Again you prove you have no idea what you're talking about. CoH was voted 'Game of the Year' by many different gaming magazines and websites and Champions is being followed by hundreds of thousands very interested fans. I would hardly call either of these failures in any way. CoH/CoV alone netted this company more money than most make over their entire corporate lifespans so even if Champions doesn't do so well they will still be in the green. Again show some proof of what you're claiming or you are just talking out of your ass again.

I would love to see a startrek mmo that would enbale me to focus on adventure but this will be nothing more than a flight sim. As for no clue, everyone was saying the same thing over perpetual and look what happend. I see nothing that changes my mind, this game will fail, if its ever released at all.
If by some miracle they do get it right, you are looking at a 2011 release., so who cares, they should have done this and got it our years ago.
Here's a clue for you...Cryptic is NOT Perpetual Entertainment. Cryptic is a company with a well established and proven track record. PE was just a train wreck waiting to happen. There is a MAJOR difference between the two. Exploration and discovery is a major part of the game and if you would just forget about the mess that PE was working on and go read all you can about the new STO you would see that as well. This will be much more than just a space flight sim. If it takes until 2011 to get it right it will be more than worth the wait. It's not Cryptic's fault PE was a train wreck of a company so maybe you should stop blaming them for it.
Just in case you guys did not know, GI's ( Game informer) cover story was Star trek online. They cover a ton of information in the 5 or so pages they cover Star trek online in.
Check it out if you want more information thats not completely skewed.
So no rank system? work your way up thru the ranks and unlock new ship and train in the necessary skills to make the most out of the ships? work your way up to captain then to admiral (which should be next to impossible to achieve..)
I hate to say it, but ever since the success of WoW, almost every MMORPG game after that has been a failure or at least didn't reach expected status. The fantasy genre has gotten really really old and eventually people will get tired of fantasy MMO release one after another and as decent of a company as Cryptic is, I hope they manage to make a sci-fi game stand out. I had hopes for Tabula Rasa do to just that but that game is a big flop, and SWG would've made it big if it hadn't been overhauled twice.
If STO is available for PC, I'll be happy with that, otherwise screw it if it's for console.
Do you have any actual facts to back up your wild accusations or are you just talking out of your ass like we all think you are? I'd bet on the latter myself. Maybe you should actually go and read up on the game before you decide to come here and troll because it's obvious to many here including myself that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
Bren
They have already had 1 money sink failure, what makes you think they have the money in such hard times, no this game will have the minimum funding as its already eaten up a budget.
Are you trying to say that Cryptic is considering Perpetuals budget during their development cycle?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Im a big startrek fan, I own every episode on DVD, and I must say this game is starting to make me excited. I am really looking forward to it, I hope it consumes my entire life like wow did for so many people.
Please dont bash this game, until its released and you have tried it. If at that point you still dont like it, feel free to bash it, but not before you know.

I for one will give STO a try, I would like to be on beta when it comes out. last star trek game i played was Klingon Academy. I seen the video of STO and it looks 90% better than KA.
They have no idea what star trek was about, community, interaction with others, and what’s this captain crap... my advice would be to at least sit down and watch... ONE! Star trek episode... but sadly... once gain, even after a dev change, they get it in their heads about what they think this license is all about, cutting off the very thing that made start trek great... exploration... adventure new worlds new life. Solving mysteries... engaging environments... lol star ship captains for all....
I don't know, even the crappiest Star trek game seems to sell a lot. It looks bad though but that doesn't mean it won't have many players.
Nothing in the world have so many fanatic fans a ST (not counting religion).
The most spoken constructed language in the world is not Esperanto (which is a try to make a simple to learn langauge for anyone speaking a european language) but Klingon.
I agree that this game will be a failure in the sense that a majority of Trekkies wont like it. But the reason for that I think is because they are making a linear MMORPG of Star Trek. A linear game on such a concept that is so obviously a sand box theme is just beyond being out of touch of the franchise you are building a game on.

Indeed! Cryptic simply cannot be compared to Perpetual Entertainment!
I was there - in the closed beta for Gods and Heros when PE pulled the plug on G&H -- a game that I and many thought had immense potential -- the excuse was to concentrate on the Star Trek MMO. Of course, the truth was that even at that time, PE was suffering from a sucking chest wound they could never survive.
Bren's right - PE' s Star Trek MMO was a train wreck with less that zero chance of success. It was unexpected, but was no surprise to anyone when PE disappeared -- literally in the middle of the night -- law suits and creditors at their heels.
PE's views on the Start Trek franchise was freakin' scarey. There's no better way to discribe it -- lets just say we were certain Mudd (remember that Star Trek character?) was at the helm at PE.
Cryptic is one studio that pretty much has done everything right since inception. When you check their history and performance with past games and the two they are working on right now, not many others (if any) are doing it better.
I know the Star Trek MMO universe Cryptic is creating for us in STO will do the IP justice -- STO will be an MMO that Gene Roddenberry would be proud of.

I was under the impression, not sure from where, that it would be linear in the sense that you get missions to complete in some kind of storyline (that runs independantly with all the houndreds of other people playing on the same server). And finishing each mission, which occours at specific, level restriced zones, would develop your character.
If my impression is correct then that sounds pretty linear. If I am wrong, and I hope I am, then I apologise

I don't think it will ultimately fail, but it won't be a WoW game. This is a genre that is sorta one sided and it's only going to capture a few hundred thousand people. The problem comes as the old saying goes "Too many Chiefs, not enough indians" The problem with this "Everyone is a Captian" ordeal is that Starfleet can't go around handing everyone the title "Captain". Captain of a starship is an "ELITE" status meaning, NOT EVERYONE CAN GET CAPTAINSHIP. Cryptic may need to think this over quite a bit and I think once they watch a few episodes, they'll realize that making everyone Captain is not a great idea. I, for one, DONT WANT TO BE CAPTAIN. I'd rather be the "LaForge" tinkering with the engines and making sure the ship is running at optimal performance. There's nothing wrong with not being a Captain and Cryptic doesn't have to make this game like the Special Olympics to where EVERYONE WINS. In real life, not everyone can be a captain and not everyone can be an engineer. It's just Cryptic needs to take into account what each individual person wants to do on a ship.
Me personally, I think a Ship needs to be the "Guild". GM is the Captain and the Officers are the people that run the ship. Without those officers, the ship will fail. Catch my drift?
Im gonna have to agree with this last poster, I would love to be a Doctor or something on a ship, would be fun in my opinion. We'll have to wait and see, maybe they'll make it so we can all join the same ship.
I'm also afraid if you dont have people running a ship that in depth, then well, maybe it wont be as good as I thought. Would like to see that though.
I for one would not want to be on some one elses ship where they get to make the decisions and play captain and I have to sit in engineering not seeing any of the battle clicking on panels. Doesnt sound to fun to me. As far as being social and communticating with others, that is what vent and the chat box is for, you dont have to be standing next to someone to be social. And if you watch the episodes, its all about the captain, what they say goes and everyone else follows. I think they are doing a better job than perpetual was for sure.

What you describe would really be a niche game. I can't think of anything more boring than being a crew member on a ship you don't own nor can control. As for Captain's rank, you don't have to be a Captain to captain a ship. You will still have to gain ranks to command larger vessels.
You can bring other people onboard your ship for missions. You can hang out in familier places from the shows like DS9 and roleplay if that's your bag. You'll have customizable ship intieriors as well as extieriors, customizable crew members, the ability to discover new races and unexplored planets, new technology...etc
There is talk of later down the road adding missions that will involve the members of your team doing the crewing of the ship, but let's face it, as far as that 'being' the game? That would be dull as hell.

Ok I haven't sat on the STO website or followed the details for weeks etc. However I can not see this game working. I love ST and like the OP said ST is about exploration, solving problems and meeting different species, not to mention the interaction between the crew. Can they encapsulate all this or even part of this in an MMO? Most likely not so I can see it being a grind fest with players trying to level to Captain rank and getting the biggest ship to grind even more. With Jumpgate Evolution (soonish) and EVE on the market I can not see what ST can bring that those 2 games will or have not done so already.
The only gap I can see in the marketplace is a Earth & Beyond type game with walking as well as flying but if they nerf ground combat like in PotBS then they are screwed. Unfortunately for the scale this game should be I doubt any development team will be able to produce those results.
If the game proves me wrong then I will be the first to subscribe.
If it takes until 2011 to get it right it will be more than worth the wait. It's not Cryptic's fault PE was a train wreck of a company so maybe you should stop blaming them for it.
Bren
No it wont. Large multi million dollar software development projects that drag on so long that their requirements completely change are never good. The amount of people that will QQ about BS in that time will completely ruin the game. i.e. Look at guild wars and WoW - very good games after release because they were producing a game to a spec and knew that they were in touch with their target audience. Years later both games have been ruined by arena PvPers dictating the shape of all future development. People are already crying their eyes out before they've seen an alpha test.
If Cryptic start again from scratch then I can understand but it's hard to believe that there wont be some BS that will bleed through from PE's original product.
-- Note: PlayNC will refuse to allow you access to your account if you forget your password and can't provide a scanned image of the product key for the first product you purchased..... LOL

All that they have used from PE is some art work. They have been working on the game they want to build with their engine already up and running.

Well 2011 would be only a 4 year development cycle which is still short for a MMO. The standard development cycle is 5 years. The fact that Cryptic has their own engine and development tools in place means they are shooting for a 2 year cycle which is almost unheard of in this industry. If you think 4 years is a long time for a MMO you haven't been around this genre very long or your completely ignorant of what it takes to make one of these games.
(Ignorant means being without knowledge on the given subject by the way and is not an insult! Not that you don't know what it means... just that people on this site can be way over sensitive to any type of criticism.)
Edit: Oh and the poster right above me is also very correct. All work that PE did was completely incompatible with the Cryptic Engine and couldn't be used. All they took was the concept art they thought might be useful which did save them some time I'm sure.
