The problem with this preorder thing is that no matter how the "trial" turns out, or if theres even complete silence from the 22nd to the preorder date, there are people who will pay for a preorder.
Oh and another aspect of this that i see as a problem: there would be no preorders, period. Now there WILL be preorders. Kinda creepy to me...
People who are going to Pre-Order deserve to be scammed! I will not feel any pitty with them, when the truth comes out at the end of February and they come here crying!
There are plenty of signals all over the place, indicating to be very very cautious right now about what's going on here and if you wave it away and ignore it. Well so be it. Good luck!
In all fairness though, this "free trial" will only be available to a limited number of people (because Aventurine does not have the infrastructure to satisfy the current demand). Under the given circumstaces, this makes it more like an invited beta test.
And why is this so?
Because intrest in DFO is to large.. why is it to large? becasue of all the trolls..

Man forget viral marketing, more up and coming MMO's should hire trolls to get them customers.
Priceless, and to think all this time it was the fans keeping Darkfall down!!!

After one month of "open" beta, they will have pre order as a answer to the delayed release. And i urges noone to get the pre order, i would never pre order any MMO.

No no no.. stop saying this, it is WRONG! Trial will start on Jan 22nd, Pre-orders will start MID FEB
So preorders have nothing to do with who gets to play in the Trial..crist..
Ok lets read the whole post shall we now not just the parts we like?
Thousands (unknown number) will be able to do a free trial of the game on the 22nd. Why is the launch of the game being pushed back to feb 25th? because Aventurine states they have fallen behind in beta testing and need more player data, as well as needing to stress test the servers. So Yay! some thounsands (2k or more?) will in essense be allowed into the game to BETA TEST it for free. Some how beta test and trial to me do not sound like the same thing, but we do know the reason the game is not launching from Aventurine itself ie. to beta test it more. Nowhere does it say the NDA will be dropped anytime soon.
Now come mid feb per your information the per-orders will become available. Aventurine states those that have pre-order will have precedance in being picked for the free the trial.(slowly pushing out those that have not preordered?) They further state that its possible not all preorders will get into the trial, thus in effect if the preorders can't get in those that don't pre-order will deffinently not get in the free trial. Sorry but this tells me that if Aveturine is already saying they won't have room for paying customers your only chance to get into / be in the trial post mid feeb is to pre-order.
its possible that you will argue that Aventurine will keep paying customers out to let freebies stay in but somehow since another concern of Aventurines is now finances i don't see that as happening do you?

I see you are in need of a small education on what an "Open Beta" is..
here:
Definition:
A beta test is a limited release of a product with a goal of finding bugs before the final release. Software testing is often referred to by the terms "alpha" and "beta."
Generally speaking, the alpha test is an internal test to find bugs, and the beta test is an external test. During the alpha phase, the product is opened up to employees of the company and, sometimes, friends and family. During the beta phase, the product is opened up to a limited number of customers.
Sometimes, beta tests are referred to as "open" or "closed". A closed beta test has a limited number of spots open for testing, while an open beta has either an unlimited number of spots (i.e. anyone who wants to can participate) or a very large number of spots in cases where opening it up to everyone is impractical.
The problem with this preorder thing is that no matter how the "trial" turns out, or if theres even complete silence from the 22nd to the preorder date, there are people who will pay for a preorder. Never said it could be a scam, i really dont think it is... but how theres suddenly a preorder could mean they're running low on money. And if thats the case, how would this be any different from any other MMO that gets kicked out the door to fly or fall flat?
I just dont buy that "The pre-orders are necessary so that we can have some measure of the demand." Didnt Tasos boast about the number of interested gamers earlier..? And now hes suddenly surprised?
Personally i think they got low on money and cant put up enough servers. Oh, and for the fans sake i really hope it is indeed feature complete. Good luck guys, whoever gets in!

Im confused are you being sarcastic or what, cause you just proved his point.
Open = devs dont pick who gets in. Most games either do the unlimited or do a large amount of beta keys to well known sites(fileplanet for instance), contests and pre-orders. Anyone who followed the game usualy gets into these, even have forum partys counting down the seconds.
Its main purpose is to wrap up stress testing (You shoulda already began testing toward the end of closed) and build up hype before release. Movies have special previews or showings, mmogs have open beta. Other than a few tweaks or minor patching this is what you get on opening day.
Closed Beta = Devs select who gets in. And its under NDA
The big difference between open and closed beta is actualy the NDA. While some companies will call for a open beta and keep the NDA on its usualy cause there hiding something. Open beta is designed to give the public a preview of there game. Beta is kept in there just as a marketing trick, "This is just beta it will be more stable and bug free on release" It never is though.
Tasos is not asking for money, that is a lie and you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting it.
You will be giving it to him in exchange for a preorder of Darkfall beta and the possibility of getting early access to that beta, before that beta is launched on the 25th of Feb., totally different thing.
Tasos hopes you will all get a chance to try the game before you pay, but he also hopes you will all preorder it to potentiality get the chance to try the game, before getting a chance to try the game.
Hope this clears up everything.
I'm seeing a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation spread by the haters and trolls and Tasos will be unhappy if I don't clarify things for you all on his behalf.

You are wrong Pol. You preorder to get early access to the game, not to get access to trial. That was Funcom and Mythic remember ? You pay early to get in early, a strange concept, he ?
--- And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there. John Smedley, SOE
When Tasos said that he probably didn't expect them to take pre-orders. And therefore no lie.
My view. A litle more sophisticated and positive view
______________________________ The Sceptics, yes they're special but we've need them to.. I guess. And if they're put more effort MMORPG.com can create a 'Team Sceptic' and send them to the Special Olympus.

I agree in the sense buyer beware. Its their money to do what they will with, just don't come back QQ'ing if they take a chance and things turn out bad.
And thats the problem here. We blame the buyer for getting screwed over when they pre-order a game thats a scam. Instead we should be demanding developers give 3 day free trials and money back.
Its time developers are held to the same standard as any other industry. Im allowed to test drive a car, change the channels on a tv in a store, sit in a chair at a furniture store, touch and see a rug before buying it, etc. Yet its somehow acceptable to keep an MMO in the dark for us to buy. We are forced to buy based on nothing more than Hype and promises.
The response is just wait then till a few months after launch but thats not good enough either. There are still fanbois out there defending games like Dark and Light for goodness sake (nobody in their right mind would say D&L was a good game). Their agenda is to viral market a bad game so it survives and gives them a few people to play with.
As it stands now I cant return an MMO I buy. Even if the box says DX10 on it but its missing that feature. Even if the game is 90% unfinished like D&L was, Im stuck with it.

I see no problem here, just stay away from the game. If you don't get to try it out. Wait for the NDA to drop and you will be fine. The game being a "sandbox skillbased with a cap" game, the loss of a few weeks will not limit you much in the game.

When Tasos said that he probably didn't expect them to take pre-orders. And therefore no lie. My view. A litle more sophisticated and positive view
Exactly, if people were more intelligent like you and me they might be capable of comprehending everything Tasos is doing is totally legitimate and justified and is only being done for the benefit of the preorders.
You twisted my words. All I said was 1) Pre-order money doesn't go to the company, especially if you buy from retailer. 2) Using pre-orders to get access to open beta is nothing new WAR did it 3) Its only a scam when people start paying for a product that doesn't exist. There have been several legitimate showings of DF, namely the Convention the game was shown at, some youtube videos, and MMORPG Italia. I'm not a fanboy. I don't plan on playing this game at launch.
1) I may be wrong but if you do pre-order from a retailer, then yeah, the company does not get money untill you buy it from the retailer. But, you are not actually pre-ordering it, you are pre-ordering it from the retailer who orders it normally from the manufacturer. a "true" pre-order is when you do it directly from the manufacturer and they charge you.
As far as I know, retailers never pre-order. They just order regularely. So if you pre-order a regularely ordered item, you are simply buying a regular order, not a pre-order. Please correct me if Im wrong, I haven't preordered anything in a long time.
2) yeah may companies are doing it lately. Its a really bad business practice. Essencially, you pay to test the game. That worries me because the developer is tempted to save a buck or two and skip on professional QA by allowing amatures to test the game. Granted, some people do test the game, but most people do not. If the company relies on public testers to test their game - the game will not be released in proper form. The only time when the game should be tested by amatures is during server stress tests, when all that is needed is to test the numbers, and not the game.
3) Unfortunately this happened already. D&L charged people who canceled half a year ago, they double charged, they refused to refund, etc etc. Also, if you do pre-order and get charged and find out that the game is not what you expected, do you think they will refund it? I doubt it.
Pre-orders in MMO world make it so much easier for companies to sell us unfinished and generally bad games. Yes there was some exposiour in Italy, etc etc. But are you able to tell whether you like food by looking at someone eating it? I know I cant. I must taste it personally before I can say for sure that I like it enough to buy it.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

No you are wrong Xri. (because I say so on the internet,no other reason).
You preorder to get a chance at access to the open closed early limited pre full launch trial hardware stresstest internal beta release client candidate.
Whenever it starts, and Tasos might tell you when it does, and you only get in to the initial stage if you are Tasos's friend or a forum moderator, but your chances increase each subsequent stage depending on which clan you are in and how many members from it have already preorderd.

I understand. So you finally got tired of digging for conspiracy theories on the net and jump on the irony wagon instead. I guess that is fun...for a while.

In case you haven't noticed... things have changed the last six months. The world economy has practically collapsed, most people have lost 1/2 their lifes savings in their 401Ks, many companies stock has lost 1/2 it's value, the credit market has practically collapsed.
I would imagine borrowing money to put up thousands of servers for a game that may or may not be a hit is pretty difficult these days.
My guess is this is the best that Adventurine can manage given the current economic climate.
They've got to get some money coming in so they can get servers up and expand their player base.
If you read the official announcement, it's said that instead of the game launching, an open beta/trial of the game will be available on January 22nd.
Edit: Free
Ohhhh, so it's all great huh? And Tasos never lied ever you're gonna tell me?!??
Continue to back up your dream game that lives only the imagination of the fanboys.
It's a GREAT thing that they announce a release date only 5 weeks ago on December the 5th, but had no idea of all these problems and the number of beta testors etc huh? ANOTHER LIE FROM TASOS. BS RED FLAG! HELLO McFLY!!?? McFLY!??? And it's perfectly cool to come up to a mere seven days before your promised launch date and pull this shit huh?
Nope, your GOD Tasos has never deceived anyone, nor has he ever told any lies. He is perfect and so it this stupid joke of a freaking game.
Go pre-order your ridiculous scam game. Just don't cry to ANYONE when it's the biggest piece of shit you've ever played and makes AoC that all you DF fanboys have mocked the past six months look like a masterpeice mmo in comparison.
Lol wow.. relax guy.. why so much butthurt???
Biggest lie of all MMO's?? Far from it... but nice try.
Why do people think if Tasos says they will try to do something it is a PROMISE??
Its called Prospect of Running a Business. If it was "off-the-record" he should've said so, but a deep consensus of conduct when in interviews or documented in any fashion--- your word is gold. Its not just for Tasos, its for any developer. That's why Gaute was under fire... and that's why anyone is under fire if they contradict or lie.

Sure some will try and hold out a week or 2 hoping they will get in free, but after that they will start caving. If one was to assume Aventurine was shady and out to make money they could just only let pre-order people while saying they are letting others in free. (not like they have to show the books to MMORPG.COM or anything.)

I have nothing clever to say.
After one month of "open" beta, they will have pre order as a answer to the delayed release. And i urges noone to get the pre order, i would never pre order any MMO.
And if i hear bad things about DF during the open beta, i wont get it the 25th of Februari either.
So how could it be a scam if i wont give them any money? Worst scam in history.
Whens this "Open beta" your talking about planned to start? i have only heard of a limited beta that may well be under NDA (as they have yet to state they will drop it)

And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there.

When Tasos said that he probably didn't expect them to take pre-orders. And therefore no lie.
My view. A litle more sophisticated and positive view

The Sceptics, yes they're special but we've need them to.. I guess.
And if they're put more effort MMORPG.com can create a 'Team Sceptic'
and send them to the Special Olympus.

Exactly, if people were more intelligent like you and me they might be capable of comprehending everything Tasos is doing is totally legitimate and justified and is only being done for the benefit of the preorders.

Whenever it starts, and Tasos might tell you when it does, and you only get in to the initial stage if you are Tasos's friend or a forum moderator, but your chances increase each subsequent stage depending on which clan you are in and how many members from it have already preorderd.
lol...that's some funny yet truthful shit right there that polarization just stated...lol.
To the OP:
Mommy needs to ground you from the computer because you are getting WAY too emotional about a game you have invested ZERO dollars in.
You might try going outside and playing a sport or two.
