Anyone plan on renting a server for WoW? I know my guild is.

Well, we can do that right? I mean, is it considered a 3rd party program that has the possibility of bannage?...

oops , post wrong ===
Maybe it is being rented to host the forums for his guild?
Post removed, now that i've had people kind enough to explain what ventrilo is.

You apparently have no idea what Ventrilo is...
Has nothing to do with the Serverside software. Vebtrilo is a voice communications program, completely seperate and independant of WoW or any other game. Also nothing illegal about using it unless WoW has some really strict and insane Code of Conduct and ToS.
I know my guild will be starting our 100-User server soon. We're a multi-game guild so it's not really for any one game, but to answer the original question, yes, at least one other guild will be using it.

I'm sorry; I thought more people would know what Vent was. It's like Skype or any other messaging program. You assign to activate the mic and talk to whoever is on. It costs different amounts according to how many people can access it. I.E., 15, 25, 50,100, 200 people. There are servers you have to purchase/rent/whatever to use the program. Vent just eliminates the typing to your guild/friends in any game. My clan used it in Lineage][ and it worked awesome. I just know that there can be strict rules in the world of MMORPGs and didn't to risk my account.

I didn't know what it was either.

Hope that url is right. Seemed to be what you were talking about. I cant touch anything like that as I have bad habits like humming along to things and absorbing accents then mimicing them poorly. Sounds like ya'll really get into the game though so I'm sure you make better use of it than I ever would.
yah i find ventrilo or teamspeak are vital for pvpin with ur guild in my opinion ^_^ much easier talkin than typin hehe
and its handy for big raids as well ^_^ if a guild is good and experienced they will be usin ventrilo or teamspeak ^^

They wont even be able to detect you running any programs unless it's sending information to WoW, which it isn't. This is the same reason they don't pick up things like msn as 3rd party programs.
I used to host Ventrilo server regularly untill I got a router and port forwarding didn't work. But it does indeed help immensly with guild stuff and vital communication in times where you don't have time to stop and type. The only major problem I saw is everyone yelling "heal me" repeatadly while your trying to figure out which of the bunch of screaming idiots actualy is in need of healing, or just trying to tell them your out of mp.

My guild doesn't have idiots.
Yea, looks as though my income just dropped that much more. 15 bucks a month for a server. Well, 5 of my friends are chipping in so it's not that bad. We're going to start out at 50 members and work our way up if we need too. I am cunducting my clan very strictly. Any yahoos acting like morons will be muted. It's that easy. But, I guess we all have our moments.

Wolvaroo lol
usually for big raids, only the guild leader and maybe 2 more person could speak(they just named the target usually in pvp so everyone focused fire), the rest were muted, to avoid u know everyone shoutin at each other stuff like "u idiot u let me die(to the healer)", etc lol
in lineage 2 were raids and pvp fights sometimes were like a couple of hundred ppl... and castle sieges as well.... its a necessity to have this voice communication programs ^_^

My guild has been using ventrilo for about a year and a half, originally it was TeamSpeak.
Ventrilo has better sound and easier to understand when you have multiple people speak. We have I think its a 120 slot server for our guild, and so far the new ventrilo is pretty good. We've had around 100 people in vent and the program seems to handle it just fine. Multiple multiple times better than TS2.

And yeah, you dont say heal me, you say something like 'heal demon-surge' talking in Me's and I's is just unorganized and sloppy/stupid.
And I believe its 10 cents a slot. Meaning if you have 60 slots, thats 60 max people on at one time. Its pretty good.

Same here.. I've talked to a lot of guild wanting to have ventrilo or teamspeak servers.
I think over the last four years, voice communication has came from almost non-existant, to essential.
1. You can save so much time by using voice instend of typing
2. You can avoid so much slow reaction and/or confusion in PvE or PvP
3. You do much more thing at the same time. (exemple while you bid on auctions houses / trade things with other players, you don 't have to read/write in the guildchat channel at the SAME time, and than get a /tell from one of ur RL friend, and another /tell at the same time from some guy you grouped with days ago. etc.. etc..)
4. Also since it's not integrated to the game, while you aren't playing you can stay connected to it to know what's going on if you want...
lots and lots of advantage.
Disadvantage tought is looking like a retard talking to your computer.. but ohwell.. .lol
Thinking about adding Ventrilio on it as well and go through a different Port to test it out.

in my experience ventrilo is better than teamspeak ^_^

Yeah but isnt teamspeak free?
I will tolerate poor quality if it doesnt cost anything to use. It makes sense that ventrilo is better if they are going to charge us for it.

"Rehab is for quitters."
It definitely is free. I had one set up for my SG in City Of Heroes when I played it. And I totally agree about tolerating the quality.
I've been on a few Ventrilo servers with friends, and the quality doesn't seem too much different to me. Definitely not enough difference to make me pay for it. One friend lives on Vent, and he says TS has improved a LOT since he used it last.
I'm not sure about Vent, but TS is super easy to set up as a server.
