You know, I was sitting here thinking of MMORPG's in general and how they are always making strides to the MoB AI's to make interaction more and more intriguing.. then I was thinking...

Has any MMORPG's made it so you can have like hirelings?  I don't mean like pets, I mean NPC's which are races/classes that the Players themselves are and can group with players?  Like if you're in a group with all fighter types you can go to the local tavern and maybe seek out a cleric to hire into your party, which is just an NPC but will perform standard cleric functions on their own such as maybe healing or crowd control.

I don't think it would be too difficult for base type classes to be coded to have an AI that could work.

Has something like this ever been done before?

Guild Wars has this, but that is all that I know of.

But that's an ORPG, not an MMORPG... ::::28::

    diablo 2 comes to mind

I think they will never do this cuz it will hurt group play, they say all the time that this is a group oriented game and being able to hire a cleric instead of finding a real person to fill the role will really hurt the group dynamic.

although wouldnt it be cool to summon a pet that heals you? wow that would be cool, maybe something a paladin could cast.

Yea, i Immediately thoguth of diablo 2 also. i think thats the MAIN ORPG that has that system.

Mystics gain the ability at high lvls to summon a spirit that heals you and your allies, it doesn't fight, just flys around and heals, and a paladin gets to summon a squire.  Some little poser that follows you around and fights alot. image

yep only one that i can think of is guild wars, you can get henchmen to group with you, if your missing a certain class from your group or if you want to fight alone you can group them and do the missions.

personally i think that hireling NPCs is fine for a game like diablo 2 but when it comes to EQ or other mmorpgs I think its just kind of dumb... i have always hated the idea of playing with bots it seems far too boring.

Ahh I knew it was only a matter of time before a ORPG had this concept...

Ultima Online had it. I usually used the hirelings for training purposes.
