Are we giving up on Darkfall?

theJPKtheJPK Member Posts: 91

I noticed that Darkfall Online went from being rated the "Most Hyped Game in Development" to not even on the top 5. Is everyone seriously giving up on Darkfall because they pushed the date back another month, you had to have seen it coming. Darkfall looks like it has an amazing foundation to become a fantastic MMORPG, everything else can be tweaked along the way. We just have to cut the developers some slack, they aren't some big gaming company like Blizzard after all. They are just a small team that works out of Greece! They did make a mistake by hyping everyone up to only move the release date back, and they don't have the coolest website in the world, and the graphics engine may not blow some peoples minds(although I think it looks fine) but they were one of us, they grew up on MMORPGs.

So are we really going to give up on Darkfall...just because we can't start playing until Febuary?

Shrug, Hype is nothing. AOC showed us that.

Still, Am I giving up on Darfall? Nope. I say let the game come and then I will judge

I think most of the people that frequent this site think of Darkfall as a mmo joke now especially since they've been pushing their release date back for what 3 years now?  At least?

Other then the people who post on the Darkfall section I'd say most just don't want to care anymore.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

we can start playing on the 22nd says the staff so we can wait and see if people still attack it

This isnt about pushing back the release date (although that doesnt help).

Its about a company that said they would never do pre-orders.

Its about a company that has refused to allow a reputable game mag or website to review the game.

Its about trust and Tasos has earned none of it.

I'll be nice to Aventurine but unless they're honest about shooting too high, promising too much for what they're capable of, then they don't have my respect and I won't cut them any slack.

I'm not giving up on Darkfall because I'm very interested to see the whole debacle unfold.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

    1. Darkfall releases at some unspecified date in the future.
    2. Zillions of people buy boxes, make characters
    3. Much ganking ensues.  Cries of "This is a griefers game!  I QUIT!" ensue
    4. Bored WoW'ers go back to WoW
    5. Some time later, bored gankers quit and start hyping up the next open pvp game
    6. Servers merge
    7. Darkfall slowly evolves into a fiercely competitive pvp game
    8. Remaining subscribers form the core of a new playerbase that revolves less around ganking (though it will still happen to people who don't protect themselves, of course), and more around territory and resource control.
    9. Darkfall slowly grows
    10. Five years later, it has about 400-500K subs and is considered a classic
    11. Everyone who signed up in the first week and quit at stage 3 wonders what happened.

    There's your debacle for you.

I must say when reading the features I hope it doesnt fail. But one cant help to have doubt on the way they are handling the game..... If it does come out, I will be sure to read up on it to see what people are saying.

You all may or may not have had the chance to visit the "White Border" thread here in the Darkfall section and may have missed out on the, albeit sarcastic, humor of this whole situation. The entire purpose of the thread is not and has never been to ridicule anyone or Darkfall itself. The humor there is dedicated solely to the all of the clamor and upset that is happening as a result of a delay.

If you haven't learned by now that delays are a fact of life in the game industry in general (including console games and even the consoles themselves.. remember how long we awaited the PS3?) it's time you made the effort. Just take a deep breath and recall how many times we've heard something straight from the horses mouth and they had to retract it and tell us the product would be delayed. It happens constantly and not just from small time indie developers like Aventurine. Chalk it up to "shit happens".

The entire panic which seems to have been created by the announcement of a delay (yet again, I know!) seems to me to be a complete overreaction. Conspiracy theories and terms like "vaporware" tossed about with wild abandon and outright accusations of a scam are ludicrous at best. The fact is that not one of us can say with any certainty what-so-ever that they know what is going to happen or why it's happening without refering to the statements from Tasos himself since HE is the only one who has a clue. Whatever his reasons are, whether you choose to believe them or not, the truth of the matter is that it has been a masterstroke of advertising, intended or not. He's gotten more attention for his game for FREE than most companies, large or small, could have gotten for tens or hundreds of thousands in advertising dollars.

I am completely neutral on the subject of Darkfall. I have ZERO expectations. That is not to say that I do not have any hopes for the game, however. I game just like the rest of you here and am always on the lookout for something worthy to play, BUT, I refuse to allow myself to be swallowed whole into the gaping jaws of panic and outright foolishness over the worry of a game that I have no stake in. Since the only people who should be worried if the game is a scam at all are the people funding Aventurine and the fact that the rest of us have nothing invested PERIOD... what is the point of losing sleep, chewing my fingernails to the elbows or running about on forums screaming doom and gloom or bloodying the noses of trolls? Yes, I know it's the hobby of many of you and some simply cannot help themselves... but for the rest of you... chillax and have a little fun with it. The day will come or it won't. It will be a scam or it won't. It will be the greatest thing since sex or it won't! Until we see it happen.. we just won't know.

I've seen Darkfall get pushed back for a LOT of reasons, this one is the first that seems actually logical and needed. This isn't a "lol wait, the games not done yet, give us 6 more months!" its more of a "well, we were shooting for a small niche audience of about 50-70k subscribers, and now we got like, 350k wanting to play! The game's done and all, just give us a sec to remortgage our houses so we can buy a few hundred more servers!"

Bah, you can not give up on a game that has not even been released. I just think people are just more interested in other things until February 25th comes rolling around.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

Isn't there just going to be one server?  How does that work?  If the server merges into itself, won't that cause it to pop out of existance?  Or maybe in the case of Darkfall, pop INTO existance?

After reading about some leaks? absolutely not. either way, we will find out on the 22nd

Also, there are anti ganking features in place. Such as the supposed ability of a bunch of noobs able to own a higher skilled player

Following this game is like watching the video of the freight train rolling up on the truck stuck on the tracks: you know what is going to happen, but can't look away.

Maybe it will turn out to be good, but from reading the posts of the boosters, it will be everything to everyone. (In an eerie coincidence, just like a certain just elected US President-to-be).

With expectations as high as they are/were for Darkfall, I don't see how they could be met. Plus the whole lack of transparency from Tasos is troubling.

TBH I really do want to play this game but if I can't try it first as Tasos had mentioned Im sure as hell not pre-ordering the game I'll just wait till it releases  and see what the reviews are and the chaos to die down.

Not at all. Obama is not everything to everyone

There is no info because Tasos did not want hype, he still got some, hence the release delay

Nice to see someone sensible over the whole issue. This is precisely what I would recommend we all do.

You wouldn't know it by the press he gets or the promises he's made.

Like any company, it was pretty clear the in the MMORPG.com interview, Tasos wanted the free press and the "hype", but didn't want the scrutiny that came with it. Not wishing them ill, but that is how it seemed to me.

I like many, don't wish anything bad on DF, I hope it is a good game, there seem to be so few around, but neither am I going to buy for a month or two after it is released, there have been plenty of shennanigans with DF over the years, and they'll get no benefit of any doubt.

At this point, I'm just interested in seeing how all this plays out.

Even if I never play the game myself, whether it becomes a hit or falls apart in disaster will be fascinating to watch. There are three days now until the 22nd, so there's no sense in giving up on anything until we know where things will go from here.

Darkfall gave up on itself a long long time ago. Only the foolish still hang about.
