Since this game (which i've been looking forward to for YEARS) is supposedly coming out soon, I really want to know what their scamming policy is. What will happen when I scam somebody out of an awesome weapon and such.
Will they go WoW on me and insta-ban-hammer-rape me?
Or will they go Eve and tell the person who got scammed "should have been more careful!"
From what i've heard about Darkfall, the most predictable method would be the Eve method, and i'd be both surprised AND disappointed if the mods stepped in and fought against scammers.
Personally, I'm hoping that they will use the eve method and say "should have been more careful", but I was curious as to if anybody knows what they will actually do with scammers?

either way i cant wait to start scamming
Very likely they'll just laugh and say "Nice show! Good job!" Personal repeated attacks will probably be frowned upon though.
Darkfall Travelogues!
Well first you would have to live through the scam, meaning the player you scammed doesn't manage to kill you and not only take back the item you scammed them out of but everything else you have on you. Then you have to live with the fact the community will probably grief you from then on.
After that, not really sure. Most player problems will be expected to be dealt with by the community.
Such and such ganked me ; ; , answer: Deal with it.
Such and such zerged me ; ; , answer: Deal with it.
ect.
If they had an anti scamming policy, which is very unlikely in a game such as this, it would be a very large negative to me. I probably would not play it.
We have no idea what the 'official' reaction might be. Heck, we dont even how most of the game works....
I would expect people to gank others, and to take thier stuff..... repeatedly. I expect this to be easier than scamming them, so much more common.
Having said that, if you get ganked every 10 min, how much do you think people will have invested in thier equipment? I suspect very little.
I remember reading that the only way you can get banned from the game is if you hack.
Don't ask fer a qoute, 'cuz I forgot what journal said it.
How would you scam others in DF? I'm assuming you mean something like asking someone for mats to craft them a weapon, but you just keep the mats? I don't see why they'd ban you, they're going for realism after all and people get scammed every day in real life.
This has me thinking, it'd be great if they institued some sort of jailing system in the game. Instead of killing a player you give them the chance to be put in the stocks for a little public humiliation, or throw them down in some dark dungeon and force them to serve their sentence in-game.
Hell, if you're a good enough of a scammer - they may hire you for the next MMO they decide to make.
Joking aside - I have a feeling that they will go with education over intervention - simular to Eve.
Can't scam people in Darkfall, theirs full loot. If you do scam them, chances are they'll kill your and get it back, and if you were stronger and win why wouldnt you just kill him in the first place and take everything?
Thank's for the hunting list, see you all in game!
Supposedly, its a PLAYER run world, not a developer run world. The idea from what I read is that if there are problems arising, then you are supposed to deal with them mainly yourself. (unless its something like a bot hack, thats different)
Hmm.. you answered a shout on /TRADE chat that someone would make you "Toby's Sword of Doom" for dirt cheap, only to find they say "ha-ha" at you and refuse to cough it up? Kill them.
-Someone in your favorite farming spot, hitting nodes that you are mining first and not sharing? Kill them.
-Someone insulting you over chats and emoing you with the /DROPTRAU emote? Track them down and kill them.
-Partied with a healer that stunk and wouldn't heal, or a dpser that kept pulling mob aggro, or a tank that wouldn't keep hate? Kill them.
It sounds harsh, but in reality, what happens in a "sandbox" continent like Africa? People just kill someone, end of conflict, and no law. The strong make the laws. There is no voting off the island. Now in reality, thats just wrong obviously cause thats real people. But this is how the real world started, it was an open PvP world.
But this is a GAME where its stated "Sandbox PvP", do what you want. People will take matters into their own hands. Some will do it just for kicks. Then others will form and kill them, and others will kill those guys. That right there, is the essence of a Player Vs Player world. And thats what will keep a game like this going. It won't appeal to everyone, but enough that it will GUARANTEE people will be fighting over something all the time, or plotting to fight.
It's not what you've been lead to believe from games like War, where everyone sits around waiting and then lines up like British Revolutionary War soldiers in a row in an orderly predictable fight, fighting for points for crappy gear at empty keeps against NPCs. Mythic designed it so that you must attack a player tank. Thats not sandbox. In a real battle, you'd attack anyone you wanted, not only this guy because if you didn't, he got insane buffs. That really sounds like fun to you?
While I am not partial to ganking personally, if I buy a game that says "Open Sandbox PvP", I'd be a fool to expect the makers to enforce ANY rules other than no botting/hacking. Thats why some games make servers where you kill anyone anytime. This is just PURE anarchy and chaos, which again is the essence of a pvp world.
People would not play nice in a game world with total freedom such as this. You'd have to sort of expect that going in. It's like going to a strip bar for a drink, then complaining that all these naked women are in there and its offensive.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Oh, one side BENEFIT to open killing: See a goldseller spamming?
Guess what their life expectancy will be?
"TO MICHAEL!"
The only time I see them stepping in, is if a players actual account is a acquired threw scamming.
It's a completely player run world so I would think that there won't be any scamming of the types you see in other PvE-centric games. This will be because the capability of dispensing law or chaos will be up to the players themselves. If you get scammed out of an item or gold just go and find the person that did it and kill them to get it back. Darkfall will rely on the players to police the game world. The GMs probably wont get involved in these types of situations. This is how it's been in every other fully open PvP game I've ever played anyways.

Sure, because if you can, you should right? Yes, lets keep perpetuating the shitty parts of life into the things we use to escape the shitty parts of life. Brilliant.
A dyslexic man walked into a bra.
The answer to those that whine about being scammed should be simple: open PvP, full loot. Any issue that can be addressed in game should be left in game. Only exception would be some type of hax/exploit.
Why would you even want to scam someone other than just for the sake of being a douchebag?
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
i dont see scamming being a big issue in this game seeing as that people will lose equipment/belongings all the time so theres no real difference from someone ganking another player. infact the only players who would actually be hurt by scamming are the scammers themselves as word starts to spread around among the better guilds what players will ruin their reputations. although reputations dont mean much as they used to anymore, they still count for some if players dont want to drag down the rest of their guild.
For me it's got nothing to do with wanting to scam people, it's the principle that if people want to they should be allowed.
It's a ffa pvp game, as far as I'm concerned scamming is pvp.
It is possible that pickpocketing is also in the game so you can take peoples items out their bags without them knowing, this pvp as well.
See, this is where you have to be more specific. What rule breaking? Which rule? And is the 'rule' made by developers or the community.
There's an unwritten rule in MMOs. that if someone is farming a node, you don't come up and start hitting it as well. Thats just rude and breaks the 'rule'. Well, some people say too bad and they don't 'own' the node. So now you have a dispute and how do you handle it?
Well, in WoW, War, or any other games, the developers made the node unable to be hit by more than one person, thereby removing a conflict. Wimpy way out. In Darkfall.. you want that node? Kill me. Kill him. Kill them all.
That my friend, is open PvP sandbox. If you were a medievil guy hunting in the forest or chopping down a tree, and another guy comes along and starts chopping your tree... are you gonna pray to the MMO god to smite him? Run back to the village and get the magistrate? QQ? No. You'd kill him dead.
This is that medievil world in case you haven't been looking at the screenshots.
"TO MICHAEL!"
None. Thats it exactly. The feeling of being powerful. Maybe in the real non-game world, he works at Burger King in the back cleaning hoppers. Or maybe she's a gal Friday who has to get coffee for everyone all day. Or maybe they are kids in high school who are a Columbine just waiting to happen. Who knows? Who cares about the psychology of 'why'?
Darkfall will actually DEPEND on a segment of these people. Why? Well, just as you guys want to be "good" guys and don't gank, imagine if eveyone didn't gank? Then everyone would sit around crafting all day and fishing. It would be Happyland. You need conflict in a PvP game. Its how they work. Developers have to INVENT strife in normal pvp games "Ok, heres the story. You guys hate these guys forever. Now you have to kill them." Thats it. No real animosity other than cause they say so.
But if a "douchebag" says he wants to kill you, slave you, rip you off.. now you have a REAL reason to log on. You want to find everyone in the "Douchebag United" guild and kill them whenever. And anyone they know. Their family etc. It builds REAL reason to PvP.. not fighting for points or gear. Just "I hate that guy.. everytime I see them I am planting their faces".
So you must have gankers to shoot for.. Or if you are a ganker, you must have goodie goodies.
Gankers will never overwhelm the good guys. They never do. Name a game where the few gankers ruled it? Most guilds hunted them down like dogs.
"TO MICHAEL!"
It won't be anarchy, it will run on the principle of might is right.
I think different people have different views on what is acceptable in a game. To me ganking me with overwhelming force when I am low on health is not a personal insult or mean, it is part of the game. I can do the same to anyone else even though I rarely will. Everyone is in the same boat.
Wherever there are humans society emerges, in Darkfall it will be no different. It may be a brutal society but there will be different groups with different aims and you can join one that suits your play style. If you have a particular goal then there will be other people that share the same goals and you can group together to achieve them.
If you view getting killed and looted regularly as showing the worst in people then don't play, personally I view it as healthy competition.
