dude, there must be seriously something wrong with you. i have 256 mb ram a radeon 7000 which is the minimum reqs and i havent crashed ONCE! i never lag i never need to relog, i havent found any bugs and the community is great towards u. this game proly has the best graphics i could ever run with my system, it gets boring for u and other ppl like u who like the ongoing shooting with no tactics whatsoever i mean go to ut2004. im happy this game isnt filled with idiots adn is mainly got clever people cause this game is about strategy and THINKING before shooting. you dont have to spend endless hours mining and stuff, theres way better things to do that earn u loads of money. the dev team update and patch this game every month to 2 weeks, and shiva is coming soon, this game is UNDERRATED!
I played this game for the month trial period. I bought the game for $10 at an EB store, so I figured I had nothing to lose. I only lasted a month, but that's mainly because a guy I work with persuaded me to try the XBox Live thing, and the new Rainbow Six 3 game is taking up my time right now.
Anyways, this game is unlike any other MMO I have ever played. Many people have said that there's nothing to do except be a PvPer or evil player on this game. Well, look at the box. You can see from every little slogan that the game is designed for the pursuit or wealth and power. It's a capitalist dream game. If you want something cute and cuddly, don't buy. This isn't Star Trek where hmans have every need supplied to them and money doesn't exist. This is unregulated corporate America on a galactic scale. The realism's nice too. The game clock is real time. I think it's set to GMT but without daylight savings so it's a little off. As there is no day and night cycles in space, the makers were free to do it that way. It makes it seem all the more real. Skills are time based learning, and at higher levels can take almost 2 weeks. But they also train during offline time too, keeping the game world persistent if you are there or not.
The world is well designed. The biggest I've ever seen. One big server, with a huge European and multinational player base. If you want to stay safe and amongst a community, remain in the highly secure core systems at the middle. I never played enough to get in depth in this game, but I saw the potential. I came to the conclusion that if you want variation in this game (because solo, it's boring...god it's boring), find friends and join a corporation that will help you out. Just by chatting on the channels I learned that there can be so much to do and a lot of fun to be had if you became an active part of the community. I never lasted long enough to find out though. When I think about it, I think about the time I spent there, which was solo and bored, mining and autopiloting across system after system. That basically stuck with me enough not to go back any time soon, but I do understand why people who like the game love it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Eve is the best mmog out on the market today, period.
The sheer amount of things to do, see and blow up is mind-boggling and the player comunity is one of the most dedicated and active to ever play an online game.
I can easily see myself playing eve 5 years down the line.

I played eve from BETA, but I played Shadowbane, EQ and DAOC aswell ... and they all have BUGS, so stop saying eve is full of bugs... course it is not....
Shadowbane is under rated, so is EQ.... Doac has the Rate is has, course it fits the game... the grafik in EVE has no need to change, it is the BEST out atm, even with a year on its ass...
I can only say EVE ROCKS !!! and yes im bored some times, but if your bored, set a huge skill in progress and go play an other game in the meantime. Thats what I do to get past the bored step in eve...
I have played two mmorpgs, Anarchy online and Eve-online.
When talking about bugs in EVE, let´s say there is as many as it was in AO in it´s early days... Yes it´s very annoying with ctd and downtimes and bugs overall, but EVE rocks anyway!
I can understand people who think bad of it. I got confused from the start and had to remake my character twice... But when u get a grip of how things work and what possibilites that is in game - it´s very hard to think bad of it even considering downtime etc.
I have now played the game since July 2003 and still find out new things to lear, new tactics to use etc. I won´t change to another mmorpg for a long while, that´s for sure!
very true, it is not for everyone. I found it exciting from the get go, but I dont think all would. Its too bad that the new players who like action couldnt immediately hook up with a PVP Corp and see the real action on Day 1, but its hard for a good PVP corp to take a day 1 player into harms way, it would be very distracting to have to explain the GUI while in combat.
Anyhow, as I always say Those Who Like It, Like It Alot.
You've obviously shown you've only went through the trial in a superficial way, and have'nt gotten into the gameplay in any way. And on top of that you seem to have been playing the trial while CCP were upgrading servers, which only shows your lack of credibility, as warnings and info were plastered over the main site and in in-game reads.
EVE has the same content as any other MMO out there, and imo does a better and more interesting way of managing it as any other game. Where it wins, is that it does'nt do hack and slash style of combat, but leaves you in the captains seat of the ship you've fitted, and forces you to make the tactical decisions. Besides, CCP have put a great deal of work into not making it only the best setup of fitting that wins, but ut also takes some understanding of game mechanics, to actually be successful at combat. The description you put in goes to show that you never went past n00b level, never looked into the use of various modules and how they can best be utilized. So yea, go play EverQuest or DAoC and kill that Skaven for teh millionth time only to do a freaking level up.
Eve has a good support staff, but due to the amount of bugs many valid petitions are closed with the message "the logs do not show that" or they are simply ignored. The support staff can be good, but it will mean nothing if the bugs is causing the amount of work to rise too high.
Last time I was stuck, i have been stuck once in the past 4 months, It took ten minutes to respond to my pentition.
A stuck bug is easily fixed, but it still takes time to fix and due to many such easily fixed bugs, then the more complicated bugs are ignored. Stuck bugs might not be common, but bugs with agents missions that needs a reset or insurance claims from ships that needs to be repackaged, because rats and asteroid fields become invisible are common and just as time consuming.

The only way to fight is to make sure the teams are uneven. Eve needs items, structures and skills that makes defensive stands possible, which could be achieved with "Area of Effect"-addons.
I dought you have done any PvP at all in eve. EvE is based in space, you cant compair the play stile to counter-strike. Your defence is how you set up your ship and how your budies set up there ships and what ships your side uses. Ive seen battles take place where a group with less numbers has and won.
Its actually quite easy to compare CS and Eve in the current state. Excahnge the toons in CS with ships and you pretty much have it. Bulletproof vests would be armor in Eve and HP would be structure in Eve. Guns would well be Guns in Eve.
What Eve is missing is something to add objects on the falt map, like a ship that can repair other ships (something like a medic in FPS games), ships that can make it harder to target or shoot ships in its surrounding area (much like a player that turns off the light in a room in FPS games), but also ships that improves the targetting and shooting (much like a player with a big flashlight ).
The only group defensive capability I have seen so far in Eve is when ships hide behind another ship in order to fool the missile hit routine.
Lol, you must be slow. These things are allready in game, and new stuff is constanly being added. Seems you've done a carebear career judging from your skills, and yea, that sometimes tends to get boring in the long run. Same as it does in any other game.
Btw. Seems you've played right after the last major Castor patch as well, and yea it had quite a few graphical bugs, and servers had a few run-downs. Judging the game from those days, is not doing it any justice, as, which you've shown, tend to get a lot of your critic based on angry forum posts.
Personally I find Eve just fine, then again I like games with real depth. Eve isnt for people who like powerleveling or shooting games - its too slow paced for that. So those kinda people should goto those kinda games and my kinda people should goto my kinda games, Simple as that.
Originally posted by Zuko planning and tactic?? How do you plan on something that are unknown to you? How do you make a tactic without knowning the circumstances you will be operating in? Its not possible.
Adding the option to change setup when engaged in battle actually adds more planning and tactics.
And of course if should not be a free change. A few seconds per item exchange and maybe limited to only one item exchange happening at any time.
Tactics: 1 a: the science and art of disposing and maneuvering forces in combat b: the art or skill of employing available means to accomplish an end
Tactics is not being able to switch to the perfect set-up for every situation and "planning" is not carrying every piece of equipment ever invented in a bottomless backpack so said "tactics" can be employed.
Quite the opposite. Tactics is about having to make decisions - Not having to hit "4" to select the rocket launcher.
The problem you have with Eve is that you dont understand what kind of game this is. You say that if you kill 2 ships you could be defending a corp and that there is no way of knowing this. YOU know it, and so does the people you fought off. That is the key to Eve. Eve is all about how you act in the game. You want to be succesful in Eve? Do something that makes you succesful. There are no levels or goals that show you how you are doing, you increased skill shows you you are doing well. You want to be the best fighter in the game? BECOME the best fighter in the game. you wont get told 'you are now the 3rd best cruiser pilot' you have to ACT like the best. If you and a couple of friends became succesful at building do you know how people would know that? People would start BUYING YOUR STUFF regurlary, you might be able to set up high profile deals with rich customers, thats success in Eve. You want a hard core combat team? You need to form one and you need to become tough or you will be beaten and your desire to be good wont match ur actual ability. Thats Eve.
You say combat is pathetic, you cant plan. Think of real life. When do you know exactly what danger is coming and what nest to do to counter it. you dont. You need to use what you have to the best of your ability AND HOPE your enemy isnt better, or has a better setup. Success in Eve is when e.g. you can sell goods to your friends lower than anyone else can and you can still make a profit. You dont get uber spell no.9 that is obviously much better than uber spell no.8. You get urself, ur knowledge of Eve, and your skills at various things, and its up to you to make them work to your advantage. Eve is a tough tough game, but I stuck at it because I wanted to be the best damn fighter pilot in Eve. After 6 months im now defending a 0.0 alliance daily in constant combat, honing my skills at the game as well as increasing the ability of my character. I might not be the best, but im sticking at it and im doing what i wanted to do. Test myself i combat daily, but i do it for a reason now, defending my friends and allies.
If you want a game where you can tell people that they cant possibly match you go and play something else, if you want to play a game where YOU can become part of something play Eve.
I have been playing Eve for about 8 months now and I just got my second account. It is a very good game and very detailed. If you are looking to get into a game that is fun and full of things to do then this is one for you.
Zuko lost any credibility with me, when Z mentioned "I can program a simple macro-runner to play Eve in all situations, including ninja-mining in 0.0.".
This is called "cheating" by most. Sorry dude, but if you're trying to cheat a game, don't be surprised if it has bugs, or crashes a lot. I played EvE for the 14-day trial, and had absolutely no crashes during the whole time. Didn't subscribe, mainly due to lack of money, and having friends playing a different game, but EvE looked good from what I saw. Friendly community, once I left the "newbie corp" everyone of a particular race starts in. Even that corp wasn't too bad.
DAoC's crafting system is pure evil (approx X00 crafting attempts to make something a level X character can use) in comparison to that of EvE (I don't know how it works, but I doubt it's nearly so tendonitis-inducing or as boring).
I don't have any big problems with bugs and the support is just great. Maybe mainstream games like WoW are "overrated", but EVE is really worth ever point. The standing system manages that you can interact with all factions and thats just great, because even big firms like Blizzard don't even try to make their reputation system work with the other faction, because they think its to complicated... well EVE shows that it is possible.
edit: Sorry for the bad english, but as and german I just can't do it better.
Alright, I'm going to jump in and support Zuko (sorta ).
Eve does seriously lack in real "game" content. It is, without doubt, massively multiplayer role playing. But Eve is not, in any pure sense, a "game." The features that would define a game simply do not apply to Eve. Eve has many of the characteristics that any other game has, but we aren't talking about any sort of normal "game" here.
Behind it all, Eve is little more than an in-development economy model simulation. Players join up, generate wealth, acquire property, and determine the value of given items/properties based on economic principles (like rarity, relative power/value, etc). It is mostly a player run economy, and CCP's job is to make it look pretty and to keep introducing new items to keep trade functioning. CCP wrote the basics of the economic system, but they didn't really code the "game." The player's create the game, for themselves and for others, inside the economic system.
So really, Zuko is essentially correct when he criticizes Eve for game content. He is also correct in pointing out that AT THE MOMENT Eve is severely limited in the available items and equipment inside the economic system. Because Eve is 100% dependent on players participating in the economy, and because there's a relatively small number of items within the economy, the game suffers. Players have to make up their own game but there's only so much they can do if the economy is limited.
But, as Zuko keeps saying, Eve is contantly evolving and new items are slowly being added. SO, in theory, the "game" aspect of Eve should pick up over time as players can significantly diversify their roles within the system. The end result should be a lot more "game" content in the Eve system. Instead of flaming Zuko and saying that you disagree with him utterly, you might notice that it's because people point out these very real problems with player satisfaction in Eve that Eve keeps getting better.
Eve is mostly player run, and CCP listens to its dissenting players quite well. It is because of people who do not simply says "Eve rocks! - you're a loser if you think it sucks and are clearly stupid" that the game improves, not because a bunch of morons who can't criticize anything they enjoy give the game a 10/10 rating on some website.
On the points about incentives to increase player participation, or even the make it a necessity, this is one of Eve's system aspects where you either like it or not. Since Eve has been designed to accomodate the occaisional player (you become an uber miner without ever mining a single piece of ore, for example) including incentives to increase player cooperation would create a lot of tension in-game between active and passive players. If a better miner is one who mines with others because of certain areo-of-effect bonuses from special equipment, the occaisional players and solo players (who are often the same) would suffer horribly. Same in battle siuations. As it stands now, I think it is the more active players who suffer from this -- all you really get for playing a lot more often is a lot more participation in the economy (and maybe the evolving story-line).
I'm not sure that there is anyway to address this kind of issue in Eve without totally changing the game from a skill based out-of-game system to an experiential in-game system. Maybe there needs to be "Eve" and "Alterna-Eve"
I think Eve is overrated too. Not all that significantly, but I'm actually surprised it's rating is as high as it is. I would think a 7.0-7.5 would be more accurate of Eve's real value, especially given how much more development is being done on the system and the "game." You all might also notice that Eve's rating has gone up from 7.0 since the end of EnB...
Anyway, my ISK on the sitch. Sorry for the length of the rant.

His point was not that he was trying to cheat, but that the entire game could be run on autopilot since it requires very very little player interaction. Ships pilot themselves, all warping is auto piloted, combat is autopiloted, firing your weapons is scripted action, mining is point and click, etc... The only real decision making process is "should i stay or should i go?" Of course, that is only the very basics of playing and ignores roleplaying entirely. But then, most people don't roleplay anyway.

Hi, I'm new here to the forums and all, but I've been playing EVE for about a month and some other MMO's much longer than that.
So far in every way EVE beats the crap out of its competition. The catch is, you have to be able to appriciate the game to see that. Any of the problems or negatives you can throw at EVE are applicable to any MMO, and most of the time its worse in those other games.
Heres what I really like about EVE. 1) Solo play: You are not REQUIRED at any point to team with other people to advance your character or get some new skill. I didnt used to have a problem with this, but after SWG i could never get the hang of forced team grouping to level again. 2) PvP: I hate PvP...a lot. But this is mainly because of the way its implemented in most games. EVE has an awsome system, PvP can occur anywhere at any time. I mean, just look at the people who have huge bounties on their heads, that's not for nothing, and its not just for harassing the player base. 3) Skills: This is two-fold. Its time based, which elminates grinding, but like SWG your character is flexable. Ships, stats, everything can be altered to fit what you want to do on a whim. Granted, it may take time, but same with SWG.
As for that bit about macroing the whole game, well again lets look at SWG. You see players marcro through every proffession in the game and merchants macroing to announce where their goods are. Its no different here than anywhere else.
I think way too many people who pass this game off as boring or stupid just want instant gratification. I dont think thats a bad thing, but when you shoot your mouth off at people who have never tried it or dont actually try to discuss what you dont like (happier instead to complain) then you cause a problem.
Hmmm...somewhere in there i went off on a rant/tangent. Meh.

I think EVE is worth the high rating...

Meh.
