This game is the WoW-Killer!

Haha! Now read why. WoW-Killer by definition does not mean a game that will put WoW out of business.

Its impossible, games like Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, EQ2, DAOC, Diablo/2, Starcraft (the list goes on) of timeless online gaming classics. Servers will always be hosted and a game like WoW that has exceeded all of its predecessors will never be "slain"

So right, to what a WoW-killer IS. A wow-killer is a game that is as good, if not better than WoW. Currently WoW is the most popular MMO on the market, this isn't because WoW is so extraordinary, but  it is fun and playable.

Fun and playable are crucial elements of any game, but WoW certainly is lacking in numerous areas, with vast room for improvement.

The grandeur of being a "WoW-Killer" has nothing to do with my desire to watch another game die, however, it is out of my excitement for what the next generation of MMOs offer that I would promote a game as the WoW-KILLER.

And The Chronicles of Spellborn is it. Everything about this game is vastly superior to competing MMOs. Graphics, Music, Questing, Combat both PvE and PvP.  So many MMOs struggle with balancing economies and character stats, item stats etc.. Spellborn drops the archaic d20 models for fresh new approaches to fantasy lore and game mechanics.

So flame all you want, this post is bait, but the game will be released soon so keep yours eyes open!

Well maybe because their release was a little disaster. I still don't get what countries have access to the game already. I'm from Slovakia which is part of EU right next to Austria, and when I try to make an account on their website it redirects me to their american website with banner ads to sign up  for their closed beta.

    REALITY CHECK

  • xenageoxenageo Member Posts: 31

It is true that the european forums are complaining that the servers are empty.

But this isn't a reflection of the game, it is a reflection of an unmarketed game launched on 6 servers across 7 countries.  It is well known TCOS is launching in different regions at different dates.

When TCOS launches in the USA as well as the rest of Acclaim's global territories, I have no fear of underpopulation.

As for game content, I do know they held a majority of endgame content back from the eu closed beta. I also know they are adding and creating new content as we speak.

I am a huge fanboy so by all means bring the flames, but the game itself is GOLD and I urge you to play the free trial when it comes out!

I came here to laugh at yet another WoW-killer thread. I know, I'm being useless, but so is this thread.

  • xenageoxenageo Member Posts: 31

no, its okay, i named the thread this just to get attention, so by all means 8)

also, this thread serves the purpose of informing the public of an incoming sleeper-hit! if you don't know, now you know!

Is it only for the germans and french atm?

Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Norway, Sweden, Danmark and Finland.

We got 6 servers. 2 Internatial ones, 2 German ones, 2 French ones.

And guess what? They are all dead!

You got 11 countries, from wich Germany, Norway, Sweden and Danmark are pretty big gaming countries, especially when it comes to MMO's.... and they can't even get enough people interested in trying the game for FREE!

Ofcourse they haven't bothered to market the game, aside from Holland itself (reason why ( if you are able to find someone ) most are dutch on the International servers).

The game is pretty okay. But the complete lack of a Bank, Marketplace, LFG tools and PVP system isn't really helping either.

Especially Bank, Marketplace and LFG tools are pretty basic MMO stuff that should have been in the game from start! So that really baffled me!

Not to mention that a horrible amount of quests (most even very important questchains that can just fully stop your progression) are completely bugged!

Add to that, that we had the last patch before christmas. People are suffering from these bugged quests for a month now.

And it's all wait and see if the patch next week is going to fix most of them.

So conclusion: I don't know what the OP has been smoking lately, but this topic is EPIC fail.

    Cheers

For a sucsessful mmo two things are key. First the visuals, second the controls. These are the two things that lead players in any game or make them leave their old games to try something new. After browsing around on youtube for tCoS these two things came in my mind first. First of all there were a lot of areas with no clutter just bare grounds with some green or brown texture that makes the people think they are walking on grass or rock. Second was manual aim and that retarded dice like thing that holds the skills. Ofc its easyer to manage than it looks, but as of looks it makes you think that this game is rather an mmo fps with a low infusion of mortal combat than a simple rpg.

Everything comes after. The amount of grind, the skills, the features, the lore, all details till somebody doesnt chooses to give the game a shot. I could roll Dark Fall here because the features promise something awesome however the graphic makes you think it over and over again if you really would like to risk crying yourself to sleep on the end of the day you installed it. As of tCoS i hardly doubt that it will make anybody leave wow. Today's mmos hit several barriers. If you want a WoW killer then it would have to start off like darkfall. Currently the only thing i can imagine for a game that is supposed to kill wow would be indeed based on total freedom. DarkFall has failed allready. The retarded GM team and the graphic that is poor for even a joke will kill it before anybody gives it a real chance to become something worthy of being called an mmo.

When i imagine a real mmo it would be something where you can build freely. Cityes, walls, towers... shape the world as you like with your two hands. The thrill of PvP, PvE, grinding for equips is lost long ago. You can pvp and pve EVERYWHERE, its boring allday by now. The question is how can you enchance the options to it. Wall climbing, constructing, creating, stealthing. I miss those options. Alas i hate wow for calling itself 3D while you cant even climb a fucking mountain, not to mention a tree or a building. No tactical options at all.

I think TCoS is a nice game, but I cant really compare it to WoW. I also dont know what TCoS has to do with WoW or any other MMO. Maybe you should try taking WoW's succes not so personal lol.

To me TCoS is made by some talented MMO devs who made a stupid distribution mistake.

I can either read/speak Greek or English. If the game doesn't/can't offer either, it's pointless to check the game. And I'm one of the weird guys that go and buy the box and try all MMOs that come out.

In my opinion the game looks good.

About their European launch. This game will die in europe because their mistakes in the european launch. You  can't hope a mmorpg to be succesfull launching it in 6 or 7 countries, there is no player base to fill the servers, even 1 will be too much in my opinion.

About USA launch, Im sure the game will do really good in USA. There is a big player base waiting to play.

What do you base this on?

Why would there not be a good player base in Europe for a starting game? WoW for example manages just fine with more than 2 million active subscriptions here.

I have made a hobby out of trying to convert people to new and interesting MMOG's that may not be mainstream. There are usually a few barriers that prevent people from being converted.

    1. They expect the controls to work just like the previous game they played. In this case, the standard is WoW, which was just a refined version of EQ. It has been copied in Vanguard, LotRO, WAR, and to some extent even AoC. Many people, even very inteligent people, will quit within minutes because they can't adapt. Others have no problem and even enjoy learning new control systems.

    2. They hate to get confused or feel dumb about game mechanics. Personally, I see it as a rewarding challenge to learn new game systems. Most don't handle it well. Maybe they want to feel in control. Maybe they want to feel like "the man". Maybe they just don't want to think much when they are trying to relax and play a game. I don't know or understand it, but I see it all the time.

    3. Many people are affraid to try anything that isn't popular. Nevermind that popular isn't necessarily an indication of it being any good. It also eliminates the possiblility of someone have particular tastes in a MMOG. Its the Toyota Camry/Micheal Bolton/American Idol syndrome (no offense to those who actually like those pop icons). Some people can't make their own decisions so they let the majority do it for them.

TCoS has all of those factors working against it.

Well, if they ever decide to let me play, I'll give it a try.

But they'd better hurry, there's other games on the horizon and one of them might grab my interest first.

Exactly, this will be their downfall before they even get off the ground.

    Agree

    this thread is ridiculous.

The only thing that TCoS kills is the faith that gaming company management team actually have a common sense.

We will see though how the NA release takes off, but for EU servers it is game over, unless they merge those with Acclaim ones.

I wouldn't say this game is a WoW killer.

    I wouldn't want a WoW killer.

This game attempts break the mold... to move beyond they way we've normally played MMOs.

I've said it a hundred times before and I guess I'll have to say it again.  There is only one 'WoW-Killer' and that is Blizzard.

I second that. The wow-killer will be blizz. Tired of people trying to compare all mmos with wow. In this case you would be trying to compare apples with oranges.

I concur...it's hard to vote on or classify a game as a "WoW killer"..when I can't even play it and have no idea when that day will come. I don't care what has been said..as to actual dates...I'll believe it when I can play it.

  • bluefootedbluefooted Member Posts: 48

you can try it out if you spend a little bit of time and get around the login by using a proxy. I played the level 7 with each character on the other servers.

This game to me is a wow-killer, because after playing only to level 7, my desire to play wow completely went away. I uninstalled it and closed my account. The fact that the mobs will dodge attacks, and that just standing there you get your ass handed to you makes this game require skill.

That being said, this wont take a large share from wow, because it requires skill and as you can see through the history of wow, content is getting easier becuase people dont want a challange.

as for those that say that europe is done, Eve online took a long time to get a solid player base, and AO had difficulty at the begining. The game is solid, and from the first too zones looks very promising. I am not entirely sure on upper end content.

But again, i played the demo and lost all desire to play wow. I logged back on to wow, ran around dalaran once thinking of what to do, and realized it is all boring and can be done by a bot, and i'm starting to think any game that can done by a bot means i'm doing something that isn't difficult.

  • BarCrowBarCrow Member UncommonPosts: 2,195

I went through gingerproxy...download ok..when it verified email and went back to TCOS sight it re-directs to regional distributor acclaim...which just has me pending indefinitely...tried a few times..but I think they have caught on..I have even seen posts where those who intially bypassed IP issues and set up billing have had their billing options cancelled and can no longer play.
