"Toned Down" Graphics

AmatayAmatay Member Posts: 170

I've been reading about this all over the place and decided to try and somewhat maybe ease some peoples minds. People who are like me and have pre-ordered but are not in beta, and get a little shook by all the negatives that are always being churned up.

I love Doom 3. I think the graphics in that game are phenomenal. That lighting is obviously it's main point, but even how the textures reflect the light of your flashlight is incredible. However, my machine is not the highest of running machines, so I can't play doom 3 on ultra high quality.

The good news for me is that even on almost the lowest of settings, Doom 3 still looks great. It's still dark and spooky. It still draws me deeply into it's atmosphere and it still scares the crap out of me.

IMO, EQ2 is going to be the same way. Whether or not the graphics are set to be top notch, they will still be better than the graphics on ALL the MMORPG's that I have ever played. And this is a good thing. And I absolutely recall hearing more than once from SOE interviews and FAQ that they are working very closely with Nvidia to develope the most cutting edge of graphics for this game.

So I ask this. IF graphics have indeed been toned down, why is that bad? To me it only means that they are trying to keep our machines from literally burning up like bad toasters, AND, when we finally do upgrade our machines, the higher graphical settings are still there so the game will only continue to look better in the future. People have complained that the water does not look nearly as good as it does in the movies they have downloaded. That FPS is way too low and all sorts of whatevers. But since when is having a graphic engine that exceeds our own equipment bad? To me it means that I'll be enjoying some of the most cutting edge technology for years to come. But that's just me I guess.

What do you guys think?

Here's a pic of my predator sneaking up to a zombie.

It was done with "low" background and "medium" character graphics...

and it was done on an old 4600 128 TI card

I dont think you have much to worry about image

The graphics are top notch, no doubt.. they're just a little 'flat'.

I have it cranked up to 1280x1024 with high settings.  There is still a notch above high, but I figured high was good enough ;)

When people say the graphics are dumbed down, they're mainly talking about the pics and early vids back when the game was first announced, the pics werent actually ingame. Best referance is the female paladin in golden armor. But, your right, as is the graphics are very well done image.

I can only imagine what that deleted post was since the guy has a Warcraft pic for an avatar. I'm sure it was all positive stuff.

I can't believe that those graphics are turned down, that's great!

    I can't wait...

that sneak fade thing is cool looking too.

The graphics seem to be very similar to SWG which had a lot 2D vegitation. I think the biggest reason for this is there isn't a system available yet that could actually render full 3D vegitation on this scale and have a decient FPS.

  • EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

    the vegitation is very 3D.

Please take note what I said...the background was turned down to its lowest setting possible....

It has been posted MANY times by the devs and others that the graphics HAVE NOT been "turned down". They have only rearranged the settings and all people need to do is readjust their graphics settings to be at the same level they were.

Here's a good example to use to prove what a lot of beta people are saying and people in general. If you look at the screenshot above, the characters do look good, but the world itself is very lacking. Playing EQ2 felt like playing EQ1 atmosphere wise because of the well lack of it. It felt like I was running over a green carpet half the time, with graphics set up to near max. The world is just kind of poor in comparison to Dark Age of Camelot for example which has lots of ground level vegetation and debris adding to the world, you feel like your running through a living forest unlike areas in EQ2 which has more or less trees and green. While the above screenie is of a plains area with the background graphics set to low, it still can be used, but look over other screen shots and listen to other Beta testers opinions and many of them say the same thing.

And to bad mouth WoW about customer service and launch time ect is poor as Sony has not had a great history in that area, with games such as Star Wars Galaxies an Empire Delayed and Buggy as Hell image. Let's just hope both Everquest 2 and WoW have relatively clean launches.

Umm Not what this beta tester has been saying, my wife even likes the graphics in EQII and she has always maintained that the graphics  MMORPG's pretty much look  like s**t in general, and I have played or tested just about every mainstream one since UO.

    lol

now that's what I call vegitation

People remember what I said in my first post! I turned the graphics for background all the way to the lowest setting. Of course you're not going to see wheat flowing in the wind with the settings that low

just a little more info: here's 2 sets of pictures - the three pictures are in order: very high performance (lowest graphics), high graphics (what i play with) and the highest possible graphics. please note that i had to lighten the screen shots.

Oh awesome, that's the same low-rent card I have. Are you running stable with it ? I was worried I'd have to run out and buy a new card before launch cuz the character creation program keeps crashing on me. . .

Yes, it's been very good to me. You might want to check your ram though. Low ram will make the game crash. SOE says that the minimum is 512, but 1 gig is best. I posed this on another thread, but here's my FPS on a few zones in the game.

    High Graphics:

The Ruins - small instanced zone

    Idle - 20

    Fight -  17

    Crowded - 16

Commonlands - huge and known for laggyness

    Idle - 17

    Fight/Crowded - 11

    Extreme performance:

    The Ruins

    Idle - 40-45

    Fight - 40

    Fight/Crowded - 38

    The Commonlands

    Idle - 40

    Fight - 37

    Crowded - 35

I usually go Balanced Settings or High Performance in a full group, then go High Quality when in a duo or solo. I always make sure that Flora is on, but Flora Displacement is off (for some reason that really steals frame rate). Flora does wonders for turning the world from flat to lush. I also keep textures medium to high on all of them.

But most of the time I just hit the main profiles on the Performance tab and let the game decide on what to turn on or off.

    I have:

    Athlon 64 3500+
    Asus A8V Deluxe
    1024MB Corsair XMS 3200LLPT
    Radeon X800 PRO 256MB
    SB Audigy Platinum

That's about the same I keep mine at. In the Commonlands, I will take it to Balanced, or High Peformence when grouping. Although the flora thing annoys me. It hides stuff from my view, so I always have them off no matter what settings I have. LOL. Maybe I'm just used to playing that way. image
