Starsider was a hot bed of activeity today and I think the server transfers in the near future played a part in that. I saw hundreds of people all day long and it had to be one of the most active days since the NGE was forced upon us. I pvp'ed, ran instances and crafted special orders today. Must say I had a very star-warsy day in my sandbox !!! Now a forcast Citys will be over thrown and conquerd by those moving over and takening charge. I know of two citys that new owner ship shall emerge. Glorius!
Just a few respectful observations:
The comments "I had a very star-warsy day in my sandbox!!!" coupled with the signature "the greatest story ever told, yours" are going to evoke a reaction.
Online jargon isn't really my forte, but if I understand the term "flame-bait" correctly, you couldn't find better bait for these waters.
What do I mean? Well, the pre-cu game was based on "sand-box" architecture. It was an open world simulation that gave you tools to create and tell your own story and build your own community. The line "the greatest story ever told, yours" was the opening line to this game, and is well remembered by its players.
By design, and via unethical methods that led to threats of legal action and a massive refund campaign, this sand-box game was overwritten. People lost the characters, stories and communities they had built and invested in for a two year period. Why was this done to them? To make the game more "Star-warsy" is an exact quote from LEC/SOE at the time.
This thread seems like the quintessential example of flame-bait to me, designed to evoke a negative reaction and likely to set people at each other's throats.
If the OP had simply talked about a really enjoyable time on his server, without the (well-known) hot button phrases, the thread would probably have played out differently.
To my fellow gamers on either side of the debate: I think you've been set up. O.k., I'm going to look away from the resulting carnage now.

I understand where you're coming from friend. I would be angry too if I still paid for a product as horrible as SWG currently is. How awful it has to be to knowingly pay $15 every month for access to the single worst MMO on the market. You have my sympathy.

I would encourage you to read back on some of the posts on these forums.
You will likely find out the following:
- People with a legitimate interest on finding out about the game are encouraged to try it out.
- Some people express a legitimate curiosity about the NGE debacle, since many articles and reviews are out there for people to read.
- Some people here are known to provoke and flame former players and spread innacurate information about the current state of the game - they are suprisingly more active on these forums than some former players.
- Most of the discussions that go on here are about current SOE practices (eg TCG scam) or events affecting SWG now (eg server merg... ehm... limited free transfers).
- PRE-CU is generally discussed in terms of the features it had and opens debates as to why are these missing on current games and why they were appealing to many (this generally prompts an attack of people like you with the "get over it" card).
Of course you have NO/ZERO/NADA screenshots to support your CLAIMS... What a joke. We all know SWG is dead. We've all logged on for the past 3 years to look at the corpse.

I predict 2009 isn't going to start with a bang for SWG, especially as the lead designers/producers answer to solving low populations was to spinelessly expect the paying customers to do the dirty work for them in the form of free character transfers. But hey that's the thing about SWG, if you're on a populated server you can afford to wear your rose tinted glasses and pretend everything is swell. But unfortunately there are several veterans who don't share your enthusiasm especially the ones who have been told that their home server is a transfer and not destination server.

I don't consider myself a 'fanboy' tbh. I like SWG, I enjoy the huge worlds, I like the star wars universe, and there's a lot to do. It's not perfect, certainly not for everyone, but I find it fun.
As for claims about populations, I am not qualified to judge since I have only played on one server - Euro Farstar. However, I can say with honesty that while the population is a lot less than at launch, there are easily enough people on this server to make the game world feel lived in.
The problem is that people who simply hate the game and take every opportunity to slag it off, often use these forums to claim that the game is dead, that the servers are empty. This is simply not true on Farstar. It's not bursting at the seams, but there are plenty of people to talk to and if you join a good guild there are always people around to help and group if necessary.

I think one thing about your posts that has people in a tiff is the hot button phrases like "Star-warsy, sandbox, the greatest story ever told, yours" etc.. If you don't know what I mean, feel free to scroll up and read my last post.
I returned to the thread because I saw you had posted. I thought maybe you'd take a different approach, but I guess not. Well that's your prerogative of course.
I think the other thing that gets people in a tiff is when you try to market this game with dishonesty. What I mean specifically is that EVE is a sandbox game. No doubt about that, and yet you deny the existence of such games.
Of course, this is additionally inflammatory because of the history of dishonest marketting associated with SWG (e.g. unlock a jedi when the unlock system had yet to be coded completely, incomplete quests are working as intended, and the whole ToOW scandal.)
It's very unlikely, in my view, that you will win points for the game you enjoy by using inflammatory hot button phrases in your posts, and by saying things that most people will recognize at a glance are simply not true.
If our guild forum wasn't private, I'd invite you to have a look at honest posts that talk about what is currently fun in SWG. No insults, no name-calling, no inflammatory comments, no lying, just honest feedback about what people currently enjoy. Nice stuff really, and I'm always glad to hear about friends having a good time. Of course, they also don't try to cover up serious problems, past and present. Like I said, very honest and enjoyable to read.

SWG is NOT a sandbox, it's class/level linear progression. Not even close to a sandbox.
Also, EVE is the ONLY sandbox on the market. It actually is a sandbox. Nice try at some more viral marketing though.

Everything you are listing, was in game years before the NGE. It was always been there, except with a much better combat system, A LOT more professions, greater profession diversity, and most of all a much larger population.

This game isn't better. It's just been dumbed down enough to the point you like it.

Probably because of the statement in red. Claims the game is better, then lists everything that was in the game before as the reason of why it is better now.

Just a few respectful observations:
The comments "I had a very star-warsy day in my sandbox!!!" coupled with the signature "the greatest story ever told, yours" are going to evoke a reaction.
Online jargon isn't really my forte, but if I understand the term "flame-bait" correctly, you couldn't find better bait for these waters.
What do I mean? Well, the pre-cu game was based on "sand-box" architecture. It was an open world simulation that gave you tools to create and tell your own story and build your own community. The line "the greatest story ever told, yours" was the opening line to this game, and is well remembered by its players.
By design, and via unethical methods that led to threats of legal action and a massive refund campaign, this sand-box game was overwritten. People lost the characters, stories and communities they had built and invested in for a two year period. Why was this done to them? To make the game more "Star-warsy" is an exact quote from LEC/SOE at the time.
This thread seems like the quintessential example of flame-bait to me, designed to evoke a negative reaction and likely to set people at each other's throats.
If the OP had simply talked about a really enjoyable time on his server, without the (well-known) hot button phrases, the thread would probably have played out differently.
To my fellow gamers on either side of the debate: I think you've been set up. O.k., I'm going to look away from the resulting carnage now.

I understand where you're coming from friend. I would be angry too if I still paid for a product as horrible as SWG currently is. How awful it has to be to knowingly pay $15 every month for access to the single worst MMO on the market. You have my sympathy.

You only have to post once making a positive statement about swg and you'll be flamed. It's deliberate of course - drive away anyone who likes the game so people will think swg is completely without merit, all servers have 3 players, and anyone posting here who says they likes the game works for sony.

I would encourage you to read back on some of the posts on these forums.
You will likely find out the following:
- People with a legitimate interest on finding out about the game are encouraged to try it out.
- Some people express a legitimate curiosity about the NGE debacle, since many articles and reviews are out there for people to read.
- Some people here are known to provoke and flame former players and spread innacurate information about the current state of the game - they are suprisingly more active on these forums than some former players.
- Most of the discussions that go on here are about current SOE practices (eg TCG scam) or events affecting SWG now (eg server merg... ehm... limited free transfers).
- PRE-CU is generally discussed in terms of the features it had and opens debates as to why are these missing on current games and why they were appealing to many (this generally prompts an attack of people like you with the "get over it" card).
My money is still on the whole Zurr En Arrh slant.

I don't consider myself a 'fanboy' tbh. I like SWG, I enjoy the huge worlds, I like the star wars universe, and there's a lot to do. It's not perfect, certainly not for everyone, but I find it fun.
As for claims about populations, I am not qualified to judge since I have only played on one server - Euro Farstar. However, I can say with honesty that while the population is a lot less than at launch, there are easily enough people on this server to make the game world feel lived in.
The problem is that people who simply hate the game and take every opportunity to slag it off, often use these forums to claim that the game is dead, that the servers are empty. This is simply not true on Farstar. It's not bursting at the seams, but there are plenty of people to talk to and if you join a good guild there are always people around to help and group if necessary.

The game is actually better now than it was during the CU, yes there are less professions I miss that what you complainers fail ro relize is this is the last sandbox game out there THE LAST.
This game still has the BEST CRAFTING and RESOURCE SPAWNING there nothing else like it.
This Game has Space content learning to master a X-WING is awesome! This game has player owned GunBoats that you can customize like a player home. Player HOMES are like no other game!
The added content is fun they are adding more all the time and guess what its PART OF the $15.00 monthly fee EXTRA CONTENT every 3 months!
PVP is fun battles are quick and final not like those long 1/2 hour fights of pre-nge battles lasting 15min are rare.
The game as plays today is a very solid game it is a different game but a very good game I tried WarHammer, AoC, EQ2, Vanguard, and I find I enjoy SWG the most.
You keep dishing the NGE yea it sucked BUT THIS GAME is no LONGER the NGE and some of you just make up crap. Get the interface mod which gives you the old interface which I perfer and you just might actually enjoy playing again people are coming back new people are subbing you can't stop it.
SWG is on its way to be a AAA title again!

I think one thing about your posts that has people in a tiff is the hot button phrases like "Star-warsy, sandbox, the greatest story ever told, yours" etc.. If you don't know what I mean, feel free to scroll up and read my last post.

I think the other thing that gets people in a tiff is when you try to market this game with dishonesty. What I mean specifically is that EVE is a sandbox game. No doubt about that, and yet you deny the existence of such games.
Of course, this is additionally inflammatory because of the history of dishonest marketting associated with SWG (e.g. unlock a jedi when the unlock system had yet to be coded completely, incomplete quests are working as intended, and the whole ToOW scandal.)
It's very unlikely, in my view, that you will win points for the game you enjoy by using inflammatory hot button phrases in your posts, and by saying things that most people will recognize at a glance are simply not true.
If our guild forum wasn't private, I'd invite you to have a look at honest posts that talk about what is currently fun in SWG. No insults, no name-calling, no inflammatory comments, no lying, just honest feedback about what people currently enjoy. Nice stuff really, and I'm always glad to hear about friends having a good time. Of course, they also don't try to cover up serious problems, past and present. Like I said, very honest and enjoyable to read.
SWG is NOT a sandbox, it's class/level linear progression. Not even close to a sandbox.
Also, EVE is the ONLY sandbox on the market. It actually is a sandbox. Nice try at some more viral marketing though.
