Pretty hard to answer yes or no on that one. It depends on what KIND of gankfest. If it ends up in a FFA slug-fest it will be really dull. If it sorts out in one way or another, and makes people afraid of doing so, it's another story.
I doubt full loot will scare people off. Since if there are no ÜBER items what are people really afraid to loose? The chance of gaining on the other hand is worth dying for, alot of times. Well I really hope that won't be an issue.

It all depends in how the newbie areas are setup and how well protected they are by decent NPC armies to protect them from high skill gank squads.
If the newbie areas are not well protected, then you can fully count on that gank squads will be ganking newbie areas 24/7 for kicks turning this game into one big boring gankfest.
Gotta leave the newbie area sometime, unless you try to play the game entirely from the safe zones. If you aren't into ganking then why drop the money down to play the game for 5 minutes and cancel?
Why so carebear?
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

You don't know what you talk about and appearently have no clue either. This has nothing to do with being carebear at all.
Protected newbie areas are nessessary to give new players a chance to learn to play, skill up a bit, before they start entering the big bad world out there.
If newbie areas aren't well protected, all new players joining later on will be relentlessly ganked 24/7 (read griefing) and quit the game out of frustration shortly after. Pretty much killing the game and thus company profit.
EVE Online created secure Empire Space for a reason you know.
If they hadn't EVE Online wouldn't even be around anymore today and be that successful as it is today.

I really hate when people just make stuff up and call it fact.. Hell, by your logic There would never be any new players in games like counter-strike.

If new players can't even get out of town w/o dying, while some players will stick it out, expect the player base to be rather small as most people won't put up with it.
I know in my case, I'm pretty much counting on DF's reported "very large" game world to permit me to lose myself in the wilds, and thereby avoid most of the ganking.

If it comes down to im naked in town getting my ass wooped and cant progress my situation then no ill find another game, or do something away from the pc.
Asheron's Call UO pre-trammel From what I remember of Lineage 2.. And.. just because you CAN kill someone, doesn't mean everyone will.
UO Pre-trammel most assuredly had newbie protected areas. I played from launch. Barring the countless bugs and eploits (muhgawd, was that game a piece of crap at launch, but we had nothing really to compare it to), if you attacked anyone in, or near, a town, the guards would magically teleport and kill you, leaving your corpse to be looted by the person you attacked and any other nearby vultures. (Thus leading to players tricking newbs into attacking them so they could be looted.)
The moongates were also guarded, to prevent people from ganking anyone who had just teleported in and might still be lagging. The Abbey at Yew was guarded, as well. (Yew was so spread out that it was a great place for newbies -- almost all of it was guarded, but it was large enough you could hunt, farm, chop wood, etc.)
Wait and see. I won't be getting this of the shelf at day 1 that's for sure. Way too many unknown variables to merit a buy like that.
To answer you're question, no. Been playing too many mmo's in the past that had all those happy ganknuts ruining my gameplay. I don't bloody care what you call it, when you repeatedly kill someone in a row you're harrasing that person and is just out to ruin his/hers day. That is why I stay away from most games that feature open pvp nowadays and pvp servers. Pvp needs to be under strict control and have rules that can't be broken or very harsh penalties if you do decide to be an asshat and gank left and right. You can't do that in real life without consequences and I feel a mmo world should reflect real life in some aspects.
Eve does that good. They put out rewards for hunting down pirates and if you lose your shit, you lose almost everything, unless you're insured that is, but after a long gank session you're suddenly set upon by a few players working together, all your work is for naught and good riddance tbh. Too bad the rest of Eve sucks though...

Yeah Asheron's Call had literally no safe area. You could get killed the moment you logged in.
And while I'm sure this concocts images of level 100's camping newbie spawns 24/7, that really wasn't the case at all. Oh every once in awhile someone would swing through when they were bored, but most of the time it was seen as too dull to mess around there. The fighting that went on in the starter towns was usually by level 1 alternate characters just made for messing around.

Well in a game with a diversity-based skill progression, no drastic item difference, real time combat with no fireballs following you around the corner cause you're the "target" or a number showing your opponents' POWAH LEVEL and full loot the scenario of the one with the pimped out char one-shotting the new char won't be that frequent. Strength will come mainly in numbers and even that's relative since friendly fire can really mess up a group if they're piled up on one target, and when you manage to kill someone he will in most cases be sent to his bindstone far far away.
Not that you will never get gang banged, tea bagged, dry looted and sent on the other end of the map but this is not WoW, battles are not determined solely by dice rolls and who grinded most rats.

loot will be a factor, read #3 in the Curse Interview:
"3. Recent games have utilized a predictable itemization system, with ultra-frequent, nearly meaingless upgrades. Are Darkfall's items going to be more substantial, less frequent, and more memorable? Will players ever feel an attachment to their items?
In Darkfall crafting is very important, challenging and rewarding. Every item in Darkfall can be created by the players themselves. There are several powerful and rare items, such as the Sithras which are a cross between a whip and a light saber. There are also the racial special weapons which are powerful and unique to each race. Darkfall is of course full loot. If you're running around and flaunting a powerful item, armor etc. you might as well paint a bull's-eye on your forehead. Everyone is going to want it. You can't get too attached to your items in Darkfall unless you want it to sting when you lose them. Aside from full loot, there is also item decay to keep in mind, another way that items get recycled. You need to make careful use of your items if you want to keep them safe."
The game offers freedom of choice. If a bunch of players are jerks and love to gank then gather friends and allies and make them sorry for doing so. There is a neutrality system and even a neutral Island w/ a town to go to if you lose your standing with all towns.
Yes I will play any MMORPG that gives me freedom. People have forgotten how nice that is. They are like mindless quest grinding zombies. Worse than zombies because they aren't near as cool and don't eat brains.
There will be some ganking at a minimum, even in the starter areas. Some people will quit almost for sure.
I won't, I've played FPS for quite a while so dying doesn't mean something tragic to me.
I don't think it'll be as bad as people think. The enemy races will be kept out by the guards, the kos same race gankers will be kept away by the guards and there will be some people willing to help against gankers.
Some will die, some will quit. It's too big a jump for someone that works 100s of hours to get the super mega swords to come down to one where equipment means little.

True thier will be some ganking, but most likely it will be minimal. People with negative alignment are penelty free kill for anyone of thier race that sees them. So reds hanging around popular spots/starter towns will be killed fast.
I dont think ganking will be much of a problem myself. People do need to remember that DF is a PVP FPS though. I'm sure everybody will kill and get killed plenty of times. If you get out numbered..just get a group together and go back and kick thier butts .
1) You want full loot .So once you level up ganking newbie areas wont yield any better gear nor money .So people will move on to better harvesting grounds and so on
2) People just want to stalk and grief you endlessly. This would be a pain but I guess somekind of monitoring would help here
Now this griefer who is well above levels will satrt getting negaive ponter which will make him a target attackable by all npcs on site and he will be a walking target everywhere
while ganking is DEFINETELY happening... it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I also find alot of people who genuinely want to help ad team up. At first I was paranoid but so far not of these team ups lead to ganks... so there is hope in the DF community afterall.

I accidently voted yes, when I meant to vote no, so now I guess I have to.
Of course I awnsered yes. The size of the world will hold MANY safe spots for those who dont fancy getting "ganked".
But the alignment system/clans/antis/RISK will balance out the ganking.
Asdar
True thier will be some ganking, but most likely it will be minimal. People with negative alignment are penelty free kill for anyone of thier race that sees them. So reds hanging around popular spots/starter towns will be killed fast.
I dont think ganking will be much of a problem myself. People do need to remember that DF is a PVP FPS though. I'm sure everybody will kill and get killed plenty of times. If you get out numbered..just get a group together and go back and kick thier butts .
I gues there would be 2 scenarios in gankfest
1) You want full loot .So once you level up ganking newbie areas wont yield any better gear nor money .So people will move on to better harvesting grounds and so on
2) People just want to stalk and grief you endlessly. This would be a pain but I guess somekind of monitoring would help here
Now this griefer who is well above levels will satrt getting negaive ponter which will make him a target attackable by all npcs on site and he will be a walking target everywhere
yes
while ganking is DEFINETELY happening... it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I also find alot of people who genuinely want to help ad team up. At first I was paranoid but so far not of these team ups lead to ganks... so there is hope in the DF community afterall.
