AOC should I?

BroGamingPageBroGamingPage Member UncommonPosts: 492

I have an extra 50.00 lying around at christmas time. I can buy AOC Tomorrow if I want. I'm really looking for a game to get into around the holidays. Lately all I've been playing is CSS and haven't gotten into an actual game in along time. I'm still waiting for Face Of Mankind to come back. I use to be a big player on Wow, Warhammer, and use to play everquest and requiem.

I'm looking for something fresh. Should I give Age of Conan a try? I heard it's really improved now. Are the servers crowded? Please give me your opinion on Age Of Conan or any game you suggest I play that's around 50.00. Thanks!

1 more question, what kind of computer do you need for Age Of Conan?

From what Ihear AOC has become solid gameplay wise.  Content is still a touch short in high levels.  It is still fast to level up.

Crafting is more complete and more useful now.

Personally I don't want to give Funcom any cash after their fiasco launch of this game and the way the company displays itself.  But as for a game,  AOC is supposedly good now, with decent PVP.

honestly i wouldnt even waste my time with it. it is too quick to get to endgame, and then when you get there its disappointing. i would say get lich king or wait on some of the up-and-coming mmos this new year.

Sure, go ahead. you can find it a lot cheaper than 50 bucks too if you look around.

The game is good now but are still missing some content on lvl 70+, however have they already patched in 2 80 dungeons on the testserver, they should go live after the holidays and together with the gig zone that will follow the with the patch after that the game should finally be up to content.

The launch was way too early, it should have launched now but everything seems in place now even though the crafting and the PvP minigames still need some buffs.

But if you have a low end PC with a single core and a 7000GF card or less you should use your money on something else, Guildwars and Wow are good for older computers.

The only thing wrong with this game now is the population. Server merges are happening though, so thats about to be fixed, and ill re-sub.

Thank you everyone for all of your replies. I may just give this game a go. They have a new team working on development now? Or is it the same team that started it? Just wondering.

Are my specs. I'm playing on a laptop with a cooling fan under it, lol. 60gb free on it atm, should I give this game a shot or no? I will only be playing it on my laptop for a while...When are the server merges occurring?

    I'm getting for Christmas.

Now would be a good time. DX10, 2 new dungeons, and server mergers are right around the corner.

I mean...you'll spend like 25 bucks on the sub and the game together...you can't go wrong. If you don't like it, well you don't need to resub. So yah...give it a go.

EDIT: server merges should be happening in January or February.

25? I went to the AOC Site and it says 40.00 with a free month I'm guessing and a free in-game items thanks to the Holidays. Direc2drive is saying 39.95 as well, so....anywhere cheaper? Don't really want to fight the holiday crowds if I don't have to so if I can order it online for any cheaper that would be great, lol.

Btw, nice about the server mergers. That should help. It sounds like this game is finally being worked on right and within a few years may get players back as well as newcomers and could start seeing a high amount of players playing.

I've heard that certain places have it on sale or in bargain bins for like 10 bucks. You might want to ask on the AoC forums.

I have heard this too, but i just very recently tried to find any of these bargain AoC boxes. Nope, nothing nada. The best I founds was 39.95 in fact (same os on that AoC page ). I bought a copy as X-mas gift for a WoW playing friend of mine. He has been stuck in that stuff for such a long time now that it's just hopeless to get him out of it. I have hopes though, that the smell of a new gamebox shall bring him out of the trance. If so, we'll have plenty fun time playing. Maybe I'll even make a new alt.

If you prefer pve, don't mind getting bored in 1-2 months and find a cheap AoC box, then go for it. But make sure you pick the most popular server there is because even those are almost empty in lower levels.

If you on the other hand like challenging and meaningful pvp or want to find a "home" for a longer period of time, then I suggest you spend that money on something else.

OP, just to let you know, if you take advice from this person you take advice that never played the game (or was it played like 5 moths back).

When it comes to cheapest possible AoC box I found that in a retail store for like 39 USD. That is not fare from FCs holiday sales price (39.95), so why not go for the snow mammoth. Ohh, and yes I do recommend AoC as one of the best gaming experiences out there. I came from WAR, which also was not a bad game, but I must say AoC beats everything out there in it's current form.

It's a great game as long as you stay away from the PvP servers which have become a really big suckie mess since the murder system was introduced.

Go with a PvE server and its the best game of its type.

There are some stores where I live that are selling it for $24.99 until the usual holiday period sales along with other similar games. I believe Target US store had a sale on where you could find it for $10 on NA Black Friday.

Ebay is the place to go. Collectors edition for $10 w/ free shipping. Regular game is $5.

But you must be warned. Game is great right out of the box but after lvl 20 its all downhill.

Yes, I strongly recommend you to buy AOC.

This game has improved ALOT since lunch and is now really cool and fun.

Your computer should run AOC with no problem, but you will not be abel to max the game, but Medium settings will definitely work perfect, maybe even medium/High.

Yes, the new patch will be really Awesome !

That's because running Tortage over and over and over again makes for a very unpleasant experience. In actuality, Tortage is one of the most detailed and well made experience in the game. But since there is no alternative starting point nor storyline, it gets old really fast.

I couldn't advise anyone to play this game. There are very serious underlying design flaws with AOC and no sign of any "smart" underlying design plan for the future. FC has shown over and over that they are incompetent in terms of basic design elements and incapable of executing a consistent plan:

    1. The gathering system which controls city building, which in turn controls the entire crafting system is flawed in its essence. Intelligent gamers won't PAY to whack on a mine node 10,000 times to advance their characters or guilds. A mindless gathering system sits at the core of the AOC social system with no fix in sight. High irony in light of the nature of the Conan lore.

    2. Sieges are linear and boring. After you have done a few, they all shape up the same. This comes from FC biting off more than they can chew with respect to Battlekeeps. Instead of starting small with pvp player asset structures, they immediately went to gigantic battlekeeps which can only be built one way and attacked one way. No fun. Even 6 y.o. Shadowbane has a better siege system.

    3. FC has shown that they are unable/unwilling to act on exploits quickly, and instead of doing so intelligently, nullify lots of honest player effort with cataclysmic changes. Bad faith. Am talking here about the gem changes and hamhanded pvp exp rollbacks. Spend time working towards a group or individual goal in AOC and take the risk of having the effort nullified capriciously.

    4. Endgame raiding dungeons are uncreative and boring. Most players are getting tired of uber mobs at the end of a trash run who nullify almost all player skills and can only be beaten one way in conformance with a linear script. Moreover, the poorly designed loot system ensures that lots of loot that players execute these scripts for over and over goes to waste.

    5. Obtaining the pvp gear is a MASSIVE grind. The pvp minigames are a poorly designed few maps with little replay appeal. Obtaining the basic pvp gear will take hundreds and hundreds of hours of grinding. This game was not supposed to be gear centric, yet like almost every single aspect of this game, the devs have lied once again. The dishonesty of the devs and publisher of this game to its playerbase have been monumental. This game will go down in MMO history as a textbook of how not to service and treat customers.

    6. Class balance in the game in both PvE and PvP is laughable. There are many broken, imbalanced skills in the combat system in need of reworking, and there are indeed "haves and have nots" among the classes. The "revolutionary" combat system of AOC is basically, as others have said, a "password protected" attack system. FCs attempts at class balance have been flawed and puerile instead of rich and well thought out.

    7. All the above, together with many other issues, have chased away the dedicated MMO players. I watched guild after guild leave en masse from my medium pop server (there never were any high pop servers in AOC due to another design flaw of starting out with too many servers). This game left such a bad taste in so many mouths, that I don't see it ever truly recovering. If you want a very light casual game for mostly single play, AOC is OK for that, but it will never again be a game with a core of serious gamers.

AOC is a ship with neither a captain nor a rudder, and none of the recent changes cause me to deviate from this opinion one iota. It runs better, true, but that's about it...

  • AntariousAntarious Member UncommonPosts: 2,846

If you are interested this game can be found "cheap" even in retail...  Personally I've been back for a few days.  I'm actually having "fun" and there is a good amount of chat.. even guilds that are fighting each other are talking in general.. more like the community my old DAoC server had.

I suppose this varies greatly by server so your experience could vary greatly.

People trash the game.. I'll put it another way..

When AoC came out I could play it and have a blast until at least level 20.  Every server was packed..

As compared to this other game that when I hit level 12 it started to suck and my high pop server was devoid of life.. and/or community.

So for "current" MMO's.. its hard for me to say its "worse" or "total crap".

I wish there was "more" but I've always felt that way.

Regardless the best way to have an opinion is to form one yourself and not ask on forums.. you'll get people like me giving you answers.. that's bad.

    Hey all,

I thank you all for your comments and opinions on Age Of Conan. From the sounds of it I think alot of people are just really bitter on how things started out for AOC and they feel they were mistreated. But, sounds like that was thanks to a few people who worked on a game who were fired and now it sounds like the game is coming in to place.

I enjoyed Warhammer but feel like it has a lot of stability issues and memory leakage. It was always crashing, the casting looked very mediocre, and the game itself didn't feel complete. However, I loved the Zealot class and if it wasn't for lag and memory leakage which was causing the lag and crashes, I would have stayed on Warhammer. I am a big Lineage 2 fan so I think I'm looking for something fresh with nice Graphics. I'm a big graphic player and from the sounds of it up to level 20 in AOC Is a blast and it sounds like it's kind of unique up to level 20. Then, it goes to meidocre gaming but even then sounds like it would be ok. If the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is pretty decent it's worth a try.

With so many mixed opinions and what this game has gone through and the amount of players actually giving it another shot, I have no choice; I'm going to go ahead and try it. I've already told my parents I want it for Christmas. I'm 21 so it's not about me anymore but about the kids of course. They laughed but I'm pretty sure they got it for me, if they didn't I'll be getting it Friday regardless.

I'm looking forward to playing Age Of Conan and am eager to give it a try. Hopefully, this laptop will play it fine. Please feel free to continue commenting on the game, I'll continue reading all opinions on it. Any suggestions on a server when I get the game? Thanks and have a great Christmas!

Bingo. I wouldn't call it mediocre after lvl 20, some of the dungeons are really nice.

Funny that a GFX fan (I am one too) own a laptop BTW, not even the best ones comes close to a half desent tabletop.

To be honest, I agree. I wanted something portable where I can travel with it. I found myself playing Counter Strike Source in the airport while I was waiting on my plane for 2 hours last year, lmfao. I do kind of regret purchasing it but at the same time it's nice to travel with. It plays games well but I need to invest in a gaming Desktop but just haven't had the money to do so, yet. Once I get 400-600.00 sitting I'm going to start investing in a nice gaming desktop. I gave my old gaming desktop to my brother because his desktop got hit by lightning and ye....I can live until the middle of this year, lol.

I can't wait to try it though. I'm looking forward to something fresh. Sounds to me on many of the new reviews I've read that AOC is a breath of fresh air, for the most part.
