win by default. More skill points give an advantage but are certainly not the deciding factor in a fight.
To be honest its a shame that there arent more games like EVE.

actually i have to stop you. eve is fun and ill admit a great game in certain respects. but high skill point characters are truly almost unbeatable if they are specced for pvp. you have to have a group who works together but in one on one you are going to get your ass kicked even if you have all the same ships and equipment. im witing on jumpgate myself
Why do you idiots always have to derail a Eve thread with the "you will never catch up" bullshit.
I'm getting so sick an tired of this crap, I'll bet you anything that my one year old Pilot in a Heavy assualt cruiser (HAC) can WTFPWN!!!! a 5 year old vet in the same ship, wanna know why? because I put every last skill point in flying that type of ship.
Telling players they can't catch up or be competitive is a Lie, To all new players don't listen to this bullshit just keep trainng your evemon load out and you will be fine.

Its amazig how badly some people like to whine. sure your frig cant destroy a titan, but can a noon kill a fully leveled char in other mmos. Train to use one type of ship and you(ll be strong in eve. Anyway what kind of retard would go out and fight alone in eve?? This is a game where soloing mean rushin a transport destroy and run away, not lets run around 0.0 in a bs and 1vs1 some other bs. If your were planning to do that sorry but that wont work.

As others have pointed out, you're wrong. An opponent with more skill points might be able to gain an advantage but thats all it will be - an advantage.
Play the Trial and see if you like the feel of eve. Then decide.
Any pilot can do anything in eve if they set their mind to it. There is no raid game, no end game boss, no dkp to worry about. There is just Eve ...and you the individual pilot is the one who writes your own story.
What will your story be? Will it be epic sized fleet fights, iron gripped industrial giant, dashing swashbuckling pirate, evil underworld boss, or maybe powerful market tycoon?
This is what Eve is....its your story waiting for you, because only you can write it.

I've thought about this many times, but never said anything. So now I will.
What you are describing has many parallels to real life. And the winning attitude in EVE is much like the winning attitude in life.
If you think you cannot do a thing in EVE (as in life), probably you are right, you cannot do it, because you will never try.
If you decide that anything is possible and decide to shoot for the stars (as in life) you may or may not attain the exact goal you started out to attain, but chances are you you will accomplish some amazing things nonetheless.
And (as in life), your many successes will likely be dotted with some stunning failures along the way.
In EVE (as in life) your destiny is yours to choose. The worst thing you can do is not reach for it and do nothing.

Try having yours right first. I've lost my fair share of Battleships to small ships with smart pilots. I know the shot of my ratting ships againts interceptors and Assualt frigs. Cruisers might give me some trouble unless they bring EWAR in which case i'm probably screwed royally since I'll be doing a ton of damage with out being able to lock anyone. Understand the game first before you make any comments so taht way you can include the multiple ways to fight a more experienced player since there are only so many modules you can fit on a ship and You'll never have enough to cover all the bases. EWAR is your friend if your new, you can have 3 trillion SP in gunnery and it does you absolutely nothing if you can't lock and very few ships that are actually dangerous carry any sort of ECCM.
I killed a 4-year old player in a megathron with probably 300 million in equipment on it. I was in a 60 million ISK drake and I am 11 months old.
lol... O'rly .. tell me.. did you kill it yourself? or your name just happen to be in the final blow on the kill mail tagging along with your gang mate's. there's no way in hell a drake can go toe to toe with a mega.
* this I'm assuming this 4 yr old spent some of his sp on a t2 blasters and t2 drones and not an idiot., if not then he deserves to loose his BS.
it doesn't matter what kind of ops either a fleet battle or gate camp, as long as you are with a bunch of experienced pilot with high sp ... a low sp character on a frig can help out cleaning up the pod.
t2 pvp ships, t2 or named modules doesn't take that long to train. depends on what you specialize in. so bragging about "look ma, i just pwn a 4 yr. old character and im only 1 yr." is moronic.
there's no way in hell a drake can go toe to toe with a mega.
How much solo experience do you have? Not a lot i guess.
Drakes can do nasty things if flown right, and thanks to changes to tracking disruption, combined with the many medslots a drake has, plus the ability to stay relatively agile, you can down a mega, even a neutron gankmega, with a drake.
It's a matter of chosing the right setup specifically to counter the mega, e.g. tracking disruption, a 2p scram, and some resists against thermal and a little kinetic. Once you dug through the Ogres they usually field, got his mwd disabled, you can go and kill it.
I've killed geddons and megas with frigates, others kill titans with battlships, battleships with battlecruisers, cruisers with rookie ships, t2 cruisers with shuttles, or vagabonds and ceptors with t1 industrials. It's a matter of smart flying and fitting, and knowing what you can do and what you can't.
I've killed geddons and megas with frigates, not solo, you are in group unless you caught him with no drones and using the bs to mine
others kill titans with battlships wow no suprise there, takes massive BS and other Cap ship to bring a titan down. but again the point i was making is did you solo a titan?
battleships with battlecruisers happens all the time. its about the fititings and tactics.
cruisers with rookie ships either your soloing a complete newb.
t2 cruisers with shuttles really you got a kill mail on killing T2 cruisers with your shuttle solo or are you just blowing that out of your ass.
or vagabonds and ceptors with t1 industrials. c'mon don't say "i" just because you see that youtube gang of industrial baited that stupid vaga.
It's a matter of smart flying and fitting, and knowing what you can do and what you can't. you are right on the money on this one.
I have had many solo encounters from empire war to 0.0 and that last quote is very true, knowing what your getting into is always the deciding factor.
I've lost a Geddon to a frigate before, Fleet fitted no active tank just a hitpoint buffer and damage mods. Took the bastard a long time but wasn't much I could do.

genius inside insanity
At a Gate camp " No One Will Hear You Scream "
MAGA
so if I were flying a harpy and got in under the guns of a megathron it would beat me because... its pilot has more SPs?
or a curse pilot could never lose to a hurricane pilot? or a harbinger pilot?
simply put, thats a complete load of bull.

Eve is an empty canvas. It is what you make of it. Be prepared to have a lot of free time to fill that canvas in. Eve requires huge amounts of time.
Or not.
I play about 2 hours per day 3 times a week on weekdays, a little more on weekends.
In my view, EVE is the ultimate casual gamer's game.

Tell me something Remusus,
What do think the chances are of a BS even hitting a signiture tanked Assault Frigate traveling at around 2 km/sec 500 meters from the BS.
How long do you think it would take the BS to take out the AF?
