ummax...the WoW "loot" cards actually have a function in the TCG. Also you can "loot" the cards within the game.
I'm still hung up on the fact that the SWG card game doesn't have actual cards.
It however does not bother you to have a character in a game with all the items you collected over possibly years and then have the game shut down like any number of games have. Then you have nothing.
SWG didn't even have to shutdown in order to have the items I collected/had turned into nothing...twice.

My character and ingame items were paid for by my monthly subscription fee. Nice try but you fail again.

Just stopping by the good ol' SWG forums as I do every now and then. I giggled at this entire thread and actually took the time to read most of the posts.
I'm only quoting this one because it pretty easily sums up the theme of misinformation going around in the thread. I don't know who told you this, but you cannot 'loot' the tcg loot cards from WoW in game. Doesn't work that way.
As far as whether or not this is gambling? Ummm, short answer: no.
Long answer: If you think this kind of scheme is gambling then you're a complete moron. The kinds of arguements I've seen in this thread supporting the fact that it is are completely ridiculous. I ask that everyone that supports this insane idea stop, taking five freaking seconds and actually -think- about what they're saying.
By the many definitions of gambling you folks seem to state then practically everything in life is gambling. Let me explain:
Coca-Cola holds a sweepstakes where you can get a prize just by buying a coke and looking under the cap. By defintions and idealogies in this thread then this is gambling. You buy a coke and you're also buying the CHANCE to win something.
You light a cigarette and you're gambling. You bought a really unhealthy habit, but you also bought the CHANCE to get cancer.
Candy companies do the prize thing too. So do cereal companies, so do phone companies (text blahblah to blahnumber for your chance to win! you pay for a text message and a -CHANCE- to win something else).
And before anyone says anything:
1. I'm not currently playing SWG or any SOE game as it's a terrible company and an even worse game.
2. I HATE SOE for ruining SWG.
3. I'm only chiming in for the sake of sanity and to put out some of these nerdrage fires. If you hate SOE so much that you lose all sense of logic then stop playing their games, end of story.
P.S.: If there is ANY fine print ANYWHERE before you buy one of these digital packs that has a few key phrases in it then there is NOTHING anyone can do about this.

This isn't a really good analogy unless you had to pay extra for the code under the cap. The price of the coke itself is like the price of the swg subscription. The card game loot decks are an extra charge. More of a lottery ticket than a sweepstakes.
Personally, I don't believe that the card game is illegal as others do. It's still a sleazy way to squeeze money out of their remaining players.

And you can also enter for free without purchasing said Coke. It is part of the law that governs sweepstakes.

There is also no law that says that Coke has to come give you free Coke.
Yeah, teh promo packs aren't "free" (they're included in the subscription cost), but I think legally it gets them around the "no purchase necessary" if gambling shit gets brought around.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

As far as whether or not this is gambling? Ummm, short answer: no. Actually it depends where you live. Much like the station station exchange in eq2 violates gambling laws in certain areas.

Very well researched arguments. Great post.
